Patrick was born to John Louis Walsh and Ann E. (Knepper) Walsh on March 18, 1939, on the family farm in Fillmore, Iowa. He attended schools in Dubuque and graduated from Loras Academy class of 1957. In 1960 he began working at John Deere Tractor Works and retired after being a proud employee for 34 years. During his time at John Deere, Patrick was a dedicated member of the UAW Local 94.
Patrick met the love of his life, Carol during high school and they were married on October 8, 1960, at St. Joseph’s the Worker Church Dubuque, IA. In 1967, they moved to the family farm in Fillmore, to begin his lifelong passion of farming, which led to the farm being recognized as a Century Farm. Patrick and Carol built a beautiful life together and raised their four children. Patrick’s greatest joy was his family. He embraced fatherhood wholeheartedly, sharing his love, wisdom, and guidance with his children.
In addition to his family, Patrick was deeply involved in his community. He volunteered as a Little League Coach for the Fillmore team was a Knights of Columbus Council 930 member, and served on the Board of the Sacred Heart Church at Fillmore. Patrick was a man of faith, integrity, and generosity, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
After retiring, Patrick enjoyed many hobbies, including riding RAGBRAI, fishing, golfing with the Red Shirts, playing euchre with friends, and wintering in Arizona. He loved traveling with Carol and his family and had many great adventures together. In the past year, his greatest joy has been his great-grandson Gabriel McFall, who brought a new light to his life.
Patrick is survived by his four children: Susan of Iowa City, Steve of Waukee, Janet of Chicago, Illinois, and James of Boston, Massachusetts; two grandchildren: Jonathon (Suzanne Pichoff) McFall of Des Moines and Marcus McFall (Michael McDonough, partner) of Seattle, Washington; and one great-grandchild Gabriel Eric McFall.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Carol, father-in-law Louis F. Welter and mother-in-law Stella R. (Nachtman) Welter; daughter-in-law Renee Upah-Walsh; sisters Genevieve (Walsh) Nemmers, Ruth (Walsh) Trausch, and Jean (Walsh) Bartels; his brothers-in-law Thomas J. Trausch and Dale J. Bartels; his nephews Mark Bartels, Nicholas Bartels; his nieces Marie Bartels, Mary Ann Nemmers.
In remembering Patrick, his family passes on the lessons he taught, not only just through his words, but by his actions: to be kind, to be generous, and to always be there for one another.
Patrick’s family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the compassionate caregivers who supported him during his final months, especially the staff at Grand Living Bridgewater, for their friendship and support following Carol’s passing.
