Peter T. Sweeney, 78, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at home surrounded by his family.

According to his wishes, a private family service will be held. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Peter was born on March 8, 1947, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Thomas Vincent and Marguerite Mary (McDermott) Sweeney. He graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School in 1965. Alongside his parents, Peter worked for the family business: Sweeney Hardware. After the store’s closing, he worked at A.Y. McDonald Supply for 25 years until his retirement on August 31, 2010. Peter loved spending time outdoors, whether working in the yard, relaxing on the river, or taking the occasional trip to the “Dogs” or the “Boat.” He was a jack of all trades, and while not a master of any one thing, he had a knack for finding solutions to most problems.

Peter is survived by his sons, Neal (Tara) Sweeney and Nick (special friend Tamara Hanson) Sweeney, and their mother Anne Sweeney, all of Dubuque; two grandchildren, Brittany (Hayden) Hunt and Cody Sweeney; great grandson on the way, Landyn; three sisters, Diane (Tom) Thill of Dubuque, Sara (Ed) Ullrich of Coralville, Iowa, and Jane (Rodney) Mannino of Fulshear, Texas;  nieces and nephew; and his significant other Maryann Beecher of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
