Reynold was born November 26, 1939, in Sherrill, IA, the son of Otto and Loretta (Wilwert) Schmerbach. On August 28, 1965, he married Lou Ann E. Beckett in Garnavillo, IA. She preceded him in death on May 19, 2025.
He was a lifelong dairy and crop farmer on the family farm. He served in the United States Navy from 1960 until 1962 where he was stationed on the USS San Marcos.
Reynold was a true outdoorsman. When he wasn’t working on the farm, you could find him fishing for crappies, ice fishing in the winter, or out in the woods hunting deer or turkey. On one memorable occasion, he even took three turkeys with a single shot. Reynold also enjoyed some Black Velvet or homemade wine and was known for his quick wit and memorable one-liners. Above all, he found his greatest happiness in spending time with his friends, family, and the “Four” bars in Buenie.
Survivors include his four children, Nick Schmerbach of North Buena Vista, IA, Pamela (Alan) Breitbach of North Buena Vista, IA, Brett Schmerbach of Delhi, IA, and Becky Topping and Marty Topping of Dubuque, IA; 11 grandchildren, Nicole (Colton) Connelly, Mitchell Breitbach, Victoria (Kyle Cleary) Breitbach, Isabel Breitbach, Dillan (Brylyn Clute) Schmerbach, Abby (Hunter Lazar) Schmerbach, Katie Schmerbach, and Otto, Eva, Haddie, and Milo Topping; two great-grandchildren, Boston Schmerbach and Elle Connelly; three siblings, Myrene Heiderscheit of Peosta, IA, Maury (Elaine) Schmerbach of Dubuque, and Richard (Donna) Schmerbach of Klamath Falls, OR; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert (Dolly) Schmerbach and Marvin Schmerbach; two sisters, Betty (Jack) McPoland and Shirley (Tony) Meyer; and brother-in-law, Edward Heiderscheit.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
