Upon marrying, Bear and Shelley moved to Lost Nation where he worked as a farmhand with Swenson’s Hilltop Hampshire Farms, and then with Allen Richman. Lastly, he drove a semi-truck until his back couldn’t handle it anymore and he retired due to disability.
Bear was a member of the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lost Nation. In early years he was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Spragueville, and for a short time he attended First Baptist Church in Maquoketa.
Bear liked farming and raising hogs and had a milk cow named “Bossy”. He was an expert carpenter, and enjoyed woodworking, crafting tables and furniture, making wood characters, and cutting out all the wood projects for a paint class that his wife Shelley had taught in Lost Nation.
