Robert M. Smith
Robert Martin Smith, 73, of Blue Grass, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 21, 2025. In accordance with his wishes, no formal services will be held.
Robert was born in Chicago on December 20, 1951, Robert was the son of Robert and Vivian (Kennedy) Smith. He served as a Marine and was a proud Vietnam veteran. Following his military service, he worked as a foreman for the Burlington Northern Railroad for over 31 years, retiring in 2007.
Robert had a deep love for life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle, playing cards—especially Euchre and cribbage—watching classic Westerns and war films, and caring for his yard. Above all, he cherished spending time with his grandchildren, who brought him endless joy.
He had a generous heart and a gift for giving. Alongside his wife, Cheryl, he volunteered regularly at the Blue Grass Community Center, supporting local events and initiatives.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl; his children: Robert Smith of Dubuque, Kari (Ivan) Divino of Charleston, SC, and Jeremy (Karen) Smith of Dubuque; his stepson, Nick (Courtney) Dohse of Maquoketa; and his grandchildren: Jacob, Mira, Colton, Rowan, Aria, Landon, and Saylah. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Everly, Maeve, Emma, Malacai, and Mina.
He is also survived by his siblings: Penny (Dave) Schmerbach of Dubuque and Shannon (Dave) Felderman of Delhi, IA; his stepsisters: Joyce Budde of East Dubuque, and Judy (George) Swan of Dubuque and half sister Pat Houston of Largo FL; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his son Billy, and his stepbrothers-in-law, Doug Houston and Keith Budde.
Robert will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, his dedication to family, and his unwavering strength. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and community spirit.
