Rose A. Hammel

Rose Ann Hammel, 84, of Dubuque, died Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Rose will be at 10:00 am on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Father Raymond Burkle as the Celebrant. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Rose was born May 3, 1941, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Herbert and Ernestine (Haberkorn) Klein. On October 6, 1962, she married Floyd Hammel at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on July 15, 2019.

She graduated from Holy Ghost in Dubuque, and earned her nursing degree from the Mercy School of Nursing.

Rose was a nurse at Finley Hospital for 20 years. Along with her career in nursing, she also ran the family farm alongside Floyd. Rose was a faithful member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. She was an avid euchre player and enjoyed going fishing. Above all, she was happiest when she was spending time with her family.

Survivors include five children, Julie Milligan of Sherrill, John (Patty) Hammel of New Hampton, IA, Jane Hammel of Dubuque, James “Jim” (Laura) Hammel of Sherrill, and Jeff Hammel of Sherrill; nine grandchildren, Travis, Lacey (LaNell), Michael (Tomas), Zach (Samantha), Emily (Colton), Nick (Ashley), Luke (Jessi), Mitchel (Tierney), and Sydney; 10 great-grandchildren, Tayden, Lilliana, Tyler, LaRyiah, Gracie, Eadie, Natalie, Ila, Olivia, Nathan, and two more on the way; and one sister-in-law, Darlene Klein.

Besides her parents and husband, Rose was preceded in death by one grandson, Danny, one sister, Delphine (Dick) Dolter, four brothers, Don (Anne), George, Norb (Pat), and her twin, Richard Klein, and  brother-in-law, Merle (Jean) Hammel.

Rose’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at MercyOne and Dr. Ries, her sister-in-law, Darlene, her niece, Gail Klein, and family friend, Kathy Klein for all of their care and support.

A memorial has been established.
