Sr. Anthony Wagner

Sister Anthony (Virginia) Wagner, OSF, 84, of Dubuque, died on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at the Clare House in Dubuque.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Clare House Chapel, Mount St. Francis Center at 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2025, followed by burial at the Sisters of St. Francis natural burial site. Guests unable to attend may participate via livestream at: www.youtube.com/dubuquefranciscans

Sister Anthony was born on August 24, 1941 in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Frank and Lorraine (Thomas) Wagner.

Sister Anthony entered the Sisters of St. Francis September 3, 1958 and made final profession of vows August 12, 1966. Sister studied at Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, IA.  She ministered in Iowa at Webster City, St. Mary’s, Waterloo, and in Dubuque at Holy Family Hall, St. Francis Home, Immaculate Conception Convent, and Alverno Apartments. She was also missioned in Houston, Texas and in Illinois at Niles, Chicago, and Lockport.

Sister is survived by her sisters, Sr. Mary Ann Wagner, OSF and Patricia Billings; brothers, David (Judy) Wagner and Denis (Kathy) Wagner; brother-in-law, Wilbur Kass; nieces, nephews, and her Franciscan sisters.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Rita (Harry) Bemis, Jeanann (Clem) Mullen, Marilyn Kass, and Jean Wagner who died in infancy; brother, Richard Wagner; sister-in-law, Katy Wagner; and brother-in-law Roy Billings.

The Sisters of St. Francis express their thanks to Hospice of Dubuque and the MSFC staff for their care and concern.
