Sr. Carl Loras Pilmaier, BVM
Sister Carl Loras Pilmaier, BVM, 97, of Mount Carmel Bluffs, 1160 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024.
Visitation will be from 9-9:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, in the Mary Frances Clarke Chapel at Mount Carmel Bluffs. Sharing of Memories will be at 9:30 a.m., followed immediately by the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial is in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Sister Carl Loras was an elementary teacher at St. Jude in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In addition, she taught in elementary schools in Davenport, Iowa; Chicago; Wilmington, Ill.; Memphis, Tenn.; Seattle and Milwaukee, where she also served as principal. She ministered as principal in Lincoln, McCook, Plattsmouth and Fairbury, Nebr.; school librarian in Urbandale, Iowa; and resident advocate at a retirement center in Johnston, Iowa.
She was born on June 20, 1927, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Carl and Laura (Schmitt) Pilmaier. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1946, from St. Augustin, Des Moines, Iowa. She professed first vows on Sept 8, 1946, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1954.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Carl, John (Patricia) and Tom (Mary) Pilmaier; and sisters Mary Anne (Robert) Roby and Therese (Arnold “Arnie”) Janicek. She is survived by nieces, including Sister Linda Roby, BVM, Dubuque, Iowa; nephews; and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 78 years.
