Steven M. Rohner, age 59, of California, formerly of Dubuque, was called home suddenly on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital, Santa Clara, California. To honor Steve’s life, funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Deacon Jim Luksetich officiating, followed by full military honors being accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. To celebrate Steve’s life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Steve was born on June 11, 1958, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Matt and Mary Eileen (Conlon) Rohner.
Steve spent the majority of his earthly journey right here in Dubuque and was always proud to have been surrounded by family and friends on a daily basis, but to also have been in the 1976 graduating class of Hempstead High School. Steve would eventually go on to honorably serve his country, for 4 years, with the U.S. Marine Corps where he put his natural abilities to use even further while making many new lifelong friends along the way. Steve spent many years in the construction trades, but the primary days of his working career were invested within the many years he spent operating heavy equipment with the Iowa DOT. After moving to California though, Steve decided to devote the last 8 years of his earning potential with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in San Francisco. In his free time, Steve enjoyed staying fit and continually faced the battle of aging head on by incorporating a little weight lifting into his day, hitting the trail for either a nice jog or a relaxing bike ride, or even jumping into the refreshing pool to get a few laps in if time permitted. But, what Steven really enjoyed, if truth be told, was any opportunity to jump on his Harley Davidson FatBoy and simply hit the open road. The freedom of two wheels beneath him, and the open air surrounding him at the end of the day, are where Steve truly found peace and serenity. Steve was also a very kind and generous man throughout his entire life and his most recent trip to Puerto Rico to help the rebuilding process is clearly evidence of a humble and caring man whose heart was always in the right place when it came to his fellow man. Steve’s great sense of humor, his loving personality and his positive influence on the world around him will be missed by all who knew and loved him. We were absolutely not prepared to have to say “farewell for now” to Steve, but we trust that his soul rests safely in the arms of his Gracious Lord and Savior now, that he is beginning to play cards with his new inner group, and that thankfully we will all get to hear his hearty laugh once again when we also join him to begin our eternal walk with Jesus. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 sisters, Suzie Rohner and Debbie Rohner.
