Thomas A. Flanagan, 57, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly, in his home on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Thomas was born on April 23, 1969, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of George W. and Mary Lou (Cornwell) Flanagan. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School class of 1988. On April 20, 2016, he was united in marriage to Stacy Jones in Dubuque. Tom worked at A-1 Crane Rental & Machinery, previously Walser Crane Service. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 234.
Tom was a loving father to both of his sons and his stepdaughters, and a playful, fun papa to all of his grandchildren. He was a tremendous role model to his sons and someone his family could always count on. Tom believed in giving tough love when it was needed, but everything he did came from a place of love and care for the people around him. He was truly a remarkable man who accomplished so much in his life, even though it was cut far too short.
He was also an incredible husband to his wife, Stacy. Together they spent countless hours working on their home, trying new things, and building a life they loved. They were truly made for each other. For many years, Tom was a man of few words, but after meeting Stacy, he opened up and became known for his humor, generosity, and personality. He could make anyone laugh and would give the shirt off his back without ever expecting anything in return.
Tom enjoyed fast cars, loud motorcycles, cold beers, and spending time with his little brother, Bob, at the dragstrip. He also loved going to garage sales to search for treasures that someone might need someday. Above all, Tom loved his family deeply. He was an amazing papa to his grandchildren, and he will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
Tom is survived by his wife, Stacy; sons, Cory (Carissa Bishop) Flanagan and Matthew (Megan Hackman) Flanagan; stepdaughter Olivia (Kevin) Scheffert; 12 grandchildren, Braylee, Eli, Kale, Kora, Rayne, Zoey, Ellie, Tripp, Charlie, Murdoc, Mylo, and Lorelei; mother, Mary Lou Flanagan; brothers, Bob (Tina) Flanagan, Mike (Peggy) Flanagan, and George (Lisa) Flanagan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, George; paternal grandparents, George and Enid Flangan; maternal grandparents, Alfred “Red” and Betty Cornwell; stepdaughter Brittany Gaylord; parents-in-law, James and Shirley Jones; and brother-in-law, Daniel Jones.
The family would like to thank the Dubuque Police Department, Dubuque Fire and Paramedics.
