Virigil G. Roling

Virgil G. Roling, 58, of Andrew, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Virgil Gerard Roling was born on February 22, 1968, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Delbert and Priscilla (Banowetz) Roling. He grew up with strong family values and a steady work ethic that would guide him throughout his life. He was a 1987 graduate of Delwood High School, and he carried the lessons of his upbringing into every role he held, whether at work, at church, or at home with the people he loved most.

In 2004, Virgil met Michelle Otting Kelly, and their lives were joined in a loving partnership that brought him great joy. They were married on October 31, 2020, at Saint Lawrence Catholic Church in Otter Creek, Iowa. Virgil cherished his family deeply and was happiest when surrounded by those he loved. He took great pride in being a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle, and he treasured the many memories they created together.

Virgil spent his working life serving others and taking pride in a job well done. He first worked as a farmhand and later for International Paper. From 2000 to 2004, he was a school bus driver for the Andrew Community School District while also working for the City of Andrew in the Maintenance Department. From 2004 to 2008, he worked for the City of Maquoketa Parks Department. In 2008, he began what he considered his dream job with the Clinton County Secondary Roads Department, where he served faithfully as a Motor Grade Operator until 2026. He was known for his dedication, reliability, and the quiet pride he took in helping maintain the roads and communities around him.

Virgil was a faithful Catholic and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. His faith was an important part of his life and provided him with strength and comfort. He loved his dogs and had a lifelong love of music, vinyl records, and playing his guitar. He also enjoyed gardening, planting trees and flowers, cooking, baking, canning, driving his tractors, working as a road grader, driving his skid loader, and serving as the family video historian. Above all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and was happiest when he was loving on them.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Michelle Roling of Andrew, Iowa; his children, Tim (Erin) Kelly of Andrew, Iowa, Michaela (Nathan) Cole of Iowa City, Iowa, and Logan Kelly of Maquoketa, Iowa; two grandchildren, Sam Kelly and Robert Cole; his parents, Delbert and Priscilla Roling of Lost Nation, Iowa; his siblings, John (Dana) Roling of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Ann (Tony Mazzola) Roling of Hubert, North Carolina; and his nieces and nephews, Dylan, Austin, Justin (Alyssa Davis), and Olivia Roling, and Tyler and Karsyn Roling.  He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Marie Roling; his maternal grandparents, Walter and Rita Banowetz; and his brother, Steven Roling.
