Mark A. Mensen
Mark A. Mensen, 66, of Earlville, Iowa passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville. Visitation will continue at Kramer Funeral Home from 9 – 10 a.m. prior to funeral mass.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earlville, Iowa, with burial at a later date at the church cemetery. Rev. Philip Agyei will officiate.
Mark was born on August 6, 1957 in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Arnold and Charlotte (Funke) Mensen. He married Cindy Sellner on August 20, 1977 in Earlville, Iowa.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was quick-witted and enjoyed a good laugh. He greatly enjoyed ice fishing, time at the shop with friends, driving his golf cart around town, and attending the grandchildren’s activities. He worked at Bard Concrete for many years. In his spare time, he loved woodworking. Mark was proud of Earlville, serving on the Earlville Fire Department, assisting with Boy Scouts and the Earlville Little League.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Cindy; children: Andy Mensen of Delhi, Jamie (Mindy) Mensen of Delhi, Lindsay (Zach) Bindert of Elkader; grandchildren: Owen, Ella, Eva, Izzy, Bradley, Benjamin, Caroline; siblings: Bob (Georgina) Mensen of New Vienna, Rose (Jerry) Moorman of Manchester, David (Karen) Mensen of Delhi, Brenda (Phil) Luensmann of Salida, CO; mother-in-law, Donna Sellner of Manchester; in-laws: Debi (Ron) Mensen of Earlville, Vicki Meyer of Dyersville, Gary (Karelene) Sellner, Larry (LouAnn) Sellner, both of Earlville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Irvin Sellner; in-laws: James Philipp, Terry Meyer; and a niece, Annette Mensen.

Stan C. Hoefer
Stan C. Hoefer, 72, of Epworth, Iowa passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at MercyOne in Dubuque, Iowa.
Visitation for Stan will be held from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, Iowa, where a prayer service will be held at 11:30 a.m. and the Epworth Fire Department will meet in a body at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held after 9:00 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial for Stan will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Epworth, Iowa with Rev. Michael Schueller presiding. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Epworth, Iowa with the Striking of the four fives afforded by the Epworth Fire Department.
Stan was born February 27, 1952, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Charles and Clarice “Lavon” (Smith) Hoefer. He was a graduate of Western Dubuque High School in Epworth, Iowa. On May 21, 1977, he was united in marriage to Nancy Maiers at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross, Iowa. Stan worked for H&W Trucking for 31 years Aug. 1971- Feb. 2002. He also worked as a Bus Driver of Western Dubuque School District for 20 years. Stan also served on the Epworth Fire Department for 25 years, 1975-2001 where he was one of the first members to attend the first Paramedic Class 1988-1989, Fire fighter of the year in 1987, served as past president 1991 and 1992, and retired as Captain.
Stan was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who truly enjoyed his time with his family. He loved attending the grandkids sporting events which he typically came early enough to get the closest parking spot and his favorite spot to sit. Stan also coached Epworth town Baseball. He also enjoyed his Golf cart rides around town and Thursday night cards. Stan was an avid Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Western Dubuque Bobcat fan.
He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Parish in Epworth.
Those left to cherish Stanley’s memory are his wife, Nancy Hoefer of Epworth; three children, Tony Hoefer of Epworth, Andy (Crystal) Hoefer of Peosta, and Kristy (Brent) Goldsmith of Dyersville; six grandchildren, Hannah, Lacey, and Bo Hoefer, Neena, Blake, and Nolan Goldsmith; four siblings, Steve “Buck” Hoefer of Epworth, Vickie (Gene) Nauman of Lake in the Hills, IL, Cindy (Joe) Leibold of Farley, Dennis “D.J.” (Barb) Hoefer of Clinton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ted (Barb) Maiers, Brian (Ann) Maiers both of Holy Cross, Terry (Rae Ann) Maiers of Dubuque, Jeanne (Ray) Corry of North Liberty, and Kathy (Bill) Wasilenko of Chesapeake, VA.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and father and mother-in-law, Emmett and Mabel (Klein) Maiers.
The family would like to give a special thank you to ICU staff at MercyOne especially Dr. Simsir and Nurse Abbie for the wonderful care they gave to Stan.

Theodore M. DeBoor
Theodore Martin DeBoor, 88, of Galena, IL, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and daughter on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Midwest Senior Community, Galena.
A private family service will be held at a later date. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, is assisting the family.
He was born August 15, 1935, in Indianapolis, IN, the son of Martin and Francis (Scott) DeBoor.
Ted was united in marriage to his wife of sixty-two years, Roberta Christine Ness, on August 21, 1962.
Theodore was known as “Ted,” his beloved stepson Ronnie affectionally called him “Teddy.” He was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend and always had a jolly smile to share. His youngest grandchildren, Ashlyn-Renee and Cailyn knew him as their Paw Paw. He relocated with his family to Downy, CA, when he was 18. He began his career alongside his father in the metal pattern shop industry before moving on to the purchasing department for NASA. He loved woodworking and enjoyed being handy around the house, which led him to start his own handyman business. He was a bit of an entrepreneur adventuring into the start-up of various companies, from doll and children’s furniture and antique stores to a Sash and Door Company in Downy, CA. He also had a passion for building and spent many years owning a construction and contracting business. One of his dreams came true when he designed and built his mountain home in Truckee, CA. Eventually, Ted and his wife Roberta relocated to The Galena Territory, where he worked and enjoyed playing golf, especially when his daughter Renee would be on the course with him. He eventually retired and settled in Galena, where they have lived for over 20 years.
Ted had a special place in his heart for the Chicago Cubs baseball team, always believing in the possibilities with each new season. Other interests he enjoyed were playing golf and antiquing. His most stressful adventure was teaching his daughter Renee how to drive. However, his most beloved treasure, and what he wanted to do the most, was spend time with his wife, Roberta. They had a special love like no other. Ted, Teddy, Dad, and Paw Paw was deeply loved and will be missed beyond words.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta Christine DeBoor, two daughters, Renee Cherie (Darren) DeBoor Houghton of Waxhaw, NC and Karen Sue (Carl) Gernert of Prineville, OR, a step-son, Rick Hunter, six grandchildren, Ashlyn-Renee Houghton, Cailyn Houghton, Chris Gernert, Katie Gernert, Kasey Gernert and Patrica Ann Hunter, a brother, Ron DeBoor, a sister, Rosemary Hibbard, and brother-in-law, Clyde Ness and his many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Martin DeBoor, and Ron Hunter, two brothers, James and Edward DeBoor, and a sister, Patricia De Boor.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to MercyOne Hospital, Dubuque, Midwest Medical Center Skilled Nursing Unit, Dr. Gregory Vandigo, Midwest Senior Community and Hospice of Dubuque who provided amazing care and comfort to our beloved Ted and father.

Carol Rusch
Carol Rusch, 81, of Dubuque, passed away March 13, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00p.m., Friday, March 15, 2024 at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, Dubuque, and from 9:30-10:15a.m., Saturday, March 16, 2024 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2025 Jackson Street, Dubuque. Funeral services will immediately follow at 10:30a.m., at the church. Entombment will be in Linwood Cemetery.
Carol was born on December 27, 1942 to Clifford and LaVonne (Dosser) Christopherson in Caledonia, MN.
Carol was baptized on January 17, 1943. She was confirmed on April 14, 1957.
Carol attended Audubon Elementary School, Jefferson Middle School, and Dubuque Senior High School.
She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Daniel Rusch, on May 12, 1962 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
Carol was an active cub scout den mother, and girl scout leader for several years.
She was a wonderful mother who raised a beautiful family. She cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In her free time, she enjoyed gardening. She was also an excellent cook.
Carol was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Aid Association for Lutherans.
Carol is survived by her loving husband Daniel; children, Jeff (Michelle) Rusch of Dubuque, Brian (Christine) Rusch of Kansas City, Mike (Dawn) Rusch of Dubuque, and Sue (Andrew) Bellaver of Indianapolis; 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Connie (Bill) Wilson of Alexander, Virginia; and in-laws, Jim (Vi) Rusch of Dubuque, Jeanne (Dale) Heeren of Monticello, and Jan (Greg) Carter of Fort Worth, Texas. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and mother and father in-law.
Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Dubuque to be put towards the organ fund.

James W. Powers
James “Jimbo” W. Powers, 75, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Saturday March 9th, 2024, at MercyOne Dubuque.
A visitation will be held Monday April 1, 2024, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. The Funeral Service will be held at 4:30 p.m. with Deacon Mike Timmerman officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard.
Jim was born July 22, 1948, in Dubuque to William and Helen (Laughlin) Powers. He graduated from Wahlert High School in 1966. He served in the US Army from 1967-1969 and was stationed in Japan. Jim married Patty Humke on October 25, 2003. He was a proud father, grandfather and loving husband.
Jim loved life! He was a consummate cook and the ultimate host entertaining with his quick wit and one-liners. He took great pride in his yard, enjoyed Days of Our Lives and the challenge of the daily Sudoku. Jim was an avid sports fan, especially Da Bears and Hawkeyes, but his true passion was playing golf.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Patty; son, Tracy (Bobbie Jost) Powers; grandchildren, Emma, Will, and Brady Powers all of Dubuque; siblings, Kate (Dennis “Oscar”) Meyer, Dennis “Whitey” (Martha) Powers, and Kevin Powers of Chicago; siblings-in-law, Karla Powers, Bob (Donna) Humke, Dennis Humke, Brenda (Gary) Esser of Sarasota FL, and Renee (Gary) Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Robert and Avril Humke; brothers, Mike and Tom Powers; siblings-in-law, Mary Powers, Jim Humke, Charmaine Zantow, and Deb Appel.

Donald C. Welsh
Donald C. Welsh, 90, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away peacefully on March 12, 2024, at home.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be held at 12:45 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 2024, at St. Joseph Key West Church with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating. Entombment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery with Military honors by the Iowa Army National Guard and Ceremony of the Four Fives by the Key West Fire Department.
Donnie was born September 15, 1933, at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, son of Clemens O. Welsh and Regina Mary (Shannon) Welsh.
Donnie graduated Loras Academy in 1951, began his work career before being drafted into the Army, and serving in the Army in Gonsenheim, Germany from 1954 – 1956.
Donnie married Margery Ann Coakley on June 22, 1957, at St. Patrick’s Church in Garryowen.
It seemed Donnie worked with his dad at Oakland Farms Dairy from the day he could walk, and he would work at the dairy until it closed in 1972. After the closing of the dairy, Donnie began a new business, a Ziebart Franchise which he operated in Key West for the next 11 years. His next position would last until he retired, Donnie went to work in the Maintenance department at Finley Hospital. Donnie enjoyed his time at Finley, especially all the great people he would meet and develop lasting friendships with.
Donnie served as a lay director at Mount Olivet Cemetery, he was a member of the Key West Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served as a parish representative for the St Vincent DePaul society.
The most important things to Donnie over his life were his faith, his family, and his friends. He loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren, attending games and events. Donnie’s calendar revolved around attending any, and all, children’s/grandchildren’s events he could, whether it be baseball, basketball, football, track, golf, choir, or theater.
Donnie especially loved baseball, from his time on the Prairie League field, to Little League games, and on to High School games. Whether it was playing or watching, he just loved baseball! The Cardinals have been his team for evermore, in recent years he would listen to any games he could find on the radio or tv. He also loved to golf over the years, with friends and with his family. Beyond family, Donnie and Margie had a great circle of lifelong friends with whom they created wonderful lasting memories. The one thing everyone remembers when they think about Donnie is his beautiful dancing. He and Margie had so much fun dancing over the years any chance they had.
Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Margery. His 5 Children who will miss him dearly, Kris (Glen Haxmeier) Osweiler of Peosta; Roger (Paula) Welsh of Key West; Ann (Don Bates) Welsh, Kansas City; Michele (Jasen) Osterberger, Marion; Michael (Laure) Welsh, Argeles Sur Mer, France. 12 beloved Grandchildren, Eric (Abby Rettenberger) Osweiler, Matt (Chenoa) Osweiler, Desirae (Adam) Gillies, Lindsey (Chris) Grue, Cole Welsh, Andrea Bates, Lucas, Brady, Samuel, and Jack Osterberger, and Rose and Céline Welsh. 10 wonderful Great Grandchildren, Brayden, Grayson, Briella, and Estella Gillies, Charlotte, Hayes, and Josette Grue, Gavyn and Griffin Boen, and Claire Osweiler. Sisters, Mary Jane (Frank) Martin, Carolyn (Carl) Moyer; Brother-in-law Loras Coakley; Sister-in- law Mary Jane Coakley; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Jean Welsh, sister and brother-in-law, Geri and Paul Ryan, father and mother-in-law Dan and Helen Coakley, brothers-in-law David Coakley and Roger Coakley, son-in-law James Osweiler, niece Cindy (Martin) Scherrman, and great-nephew Isaac Weires.
Donnie’s family would like to thank his VA nurse, Melissa Klinkkammer, for her compassion, care and support. And Diane Stecklein and her staff at No Place Like Home, for her team’s support for Donnie over the last several months. Donnie enjoyed all the visits from family and friends, even to a man of few words, these visits meant a lot. For the many people who joined in on his 90th Birthday audio greetings, he loved listening to the stories and well wishes, thank you!
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Donnie’s honor to the building fund at St. Joseph’s Church Key West, or to support relighting of the Centennial Cross.
Vicki M. Maiers
Vicki M. Maiers, 74 of Dyersville, Iowa passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at MercyOne in Dubuque.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville. Visitation will continue at the Funeral Home from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday prior to funeral mass.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica with a private burial at a later date.
Vicki was born on January 3, 1950, in Appleton, WI, the daughter of Donald and Josephine “Friday” Courchane. She married Marv Maiers on February 13, 1971 at Basilica of St. Francis in Dyersville.
She grew up in Dyersville, and graduated from Beckman high school in 1968. She worked on the family farm for many years. She served as manager at Raycom credit union where her attention to detail was crucial. She enjoyed working with her colleagues at Raycom. When Raycom merged with DuTrac Credit Union, she served as a manager at DuTrac Credit union until her retirement.
Not one to sit still, unless it was on the front porch with the love of her life, Vicki took a position with Travel Dubuque after her retirement. This allowed her to spread her love of the area and her kindness to many people across eastern Iowa. She was particularly well suited for the work because it allowed her to exercise her talent for turning strangers into friends.
Vicki volunteered at Oak Crest Manor in Dyersville. It was her way of giving back to the people and place that cared for her mother. Vicki held dear the time she spent at Oak Crest and often remarked that her time spent with Oak Crest Manor residents soothed her heart and brough her so much joy.
Vicki’s grandchildren and great grandchildren were always in her heart and never far from her mind. She was overjoyed when she became a great grandmother and she cherished the time she was able to spend with them.
Vicki loved all animals. She owned many dogs and ran her own dog boarding kennel for over a decade. She spent many hours bird watching and enjoyed tracking any new species sightings. Vicki loved to read and was an enthusiastic member of the Monday Book Club at the James Kennedy public library. Vicki also enjoyed attending events at the Field of Dreams site. She often sat with the extended Ghost Player family up by the trees.
Survivors include her husband, Marv; children: Kristine (Tim) Petsche of Vindland Center, Wisconsin; Grandchildren: Hannah (Michael) Wisniewski of Brussles, WI, Mollie Petsche of Appleton, Josh Petsche of Vinland Center, Wisconsin; Great-grandchildren Athena and Rowan; siblings: Virginia Arps (John) Lopiccolo of Columbia, SC, Gregory (Ann) Courchane of Palm Harbor, FL; Nieces: Ann Marie Offermann (Boyd Brown) of Apple Valley, MN, Mary Kay Offermann of Eagan, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Josephine “Friday” Courchane, parents-in-law, Elmer and Mary Jane Maiers and a sister-in-law, Hazel Offermann.

Terrence J. McGovern
Terrence J. “Terry” McGovern, 74, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on March 12th, 2024, at UnityPoint Health, Finley Hospital.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15th, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A private burial will be at St. John The Baptist Cemetery in Centralia at a later date.
Terry was born on March 18, 1949, in Peosta, Iowa the son of Clem and Gertrude (Schmitt) McGovern. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Tigges on April 19, 1969. He worked at William C. Brown Publishing and McGraw Hill.
Terry was an avid handyman and craftsman; and he enjoyed anything to do with cars.
He is survived by his wife Betty; sons Craig and Shane (Molly); grandchildren Brooklyn, Evelyn, Kallen, Arlo, Louie and Hayden. Brothers Don (Julie) McGovern and Ron (Janet) Rolwes; his sister Marlene Golinvaux along with many nieces and nephews.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents; his son Todd McGovern, brothers-in-law Mike Tigges, and Steve Golinvaux and a great nephew Cade McGovern.
In lieu of flowers a Terry McGovern memorial fund will be established.
David R. Lampe
David R. Lampe, 74, of Asbury, died of natural causes on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at Luther Manor Grand Meadows with loving family by his side.
Rite of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 15, in the Chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1111 Davis St., Dubuque. Deacon Bill Hicks will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory.
David was born on April 9, 1949, in Dubuque, Iowa. A 1967 graduate of Wahlert High School, he earned his B.A. degree, summa cum laude, in English from Loras College in 1971. He subsequently received both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
His career with the federal government spanned some 31 years, and included positions as writer and editor with several Defense Department units, among which were the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower, Reserve Affairs, and Logistics and the Defense Intelligence Agency. In 2008, he retired from the National Transportation Safety Board as chief of the Report Development Division, Office of Highway Safety.
David is survived by two brothers, James (Valparaiso, IN), and Robert (Ankeny, IA). He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Dorothy (Heinricy) Lampe, and two brothers, Martin and John Lampe.

Evelyn H. Vondran
Evelyn H. Vondran, 100, of Dubuque, IA, formerly Galena, IL, passed away Monday, March 11, 2024, At Stonehill Health Center.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, March 18, 2024, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where friends may call after 9:30 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Galena.
She was born October 8, 1923, in Kieler, WI, the daughter of Aloysius and Catherine (Dietzel) Vondran. Evelyn attended schools in Kieler and Dickeyville and eventually graduated from the Immaculate Conception Academy. She attended several colleges and received her master’s and Ph.D. from Purdue University. Over the years, she taught school in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana and served as a principal for a short time.
Evelyn retired from Keystone Area Education Agency. She enjoyed genealogy and went to Germany to study it. Evelyn enjoyed wintering in Arizona, playing cards, and visiting the casino.
She was a member of the sisters of Saint Francis, Dubuque, from 1941 until 1967.
Evelyn is survived by her sister-in-law, Doris Vondran Runde, and her nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her four sisters, Melita Vondran, Angie Mulgrew, Marie Schonhoff, and Anne Hickie; two brothers, Joseph and Jerome Vondran; her brothers-in-law, Joseph Mulgrew, Ted Schonhoff, and Thomas Hickie, and sister-in-law, Margaret Vondran.

Lulubell E. Koch
Lulubell E. Koch passed away surrounded by family at home on March 10, 2024, at the age of 87 in Maquoketa, Iowa. She was born on December 26, 1936, in Grand Mound, Iowa, and was lovingly raised by her parents, August and Alice Mae (Schrader) Kunde, along with her beloved twin sister, Bonnabell.
Lulubell’s early education was at Watson country school at Bear Creek, and she later graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1954. It was after graduation that she moved to town and met her lifelong partner, Merwin Koch. Their love story began in March of 1959, and they were united in marriage on October 18, 1959. Together, they welcomed five wonderful children into their family: Brenda, Jeanette, Denise, Darrell, and Dean.
Throughout her life, Lulubell was the epitome of diligence and versatility. As a dedicated homemaker, she worked side by side with her husband on their farm. Her professional journey included roles as a waitress, cook, and bookkeeper. She also held positions at ADAC Plastics, Pacific Coast Feather in Maquoketa, and Farmland Foods in Dubuque.
Lulubell’s zest for life was evident in her many interests and hobbies. She was a member of the Preston Twirlers and relished square dancing with Merwin. Her love for dancing extended to joyful times with her twin sister, Bonnabell. Lulubell had a green thumb, taking pride in her gardening and canning. Her creative spirit shone through in her sewing, knitting, crocheting, furniture refinishing, and painting. A culinary enthusiast, she enjoyed cooking and experimenting with new recipes. Above all, Lulubell’s greatest joy was the time she spent with her cherished family and doting on her grandchildren.
Lulubell’s legacy of love and laughter is carried on by her devoted husband, Merwin Koch of Maquoketa, IA; her children, Brenda (Gary) Sanger of Maquoketa, IA, Jeanette (Joe) Cavanagh of Delmar, IA, Denise Koch of Cedar Rapids, IA, Darrell (Melissa) Koch of Elwood, IA, and Dean (Amanda) Koch of Baldwin, IA. Her twin sister, Bonnabell Creger of Baldwin, IA, also survives her. She was a proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish her memory, as will numerous nieces and nephews.
Lulubell was preceded in death by her parents and by her 5 brothers and 5 sisters.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, March 16, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, March 15, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Miles, Iowa Cemetery.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Hospice of Jackson County, or First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa.

Judy A. Esser
Judy A. Esser, 83, of Dubuque was welcomed into the arms of the Lord on March 10, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
A private family service is going to be held for Judy. Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. Dubuque is assisting the family.
Judy was born in Dubuque on December 24, 1940, the daughter of Leo and Margaret (Fortman) Sullivan. She married Ed Esser on January 10, 1959, and they recently celebrated 65 years of marriage together.
Judy loved being a wife and mother. She poured her whole heart and soul into every one of her children. She made sure they all knew who Jesus was as she did. She touched many lives in that way and did whatever she could to serve the church community. Judy will be best remembered for her gift of giving and talent for cooking. She always made sure our favorite recipes were prepared for gatherings and no one left without a carefully prepared leftover package. She loved animals and was often accused of over feeding the family dogs. Judy will be remembered by her grandchildren for her famous root beer floats.
She is survived by her husband, Ed; children, Jeff (Jayne) Esser, Greg Esser, Michele (Tim) Leick, Scott Esser, Mick (Paula) Esser and Eric (Kym) Esser; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brothers, Gene Sullivan, Sam (LaVonne) Sullivan; sisters, Ginger Bower and Sandy (Gary) Grover.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather Jim Robbins; brothers, John and Mickey Sullivan; and sisters, Joyce and Suzanne.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the funeral home in care of the Esser family.

Barbara Cook
Barbara Cook, 77, of Dubuque, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2024, at Hawkeye Care Center.
Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd., Dubuque, where there will be a Memorial Service held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Deacon Bill Biver will officiate.
Barbara was born February 2, 1947 in Dubuque, the daughter of Elmer and Hattie (Schmid) Riniker and grew up in Durango.
When her three boys were very young, Barbara ran an in-home daycare while living in Idaho. After returning to Dubuque, Barbara went on to earn her BA in Special Education from the University of Dubuque. She taught special education and worked at ARC. Her clients were very special to her, and she maintained relationships with many of them even after she left the field.
Barbara’s second career was real estate, along with her second husband Ken, she worked in realty in the Dubuque area for over 20 years.
Barbara enjoyed traveling to Arizona in the winter, and was a fantastic hostess. She loved riding her horse, Spirit, and enjoyed taking her grandkids to feed him apples and carrots. Barbara lived to be a grandmother, and was the best grandma possible.
Barbara was an amazing and prolific gardener. No job was too big for her, including hand digging her own pond. Creating beautiful gardens wherever she lived was a passion.
Barbara is survived by her three sons, Parrish (Jennifer) Cluff, of Phoenix, AZ, Jason (Donna) Cluff, of Dubuque, and Brian Cluff, of Dubuque; her step-daughter, Tanya (Marty) Maiers, of Dubuque; her step-son, Tom (Heather) Cook, of Las Vegas, NV; her grandchildren, Lana and Shayna, Jordan and Adam, and Tanner and Tate; two sisters, Donna (Don) Schiers, of Colorado, and Kathy Keil, of Georgia; and her former husband, Ken Cook, of Dubuque.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister in infancy, Judith Ann Riniker; and her brother-in-law, Ken Keil.
Todd Shellhorn
Todd “Roundy” Shellhorn, 52, of Galena, IL, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
A celebration of life will be held at Noon, Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where friends may call after 10:00 AM until the time of service. The burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.
He was born September 12, 1971, in Galena, the son of the late Thomas J. and Lynn M. (Benson) Shellhorn.
Todd graduated from Galena High School, where he played football for all four years. He attended Rock Valley College in 1994. Todd obtained a bachelor’s in respiratory care at Independence University. He was employed at Park Strathmore as a Respiratory Therapist. It was during this time that Todd obtained his CDL as an over-the-road truck driver and changed careers to drive cross country. Todd returned to his career as a Respiratory Therapist at OSF Saint Anthony Hospital, Rockford, IL. Todd advanced his career at OSF Saint Anthony and was the clinical educator, where he taught and influenced the careers and lives of many RRT students.
While the country was battling COVID-19 and its effects in 2020, Todd was featured in a local TV news segment on local healthcare workers who shared their journey of dealing with the frontline battle of COVID-19. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt and, most recently, had taken up the art of fly fishing.
He is survived by his two children, Kelsey and Reid Shellhorn; his mother, Lynn of Galena; three siblings, Scott (Amber) Shellhorn, Heather (Dan) Steines, and Denise (Mark) Cornille; his aunts and uncles; cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas J. Shellhorn, on December 25, 2015, and his grandparents, William “Sonny” and Harriet Shellhorn and David and Beatrice Benson.

Jacob L. Brewster
Jacob Lee Brewster, 52, of Maquoketa, Iowa, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, passed away on March 9, 2024, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on December 27, 1971, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Wilbert Dale and Nancy Jo (Kallenberger) Brewster, Jacob’s life was a testament to his strength, work ethic, and love for his family.
Jacob’s early years were spent in the nurturing environment of Maquoketa schools, where he laid the foundation for a life of dedication and hard work. On June 20, 2009, he united in marriage with Angela Kay Hughes, and together they built a life filled with love and mutual respect in Maquoketa, Iowa.
Jacob’s career was as diverse as it was long-standing. Starting as a young man working for Lon Myatt on the farm, he developed a deep appreciation for agriculture. He later joined Hoof Products and Maquoketa Lumber Company, where he honed his skills and work ethic. Jacob dedicated nearly 15 years to the Pacific Coast Feather Company until its closure. In the last four years of his life, he was a valued employee at Dittmer Recycling, where his commitment and reliability were greatly appreciated.
Beyond his professional life, Jacob was a man of many interests. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as doing chores on the farm he rented, hunting, and camping with his brother. Mowing yards was not just a task for Jacob but an activity he genuinely enjoyed. He was an active participant in bowling leagues, where his competitive spirit and camaraderie shone through. His creative side was expressed through cross-stitching, and he had a passion for capturing the beauty of nature through his photography, especially wildlife.
Jacob’s greatest joy, however, was his family. Survivors include his wife Angela Brewster of Maquoketa, IA; children, Sasha (Tyler) Johnson of Maquoketa, IA, Cody Brewster of Colona, IL, James Weimerskirch of Clarence, IA, Dalton Brewster of Platteville, WI, Nate Weimerskirch of Miles, IA, Logan (Brianna McDonald) Brewster of Bettendorf, IA, Christian Brewster of Marion, IA, Brittany Clark of Maquoketa, IA, and Victoria (Jacob Redling) Brewster of Maquoketa, IA; 7 grandchildren whom brought him immense joy; his mother, Nancy Brewster of Baldwin, IA; sisters, Alice (Ron) Holland of Rockwell, IA, Wilma (Aaron) Patterson of Clinton, IA, Wanda (George) Miller of Ft. Worth, TX, Kathy (Ted) Howell of Canton, IA, and Celeste (Ben) Cunningham of Sioux City, IA; and brothers, Paul Brewster of Sac City, IA, Wilbert (Shannon) Brewster of Wheatland, IA, Eddie (Lois) Brewster of Davenport, IA, Mike (Kim) Brewster of Davenport, IA, and Danny Brewster of Maquoketa, IA. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, his father Wilbert Dale Brewster, and his beloved niece Lindsey Renee Brewster.
A private graveside service and burial celebrating his life will be at Pence Cemetery, rural Baldwin, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 P.M., Monday, March 18, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation.
