Jerold Stumpner

Jerold Stumpner, 86, of Balltown, Iowa passed away February 24, 2024 at his home in Minnesota after a four-year battle with cancer. No visitation or service.  Behr Funeral Home is assisting the family.

He was born on April 18, 1937 in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, son of Phillip and Josephine (Jelinek) Stumpner. He married Alice Hoelker on September 7, 1963; she preceded him in death in 1981. Jerold served in the Army and retired from John Deere Dubuque Works in 1992. Jerry loved spending time with his kids and their families and entertaining them with “Grandpa jokes” and word plays, taking them on hikes or trips, and telling them stories from his childhood. He could often be found hiking the trails of his favorite state parks, canoeing, and enjoying the outdoors. When he was not outdoors, he was a hobbyist, creating many balsa wood airplanes, rockets, and other models. Family came first to Jerry, and he was always ready to help relatives when they needed a hand, as well as his kids and grandkids on countless occasions with driving lessons, pet sitting, house repairs, and much more.

Surviving are his daughter, Dawn Stumpner of Madison, Wisconsin and his son, David (Jodi) Stumpner of North St. Paul, Minnesota, five grandchildren, Paulo, José, Manolo, Samantha & Abigail.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Carol & Josephine (Cookie). His wish will be honored to not have a Mass or service, but rather to play “Big Rock Candy Mountain” by Burl Ives and “Headed to the Last Roundup” by Gene Autry to remember him by. Think of him the next time you take a hike or enjoy the outdoors.

When you weep for me, remember it was meant to be

Lay me down and when you leave, remember I’ll be at your sleeve.

So remember as you wipe your tears the joy I knew throughout the years,

as I lived my life with you I pray that thought will see you through.

We may not be together in the way we used to be;

We are still connected by a cord no eye can see.

So, whenever you need to find me, we’re never far apart.

If you look beyond the horizon and listen with your heart.

Jack A. Edens

Jack Arthur Edens, 89, passed away on February 18, 2024.

A long-time restaurateur has taken his talents, his secret recipes, his megawatt smile, and all his silly songs to a new venue where he will be serving the Lord.

He will rejoin his mother Sally (Thomas), his father Vance, and his stepfather Tony Pope. Also there to greet him are his siblings Wally, Tim, Orrie, and Betty Olmstead.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Crossroads Community Church in Galena, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm with a church service and dinner to follow. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.

Jack was born September 20, 1934, raised in Chicago, and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1952. He then served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany where he coached baseball, dealt some cards, and blew up a few bridges as a member of the explosives team.

When Jack returned, he became the head florist for Pope’s Florist and Garden Center. Jack eventually partnered with his brother Tim and bought the family business from his folks. They parlayed that business into what became the most happening place in Mundelein, Pope’s Garden of Eden – the name honoring both fathers at the same time.

Jack moved to Waukegan, sans his brother Tim, to open Double D Pizza in 1978. He found a new partner in business, and in life, Tamara Tiernan. The two married in 1986 and later moved to Galena to open Procento’s Pizzeria with their sons Jack and Ryan. Jack retired in 2019 after many years of bringing joy to people through his food and hospitality. Jack went by numerous nicknames; Smilin’ Jack, Pizza Man, Senior, Jack Pope, Papa Jack, and Mr. Jack, just to name a few. Jack enjoyed spending his free time fishing at Jim’s Pond, but never believe the fish stories! Wherever Jack went, there was sure to be a song and a smile to follow, even if he did make up his own words to most of his songs.

Jack was always full of jokes, and he found true joy in making others laugh. Jack was an avid fan of Chicago sports teams; he loved the Chicago Cubs and Da’ Bears. Jack also liked to hustle his family on all sporting events, as he never lost a football bet. He will always “Be #1” in our hearts.

Fear not- all the stories about the man, the myth, the legend of Smilin’ Jack will live into infinity through the people he loved the most and left behind: His beloved wife Tammy, his sister Caroline Adornetto, his daughter Liz Edwards (Dave), his sons Jack (Ella), and Ryan. Stepdaughter Julie (Tim) Deal, his grandchildren, Ally, Ashlyn, Lana, Chelsea (Angel), and Troy, and a ton of admiring nieces and nephews.

On behalf of the Edens family, we would like to express our gratitude to the staff at Galena Stauss Nursing Home for the kindness, loving care, and friendship you provided to Jack. Thank you, Dr. Gullone, for the years of care and empathy. A special thanks to Hospice of Dubuque for their guidance and compassion in Jack’s final days. We pray that God will continue to bless the hands of the healthcare workers who have made such a positive and lasting impact in our lives.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Dubuque in Jack’s memory. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.furlongfuneralchapel.com

It is difficult to measure the number of lives he touched.

Diane M. Dally

Diane Marie Dally, 78, of Denver, CO entered eternal life on December 9, 2023. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30am Friday, March 15 at Risen Christ Catholic Parish, 3060 S Monaco Parkway, Denver, and will be live-streamed at www.risenchristchurch.org. Reception to follow in the Risen Christ Parish Hall. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.horancares.com.

Born May 12, 1945 in Dubuque, Iowa to parents Herman and Alverda Feldman. She was a delightful addition to her family, joining older brothers Glen and Vern. She beat the odds at age 2 when doctors found and removed a Wilms tumor and she lived the rest of her life with only one kidney. She was an avid 4-H girl; winning the blue ribbon for her famous banana bread recipe that her grandchildren enjoy to this day. She was the President of the County 4-H club. She traveled extensively with her parents to United Commercial Travelers events, and she was thrilled to have visited all but one state (Alaska) in the country.

Diane attended grade school at St. John the Baptist in Peosta, Iowa. She graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School in Dubuque, Iowa in 1963 where she made the varsity cheerleading squad. She loved cheer which is fitting because she carried her cheerleading attitude throughout her entire life as she championed her family and many friends. High school was full of pure joy for Diane with Friday night sock hops, continued leadership in 4-H, and basement “Roaring 20’s” parties with her family.

After graduation Diane moved to the Quad Cities for Business school. She worked for Flexsteel for a few years with some dear friends and made many hilarious and lasting memories, often involving long lunches and happy hours. She married Richard Dally of Dubuque in 1969 and moved to Denver a few years later where she made another lifelong friend working for Diner’s Club. One of her greatest gifts was her talent for making and keeping friends.

Diane loved living in Denver. She became a mother in 1976, earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Colorado Women’s College in 1981 and her next professional move would introduce her to a family she would work for and alongside for the rest of her life (as accountant, HR manager, social director, and official pastry chef). She absolutely loved working for the Scott Family. In 1983 she accepted a position working for the grandfather, William C. Scott II (Gramps) and in 2023, days before her passing, she lovingly spent her last day in the office, at her professional home Innovative Brick Systems, surrounded by Gramps’ grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Diane’s other professional love and side gig was catering. She joined Epicurean Catering in 1997 to work the International Golf Tournament in Castle Pines. She was originally only going to work the 5-day tournament. However, she enjoyed it so much that she worked with Epicurean part-time for the next 26 years. She also reigned for a time as Queen of the Plum Room at the Oxford Hotel where she met another best friend for life. She loved the parties, she loved the people – her catering community – and her true undying love was working as a suite attendant for the Denver Broncos games for over 15 years. In her last few years, after sustaining an injury to her shoulder and undergoing treatments for breast cancer, she still toyed with the idea of working another Bronco season.

Diane truly lived. She was purposeful and thoughtful, generous and warm. She loved life and had an unwavering positive spirit. You were lucky to simply know her because she would make you feel like you were one in a million. She never missed a birthday, or an occasion for a card or a telephone call, she was passionate about baking and making sweets for all of her family and friends, neighbors and co-workers. She also loved the arts and theater and was a season ticket holder at the Denver Center for Performing Arts for over 30 years. She frequented shows on Broadway and in London’s West End. She loved Monet, and treasured touring his gardens in Giverny, France. She also was drawn to the images of the American Southwest immortalized by Georgia O’Keeffe.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter and best friend Danielle (Harold) Dally Brigman and the three lights of her life, her granddaughters Emily, Megan and Brooke Brigman of Destin, Florida. Siblings: Glen (Shirley) Feldman, Vern (Theresa) Feldman, many nieces and nephews, her decades-long companion John (Jack) Lane and loving friends who became her family over the years. She is also survived by her former husband Richard Dally. Her dear cousin, Doris (Farney) Schueller passed one month after Diane, no doubt missing her weekly visits with updates and treats.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Alverda Feldman, niece Kathleen Feldman, nephews James Feldman, Joe Feldman and Richard Feldman and great-nephews Barrett Jones and Maclean Feldman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of her favorite charities: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, ASPCA, American Heart Association, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, National Park Foundation and The Nature Conservancy.

Phyllis K. Driscoll

Phyllis K. “Philly” Driscoll, 69, of Epworth, IA passed away Friday, February 23, 2024. A visitation for immediate family will beat Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, IA.

Phyllis was born on March 31, 1954 in Dubuque, IA, daughter of Charles and Patricia (Plumley) Driscoll. Most of her childhood was spent on the family farm in Epworth, IA. She graduated from Western Dubuque High School in 1972 and went straight into the workforce taking her first job at KMART. There she made friendships that brought her happiness throughout her entire life. In July of 1976, she packed a bag and her passport and headed off on the adventure of a lifetime to Brazil. There she visited and stayed with a family friend, Ellie, who had stayed with her family as a foreign exchange student in high school.

Phyllis was a woman of many talents. If you ever stopped in for a visit, you were greeted with a “Well, how the hell are ya,” followed by a warm hug. Cooking was her passion, a skill that was passed down from her mother, Patricia. There was always a seat at her table for everyone, even her dogs!

After her mom passed, Phyllis became the family hub, making sure to check in with everyone all while keeping up with sending cards on holidays and birthdays. Phyllis also had an immaculate memory and never passed up a chance to take a trip down memory lane, always recalling every last detail. During the summer months, Philly enjoyed her time outside working in her garden and tending to her flowers. Nothing filled her heart with more joy than time spent with her nieces and nephews.

Of course, we can’t forget her pride and joy, the dogs! Over the years, Phyllis and Dennis were the proud parents of many dogs who received the same love and devotion they showed each other.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one son-in-law, Robert Charles Delaney; and one great nephew, Jeffery Joseph Delaney.

Those left to cherish her memory include the lifelong love of her life, Dennis Dietz; son, Shane Dietz (Olivia); grandson, Ethan Dietz; three sisters-in-laws, Jolene Johnson, Carol Spinosa, and Mary Davis; three siblings, Terry (Marylou) Driscoll, Thomas (Lisa) Driscoll, Cindy (Terry) Bolsinger; and eight nieces and nephews, Cora (Nick) Roe, Megan (Aaron) Witter, Kevin (Chris) Delaney, Michael (Rebekah) Delaney, Matt (Manessa Michel) Delaney, Emily (Matt) McKeon, Heather Bolsinger, and Clay (Darlene) Bolsinger.

“It isn’t what we leave behind, it’s what we leave in people’s hearts that count.”
