Nancy M. Hess
Nancy M. (Knapp) Hess, 74, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Cascade, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday November 2nd, 2022, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday November 5th, 2022, at St. Joseph the Worker with Fr. Brian Dellaert officiating. Friends and family may visit from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the church. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.
Nancy was born on October 22nd, 1948, daughter of Hillard and Eleanor (Simmons) Knapp. She was united in marriage to her husband Richard Hess.
Nancy loved and cherished her husband, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed family trips, camping, mom/daughter shopping trips, traveling, car rides, and playing cards. She devoted her life to her family. She attended all of her daughters’ activities and continued through with her grandchildren. Her family adored her, and she adored them.
Nancy is survived by her husband Richard “Dick” of 56 years, her five daughters: Tammy (John) Feldmann, Tina Medel, Tracey (Rick Parker) Lynch, Tanya Miller, and Tiffany (Scott) Schiffer, her thirteen grandchildren: Samuel, Lucas, and Jax Feldmann, Treyvor Craven, Devon and Dylan Blanchard, Whitney Lynch, Noah, Cloie, and Sydni Miller, Laklend, Zayden, and Greyson Schiffer, along with two great-grandchildren Roman and Braylee Blanchard.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mary Ann O’Shea and Margaret Smith, brothers Donald and Robert Knapp, parents-in-law Lucille and Henry Hess, in-laws Thomas Smith, Donald Pettinger, Mike Hess, Pat Hess, and Linda Lou Hess.
Thank you to the Dialysis team, doctors, and staff for the care they provided to Nancy. A special thank-you to Hospice of Dubuque along with family and friends for unwavering support during these difficult days.
The memory of Nancy will live on in our hearts forever. The stories and memories of her will be shared for generations to come.
Laurie J. Davis
Laurie Jean (Krohn) Davis, 59, of the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, passed away at 12:53 a.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at the Care Community.
Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Grant Hill Cemetery, rural Galena, IL. The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque, IL is serving the family.
Laurie was born on August 18, 1963, in Centerville, IA, the daughter of Keith M. and Florence J. (Efaw) Krohn. Laurie was an avid roller-skater, skating at least once a week.
She was united in marriage to Eric M. Davis on April 8, 1983, and later divorced on September 5, 2007. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis early in her marriage. After her divorce she lived with her mother until entering the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community on April 25, 2019, where she spent the past three years.
Surviving is her mother, Florence J. Krohn of East Dubuque, IL; a sister, Melissa (Keith) Benson of Hanover, IL, nieces and nephews, Jeremy, Tina, Teresa, Brenda, Cheryl, and Tracy; and brother-in-law, John Binninger of East Dubuque.
Laurie was preceded in death by her father, Keith, sister, Denise (Fowler) Binninger and nephew, Jonathan Binninger.
Florence and family wish to thank the nurses and staff that cared for Laurie, especially her favorite nurse Angie.

James Jahncke
James “Jim” Jahncke, 91, of Galena, IL passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. A funeral mass will be held at 11 AM, Monday, November 7, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena, and where friends may call after 10:30 AM until the time of mass. Friends may call from 2 to 4 PM, Sunday, November 6, 2022, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Galena VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193.
Jim was born March 23, 1931, in Galena the son of Clarence and Anna (Linenfelser) Jahncke. He graduated from Galena High School in 1949. Shortly after graduation, he joined the Navy and served until 1953. During that time, he was stationed in Japan for a time. After he got out of the Navy, he ended up in odd jobs for a few years until 1956 when he decided to rejoin the military by going into the Air Force. He met his wife Marlene during that time, and they married on July 16, 1960. During their 54 years of marriage, they had four children, a daughter Karen (who died in infancy), two sons, Stephen, and Michael, and a daughter, Barbara. During his time in the Air Force, he was stationed at various bases around the world including Turkey, Korea, England, Texas, and Maryland. In 1975, he retired from the Air Force and eventually brought his family back to his hometown of Galena. Jim did various jobs until he was hired at the Dubuque Post Office. He worked there until he retired in 1997. Jim was very much involved with the VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193 of Galena and held the positions of commander and chaplain for the VFW.
He is survived by his children, two sons, Stephen, of Elkhart, IN, and Michael of Galena, and a daughter, Barbara of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his daughter, and two brothers, John and Charles “Carl”.

Brenda C. Dowell
Brenda C. Dowell, 61 of Scales Mound, IL passed away unexpectedly and joined her daughter, Aimee, in heaven on Monday, October 31, 2022, at Midwest Medical Center, Galena, IL. Private family services will be held at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena.
She was born May 22, 1961, in Kentucky. Brenda grew up in the Kentucky/Indiana area prior to moving to the Midwest. She was united in marriage to Dean “Doc” Dowell Sr. on November 19, 1980. Brenda enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom until later when she joined the health care field. She worked in Shullsburg, Sinsinawa Mound, and the Galena Nursing Homes. The pride and joy of Brenda’s life was her family.
She is survived by her husband, Dean “Doc” Dowell Sr., of Scales Mound, two sons, Dean (Laura) Dowell Jr. of Galena, and Ben (Becky) Dowell of Scales Mound, two grandchildren, Riley and Hallie, her mother, Helen Carroll, stepdad, Virgil Carroll, and her brother, sisters, brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Brenda was preceded in death by her daughter, Aimee Dowell, her father and mother-in-law, Rollin (Ramona) Dowell, and a sister, Norma.

Anna Mae Welter
Anna Mae Welter, 90, of Dubuque and formerly of Holy Cross, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Unity Point Finley Hospital in Dubuque.
To honor Anna Mae’s life, family and friends may visit from 3-7 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross where a prayer service will follow at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 7, 2022, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Rev. Tyler Raymond will officiate with the assistance of Deacon William Mauss. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery following mass. Kramer Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Anna Mae was born November 1, 1932, in Dubuque, the daughter of Arthur and Henrietta (Friederick) Kress. Growing up, she worked on the Kress dairy and turkey farm near Specht’s Ferry. Her first job off the farm was as a waitress at Roshek’s Packet Room in Dubuque. She married Ralph A. Welter on October 28, 1952, in Sherrill. Together they ran a dairy farm near Balltown for 23 years before moving to Holy Cross. Later they moved to Assisi Village followed by Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque. Anna Mae was a member of the Holy Cross Rosary Society and Catholic Order of Foresters. She was a hard worker on the farm raising six kids and enjoyed gardening, cooking, and milking cows. In her free time, she loved dancing, playing euchre, and visiting neighbors. Anna Mae was a devout Catholic and tried to attend Mass and pray the rosary daily.
Survivors include her six children: Darlene (William) Mauss of Dubuque, Eugene Welter and Vernon (Rose) Welter, both of Sherrill, Tom Welter of Eagan, MN, Barb (Steve) Schmitt of Coralville, and Joan (Lee) Hoerner of Epworth, 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, her siblings: Dorothy Wolf and Paul Kress, both of Dubuque, Norbert (Shirley) Kress of Zwingle, Leo (Betty) Kress and James (Janet) Kress, all of Sherrill, and a sister-in-law, Cindy Kress of Mud Lake.
Anna Mae was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, John and Antonia (Roth) Welter, her husband, Ralph in 2012, sister at birth, Mary Kress, brother, Arthur “A.J.” Kress, daughter-in-law, Becky Welter, great grandson, Miles Fitz, sister-in-law, Frances Kress, brothers-in-law: Gene Lahey and Don Wolf, other in-laws: Alberta (Alphonse) Roling, Lucille (Clarence) Theisen, Kermit (Olive) Mitchell, Germaine (Albert) Kloser, Robert (Marcella) Boeckenstedt, Charlie (Edna) Rausch, and Bernice Welter in infancy.
Anna Mae had a heart of gold, and her gentle soul will be forever missed.

Betty J. Carlin

Betty was born on October 12, 1929, in Des Moines, Iowa, daughter of Harley M. and Sadie Burton “Bertie” (McMaster) Bouma, Sr.
Betty graduated from Carl Schurz High School in Chicago. After school, she married Robert MacFarland and they had 4 sons together before going their separate ways. Luckily, Betty would find love again and was united in marriage to Arvid Carlin in February of 1966, in Chicago. Sadly, Arvid passed away in 1995. Betty was employed as a manager of Venture Department Store in Chicago, and after their retirement she and Arvid moved to Dubuque to enjoy a more relaxing rural setting. She loved the area and began volunteering with the local schools reading to the children and helping them to improve their own skills. In her free time, Betty also enjoyed crocheting and watching horror movies and sci-fi films. She had an extensive movie and vinyl album collection. Betty liked cooking and going out to eat with family and friends, and you could always be sure that the food would be well done. She was quick witted, sharp as a tack, had great hearing and a wicked sense of humor. The holidays brought her great joy and she loved decorating the house and planning gatherings. Betty’s faith was an important aspect of her life and she was long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she volunteered her time regularly. Betty was a generous soul and was never one to sit still. She always wanted to help out in any way that she could, and had a personality that made it easy for her to develop long lasting friendships with people she came in contact with. We have been truly blessed to have Betty here on this Earth with us for the last 93 years. She was a special lady who left a lasting impact on everyone around her and will be greatly missed.

Ian Dickenson
Ian Dickenson, 21, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on the evening of October 28th, 2022.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Burlington, IA. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.
Ian was born on August 22nd, 2001 in Burlington, IA the son of Jeremy Myers and Megan (Dickenson) Lemon.
Ian loved spending time with his family and friends; he also enjoyed video games, fishing, and going on walks. He was able to light up any room with his smile. He will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.
He is survived by his parents: Jeremy (Brandi) Myers and Megan (Gilbert Blickenstaff) Lemon; his siblings, Faith Myers, Seth Lemon, Emma Myers, Skyeleigh Johnson, and Winter Lemon.
Dominic J. Sweeney
Dominic J. Sweeney, 79, of Zwingle, IA passed away on October 24, 2022 after a short illness.
Dominic was born on November 13, 1942, the son of Justin and Florence Sweeney. During his 79 years of life, he impacted many people’s lives with is strong presence in the AA Community for over 44 years. He also served in the Navy and the Navy Reserves.
He was preceded in death by his parents Justin and Florence and a brother-in-law Eldon Manderscheid.
Dominic is survived by his children Leeann Hamilton, Laura (Brandon) Pollard and Justin Sweeney. His granddaughters Keri, Tiffany, Michaela and Brooklynn. His sister Judy Manderscheid along with nieces and nephews.

Marcella Isenhart
Marcella Isenhart, 96 of Dubuque, passed away peacefully, Sunday October 30th, 2022 at Stonehill Health Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, November 5th, at St. Raphael’s Cathedral with Fr. Quint presiding and Fr. Dan Knepper concelebrating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 pm on Friday, November 4th at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. A wake service will be held at 4:00 pm.
Marcella was born on March 3rd, 1926, to Reinhold and Julia (Sommer) Hohenhorst, on Beaver Island on the Mississippi river, off Clinton, IA. She graduated from Mount Saint Claire in Clinton, IA where she would row her boat to school every day.
She was united in marriage to Rhodes “Bud” Isenhart on June 6th, 1947. They were married 65 years before his passing in 2013.
She worked for 20 years at Prescott Elementary School in Dubuque, as a teacher’s assistant and a library aide. She was past president of the Nativity Parish guild and a cub scout leader. She loved reading, gardening, and was an excellent seamstress. She shared a passion for genealogy with her husband Bud and traveled to Germany and Ireland in their many searches.
Marcella loved her family more over everything, and was a caregiver to her mother, who lived with the family. She hosted countless family get togethers on a weekly basis at the family home.
She is survived by her six children; Barb (Tom) Scholl, Bob (Sue) Isenhart, Sue (John) Hoffman, Chuck Isenhart, all of Dubuque, Michael Isenhart of Cedaredge, CO and Tom (Joanne) Isenhart of Gilbert, IA.; 15 grandchildren Tina (Sharon) Rosenberg-Scholl, David (Shannon) Scholl, Julia (Shane) Holdridge, Katie (Tom) Cronk and Dan (Claire) Scholl, Aaron (Danelle), Anna and Ellie (Keith Rossman) Isenhart , Rickand Chad Hoffman; Jeremy, Ali and Ryan (Niki) Isenhart, Serine and Clare Isenhart; 23 great-grandchildren, Ian Rosenberg-Scholl, Ben and Sarah Scholl, Rachel and Leah Holdridge, Emily, Tony, and Ella Cronk, Mia and Lillian Scholl, Kristin and Kellen Isenhart, Jacob and Wade Hoffman, Maseo Tucker and Liberty Hoffman, Kaya and Jalen Isenhart, Xander Roney and Alayna Isenhart, Ottis and Ellis Isenhart, and Ava Isenhart; and nieces Sr. Jane McCarthy, Pat McCarthy, Dianne McCoy, and Kathy Willard.
She was preceded in death by her Husband, Bud, and her son Andy in 2013, her parents, a sister Colette, a brother Reinhold, brother-in-law Noel McCarthy, and nephews Tom McCarthy and Jim Detlefsen.
A heartfelt thank you to Sue and Bob for 2 years of loving care for Mom, enabling her to stay in her home. The family would also like to thank the staff at Stonehill for the excellent care they gave to Marcella.

Michael G. Truesdale
Michael George (Mike) Truesdale, 69, recently of Dubuque, Iowa passed away suddenly on his way home from hunting October 26, 2022.
Mike’s friends and family are invited to celebrate his life: Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday Nov 3, at Lawn Funeral Home, 7909 State Road, Burbank, IL. Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Friday Nov 4, at Saint Albert the Great Church, 8000 S. Linder Ave., Burbank, IL.
Mike was born in Evergreen Park, IL May 3, 1953, to George and Helen (nee Nemeth) Truesdale. The eldest of six children raised in Burbank, IL, Mike attended Saint Albert The Great and Reavis High School. While at Northern Illinois University, he joined the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) Fraternity, graduated in 1977, and later earned a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from NIU. Mike married Chris Lischett in 1984. They lived in Glen Ellyn, IL where they raised their two daughters. Mike loved coaching his daughters’ basketball teams and teaching them karate. Mike taught high school auto shop for the majority of the last 40 years, only recently retiring.
This summer Mike made a cross country trip in his classic Corvette visiting with family and friends on his way to play in the World Series of Poker. He lived life to the fullest and cherished spending time with his family, countless friends, and his TKE Brothers. As a recent retiree, he was busy pursuing his many interests, most notably: hunting, boating, drag racing and poker.
Mike is survived by his daughters, Rose Truesdale (Dylan Peterson) and Margaret Truesdale; their mother, Chris Lischett Truesdale; his siblings, Pamela Truesdale, Valerie Truesdale, Brian (Vicki) Truesdale, Gary (Janet) Truesdale, Wayne (Dana) Truesdale, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Patti Jo Leib
Patti Jo Leib, age 66, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on October 30, 2022, at Dubuque Specialty Care, while surrounded by her loving family. To honor Patti’s life, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1755 Delhi Street in Dubuque. Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship one hour prior to the service from 10:00–11:00 a.m. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Patti’s family.
Patti was born on October 23, 1956, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Leonard L. Leib, Sr. and Rosina “Freda” (Ward) Leib. She grew up with the knowledge that she had been gifted with some incredibly special traits and was eager to share them with the world around her. Patti was a proud graduate of the Hempstead Class of ’74 and spent many hours fulfilling her love of the water while on the swim team there, and on her favorite pair of water skis outside of school hours. She married in 1975, and during that marriage gave birth to two wonderful sons; Nathan and Nicholas. Patti spent her working years as a CNA and invested her time and talents at various facilities around the Dubuque area. She was a people person through and through making countless friends throughout her career and life. Patti found great satisfaction in her dedication to those she cared for, uplifting them on a daily basis with her natural ability to light up the lives of everyone she touched. Patti had a love for animals, especially dogs, and was famously know as the “Dog Whisperer” to those around her. She was also a part-time comedian in her mind and her sense of humor was endless and always on the mark. Her abilities to drag you deep into the story and eventually hit you with the perfect punchline was legendary among all who knew and loved her. Patti also enjoyed crocheting in her free-time and spending as much time as she could with her loved ones. We will miss Patti dearly and have no doubt that she is dancing once again just as she always loved to do in her mortal body.
Thank you, Patti, for simply being the best “you” that anyone could ask for. We truly believe that the Lord has graciously wiped away every tear now and your perfect immortal body has His praises on your lips for all of eternity.

Patti battled cancer head on, and having the support of such committed allies through each day was a blessing. The family would like to thank all those who cared for Patti throughout her life, especially in her final days. Life is rarely an easy journey on many levels. Having friends and family around who are willing to help carry the load of daily life alongside you, is a true blessing to be appreciated and acknowledged…Thank you!

Charline R. Petersen
Charline R. Petersen, 99, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Monday morning, October 31, 2022, at Maquoketa Care Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 A.M., Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, Delmar, Iowa.
Charline Ruth Bailey was born on January 12, 1923 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Charles Linius and Margaret C. (Klemme) Bailey. She was educated in country schools in Clinton County. She married Alvin F. Petersen on October 30, 1941 in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on August 17, 2006.
Charline farmed with her husband in rural Maquoketa for many years, and later worked at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa as a Nurse’s Aide.
Charline was a member of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, Joinerville Boat Club, and the Jackson County Farm Bureau. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, listening to country music, camping, and playing cards, especially Euchre.
Those left to honor her memory include her children, Gary (Joan) Petersen of Maquoketa, IA, and Wayne (Patricia) Petersen of Maquoketa, IA; son-in-law, Ken Keltner of Overland Park, KS; sister, Catherine Bailey of Maquoketa, IA; 6 grandchildren, Michelle Burkey, Bradley (Karen) Petersen, Jeremy (Jenny) Simmons, Eric Petersen, Greg (Kathryn) Petersen, and Kara (Adam) Kraxberger; and 6 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Remington, Abby, Aiden, Isaac, and Rachel. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alvin, daughter Judy Keltner, brothers Robert, Frank and Owen Bailey, sisters Marian Todd and Maxine Jones, and a half-sister, Jennie Smith.

Daniel G. Vondran
Daniel J. “Dan” Vondran, age 62, of Dubuque, passed away at 7:15 p.m., on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at Sunnycrest Manor. To honor Dan’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m., on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 2215 Windsor Avenue. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Steven M. Garner officiating. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Kieler, Wisconsin. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.
Dan was born on March 15, 1960, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Robert Charles and Grace Vivian (Kirchberg) Vondran.
Dan attended grade school at Immaculate Conception and graduated from Potosi High School. After school he entered the workforce with Noble Corporation in Farley doing injection plastic molding. After they closed, he worked at the Dubuque Packing Company and Lands’ End in Dodgeville, Wisconsin. Dan was very athletic and enjoyed running, weight lifting and body building. He even helped coach youth sports in Dodgeville. In his free time, Dan loved being outside and enjoyed hunting and fishing anytime he could. He had a wonderful personality and always made sure he thanked everyone and let them know how appreciated they were. Dan will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ronald F. Schroeder
Ronald F. “Ron” Schroeder, age 77, of Dubuque, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at his home. To honor Ron’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m., on Friday, November 4, 2022, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, with Rev. Steven M. Garner officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.
Ron was born on March 19, 1945, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Ervin and Sylvia (Link) Schroeder.
Ron attended school at Balltown and Holy Cross. He was a hard worker and started out helping on the family farm in Waupeton before going to work with Caradco, the Dubuque Packing Company on the short shift and at the same time got on at the John Deere Dubuque Works at the Experimental Farm driving tractors. He also worked at Flexsteel, mowed grass and helped his mom cleaning at Holy Ghost Church. In September of 1963, Ron also joined the Army National Guard. Ron was a devoted Catholic and a long time member of Holy Ghost Church. In his free time, he enjoyed listening to music at home, going to Bingo and the music events at Bethany Home, and he loved his candy bars, chocolate and pop. Ron made many friends after moving into his apartment at Bethany, and they meant the world to him. We are deeply saddened at losing Ron so suddenly in our daily lives, but know that he is now resting peacefully with his family members who have been called home before him.

Robert L. Cartigny
Robert Louis Cartigny, 93, of Dubuque and formerly of Bellevue, IA, passed away Monday, October 31, 2022, at Luther Manor in Dubuque.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 5, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, St. Donatus, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Rev. Will Layton will officiate. A private burial will be at Linwood Cemetery. Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory is entrusted with arrangements.
Robert was born on February 22, 1929, in Dubuque, to Louis and Bessie (Frost) Cartigny. He married Irma Hanselmann on Valentine’s Day 1960 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque. They celebrated 42 years of marriage before Irma preceded him in death on February 17, 2002.
Robert graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1947, where he played woodwinds in the symphony orchestra and school band. He won the school’s ping pong championship. He served in the National Guard for 8 years in the infantry and attended the University of Dubuque. His life’s work spanned many jobs: playing clarinet and saxophone for a Big Band, working at the Dubuque Pack, Nifty Distributors, K & H Distributors, and Blue Star Potato Chips, as office manager for Hanselmann Sheet Metal, at Roshek’s Department Store, Cosley Realty, and as manager of the Great Surplus Store.
He was a longtime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dubuque and St. John’s Lutheran Church in St. Donatus, was active in the Stephen Ministry, served as Treasurer and on the Board of Directors for the Dubuque Rescue Mission, and was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 2003. He was kind hearted and always ready to help those in need.
Robert had a special relationship with and was beloved by many nieces and nephews, with whom he traveled to Germany, Austria, France, Hawaii, and many other states in the United States. Robert is survived by his sisters-in-law Gerda Chappell and Anne Hanselmann and brother-in-law Roger Hanselmann and nieces and nephews; his cousin Marlin Avenarius and extended cousins of the Doty, Zepeski, and Schultz families; and his best friend, Marge Felderman.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Helen Cartigny in 1937 and Ruth Cartigny Calbreath in 1957.
