Janet L. Alexander

Janet L. Alexander, age 71, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on July 1, 2022, at ProMedica/ManorCare in Dubuque, while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Janet’s life, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 8, 2022, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 1870 St. Ambrose St, in Dubuque, with Father Steven Rosonke officiating.  Family and friends are invited to visit and share memories from 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. prior to the service at the church.  Inurnment will occur at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Janet’s family.

Janet was born on October 25, 1950, in Chicago, IL, a daughter to Eugene A. and Anna D. (Racz) Alexander.  She was proud to have spent her life in various towns around the Midwest and eventually made her way to Dubuque to be close to family when health issues arose after retirement.  Janet spent most of her working years with The National Livestock and Meat Board, and retired from Pepsico.  She also had a small catering business, and was notorious for her cooking and baking skills. She enjoyed traveling throughout her life. When she had free-time to indulge her favorite hobbies, you could find Janet working on her latest arts and crafts creations.  Although she had no children of her own, she enjoyed spending time with all her nieces and nephews. Janet was a kind soul with a strong spirit who loved life and those around her.  May the memories she leaves behind help to comfort those who knew and loved her and may the Lord keep her safe in His loving arms until we meet again.

Sr. Verna Gaul, OSF

Sister Verna (Clarence) Gaul, OSF, of the Clare House, in Dubuque, Iowa passed away on July 4, 2022 at the Clare House.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Clare House Chapel, Mount St. Francis Center at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2022.  Masks will be required. Guests unable to attend may participate via livestream at: www.youtube.com/dubuquefranciscans.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

She was born on April 18, 1924 in Granville, IA the daughter of John and Sylvia (Fischbach) Gaul. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis August 25, 1943 and made final profession of vows August 12, 1949.  Sister received her bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Portland, OR and her degree in library science from St. Cloud University, St. Cloud, MN. She ministered as a teacher in Iowa at Remsen, Norway, Mapleton, Rickardsville, Keota, Haverhill, Worthington, Guttenburg, St. Mary and St. Martin in Cascade, Granville, Sioux City, and Crescent City, CA.

Sister is survived by her sisters, Marjorie (Bill) Childers, Rosemary Wilkes, Clare (Ivan) Pottebaum, Katherine (Gayl) Hopkins; brothers, Joseph Gaul, Peter (Barbara) Gaul, Theodore (Elaine) Gaul; brother-in-law, Al Uhrich; nieces, nephews, and her Franciscan sisters.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother, Marie Gaul; her sisters, Gertrude Dekker, Joan (James) Meaden, Ruth (Harry) Block, Elinor (Loren) Crawford, Angela Uhrich, and Joanne Mahar; brothers, Mark Gaul and James Mahar; Sister-in-law, Cathy Gaul; Brothers-in-law Marshall Wilkes and Gene Nelson.

Terrance Sage

Terrance “Terry” Sage, 81, of Monticello, Iowa died Sunday, July 3, 2022.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 7, at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, where a visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor Frank Shepherd, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Cascade Community Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conducted by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Terry was born on July 28, 1940, in Mason City, IA, the son of Bert and Maycle (Rule) Sage.

In 1959 he graduated from Lamont School. After graduation he served in the United State Marine Corps from 1960- 1964. During his enlistment he served as a Helicopter Mechanic during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He married Susan Whetstine on November 24, 1965, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Terry started out as a self-employed truck driver, and then went to work at John Deere Dubuque Works for 10 years. He later drove truck for Air Liquide Group, and became a multi million-mile member during his trucking career.

Terry had a passion for snowmobile racing, and was the proud owner of “Outlaw”, attending Nationals and winning many awards. He was also the proud owner of the 1st Mustang 64 1/2 off the truck in Cedar Rapids. During the summer months Terry spent many days swimming and boating with his family at the cabin on Lake Delhi. He also enjoyed family camping trips to Clear Lake and Backbone State Park.

After retirement he delivered golf carts alongside his grandson Alex for Harris to many golf courses in the Dubuque area.  He loved going to flea markets and auctions to find vintage rolling pins and antique marbles.

Terry had a great sense of humor and enjoyed joking around with family. He enjoyed strawberry shortcake, playing euchre, playing games with the grandkids, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was an animal lover, especially the family dog, Cricket and the family cat, Max.

Terry and Susan enjoyed spending time at their home in Florida during the winter months after retirement.

Terry is survived by his wife; Susan, of Monticello; two children; Nancy (James) Bernal of Cascade, and Kathryn (Rick) Kretz of Asbury; his grandchildren, Jason (Brittany) Frommelt of Farley, Alex (fiancée Caitlyn Hancock) Kretz of Dubuque, Elizabeth (fiancé Drew Wagner) Kretz, of Dubuque, and Jake Bernal, of Dubuque; his step-granddaughters Nikki (fiancée Bridget Knasiak) Bernal, and Stephanie Bernal, both of Dubuque; his great grandchildren, Carter Dietz, Brady, and Avery Frommelt, and Harper Kretz; his siblings, Doug (Kay) Sage of Lamont, Greg (Brenda) Sage of CA, Jane (Christine) Sage of Golden Valley, MN, Jill Barnes of Saint Paul, MN, and Jodi Sage of Columbia, MO; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his nephew Scott Sage.

The family would like to thank everyone at Monticello Nursing & Rehab for their care of Terry and his family.

Maureen G. McAndrews

Maureen Glennys McAndrews, age 71, of Dubuque, passed away suddenly at 1:42 p.m., on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at Ennoble Manor.  To celebrate Maureen’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Friday, July 8, 2022, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at St. Raphael’s Cathedral, 231 Bluff Street, with Rev. John Cusick officiating.  Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery at a later date following cremation.

Maureen was born on November 26, 1950, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Glenn and Helen (Broderick) McAndrews.

Maureen graduated from Wahlert High School in Dubuque.  After school, she tried different jobs but excelled as a waitress for several different restaurants in Dubuque, a job she truly loved.  Maureen loved meeting people, and being out and about where she was great at striking up a conversation with anyone she met, a talent which also served her well in her work.

In her free time, she enjoyed going dancing and listening to music. The “cousin crew” loved when Maureen came over with her record player and 45s, and they would dance, laugh and have fun for many hours. She loved animals too, especially dogs, and appreciated a good horse ride now and then. As a huge basketball fan, she did her best never to miss a Philadelphia 76ers game. Maureen was a great cook and enjoyed baking goodies for everyone.  She loved good food, and liked to, “eat her way through town”, with Paul’s Tap cheeseburgers, West Dubuque Tap corn beef and cabbage and Jack’s Chicken Palace being some of her favorites. Maureen was a big hearted thoughtful soul that loved helping others, especially older folks who wanted company or needed groceries or errands run. She was competitive and liked playing cards, especially Euchre, joking around with family and friends and playing games with the kids.  Family was always the most important aspect of Maureen’s life.  She truly loved spending time with them, especially the grandchildren.  Maureen will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

Joan G. Miller

Joan G. Miller, 92, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Saturday morning, July 2, 2022, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A private family graveside service and burial celebrating her life will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.  Cremation has taken place.  The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

Joan Grace Elkins was born on June 7, 1930 in Iowa to Hamilton Dean and Cora (Nieland) Elkins.  She was a graduate of Maquoketa High School.  She married Donald Dean Miller on March 19, 1968 in Clinton County, Iowa.

Joan had worked as a bartender at various establishments and also at several retail clothing stores including Hamilton’s Clothing, Fashion Crossroads, and Schublin’s.

Joan enjoyed doing embroidery and spending time with her family.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Kathy (Dan) Hoeper of TX, Patricia Colson of Bettendorf, IA, Dennis (Jackie Duggan) Miller of Maquoketa, IA, Vicki (Owen) Bickford of Monmouth, IA, Kevin Miller of Davenport, IA, Vanessa (Joaquin) Fuentes of Germantown, MD, and Rebecca “Becki” Miller of Monmouth, IA; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald on November 28, 2021, brothers Paul Elkins and Howard Elkins, sister Arlene Ellis, and two grandchildren Michael Paul Bickford and Curtis Allen Bickford.

Lawrence M. Jaster

Lawrence Milo Jaster, 77, of Bellevue, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2022 at Dubuque Specialty Care.  Military Honors will be conducted by Bellevue American Legion Post #273 on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 10:00 AM at the Freedom Rock in Bellevue.  Private Burial will be at the Clark Family Cemetery on Big Spring Road in rural Clayton County  (Elkader, IA).

Local arrangements are entrusted at Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue.

Milo was born, June 19, 1945 in Bellevue, the son of Lawrence John and Mae Clark Jaster.  He graduated from Bellevue Community High School in 1963, then he began a career in the US Air Force for 22 years 1 month and 1 day before being Honorably Discharged as a Master Sergeant.  Lawrence married Victoria Jenkins on April 7, 1965.  Lawrence’s military services took him and his family all around the world, he then was a TV Transmitter Engineer  & Assistant Chief Engineer for many stations including Texas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, and Illinois, before settling back into Bellevue in his home that his parents built themselves.

Survivors include his wife, Vickie; his children, Eric (Alisha) Jaster, Darren Jaster, and Litza Jaster Ritter; grandchildren, Garrett Jaster and Maverick Ritter; siblings, James (Donna) Jaster, and Beverly (Anthony) Habeger.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in law Russell & Richard Jenkins and sisters in-law, Brenda Jenkins Maass & Dolores Jenkins

William L. Wodrich, IV

William L. “Billy” Wodrich, IV, 18, beloved son of William and Sonia Wodrich passed away on July 1, 2022, the result of an automobile accident.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, July 7th, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a service will be held at 6:00 p.m., followed by a car ride through Sonic Drive-In and back to the Airline Inn in Key West where a celebration of his life will be held.

William was born on March 16, 2004, in Dubuque the son of William J. and Sonia (Herting) Wodrich. He attended Earlville Elementary School, Briggs Elementary and Table Mound Elementary. He attended middle school at Roosevelt and was finishing his senior year at Dubuque Senior High School.

He worked at Dairy Queen and Casey’s General Store both in Key West and was most recently working at Myers-Cox in Peosta. He aunt recalls how he always put extra topping on her blizzard when he was working at Dairy Queen.

He loved trying new sports, he was in baseball through elementary school, track and football in middle school and he was part of the D.A.S.H. swim team for a year. Most recently his love of cars brought him to all the car meets and shows in the Dubuque and East Dubuque area. Whether he had a car to bring or not he loved to go and see the other cars, but most importantly he enjoyed talking with the other guys.

Little Billy as so many know him by loved going on family vacations to amusement parks and going on roller coaster after roller coaster with his sister. He always was up for a drive-in movie, he enjoyed going to the gym, and anytime he could he loved to hang out with friends.  He especially loved cars, first falling in love with his older brother Marcus’s Mustang, prompting him to get a Mustang as his first car, and he soon could tell you everything about any car. He was always ready for any new adventure anyone wanted to do.

He is survived by his parents William and Sonia; his sister Samantha; his brother Marcus; grandmothers Nancy Wodrich and Claire Herting; three nephews Bryson, Zayden and Jaxon Hute. His aunts and uncles: Mike and Laura Herting, Chuck and Amy Herting, Rob and Norma Herting, Tony and Laurel Herting, Penny (Mike Healey) Wodrich, Chip and Pam Wodrich and Scott and Becca Wodrich. He is also survived by many cousins and his faithful companion Chase his golden retriever who spent every night either sleeping at his feet or snoring in front of his door.

Billy was preceded in death by his grandfather’s William C. Wodrich and Loras M. Herting.

In lieu of flowers a William L. Wodrich IV memorial fund will be established through Alliant Credit Union.

The family would like to thank the Dubuque Fire and EMS, Dubuque Police and Sheriff Depts. Especially Officer Robe, the Iowa State Patrol and the Leonard Funeral Home for all their care, kindness and compassion they gave during the tragic time.

 


 

Jean A. Nauman

Jean Ann Nauman, 87, of Cascade, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at Accura Health in Cascade, Iowa.

Visitation for Jean was held from 3 to 7 p.m., on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa, where a prayer service was held at 2:30 p.m. and CDA and Cascade American Legion Auxiliary was held a rosary at 4:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Jean was held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa, with Rev. Mark Osterhaus presiding.  Assisting Deacon was Joseph Schockemoehl.   Lectors were Nikki Nauman, Ella Nauman and Molly Mueller.  Eucharistic Ministers were Laura Glynn and Matt Nauman.  Placing of the pall was done by Patty O’Hollearn, Dave Nauman, Laura Glynn, Jane Donovan, Judy Brimeyer, Joann O’Connell, Sue Umhoefer, Joe Nauman, Amy Funke, Matt Nauman, Jake Nauman and Carrie Sery.  Giftbearers were Kelly Wonder, Nate Brimeyer and Sawyer Sery. Honorary pallbearers were Kelly Wonder, Katie Nauman, Molly Mueller, Scott and Nate Brimeyer, Tim O’Connell, Amanda & Aaron Umhoefer, Jaye and Nikki Nauman, Ben Funke, Ella Nauman, Sawyer and Lucy Sery.  A Eulogy was given by Carrie Sery and Jake Nauman.  Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.

An Honorary escort was afforded by the Cascade Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Casketbearers for Jean were Luke O’Hollearn, Kristen Mitchell, Nick Glynn, Andy Brimeyer, Will O’Connell, Alex Umhoefer, Jack Nauman, Zach Funke, Carson Nauman, Madelyn Nauman and Charlie Sery.

Jean was born on August 16, 1934, in Sherrill, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Christina (Wilwert) Kraus.  Jean was united in marriage to Lawrence E. Nauman on September 7, 1954 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Sherrill, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on February 10, 2008.

Faith, Family, Friends and Fun are words to describe Jean.  She was a very faith filled person taking an active role as a member of St. Mathias Parish in Cascade.  She made family her number 1 priority with her unconditional love. Many people called her friend. She was a number 1 fan of the Cascade Cougars and Chicago Cubs. She was proud to call Cascade her home.

She was a member of the St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, the Prayer Shawl group, the St. Matthias Befrienders, and a funeral dinner volunteer.  Jean was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas and the Cascade American Legion Auxiliary.

Jean is survived twelve children, Patty (Mike) O’Hollearn of New Hampton, Dave (Sue) Nauman of Mason City, Laura (Mike) Glynn of Dubuque, Jane (Tim) Donovan of Cascade, Judy (Dave) Brimeyer of Cedar Rapids, Joann (Ray) O’Connell of Zwingle, Sue Umhoefer of North Mankato, MN, Joe (Laura) Nauman of Robins, Amy (Tim) Funke of Dyersville, Matt (Tammy) Nauman of Cascade, Jake (Heidi) Nauman of Cedar Rapids, and Carrie (Tim) Sery of Lakeville, MN; 25 Grandchildren; 11 Great Grandchildren; five siblings, Jim Kraus of Cuba City, WI, William (Norma) Kraus, Mary (Duane) Kruse, Elaine Hildebrand all of Dubuque, and John (Cheryl) Kraus of Galesburg, IL; one sister-in-law, Irma Kintzle of Dubuque.

She is also preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, John Umhoefer; a sister-in-law, Sue Kraus; a brother-in-law, Tom Hildebrand, her in-laws, Jacob and Edwina Nauman and Elmer Kintzle.

Donald J. Knapp

Donald J. Knapp, 90, of Cascade, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at his home in Cascade, Iowa.

Visitation for Don was held from 9 to 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa.  The Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa assisted the family with arrangements.

A mass of Christian Burial for Don was held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa, with Rev. Mark Osterhaus presiding.  Assisting Deacon was Joe Schockemoehl.  Lectors were Marsh Wolff and Leandra Walker.  Petitions were done by Lindsey Humpal.  Eucharistic Minister was John McGuire.  Placing of the pall was done by Janice Knapp, Lu Oldaker, Gregory Knapp, Martin Knapp, Walter Knapp, Linda Reiter, Lydia Strief and Nicholas Knapp.  Giftbearers were Danielle Benn, Kayla Staner, Morgan Strief, Maggie Reiter and Jenny Knapp.  Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.

Casketbearers for Donald were Phil Draude, Brad Conrad, Jack Reiter, Connor Knapp, Sam Knapp, Andy Knapp and Brian Drew.

Don was born on March 20, 1932, in Monticello, Iowa, son of Hillard and Eleanor (Simmons) Knapp.  He graduated from St. Martin’s High School, 1950, received his Associate’s degree in police science and corrections from Kirkwood Community College and later attended the University of Iowa. Don was united in marriage to Janice L. Freese on August 8, 1953 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello, Iowa.

Don went on to work in corrections for Twenty-six years.  He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1981 to 1993, as a Democrat, and as Chair of Appropriations Subcommittee, Agriculture/Land Stewardship and Natural Resources, 71st and 72nd General Assemblies.

He was a member of the St. Matthias Parish in Cascade. He was also a member and Past Grand Knight of the Cascade Knights of Columbus Council #930, and Past officer of the Jaycees, Boy Scout leader, and former justice of the peace.

Don is survived by his wife of 68 years, Janice Knapp of Cascade; seven children: Lu Oldaker of Coggon, Gregory (Joyce) Knapp, Martin (Julie) Knapp both of Cascade, Walter Knapp of Dubuque, Linda (Alan) Reiter of Monmouth, Lydia (Mark) Streif of Bernard, and Nicholas (Kim Clark) Knapp of Mt. Prospect, IL; 15 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one sister, Nancy (Dick) Hess of Dubuque.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Brad Knapp; one daughter, Martha Knapp; two sisters, Mary Ann Oshea, and Margaret Smith; brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas Smith, Jean (John Hines) (Clarence) Hosford, Joyce (Paul) Gassmann, and Duane (Jeanette) Freese.

 


 

Wray A. Childers

Wray Allen Childers, 65, of Durango, died Saturday, July 2, 2022, at Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque, with his family by his side, after a 14 month battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Wray will be 10:00 am Friday, July 8, 2022, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will be in St. Clement Cemetery in Bankston.

Wray was born December 29, 1956, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Wray F. and Joanne C. Elgin Childers. On September 27, 1980, he married Julie A. Nixon in Des Moines, IA.

He was a 1974 graduate of Hempstead High School and attended Iowa State University.

He was a professional land surveyor at Yaggy Colby Associates and then Childers Surveying, both in Mason City, IA, and retired from IIW Engineers & Surveying, in Dubuque, in 2015.

Wray was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church in Bankston. He loved his Saturday morning breakfast in the Bunk House with family and friends.  He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.  Wray enjoyed hunting, John Deere tractors, and NASCAR.  He also enjoyed being able to ride RAGBRAI several times.  He had a great love of farming and was very proud to be able to move back and live on his grandparents farm, Green Haven, which he farmed with his brother, Randy.  He also loved spending time with his grandkids lighting off fireworks and giving them golf cart rides.

Survivors include his wife, Julie; his children, Jennifer (Ryan) Soat of Asbury, IA, Robert Allen (Christa) Childers of Durango, IA, Emily (Eric) Martens of Dubuque, IA; his mother, Joanne C. (Neil) Childers of Dubuque, IA; four grandchildren, Caraline, Olivia, Elijah, and Josephine; one brother, Randy (Lori) Childers of Dubuque, IA; one sister, Donna (Jeff) Haun of Dubuque, IA; one brother-in-law, Frank (Yvonne) Nixon of Hammond, LA; one sister-in-law, Colleen Nixon of Des Moines, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, one sister, Connie Brehm, and one brother-in-law, John Nixon.

A memorial has been established for the Centralia-Peosta Fire Department.

Thomas B. Clayton

Thomas B. “Bones” Clayton, 63 of Mud Lake Rd, Dubuque, IA passed away on June 30th, 2022 at Dubuque Specialty Care.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road.

He was born on March 23, 1959, the son of Charles & Mary (Schick) Clayton. Stephen Hempstead High School. Prior to his illness, he worked for O’Reilly Auto Parts and a farm hand for Dennis Koltes Farms.

Tom was a hard worker, a soft-spoken man and a kind soul. He found his passion for many years as a Certified Mercury Marine mechanic at Arrowhead Marina at Mud Lake where he loved working with all of his boating customers.

He is survived by his siblings; Lisa (Jim) Petsche, Monona, IA, Denise (Clarence) Jesse, Paola, KS.

Becky (Cliff) Schmitt, Dubuque, IA, twin brother Tim (Peggy) Clayton, Dubuque, IA, Julie (Paul) Schueller, Durango, IA, Kevin (Cathy) Clayton, Mt. Hope, WI, and Connie (Rich) Freiburger, Sheboygan Falls, WI; his step-father Richard Keller, Bankston, IA, step-siblings: Rick (Sharon) Keller, Durango, IA, LuAnn Keller, Jeff (Jennifer) Keller and Lisa (Mike) Moore, all of Dubuque, IA

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Clayton 2007, his mother Mary (Schick) Keller 2020, and his grandparents.

Patricia L. Metcalf

Patricia Lyn Metcalf, 67, of Asbury, died Friday, July 1, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 11:00 am Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Patty will be 11:30 am Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Patty was born October 13, 1954, in Des Moines, the daughter of Charles J. and Idalou D. Kisor LeRette. In 1999, she married Dale M. Metcalf at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, IA.

She attended Eisenhower High School in Blue Island, IL and graduated from Fremd High School in Palatine, IL. She received her teaching certificate from William Penn University in Oskaloosa, IA.

She was a teacher at Eisenhower, Sageville, and Carver Elementary Schools for 35 years before retiring in 2010.

She attended Grandview United Methodist Church. In 1992, she began her calling of caring for 63 foster children until 2009, when she and Dale adopted #63 completing the family. She loved the color pink, her kitties, and poodles. She especially loved her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Dale; one daughter, Tiffany (Brian) Cue of Dubuque; two sons, Brent (Sarah) Phillips of Dubuque, and Robert Metcalf of Asbury; four grandchildren, Ethan, Samantha, Estella, and Brianna; and one sister, Susan Gunther of Asbury.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother-in-law, Stephen Gunther.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Dubuque County Humane Society.

The family thanks the Care Team at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for taking special care of Patty.

Adelaide M. Lechnir

Adelaide M. Lechnir, 87, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community.

Services will be 12:00 (Noon) on Monday, July 11, 2022, at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque.  Burial will be in the Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque

Family and friends may call from 9:00 – 11:45 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Adelaide was born on May 5, 1935, in Prairie Du Chein, WI, the daughter of Alva and Adella (Brown) DuCharme. She was a graduate of Prairie Du Chein High School, the class of 1953.  Adelaide was united in marriage to John “Jack” Lechnir in 1960.  He preceded her in death in January of 1997.

Jack and Adelaide operated the Swiss Inn in East Dubuque since 1983. She was a professional artist doing oil painting along with her sister, Janelle for Hruska-Kray Studios. She and Janelle loved to travel. Adelaide was also a die-hard Green Bay Packer fan.

Surviving are five children, Rick (Moni) Lechnir of Germany, Deb (Dave) VanOstrand and Dave (Barb) Lechnir both of East Dubuque, Scott (Suzanne) Lechnir of Colorado, and Jeff (Donna) Lechnir of Surprise, AZ; 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Alvin DuCharme of Sonul, CA, Lucille Walters of Prairie Du Chein and Marilyn Vance of Cincinatti, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alva and Adella, a grandson, Jason Wanke, and her siblings, Albert DuCharme, Lloyd DuCharme, and Janelle Westerfield.

Chloe M. Lucas

Chloe M. Lucas, 17, of Dubuque, Iowa gained her wings and was called home to eternal paradise with her best friend Kennedy Elskamp on July 1, 2022, the result of an automobile accident.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 5th, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a family wake service will be at 2:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 6th, 2022, at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church.   Private family burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Chloe was born on December 4, 2004, in Dubuque, Iowa the daughter of Lisa Renfrow-Lucas and Jon Lucas.

She attended Carver Elementary School, Washington Jr. High and was going to enter her senior year at Dubuque Senior High School. She enjoyed playing softball and was a member of the Senior High Cheerleading Squad.  She recently was in the Macy’s Day Parade in New York with the cheer squad.  She received her CNA certificate from Senior and wanted to move forward with a career as a neonatal nurse.

Chloe loved to dance, go on family vacations, be with her friends and Tik Tok, she enjoyed shopping and had a great fashion sense, she was sassy and classy. She enjoyed going to the gym with her friends and she could talk to anyone.

Chloe brought a smile to everyone’s face and had a contagious laugh; she will be dearly missed by so many who loved her.

She is survived by her parents Lisa Lucas and Jon (Tess) Lucas; her siblings Sean (Mary) Keller, Austin (Ali) Keller, Brianna (Richard Bartell) Lucas, Connor (Mia Hodgson) Lucas, Leah Scharpf, Kayden Lucas and Ethan Brown. Grandparents Mike and Sandy Lucas, Vayla Renfrow; step grandparents James and Charlie O’Meara and Robert and Cynthia Schlichting. Aunt and uncle Jenny Lucas and Jeff (Jessica Zeller) Lucas; along with many aunts uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends Kennedy, Cece, Clara, Abbie, and Greg.

She was preceded in death by her great grandparents Larry and Ruth Green, Mike and Cecilia Lucas, Ray Renfrow and Velma Renfrow.

In lieu of flowers a Chloe Lucas memorial fund will be established.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Charleston who was 1st on scene and called for help; also, to the Dubuque Fire and EMS, the Dubuque Police Dept and Sheriff Dept especially officer Hoffman, The Iowa State Patrol, and the Leonard Funeral Home Staff for all of their care, compassion and kindness during this tragic time.

 


 

Kennedy E. Elskamp

Kennedy Elizabeth Elskamp, 17, beloved and cherished daughter of Tony and Lisa Elskamp (Kot) and loving sister to Carter, gained her wings and was called home to eternal paradise with her best friend Chloe Lucas on July 1, 2022, the result of an automobile accident.

Visitation will be held on Thursday July 7, 2022, at St. Joseph Key West Church from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. where a wake service will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 8th at the Church of the Nativity with Rev. Rodney Allers officiating. Burial will follow St. Andrew Parish Cemetery, 101 Church St. in Tennyson, WI.

Kennedy was born on June 28, 2005, to proud parents Tony and Lisa Elskamp and joyful grandparents Kathy and Gary Elskamp and Darlene and John Kot.

She became a big sister in 2009 when her brother Carter was born.  Kennedy loved spending time with her family on vacation, camping, and had many special memories with her grandpa (Papa) Gary, who was waiting for her at the gates of Heaven.

Her other favorite activities included shopping for deals, going to country concerts, and being with friends.

She was deeply loved and had many special times with her aunts and uncles: Julie and Larry Bies, Andy and Kimberly Elskamp, and Thresia Elskamp, and cousins: Addison and Chase Bies, Elizabeth, Emma, and Drew Elskamp, and Becky and Adam Stroube. Her special friends Chloe, Cece, Clara, Abbie, and Greg.

Kennedy was beloved by her family, friends, and many classmates. She was bright, caring, and thoughtful and brought much joy to the lives of those who love her. For those who knew Kennedy, they knew the love she had for her mom. They were the best dynamic duo ever.

The family would like to thank the Dubuque Fire & EMS along with the Dubuque Police and Sheriff Dept. for all their care, kindness and compassion. They especially want to thank all their family, friends, neighbors and the community for the outpouring of support during such a difficult time.
