Delbert Manders

Delbert “Del” Manders, 90, of Dubuque, died Monday, August 1, 2022, at the Luther Manor in Dubuque.

A prayer service will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, August 11, 2022 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory followed by visitation until 7:00 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Del will be 10:00 am Friday, August 12, 2022, at Holy Spirit Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Steve Garner as the Celebrant.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Del was born July 22, 1932, in St. Catherines, IA, the son of Joseph and Christine Herbst Manders.  On May 18, 1957, he married Alice Rose Hannan at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rickardsville, IA.  She preceded him in death on June 3, 2003.

Del was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving during the Korean War from February 11, 1953 until February 10, 1956.

Coming from a larger family of 15, which struggled at times to put food on the table, those early years defined him.  Working until retirement at Frommelt Industries/Rite Hite.  He loved hunting squirrels to help feed his family, but his passion was for metal scrapping.  Soon he started returning from his weekend hunting trips with more scrap metal in his game bag than the game itself, spending more time rummaging through junk piles than hunting.  His reputation grew and he quickly became known as the person to give your junk to, stripping it apart and meticulously separating the metal by type and grade.  He would spend hours upon hours breaking down the junk for recycling.  Playing cards was another passion he had and getting together with family every month for an afternoon of snacks and card games.  In Del fashion of not wanting to waste anything, he would play solitaire with the same deck of cards until he wore the ink off of them, even though he had about 50 new decks of cards that had been given to him over the years.  He also enjoyed watching John Wayne movies.  Over the years, Del traveled, he was very proud of the grill he made and the many steak fries it was used for.  Del cherished time spent with his family.

Survivors include his children, Joan (Dan) Fawcett of Forman, ND; Vickie (Steve) Connolly of Dubuque; Cathy Manders of Dubuque; Mike (Kathy) Manders of Laurel, MT; Mark (Julie) Manders of Granger, IA; Tim Manders of Farley, IA; Jill (Mike) McClanahan of Dubuque; Carla Manders of Dubuque; 26 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; siblings, Vince Manders, Arlene Kohn, Darlene Klosterman, Luella (Paul) Lueken, Mary Jane Burcham, and Margie (Pat) Stegar; sisters-in-law, Marie Manders, Dorothy (Melvin) Brecht, Carol Hannan, and Norma Perry; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by seven siblings, Lester (Doris) Manders, Sylvester (Rosemary) Manders, Jerry (Kay) Manders, Norman (Rosie) Manders, Harold (Diane) Manders, George (Joyce) Manders, and Shirley (Jim) Theisen; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim Kohn, Carl Klosterman, Mary Manders, John (Deloras) Hannan, Bud Hannan, Dick Hannan, Gene Hannan, Bill Hannan, and Kay (Leon) Link.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Tom and Laurie and Tom and Sara for their love and support over the years.

Eugene J. Foust

Euguene J. Foust, Sr. 93, of Zwingle, our beloved Dad, father-in-law, and Papa, completed his earthly journey Thursday, August 4th, 2022 at Bethany Home in Dubuque.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 8th, 2022, at St. Joseph Key West Church with Msgr. Thomas Toale Officiating. Burial will be in Assumption Catholic Church Cemetery, Sylvia Switch. Visitation to honor Gene’s life will be from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7th, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a prayer service will be held at 4:45 p.m. by Deacon John Stierman.

Gene was born August 14, 1928, in rural Zwingle, seventh of Henrietta (Pancratz) and Rudolph Foust’s eight children. He attended Buncombe School, graduating at 8th grade.

Gene met Geri Dunne, the love of his life, in the blackberry patch on the Dunne family farm in Andrew, IA. Gene and Geri married August 14, 1950, at St. John’s Church in Andrew.  They celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2000.  Geri died November 23, 2009.

Shortly after they married, the Army sent Gene to Germany during the Korean War. After returning from the service, Gene and Geri were lifelong Dubuque County residents.  Gene was a dairy, hog, and beef farmer; he was also an Occo and Yoder feed sales representative.  He was a self-starter who believed in an honest day’s work.

Gene appreciated the importance of family and friendships. Gene and Geri enjoyed gardening, fishing vacations in MN and WI, and dancing at Melody Mills. Gene also enjoyed playing Euchre and poker with his in-laws. He could always bring a smile to the face of anyone lucky enough to spend a little time with him. His friendly spirit and hearty laugh will always be remembered.

Those left behind to cherish memories of Gene include sons Euguene Jr.(aka: Jim, Gene) (wife Sharon Collins-Bradley), Gary (Colleen), Duane (Brenda); daughters Dina (Dan) Seifert, and Tressa (Martin) Manders; grandsons Sean (Shelly), Thad, and Jamin (Emilie) Foust; Kyle (Nicole) and Kristin Manders; granddaughters Dr. Desirae (Wayne) Wheatcraft, Cassandra (Justin) Birdd, Lindsay (Matthew) Johnson, Trisha (Dan) Petersen, and Bethany (Tyson) Steel; and step-grandchildren Brian (Kim), Mark (Kerry) and Jeff (Rachel) Bradley.  Gene is also survived by in-laws Mary Foust and Marie (Bob) Dierks, former daughter-in-law Ann Foust, & former grand-daughter-in-law Brenda Willenbring Foust.; great grand-daughters Madeline (Travis Galle), Isabella, Willa, and Avila Foust, Camiel Manders, Hailey Petersen, Alexandria Johnson, Ava, Ella, Jaylyn, and Charlotte Bradley, Abrianna Marr, Kayla and Jessalyn Birdd; great grand-sons Verrick, Ellison, and Henning Foust, Gabe and Mitch Manders, Landon and Malachi Petersen, Isaiah Johnson, AJ, Austin (Autumn), Kyle and Jordan Bradley; and great-great-grandchildren Riley Jo Lamey, Ava Marr, Jaxon and Weslon Birdd; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Euguene was preceded in death by his wife Geri, their son Calvin, Gene’s parents, father- and mother-in-law James & Catherine Dunne; sisters Emily (Howard) Herron, Janet (Al) Kemp, Joan (Leo) Arensdorf; brothers Martin (in infancy), John (Florence, Gen), Quinten (Jean), and Carlos Foust; brothers-in-law Martin (Marie) and Bill (Phyllis) Dunne; and very special friend Cecilia Gavin.

Gene’s family greatly appreciate and give thanks for Bethany Home staff and Hospice of Dubuque for their compassionate care of Gene. Their sincere gentleness and kind hearts truly made a difference, which we will never forget.

Robert F. Hall

Robert F. Hall, 83 of Galena, IL passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at UnityPoint St. Luke’s Hospital Cedar Rapids, IA. A funeral service will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM, Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at Furlong Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.

He was born November 11, 1938, in Elizabeth, IL the son of Leonard and Ethel (Hughes) Hall. Bob was a graduate of Galena High School with the class of 1956. He went on to attend UW Platteville and Chicago Technical College studying Architecture and Construction. He served in the US Naval Reserve based out of Great Lakes Naval Base. Bob was united in marriage to Carol J Schultz on February 14, 1958, at the Galena United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on September 21, 2013.

Bob was a self-employed contractor for many years, before going to work with Kraemer Brothers Construction. He also served as a part time deputy with the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department. After retiring, Bob became active in the Illinois wine industry as a grower, producing fruit for award winning wines and as a board member for the regional and state wine councils. Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping. He was a member of the Moose Club and Galena Jaycees.

Bob is survived by his children, Cathy (Dan) Wienen, Dan and Lisa (Kern) Hall, and Russ and Sue (Hayes) Hall, three grandchildren, Anna (Wienen) and Jay Williams, Brian and Megan (Goodwin) Wienen, Hunter Hall and friend Kennedy Salow, three great-grandchildren, Trevor Williams, Bailey Williams, and Penelope Wienen, sister and brother in-law, JoAnne (Hall) and Melvin Huttenlocher, three nieces, Luanne (Rick) Ferguson, Linda (Paul) Connor and Mary Hesselbacher.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Midwest Medical Center and Unity Point – St. Luke’s for their compassionate care.

Ronald D. Fangman

Ronald D. Fangman, 76, of Waterloo formerly of Dyersville passed away Monday, August 1, 2022, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 pm Monday, August, 8, 2022, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville. Visitation will continue Tuesday from 9 – 10 at the funeral home prior to funeral services.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville.  Rev. Gabriel Mensah will officiate, with burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ronald was born July 8, 1946 in Dyersville, Iowa the son of Hubert “Hub” and Mildred (Steger) Fangman.  Ron married the love of his life Sandy Ewing on June 7, 1969.  Ron worked at the family business Hub’s Motor Service until their closing and then continued a career in small engine work until his retirement in 2011.  Ron’s greatest joy was spending time with his kids and granddaughters.  He was a simple man and always had a smile on his face.

Survivors include his children Ronnie (Jin Tassler) Fangman of Colorado Springs, CO and Rhonda (Kerry Elliott) Fangman of Waterloo, two granddaughters, Moon Fangman of Ewa Beach, HI, Sydney Fangman of Waterloo, brothers, Gib (Carolyn) Fangman of Earlville and Vern (Geri) Fangman of Dyersville.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sandy, and his brother Melvin Fangman.

Ronald R. Scheffert

Ronald R. Scheffert, 86, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away Thursday July 28, 2022 at home surrounded by his family fighting a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dubuque, with Rev. Matt Agee officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 12th at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, and from 9:15 – 9:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

Ron was born on January 13th, 1936 in Dubuque, one of eight children of Arthur and Mabel (Duccini) Scheffert.  Ron married the love of his life, Suzanne Tschiggfrie on August 18th, 1956 at St John’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque. He started work at the Dubuque Packing Company when he was 16, served his country on the USS Ticonderoga in the Navy from 1954-1962, returning to The Pack until he retired in 1982. He also proudly completed and obtained his GED while working and raising his family with Sue.

Because of their love of the Florida sunshine, Ron and Sue moved to Florida. Ron started a successful business, Ron’s Finish Carpentry, handing it off to his dear friend and employee, Mike Williams.  Ron loved his golf; watching, playing or hitting balls on the range, but especially loved his time volunteering at Arnold Palmer’s PGA Tournament, the Bay Hill Classic where his favorite duty was running the SHOTLINK tracker on the 15th fairway. He volunteered many years until moving back to Dubuque in 2017. Ron loved listening to all kinds of music, playing his keyboard, Sunday concerts at the Arboretum, and his ice cream cone. Ron also loved his Friday night Happy Hour, a tradition that started when they lived in Florida as a way to relax, have a drink, and catch up with any or all of his daughters by phone that could participate.

Ron and Sue shared so many wonderful adventures together.  Camping, sailing a catamaran, traveling in their motor home, and building several of their own homes in East Dubuque, Florida, and a vacation home in Minnesota, just to name a few. But nothing lit up Ron’s face with joy more than ballroom dancing with his beautiful wife Sue!

Ron was a member of St Peter Lutheran Church in Dubuque, the East Dubuque Lions Club and the Elks Club.

Those left behind to cherish Ron include his wife of 66 years, Sue; 4 daughters: Rhonda Scheffert of Dubuque, Dawn (Jim) Jackson of East Dubuque, Amy Risavy of Tampa, Fl, and Beth Mohr (Joe Ryan) of East Dubuque; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; and sister Joan Hanson of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Mabel, sisters Delores and Peggy and brothers Clarence, Melvin, Donald (Billy), and Wayne; and his father and mother in law Joseph and Maye Tschiggfrie.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jessica for all of the loving care and support given to our father in his final days. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to Hospice of Dubuque.

Robert M. Miller

Robert M. “Bob” Miller, 92, of rural Hazel Green, WI, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community in Galena.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Sinsinawa, with Fr. Peter Auer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of American Legion Post # 787 of East Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 8:45 – 10:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church. The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque is serving the family.

Bob was born on December 31, 1929, in Menominee Twp. of Jo Daviess County, IL, the son of Albert and Arletta (Banfield) Miller.  He was united in marriage to Patricia “Pat” Green on November 12, 1955, at St. Mary’s Church, Cascade, IA. She preceded him in death on September 26, 2009.

“Bob’s life passion was farming and being on a tractor. Bob was a member of many card clubs with the love of his life Pat. He especially loved a good game of Euchre.” He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Bob was a member of American Legion Post # 787 of East Dubuque, and St. Joseph Parish, Sinsinawa.

Surviving are five children, Shirley (Jim) O’Brien of East Dubuque, Tom (Shelly) Miller of Hazel Green, Bob (Ellen) Miller of Menominee, Roger “Scrub” Miller and Peggy (Tony) Banfield both of Hazel Green; 13 grandchildren, Danny, Glen, Amber, Kyle, Drew, Beth, Amy, Zach, Katie, Cory, Jamie, Jacob and Jordan and 6- great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Arletta, his wife Pat, a daughter, Audrey Brandt, and siblings, Helen Kowalski and Dick Miller.

Bob’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community and Hospice of Dubuque for the excellent care provided to their father and grandfather.

Russell D. Gruenwald

Russell D. Gruenwald, 73, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022, at Crestridge Care Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Russell was born to Lyle and Lois (Taylor) Gruenwald in Maquoketa on October 22, 1948. He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1966.  He attended Technical school obtaining a degree as a Certified Engineer Draftsman.

He started his civil service career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Rock Island Arsenal in 1967.  He served two years in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971, doing the same work for the military as he had been doing for the Corps of Engineers.

After his military service he then returned to the Corps to continue his work as a Civil Engineering Technician until retirement in 2004.

One thing he will be remembered for is being on the cover of Rose Frantzen’s “Portrait of Maquoketa” book.

Survivors include a brother Gary Gruenwald (Adri) of Venice, Italy, and a sister Alice J. Daurelle (Tom) of Maquoketa.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will have a graveside service at a later date.

In honor of his love of nature and animals, memorials can be made to the Jackson County Humane Society.  A special thanks to the staff at Crestridge Care Center and Hospice of Jackson County for their wonderful and loving care.

Paul R. Conlon

Paul R. Conlon, age 69, of Dubuque, passed away unexpectedly at 10:50 a.m., on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.  In keeping with Paul’s wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Paul was born on November 21, 1952, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Merlin and Natalie (Gollobitz) Conlon.

When Paul was young his family moved to Minneapolis.  After graduating high school he returned to Dubuque and went to work at Key City Plating Company where he remained for 49 years, retiring as Plant Manager in 2020.  Moving back to Dubuque was a great decision for Paul not only professionally but also personally, as this is where he met his future wife.  He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marsha Stierman, on November 29, 1974, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque.  They have 2 wonderful sons, 3 adored grandchildren, and have been blessed with 47 years together.  Paul’s hobbies were many. He was a founding member of the Dubuque RC Speedway where racing remote control cars became a family night event.  The garden railway layout in his backyard brought other enthusiasts to “train night” on Tuesdays.  Paul’s love of the river progressed through various boats and finally to a houseboat that saw many trips to Waupeton Beach. Paul liked his muscle cars, motorcycles, and lately,  his electric bicycle.  Paul also loved scuba diving, even under the ice in Minnesota which was only done by advanced divers, while working for Jack the Frogman in Minneapolis.  He was extremely loyal to all of his family and loved spending time with them, always making sure everyone was well taken care of.  Paul also had a special place in his heart for all of his dogs throughout the years.  We are heartbroken at losing Paul in our daily lives.  He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

Timothy L. Pothoff

Timothy L. “Timmy” Pothoff 41, of St Petersburg, Florida formerly of Dubuque passed away unexpectedly at St Anthony’s Hospital in Florida on July 24th, 2022. Timmy’s life ended too soon; however, he was able to give the gift of life to four individuals by donating his heart, lungs, kidneys and liver.

To celebrate Timmy’s life, please join the family on Friday August 12, 2022, at Happy’s Place, 2323 Rockdale Road from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.

Timmy’s life experience began on January 13, 1981, in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Ronald and Betty (Schmitz) Pothoff. He graduated from Hempstead High School in 1999 and from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida with a degree in Digital Media and Entertainment.

Tim was the light in a dark world; he loved to experience joy and spread it to whomever he could. He was compassionate, kind, and had so much love to give. He loved to have hour long deep conversations, with anyone willing to listen. He had a love for traveling, and from that he has gained friends all over the world. If you got to know Timmy, you got to love Timmy and there was no in-between.

With Timmy’s experiences in life came the best of stories. The type of stories your stomach would hurt from laughing so hard. Timmy started to establish more grounded roots when he purchased his home in St. Pete. He would spread his love and laughter amongst the community with his standup comedy gigs, and his Uber stories. Timmy was Intelligent beyond recognition, creative, kind, and funny. Timmy was passionate about alternative health, and lived his true most authentic life, and often was misunderstood.

“Fear of judgement is a prison that causes you to live a phony life.”

Those left to honor Timmy’s life include his parents Ron and Betty Pothoff; his siblings Lori (Bill) Metcalf, Jeff Meyer, Kristi Trowbridge, Angela (Ken) Halm, and Michael (Tanya) Pothoff. Nieces and nephews Michael, Shuree (Brian), Tyler (Samantha), Rachel, Ethan, Maddie, Mykenah, and Rylee; his aunts, uncles, close friends and his two cats Betelguise and Ashtar.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a niece Maria.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Tim’s name may be directed to the Dubuque Humane Society.

Brenda M. Bloesch

Brenda Mary Bloesch, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, August 1, at Luther Manor in Dubuque, Iowa.

Brenda was born in London, England on February 19, 1933 to Colin and Mary Jackson.  Her father was a chemist and her mother a physicist. She grew up during the London Blitz of 1940-41.

In the summer of 1958, Brenda met Donald Bloesch in a Salvation Army hotel in Geneva, Switzerland. Donald was there doing postdoctoral research in religious communities (having completed a PhD in theology at the University of Chicago), and Brenda was finishing her doctoral thesis in French literature at the University of London. Their friendship flourished and deepened. When Brenda completed her thesis (a critical edition of one of Voltaire’s works), she emigrated to the U.S., and Brenda and Donald were married on November 23, 1962 in Chicago.

Brenda joined Donald in Dubuque, Iowa, where Donald was a professor of systematic theology at the University of Dubuque Seminary. Donald was a prolific writer as well as a popular professor, and for 48 years they were a wonderful team. Brenda combined her resourcefulness and considerable research and bibliographic skills to assist Donald in the preparation of his books. As members of the seminary community, their warm hospitality was appreciated by faculty and students alike.

Brenda loved gardening, taking brisk walks, reading mystery books, and watching old movies. But her greatest joy was interacting with people. Brenda was very dear to everyone who knew her, and she treasured her many friendships.

Brenda had a deep faith and was a beautiful witness of God’s love. She was very generous and cared about the needs of others. She maintained her curiosity, love of conversation, and sharp wit to the very end.

Brenda had no children, but she was very close to her two nephews, David and Peter, and lavished them with the same love and attention that a mother would give. She loved being acknowledged on Mother’s Day and being asked for motherly advice.

Brenda will be deeply missed by her brother-in-law and his wife, Richard and Ethel Bloesch; nephews David and Peter Bloesch; and grandnephew, Philip, all of Iowa City.

Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother and his wife.

A memorial service will be held later, to be followed by burial in St. Paul’s UCC cemetery in Monee, Illinois. Michael J. “Mike” Dillon, 81, of Dubuque, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the Home of the Hawkeyes, surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 8, 2022, at the Church of the Resurrection. Please visit www.egelhoefsiegertcasper.com to view the livestream. Michael was born on December 10, 1940, in Dubuque, the son of Larry and Ann (Norton) Dillon. He graduated from Loras Academy in 1959. In 1985 he married the love of his life, Donna Dillon.

Before beginning his lifelong career at John Deere, Mike worked three jobs to support his family. After 42.5 years of employment Mike retired from John Deere as Supervisor. After retirement he transported cars for Runde Chevrolet.

Mike was blessed with high degree of athleticism. In 1988 he was inducted into the softball hall of fame. He played for many teams in his 15-year career as an all- around player. He reached his peak with Dubuque Ready- Mix as an outfielder who compiled a near .300 career batting average. In addition to softball, Mike had a passion for golf, tennis, and biking. He proudly participated in Ragbri for 7 years.

When Mike wasn’t playing sports, he was watching them. He enjoyed cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, and the Dubuque Wahlert Golden Eagles.

Mike and Donna delighted in spending winters in Florida, going on cruises and traveling. His most memorable vacation was his trip to Ireland.

Mike had a sense of humor that was unmatched. His hobbies included collecting golf balls and making his friends and family laugh. He lived his life to the fullest!

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Donna; children, Sara (Matt) Burke, Steve (Lynn) Schmitt, both of Dubuque, Eric (Megan) Schmitt of Platteville, Wis., Amy (Charles) Rutherford, of Washington, Ann (Doug) Wade, Debbie (Rafael) Gonzalez, Mike “Deets” Dillon, Dan Dillon, all of Florida, and David (Cathy) Dillon, of Dubuque; he was Papa, Pops, and Popsi to 18 grandchildren, Emily, Grace, Brody, Mason, Eli, Easton, Genevieve, Tyler, Nicole, Dillon, Casey, Danielle, Melissa, Derrick, Zach, Cory, Samantha, and Ryne; 19 great- grandchildren, with one on the way; siblings, Kaye Edwards, Pat (Karen) Dillon, Tom (Sue) Dillon, Jim (Lois) Dillon, Joe (Sue) Dillon and Jerry Dillon; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law,  Linda (Tom) Klein, Lora (Joe) Spahn, Lisa (Kent) Chapman, Lana (Gary) Norton, Robert (Patti) Bauer, Lois (Al) Lumley and Julie Bauer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Peggy Dillon; sisters-in-law, Barb Weidenbacher, Connie Dillon and Chris Bauer; brothers-in-law, Dennis “Harry” Bauer, Richard Bauer, Dean Edwards; and his special aunt, Shirley (Annie) Melloy.

A Michael J. Dillon Memorial Fund has been established.

Richard D. Devaney

Richard D. “Dick” Devaney Sr., 95, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at the Hawkeye Care Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:45 am Saturday, August 6, 2022 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. In Dick’s honor, the family requests bright colored casual dress.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Dick will be 11:00 am Saturday, August 6, 2022, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Dennis Quint as the Celebrant.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Dick was born September 6, 1926, in LeMars, IA, the son of Francis and Kathryn Martensen Devaney. On September 3, 1946, he married Patricia Manahl at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dubuque. She died March 12, 2012.

He graduated from Loras Academy in 1944. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Philippines on the U.S.S. Day. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946.

Dick was self-employed at Brookside Dairy, Sanitary Dairy, and Land of Lakes Dairy for over 25 years. He later worked in security at John Deere Dubuque Works, retiring in 1989.

As a former member of St. Mary’s Church, he served as usher, Eucharistic minister, a parish council member, an active member of the Holy Name Society, and a bingo worker. He was a union member for 42 years. He belonged to F.E. Union, Teamsters Local 421, United Plant Guard Workers, Teamsters Retirees 421, and UAW Retirees 94. In 1990 and 1992, he received the Governor’s Volunteer Award. He volunteered at Project Concern, Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, and for many other places. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He loved playing Euchre, and enjoyed bowling and dancing.

Survivors include his five children, Sharon (Dave) McLaughlin of Dubuque, Rick Devaney of Temple, TX, Connie Seiler of Fort Collins, CO, Julie (Mike) Neyens of Dubuque, and Terry (Marla) Devaney of Davenport, IA; one half-sister, Mary Lou Bierman of NE; 15 grandchildren, Kelly (Tim) Edwards, Tracy (Mike) Schaul, Shannon Perlin, Richard (Julie) Devaney III, Scott (Aubrey) Devaney, Jody (Scott) Harris, Jeff (Payton) Schneider, Lisa (Keith) Edward, Lora (Jerry) Carter, Tara Devaney, Jacob Devaney, Holly Capuano, Justin Devaney, Katie (John) Larson, and Mark (Nicole Langmaid) Neyens; 34 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, Pat, he was preceded in death by one son, Tom Devaney, one grandson, Jeff McLaughlin, one sister, Kathleen Schmidt, and one half brother, Frank Devaney.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Kirkendall and his nurse, Kate for their great care and concern, the caring staff at Hawkeye Care Facility,  Hospice of Dubuque, and Fr. Quint and Sr. Sharon for their comfort and prayers.

Hartmuth Schaefer

Hartmuth “Hardy” Schaefer, 74, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away at his home on Friday, July 29, 2022, surrounded by family.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating Hardy’s life will be held from 4 to 6 P.M., Friday, August 5, 2022, in “The Bistro” at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa with a word of prayer at 5:00.  Cremation rites have been accorded.

Hartmuth E. Schaefer was born on August 5, 1947, in Gladenbach, Germany, to Berthold and Ann (Pliess) Schaefer.  He married Patricia (Pat) Ryan on August 29, 1970, in Chicago, IL.  To this union 3 children, Ron, Terry and Cyndi.

Hardy worked and retired from ITW as a tool and die maker. Hardy lived in Chicago and Palantine, IL for many years until moving to Maquoketa. He loved traveling and collecting coins.  He and Pat were huge Jimmy Buffet fans.  He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, IA.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Ron (Chris) Schaefer of Maquoketa, IA, Terry Schaefer and Cyndi (Mike) Czajka; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Udo Schaefer. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Patricia Schaefer in 2014.

Rev. John C. Paisley

Reverend John C. Paisley “Father Jack”, 86, of Dubuque, died Sunday, July 31, 2022, at his home.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 6:45 pm Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Church of the Resurrection followed by a prayer service at 6:45 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Father Paisley will be 10:30 am Thursday, August 4, 2022, at Church of the Resurrection celebrated by Archbishop Michael Jackels and priests of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Dubuque.

Father Jack was born December 7, 1935, in Dubuque, IA, the son of George William and Bernice Marie Shuhert Paisley.

He attended grade school at St. Patrick’s in Dubuque then went on to Loras Academy, graduating in 1953. He graduated from Loras College in 1957 and completed his theological studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Conception, MO, where he graduated in 1962.

Just celebrating his 60th anniversary, Father Jack was ordained a priest on June 2, 1962 at St. Rose Priory in Dubuque by Archbishop James J. Byrne.

Father Jack’s parish assignments took him all over the Archdiocese of Dubuque. His early assignments included serving as associate pastor of Saint Ludmila’s in Cedar Rapids (1962-67),  Holy Ghost in Dubuque (1967-69), St. Martin’s in Cascade (1969-70), St. Joseph the Worker in Dubuque (1970-73), St. Joseph’s in Bellevue (1973-76), and St. Joseph’s in New Hampton (1976-80). In addition he was a member of the LaSalle High School faculty, Cedar Rapids (1962-67), Wahlert High School faculty, Dubuque (1967-1969; 1970-73), St. Martin faculty, Cascade (1969-70), Marquette High School faculty, Bellevue (1973-76), and the St. John School of Religion faculty, New Hampton (1976-80). Later assignments included pastor of Immaculate Conception in North Washington and director of St. John School of Religion in New Hampton (1980-84), pastor of St. Bernard’s in Alta Vista (1982-84), associate pastor of St. Benedict’s in Decorah (1984-86) and then pastor there (1986-90), pastor of St. Francis of Assisi in Fayette and St. Francis Xavier in Hawkeye (1990-92), St. Michael’s in Belle Plaine (1992-95), and St. Joseph’s in Chelsea (1994-95), interim pastor  at St. Joseph’s in Mason City (1995) and St. Edward’s in Waterloo (1996), pastor of St. Francis Xavier in Belmond (1996-99), and pastor of the parishes in Hazleton, Lamont, and Strawberry Point from 1999 until his retirement in 2005. After retirement, he served as chaplain at Clark University and continued to assist the parishes of the diocese.

He was a member of National Association of Priest Pilots and volunteered on many service trips. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid skier.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Catherine (Lawrence) Nielsen of DePere, WI, and Margaret Ann “Peggy” (Donald) Thiltgen, DeWitt, IA; two brothers, Thomas William (Francine) Paisley and Ronald Joseph (Jane) Paisley, both of Dubuque; many wonderful nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews who loved him dearly; and long-time friend, Sister Pat McNamara.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-law, Leon Mathieu.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Father Jack’s favorite local charities.

Martha M. Wlochal

Martha M. Wlochal, age 72, of Dubuque, passed away at 6:50 p.m., on Monday, August 1, 2022, at MercyOne Dubuque.  To celebrate Martha’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m., on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1755 Delhi Street.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, with Jeff Durham officiating.  Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Martha was born on September 14, 1949, in Milwaukee, WI, daughter of Herbert and Myrtle (Schultz) Wlochal.

Martha was employed with Pepsi Cola in Dubuque for several years.  She was a faith filled woman and devoted member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.  In her free time, Martha enjoyed getting together with friends and family to play cards and every board game imaginable.  Martha loved her family and especially looked forward to spending time with her nieces and nephews.  She also enjoyed going shopping and was always on the look out for her next outfit.  Martha will be greatly missed.
