Eileen Cullen Akeson Dunphy

Eileen “Tweetie” Cullen Akeson Dunphy, 102, of Assisi Village, formerly of Sunnyview Dr., Dubuque and long-time resident of East Dubuque, IL, died Monday, March 8, 2021, surrounded by family.

Eileen experienced a number of firsts in her life. She was born in East Dubuque, IL on June 7, 1918, the first of three daughters to Raymond J. and Mary E. (Rosemeyer) Cullen. She was in the first First Grade Class at St. Mary’s, East Dubuque, when it opened in 1924, graduated from St. Joseph Academy, Dubuque, in 1936 and later from Bayless Business College. She was employed for more than 25 years at the former State Bank of East Dubuque and was its first woman officer. Eileen was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in East Dubuque for 62 years and served on its first parish council.

On May 20, 1944, she married William N. (Bill) Akeson at St. Mary’s and became a full-time housewife and mother of their two sons and one daughter. After Bill’s death on December 13, 1963, Eileen returned to work at the State Bank of East Dubuque and retired December 1980. Eileen married former City of Dubuque Fire Chief Robert N. Dunphy at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Melleray on January 3, 1981 and moved to Dubuque at that time. Bob died February 7, 1999.

Eileen was a member of St. Anthony Parish and St. Bernadette’s Circle of its Rosary Society, St. Veronica’s Circle of the Catholic Mother’s Study Clubs, Court Dubuque No. 1287 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the Dubuque Chapter of the BVM Alumnae. She was a “people person” –  ever mindful of the feelings and the needs of others and always making new friends. She also appreciated the beauties of nature – sunsets, butterflies, flowers and snowflakes. She was a prolific writer of letters and poetry, and wrote treasured biographies of herself and close family members. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles in ink, traveling and playing Bridge. Family gatherings were a special joy.

Surviving are her three children, Richard “Rick” Akeson, Germantown, WI, Allan Akeson, Oro Valley, AZ, and Diane (Roy) Salmela, Glendale, WI; step-daughters, Maureen (Al) Frommelt, Dubuque and Marlys Dunphy, Iowa City; grandchildren, Fred (Karen) Akeson, Courtney (Matt) Lowe, Brian (Larena) Akeson, Patrick (Betsy) Akeson, Evan (Kate) Salmela and John Salmela; step-grandchildren, Stephen (Julie) Frommelt, Greg (Dawn) Frommelt, Nicole (Garth) Gibson and Brenda Salmela Malcolm; twelve great grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Eileen is also survived by nieces, nephews and very special friends, David and Patricia Cosley and Patti Peters of Dubuque.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her sisters Adrienne Lagen and Marguerite Hutchins, daughter-in-law Marianne Akeson, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Dr. Mansfield Lagen, Dale Hutchins, Ruth and Julian Akeson, Dorothy and Vincent Benda, and step-grandson Erik Salmela.

Eileen’s family wishes to give thanks to the caring staff and residents of Assisi Village who made her home there such a happy one; and Hospice of Dubuque for their special care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Stonehill Franciscan Services, Salvation Army or Hospice of Dubuque.

Milton K. Obermann

Milton K. Obermann, 87, of Bellevue, passed away on Monday, March 8, 2021 at Mill Valley Care Center. Private Family Funeral Mass will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, March 11, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue. Burial will be in Andrew Cemetery in Andrew. Funeral Mass will be live streamed on the St. Joseph Bellevue – Sts. Peter & Paul Springbrook Facebook page, on their You Tube Channel and on Bellevue Cable TV Channel 37.

Milton Obermann was born February 7, 1934 in Andrew, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Hattie (Sisler) Obermann. He was an only child. Milton grew up in Andrew and graduated from Andrew High School in 1951. Although he grew up in Andrew, he spent much of his childhood on his grandparents’ farm five miles northeast of Andrew. After graduating from high school, Milton eventually made his way to Loras College where he majored in education. Milton taught science and math classes for a few years before moving his young family to the family farm, where he farmed for over 60 years.

Milton married Roberta Cain in 1958, and they raised seven children on their family farm. Roberta passed away on March 1, 2016. Milton mostly raised cattle and harvested hay on the farm. His fondest memories were spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren on the farm. Milton was also an avid coon hunter much of his life and had many coonhounds over the years. He especially loved trout fishing in Brush Creek, as well. Milton has 12 grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter and another on the way.

Survivors include his children and families, Theresa (Tim) Hoffman and granddaughter Megan; Jim (Deb) and grandson Ben and granddaughter Lauren; Mary (Dan) Johnson and grandsons Nathaniel & Gabe and granddaughter Claire; Elmer Obermann; Joe (Rebecca) Obermann and granddaughter Kelsey and grandsons Tyler, Matthew, and Jack; Christina (Brian) Berthel and grandson Ryan and granddaughter Sarah; and Milton Obermann.

Milton was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Roberta.

Danny Moon

Danny Moon, 78, of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, entered into eternal life on Saturday, March 6, 2021.

Visitation to be held at Krause Funeral Home 21600 W. Capitol Dr. Brookfield, WI. on Thursday, March 11, 2021 from 4:00-6:00PM. Celebration of life at 6:15PM.

Danny was a dedicated employee for 41 years at Briggs and Stratton.

Gary M. Warren

Gary M. Warren, 47, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2021, from injuries received in an automobile accident on Highway 61 near the Long Grove, Iowa exit.

A Celebration of Gary’s Life life will be held from 3 to 5 P.M. on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Rivergront Grille, 4619 34th Street, Rock Island, Illinois 61201. Cremation rites have been accorded and burial will be at Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois.

Gary Michael Warren was born on April 2, 1973 in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Clinton Edward James and JoAnn (Test) Warren. He was a 1991 graduate of Rock Island High School where he struggled to find himself. After finding his passion he attended the University of Illinois, graduating in 2004 with a bachelor’s and masters degree in Engineering. He married Beth Ann French on August 8, 1998 in Rock Island, Illinois. After five wonderful children and many happy years they divorced. On November 17, 2019 he married Aisha Lyanga whom he met in Nairobi, Kenya.

Gary put his engineering degree into practice working for engineering companies in Texas with the last being Baker Hughes Company in Houston, Texas. While working his way up the company ladder he took a position that afforded him the opportunity to work throughout Africa for the last seven years.

Gary enjoyed spending time with his family, working on cars, houses, swimming, and playing soccer. Often times flitting from one activity to the other with unbound energy.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Aisha Lyanga Warren; children Grace Warren of Houston, TX, Caleb Warren, Aaron Warren, and Levi Warren of Maquoketa, IA; step-son Mahadi Lyanga; grandchild, Noah Warren of Maquoketa, IA; his parents, Clinton and JoAnn Warren of FL; a brother, Scott (Jen) Warren of Maquoketa, IA; and a sister, Kimberly (Jerred Harvey) Warren of Island Lake, IL.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, a brother James Warren, and a daughter Hannah Rose Warren.

Lawrence J. Rosenthal

Lawrence J. Rosenthal “Larry” age 82, of Dubuque, IA formerly of Galena, IL passed away Thursday March 4th, 2021.

Larry was born in Galena, IL on January 22nd, 1939 to John and Mable Rosenthal.  He was a graduate of Galena High School in 1957.  On March 16th, 1995 Larry married Kathryn Graves at the Galena Court House.

Larry served in the Air Force from August 7th, 1958 to June 6th, 1962 as an Air Policeman.  Not long after being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Larry began a 27 year career in law enforcement.  Larry served as a Police Officer in the Jo Daviess Sheriff’s Department, Village of Arlington Heights IL, Evanston IL and the Cook County Sheriff’s Department.

Larry was a long-standing member of the American Legion and an avid Bears, Cubs and Bulls fan.  He enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia and coins.  Larry was a loving husband, father and grandfather and always willing to help anyone in need.

Preceded in death by his parents John and Mable Rosenthal and five brothers and four sisters: John, Bob, Bill, Ben, Chuck, Hank, Pauly, Virginia and Peggy.

He is survived by his wife Kathryn Rosenthal and children Robert (Courtney) Rosenthal, Tiphany (Aaron) Bonnette, Julie (Nick) Fracasso, Tyson (Trang) Jeppesen, James (Debi) Loarie, Richard (Maria) Loarie along with ten grandchildren.

Francis C. Oglesby

Francis C. “Frank” Oglesby, age 78, of Dubuque, Iowa, completed his earthly journey on March 5, 2021, at home, surrounded by his loving family.  To honor  Frank’s life, a private family service is being held.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Frank’s family.

Frank was born on July 3, 1942, in Dubuque, Iowa, a son to Clarence and Catherine (Huber) Oglesby.  Frank spent his entire life, other than a few years in England where he honorably served his country with the U.S. Air Force, right here in God’s country, joyfully surrounded by family and friends the entire time.  He made countless friends along the way while working at Caradco, Sullivan’s, the Dubuque Pack, and most recently at the Q Casino.  In his free-time, Frank always enjoying sitting around the card table whenever possible, but his real passion was found in his amazing fish tanks at home.  Always in search of the next rare addition to his collection, while also paying meticulous attention to the display, set-up, and care of the fish as they floated peacefully behind the glass.  Only the Packer’s on tv could pull his gazing eyes away from the serenity he found in them.  Frank was also well known for his quick wit and contagious sense of humor which will thankfully continue to bring smiles to the faces of all who were blessed to be within his inner circle as the memories of moments gone by will gradually resurface over time.  His positive outlook on life also made Frank a rare breed.  The challenges daily life can bring were never a struggle to be feared, but rather an opportunity to embrace the bigger picture and understand that temporary is ultimately the state of everything we see here.  We will miss Frank more than he could ever imagine, but also find some peace in knowing that his health issues are now behind him.  Thank you, Frank, for always being a force for good in the lives of all who knew and loved you and may the Lord keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again.

LouJean Scott

LouJean Scott, 88, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, March 6, 2021, at her home.

A private graveside service and burial will be held at Pence Cemetery, rural Baldwin, Iowa.

LouJean Kleinsmith was born on May 20, 1932 in Wheatland, Iowa, to Forrest August and Maureen Katherine (Thompson) Kleinsmith. Born during the Great Depression, LouJean spent her childhood packing a cardboard box to live with one relative after another.

She graduated from Elwood High School in May of 1951 and married her high school sweetheart, Dale A. Scott Sr. on June 8, 1951 in Elwood, Iowa.

They rented a farm north of Nashville until 1963 when they purchased a farm on Esgate Road and raised four children there. She lived with her husband of 67 years and was a true partner in their farm operation until his death on April 4, 2019.

LouJean was a good athelete. She participated in basketball, cheerleading, softball and track. She enjoyed rollerskating and square dancing.

LouJean’s generosity was abundant. Family and friends all benefited from her gardening, baking, knitting and crocheting talents. Anyone stopping in to visit would leave with leftovers after having first shared a delicious meal.

For the past three years, LouJean battled breast cancer. She fought courageously to have more time with family and friends, eventually choosing quality of life during her last days.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Kathy (Dave) Borcherding of Bettendorf, IA, John Charles (Cheryl) Scott of Fort Collins, CO, and Glenda Jo (Kipp) Smallwood of Littleton, CO; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Dale A. Scott Jr., her husband, and beloved cat Mouse.

Keith was born September 18, 1955, in Dubuque, the son of Merle and Lucille Winders Anglin. On June 9, 1975 he married Nancy Ferguson in Dubuque.

Keith attended grade school at St. Columbkilles and went on to graduate from Dubuque Senior High School  in 1974. He was employed with Trausch Baking Company for 32 years before his retirement in 2004.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Keith loved spending time on the Mississippi River, especially at his cabin. He enjoyed Eagle Tours and cruises on the river, sunsets, as well as fishing. On Sunday’s you could find Keith and Nancy cruising around in his Mustang convertible. Above all, Keith cherished being a “gramps.”

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; two daughters, Kelly (Jordan) Finley of Des Moines, and Sandy (Calvin) Denlinger of LaMotte; two grandchildren, Cadence and William; three brothers, Kenny (Diane) Anglin of Dubuque, P.J. (Tina) Anglin of Hazel Green, WI, and Steven (Tanya) Anglin of Dubuque.

He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Robert, Ronald, and Gary.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nurses and staff at the University of Madison Hospital.

William Gaber

William “Bill” Gaber, 80, of Dubuque, died Saturday, March 6, 2021, at the Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque surrounded by his family.

William was born March 3, 1941, in Galena, IL, the son of Virgil and Rita Bauer Gaber. On November 22, 1962, he married Carol Knockel in St. Catherine Catholic Church.

Bill worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 33 years and was a member of UAW Local #94.

He was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Key West Sportsman Club, St. Donatus Community Club, and President of the Best Grandpas Club. He was a long time coach of Don’s Fishermen’s Wharf Women’s Softball Team. He loved the outdoors and watching and feeding birds. He was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Iowa Hawkeyes.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Gaber of Dubuque; two sons, Joe (Amy) Gaber of Dickeyville, WI, and Dave Gaber of Dubuque; one daughter, Shelly (Don) Grant of Dubuque; eight grandchildren, Michael (Clayton Tschirhart) Gaber, Ryan (Brittany) Gaber, Noah Gaber, Connor Grant, Jase Grant, Breann Grant, Grace Gaber, Ellie Gaber; one great-grandchild due in April; two sisters, Peggy (Jerry) Kirchner and Patty (Larry) Schleicher, both of Galena, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and in-laws, Bill and Kate Knockel, and one brother, Jim Gaber.

Verval N. Sampson

Verval N. Sampson, 92, of Hazel Green, WI, passed peacefully on March 5, 2021 with family by her side at ManorCare Health Services in Dubuque.

Private family services will be held at Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden, Iowa. The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque is serving the family.

She was born on October 30, 1928 in Boone County, Iowa, daughter of Clarence “Duke” and Mabel (Peters) Maas.

She married DeWayne Sampson on January 9, 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden, Iowa.

Verval worked at Roshek’s and J. C. Penney prior to her retirement. She enjoyed sewing, reading, spending time with her grandkids and traveling with DeWayne especially to Denver.

Surviving are her 2 daughters Susan (Larry) Droessler of Platteville, WI, and Jayne (Randy) Temperley of East Dubuque, IL; 5 grandchildren Sheldon (Angie) Splinter, Cameron Splinter, Benjamin (Caiti) Droessler, Jordan (Carrie) Droessler and Maggie (Matt) Droessler; 3 great grandchildren Ellie, Finley and Piper; a sister Janet (Randy) Reutter and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband DeWayne, her son Terry, an infant son David DeWayne and an infant daughter Vicki Sue.

Robert Anderson

Robert “Bob” Anderson, age 84, of Cassville, Wisconsin, completed his earthly journey on March 4, 2021, at Mercy One in Dubuque. To honor Bob’s life, his Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Alpena, Michigan, at a later date. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Bob’s family.

Bob was born on December 9, 1936, in Alpena, Michigan, a son to Myrto and Olga (Jantz) Anderson. He grew up surrounded by family and friends and not only developed a strong work ethic in his early years, but also an astonishing athletic record. Bob was a proud member of the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame as he had earned 10 varsity letters in football, baseball, basketball, and track, and even maintained his long jump record for over 25 years. He carried his drive for winning over into the business world seamlessly as adulthood entered the equation. With his beautiful bride of 64 years, Charlene Frantz, at home cheering him on, Bob began his career with the Ben Franklin and Woolworth stores until he eventually attained his dream of owning his own business. Roberts Arts & Crafts in Addison, Illinois, was an undeniable success which thankfully allowed Bob to provide for his family and move into early retirement as well.  Searching for the tranquility of small-town life, Bob and Charlene moved to Cassville, Wisconsin, to enjoy the good life. Spending an afternoon in the timber cutting wood was just what the doctor ordered for this gentle and humble man. Bob embraced all that was good in this life and was beyond kind and generous with those around him. We are heart-broken today as we face the realization that Bob has been called home ahead of us, but we will thankfully find peace in the days ahead as we reflect on the abundance of memories he so diligently worked on creating. Thank you, Bob, for all of the love and lessons you shared throughout your 84 years among us, and may you have eternal peace, as we seek healing, until we meet again.

Thelma W. Kerkman

Thelma Wendel Kerkman, 94, of Elwood, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, March 4, 2021, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.

A celebration of her life is pending and will be announced at a later date.  A private graveside service and burial will be held at the Elwood, Iowa Cemetery.  The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

Thelma Wendel was born on March 29, 1926 during a snowstorm at Delmar, Iowa.  Dr. Owen Frank was the attending doctor.  Her parents were George and Manuella (Werner) Wendel. At the age of one, Thelma moved with her parents back to the old Wendel farm two miles east of Elwood, where she attended Elwood Consolidated School and graduated in 1944. She then attended Cornell College at Mount Vernon for two years and transferred to the University of Iowa at Iowa City where she graduated with a major in Biology and a minor in Art Education in 1948. She taught one year at Shell Rock High School and saved enough money to return to the University of Iowa to take more science classes.

Thelma married Dean Kerkman of Van Horne, Iowa at the Elwood Methodist Church on June 11, 1950. They moved to Greely Colorado then to Alabama.  Next moving to Manhattan, Beloit and finally Lawrence, Kansas where Dean received a PHD in Clinical Psychology and Thelma became an Occupational Therapist. Thelma taught school for seven years and served as an Occupational Therapist for 17 years in hospitals in Kansas City and at the Leavenworth VA Hospital.  While working at the Leavenworth VA, Thelma and her husband went on medical tours to Spain, Russia, Greece, Scandinavia, Central Europe, the Balkans, Australia and New Zealand as well as the British Isles. They also visited relatives in Austria, Germany, and Denmark.

While living in Lawrence Kansas, Thelma served as a Girl Scout leader, camp director and president of the Kaw Valley Council which covered five counties. Later she became the leader of the Sunflower 4-H Club in Douglas county for several years. She was also a member of the Lawrence Flower Club and served as junior flower club leader for 25 years helping children to grow flowers, make ceramic containers and make scrapbooks to enter them into state competitions. After she retired from the Leavenworth VA, she joined the Kaw Valley Quilters Guild, Lawrence Doll Collectors Club and Cloth Doll Club.

In 1994, Thelma and Dean moved from Kansas to the Wendel farm east of Elwood, Iowa. They planted many trees, shrubs and flower beds. While there, they painted eight buildings and put new roofs on them. Thelma joined the Maquoketa Garden Club, Town and Country Quilters Guild, Hawkeye Doll Club and the Hello Dollies Club of the Quad Cities.  She also belonged to the Genealogy and Retired Teachers Clubs in both Jackson and Clinton counties and was a member of the American Legion Post and Auxiliary at Lost Nation.   For many years, she was an active member of the Elwood Methodist Church and enjoyed visiting other churches in the area for church dinners.

Thelma is survived by her sister, Barbara Downey of Preston, 3 children; Dennis, Renay and Amy (Ken) as well as 4 grandchildren; Amelia and Adam Kerkman, and Conrad and Benjamin Manaugh. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dean, and sisters Betty Mae Parker and Bonnie Winchip.

Joyce L. Becker

Joyce L. Becker, 92, of Dubuque, died Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

Joyce was born September 20, 1928, in Garretson, SD, the daughter of John and Lora J. Meier Schurman. On September 22, 1951, she married Walter Becker in Sioux City. He died December 9, 1989.

She graduated from Garretson High School in Garretson, SD. She graduated from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA and the University of Dubuque with her BSN degree at age 62.

Joyce was employed as a Registered Nurse at the former Xavier Hospital, Dubuque; Fairview Hospital, Edina, Minnesota.; Mercy Hospital, Dubuque and completed her nursing career at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, for 10 years before retiring in 1994. Following her retirement she referred to herself as “a has been nurse.” She was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Survivors include four sons, Jeffrey (Janice) Becker of Broken Bow, OK, Brian, Brad, and Sam Becker all of Dubuque; three daughters, Kristin Lineen of Cheyenne, WY, Kim (Greg) Yoko of Dubuque, Jennifer (Mark) Wagstaff of Roxboro, NC; Daughter-in-law, Gerry Becker of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Brandon (Kresha) Becker, Erienne Becker, Zeb (Samantha) and Ben (Becca Kuhle) Yoko; three sisters, Joan VandeVorde of Pipe Stone, MN, Gertrude Duffert of Flandreau, SD, and Kay (Roland) Kortlever of Alexandria, MN.

Besides her husband she is preceded in death by three sons, Mike and Todd Becker both July 9, 1983 and Mark Becker on March 11, 2019; one sister, Luetta Peake and one brother, Edwin Schurman.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Assisi Village, Stonehill Health Center, as well as Hospice of Dubuque for their love and care they have shown to Joyce over the years and recent weeks.

Judith M. Ellerie

Judith Mae Ellerie, 77, of Sherrill, IA passed away on March 1st, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm on Saturday, March 6th, 2021 at First Congregational United Church of Christ. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm. with Rev. Judith Mae Ellerie (Miller) was born on September 19th, 1943 in San Jose, California to Leonard and Geraldine (Frith) Miller.

She married Ronald Lee Ellerie on August 29th, 1964 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

Judy worked at Flexsteel, Oak Ridge Athletics, Northwest Fabrics, and LT Amusements.

She was a member of Tops, St. Luke’s choir, Quilters club, Girl Scout leadership, Recovery, and a longtime bowler.

Judy was an amazing wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, and friend. Judy’s family always came first and she truly believed that family was not just blood.

She was an accomplished seamstress. She loved to quilt, embroider, knit and swim. Judy was an avid reader and spent countless weekends camping and square dancing with family and friends. She loved with her whole heart.

Judy is survived by her Husband, Ronald Lee Ellerie, daughters, Lisa (Tom) Bodnar and Jamie Lee Ellerie; grandchildren, Ryan (Alexandra) Fagan, Eric Fagan, Kay Lee Merritt Fagan, Destinee Joy Szoenyi, sister, Sandra (Steven) Bahl, sister-in-law, Lori (Jim) Depew.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Geraldine (Frith) Miller and Milt Backas; brothers, Albert Miller Sr., Leonard Miller Jr., Richard Miller, Franklin Miller Sr.; sisters-in-law, Carol Bishop and Carol Pins; nephews, Albert Miller Jr., Martin Miller, Timothy Miller, Brain Gloden and her niece Lyne King.

Memorial in Judy’s name may be given to Hospice of Dubuque and Shriners.

Joan M. Heitz

Joan Marie Heitz, 84, of Dubuque, IA passed away peacefully on March 2nd, 2021 at Bethany Home in Dubuque.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 8th, 2021 at St. Joseph Key West Church with Rev. Rodney Allers officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Joan was born on June 17, 1936, the daughter of Francis and Loretta (Pauly) Loes. She graduated from the Visitation Academy in Dubuque. Joan married Carl Heitz on October 12, 1957 at Saint Joseph Key West Catholic Church and they spent 52 years together, taking many road trips and enjoying monthly card parties with friends. Joan also spent many days at the ballparks with Carl, watching him play and coach Prairie League Ball. Over the years, Joan kept books for several Dubuque businesses, however she took the most pride in maintaining a spotless home and being a Mom/Nana/Grandma to her children and grandchildren. Joan also enjoyed being outside, petting her kitties and working in her flower beds.

Those left to cherish her memory include her five children Cynthia (Lynn B.) Fuller of Dubuque, Mark (Julie) Heitz of St. Donatus, Lanny (Tanie) Heitz of Laramie, WY, Dale (Marilyn) Heitz of Sherrill, Daniel (Pamela) Heitz of Ouray, CO; ten grandchildren: Lynn H. “Tut” (Alison) Fuller, Thomas Fuller, Chad Heitz, Carrie (Zachary) Hermsen, Cody Heitz, Kyle (Sommer) Heitz, Stephanie Heitz, Lauren (Tyler) Heggie, Courtney Heitz, and Curtis Heitz; seven great grandchildren: Madeleine, Hadley, Lynn J., Halle, Lucas, Carson, and Claire; her siblings Paul (Janice) Loes, John (Rosalie) Loes and Marian Newman, and in-laws Bruce (Mary Lou) Heitz and Anna Mae LeConte, along with many nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl in 2010, a sister Jane Reilly, and two brothers-in-law, Gerald Newman and Richard LeConte.

In lieu of flowers, a Joan Heitz memorial fund has been established.
