Frederick J. Smothers
Frederick J. “ Fred” Smothers, age 74, of Dubuque, Iowa, completed his earthly journey on February 13, 2021, at UnityPoint-Finley Hospital in Dubuque.  To honor Fred’s life, his Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, June 19th, 2021, at the Tri-State Community Church, 12937 Derby Grange Road in Dubuque, with Pastor Jack Redmond officiating.  Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Fred’s family.
Fred was born on July 22, 1946, in Dubuque, Iowa, a son to Howard and Maxalinda (Carroll) Smothers. Fred was, first and foremost, a family man and the driving force in his entire 74 years among us clearly centered on that fact. He earnestly spent his working years providing for his family in a few favorite fields. Fred loved driving truck, whether for the RTA, Leslein Construction, Top Block, or Warren; if Fred was behind the wheel with a gear grinder in his right hand, he was a very content man that day. He also spent time perfecting his welding skills for a stent and even devoted some time to the Ford Motor Company when he was in Michigan. Fred’s work ethic was as strong as his love for his family at home was, but he also knew how to unwind and relax when the workday was done. Camping and fishing were constants on the list, but a little bingo never hurt, and if a little traveling and vacationing could be fit into the schedule, then Fred was sure to always vote a solid yes on the discussion. Fred was also a generous soul outside of his family and opened his home whenever possible to those who needed a little extra love and support in their lives. A wonderful foster parent who would attempt to be funny at times, but still consistently caring no matter how tough the crowd was. Fred embraced life and all that is good in it. Kind and gentle were his approach with a mix of genuine concern and tough love mixed in for good measure. We will miss our dear Fred immensely until we are able to see him again, but we thankfully find peace, as we seek healing, knowing that His loving Lord and Savior has now welcomed Fred into his eternal home. Thank you, Fred, for leaving us so many beautiful memories to treasure while we’re apart and may the same God who comforts you today be gracious enough to spread a little extra upon our hearts as well. We love you forever and will miss you more than you could know!

Tom was born April 26, 1950 in Dubuque, the son of Florian and Charlene (Curtis) Herrig. Tom moved to the downtown area of Dubuque, living at various places, at a young age. He was known to many as “Walking Tom”.
Tom was a cowboy at heart who loved old country music, watching westerns and could be seen wearing a cowboy hat and boots when out and about.
Tom was strong in his faith attending mass regularly and praying his “beads” daily. He knew every priest by name and they knew him. He loved attending family gatherings and would always ask where the next one would be-always ready and waiting outside with a container of cookies to share.
Tom had a great memory for names, dates and phone numbers with a list of people he would call daily, if you were lucky enough to be one of those people you always knew what he had for dinner and how many cups of coffee he had.
Tom could be seen attending many AA meetings, enjoyed going to The Source and belonged to the Fellowship Club. He went to every church festival, breakfast and steak fry if he could catch a ride, but his favorite pastime was “going out to eat” and if he was lucky, ending with a big piece of pie.
Those left to cherish his memory are his brothers Richard (Kim) Herrig of Dubuque, Dennis Herrig of Tulsa OK, Kevin (JoAnn) Herrig of St. Catherine and Todd Herrig of Mesa, AZ. and one sister Anni (John) Hallock of Six Mile, SC; many nieces and nephews and cousins and we can’t forget to mention all those friends he made along the way who gave him rides, took him out for coffee and accepted him in their lives for who he was.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials will be given to St. Donatus Church.
Sherry L. Flack
Sherry L. Flack, age 53, of Hanover, IL, completed her earthly journey, after a courageous 4-year battle with metastatic breast cancer, on April 27, 2021, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport, surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Sherry’s life, her Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at Sherry’s home, 103 Franklin Street in Hanover, where family and friends may gather from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Sherry’s family.
Sherry was born on October 23, 1967, in Lockport, IL, the only daughter to Bradley J. and Joan (Rodseth) Scott. She developed her adventurous spirit during her formative years in Princeton, IL, and was a proud graduate of Princeton High School, Class of ’85. Sherry went on to be a flight attendant with American Airlines for over 10 years, based primarily at La ’Guardia, JFK, and Newark in New York, before eventually ending her career at Chicago O’Hare. Sherry’s love for traveling the world, along with learning about other countries and their cultures was only sparked even more and her travels diligently continued all of the way through her last trip to Costa Rica with Carter and Caleb this past February. Sherry, Todd, and the family made numerous trips to Central America, Ireland, England, Scotland, and so many more wonderful locations around the globe, always staying among the genuine areas and people to truly gain the experience that would last a lifetime. Her love for fox hunting was fulfilled multiple times in Ireland with the Galway Brazers and the Grallagh Harriers, but her treasured memories of hunting with the Massbach Hounds right here at home were also among her favorite ways to spend a fine fall day. Sherry was also well-known for her love of animals, especially her horses and canine companions. Her 2 Russian Wolf Hounds always held a special place in her heart, along with her Friesian Shire Horse, Jameson, who she also brought home to the states with her as well, were all her pride and joy. She spent endless hours riding, training, showing, and boarding on their Apple River Ranch in Hanover, and Sherry always knew that she had found a little slice of heaven right here on earth each and every day. It’s impossible to imagine a world without Sherry’s determined smile and strong character walking among us, but we know that she fought bravely until the very last moment. Many broken hearts are left behind today with the absence of Sherry’s love and light in our days ahead, but we trust that the Lord will now give her peace from her earthly struggles and allow her to be reunited with her father and son who will all be waiting patiently until we can join them again one day. Thank you, Sherry, for teaching us that living every day to its fullest is possible and may your legacy bring us some peace while we search for healing in time.
