Judith K. Ambrosy

Judith Kay “Judy” Ambrosy, 75, of LaMotte, IA passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at her home. A private family service will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. Dubuque with Fr. Dave Ambrosy officiating. A livestream of the memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the Leonard funeral home Facebook page. Burial will be held on a later date at Holy Rosary Cemetery in LaMotte.

Judy was born on July 19, 1945 in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Donald and Seraphia (Huber) Duehr. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. On August 29, 1964 she married Delbert H. Ambrosy of LaMotte. In the late 1960’s, Delbert and Judy took over the Ambrosy family farm in LaMotte.

Judy worked for Dubuque Senior High School as an audio-visual aide for 22 years, and maintained many friendships after her time there. She was a very outgoing and social person who loved to organize get-togethers with friends and family. She was a member of the LaMotte ladies’ card club, which met monthly for over 40 years, and regularly met a group of old classmates for lunches. She enjoyed a wide range of crafts, including ceramics, quilting, decorating cakes, making Christmas ornaments, and making, selling and gifting her handmade jewelry to her friends and family. Over the years, she and Delbert enjoyed square dancing, bowling, and a community snowmobiling club.

During her youth growing up in Dubuque, Judy’s favorite activities were roller skating and rock & roll dances at the Melody Mill.  She was an avid dancer, and many have fond memories of dancing with her at weddings over the years.

Judy was appreciated by her many, many friends for her bright smile and her fun laugh, and her warmth, selflessness and generosity. It was common for her to take up collections to help those less fortunate, or those experiencing hard times or adversity. While working at Senior High, she started an annual collection to help students in need during the holidays, ensuring they would receive Christmas gifts.

She is survived by her husband Delbert; her children, Todd (Laurie) Ambrosy, Sheri (Craig) Kruser, and Donette (Phil Sheridan) Ambrosy; eight grandsons, Nicholas Schmitt, Cole and Logan Ambrosy, Collin, Brock and Blake Kruser and Leander and Edrick Sheridan; as well as her siblings, Frank (Carol) Duehr, Carol Theis, and Michael (Patricia) Duehr.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, and three of her children, Tony, Gwen and Ross Ambrosy. She bravely shared her experiences with profound loss and grieving to classrooms at Dubuque Senior during her time there.

Sister Mary Judine Bruch, BVM

Sister Mary Judine Bruch, BVM, 91, of 1130 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021, at Caritas Center.

Sharing of Memories via Zoom will be at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021. Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel followed immediately by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Sister Mary Judine was an elementary teacher in Des Moines, Iowa; Chicago; San Francisco; Omaha, Nebr.; and Missoula, Mont., and also served as principal in Omaha and Missoula.  She ministered as a parish minister in Denver and a counselor in Wheat Ridge, Colo.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1930, in Granite City, Ill., to Oliver and Mazie (Homyer) Bruch. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1947, from St. Joseph Parish, Granite City, Ill. She professed first vows on March 19, 1950, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1955.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Lois Jean Bruch, Virginia Lee Gale, Louise Rees, and Theresa Gundlach; and brothers John Robert and Walter Bruch. She is survived by a sister-in-law Thelma Bruch, Granite City, Ill., nieces, nephews and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 73 years.

Loras J. Hanten

Loras J. Hanten, 85, of Dubuque died Thursday, February 18, 2021.  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Loras was born November 1, 1935, in Key West, Iowa, son of Raymond and Salome (Walsh) Hanten.

He graduated from Loras Academy and Loras College.

On April 20, 1963, Loras married Patricia Roth at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He worked in sales most of his career, retiring from the Vernon Company.

Loras is survived by his wife, Pat Hanten of Dubuque; two children, Randy Hanten of Clive, IA and Becky Hanten of Milwaukee, WI; two grandsons, Adam and Matthew Hanten of Clive; a sister, Geri Goodman of Dubuque and a brother Dan Hanten of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother in law, Mellita and Bob Pommerich; brother, Eugene Hanten; Sister in law, Barbara Hanten; and a brother in law, Tom Goodman.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care.

Anna L. Loeffelholz

Anna Louise Loeffelholz, 75, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on February 17, 2021 at home surrounded by family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 22, 2021 at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church with Rev. Steven Garner officiating. Anna was born on January 22, 1946 in Dubuque, IA the daughter of Emil and Loretta (Stecher) Buscher. She attended Holy Ghost Elementary School and graduated from Wahlert High School in 1964.

On July 29, 1967 she married Michael Loeffelholz at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. She worked as a seamstress, sold Mary Kay Cosmetics and worked as a Paraprofessional for the Dubuque Community School District. Above all, Anna was a homemaker and loving mother.

Anna was a devoted wife and mother; she was kind, nurturing, spirited and incredibly selfless. Her children were her world, and her grandchildren were the light of her life.

Her catholic faith and trust in Jesus Christ were easily evident by how she lived her life. From family to strangers, she always welcomed everyone with a bright smile and heart full of love and compassion. She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Heaven has gained a beautiful soul.

Anna is survived by her husband, Michael; children Mark (Kathy) Loeffelholz, Jason (Kelsi) Loeffelholz, and Amber (Clint) Ruden; grandchildren Tim & Brooke Finn, Carter Loeffelholz, Jadyn Loeffelholz and Hanah Ruden.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Robert, James, Richard and Marjorie; a nephew David Riniker and a niece Michelle Donar.

The family would like to thank the University of Iowa Hospital and Mayo Clinic for their care and love to Anna. A special thank you to Tim from Palliative Care, the nurses of Hospice of Dubuque, Leonard Funeral Home and Holy Spirit Parish for all their care and kindness they have shown Anna and her family.

Donald C. Oliver

Donald C. Oliver, 92, of 351 Highland Dr. East Dubuque, Illinois passed away peacefully on Thursday February 18, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Private family services will be held at the East Dubuque Cemetery. A memorial mass will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque.  The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque is assisting the family.

Don was born on September 11^th, 1928, in East Dubuque, to Donald L. and Cecelia {Verbugt} Oliver.

Don married Geraldine Knaeble on July 29^th, 1950 at St. Mary’s Church East Dubuque, Illinois, she preceded him in death on September 12, 2019.

He worked as a lineman for Interstate Power Co. for over 40 years retiring in 1989.  Don had a passion for fishing and was a guide for many years taking many out to enjoy the Mighty Mississippi!  He made his own lures and jigs with the help of his 5 children.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and also a member of IBEW.

Don and Gerry enjoyed many trips to Florida, Texas and Arizona during the winter months.  They also enjoyed the many river trips they took up and down the Mississippi with their friends.  Don and Gerry had a huge vegetable garden for many years which they shared with their children.  Don enjoyed playing euchre with his children whenever the opportunity arose.

Surviving are his 5 children:  Larry {Diane} Oliver, Sandy {Tom} Sitzmann, Cindy {Lee Theis} Oliver, Amanda O’Connor and Sarah Oliver; 6 grandchildren; 1 step grandchild,; 5 great grandchildren; a sister Carol  {Wesley} Boal and a sister Kay {Don} Zillig.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gerry, his parents, and a sister Anne Meeks.

Betty J. Dolter

Betty (Elizabeth) J. Dolter passed away on February 16, 2021 at Luther Manor Grand Meadows after a brief illness surrounded by her family.

Betty was born August 31, 1932 in Dubuque, Iowa, to Julia (Elliott) and Lawrence McCurdy. She was the oldest of five siblings. She attended Sacred Heart School in Dubuque and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy, Class of 1950. Betty worked at Medical Associates Clinic from 1950 to 1955 in the bookkeeping department. At that time, only 28 doctors were on staff. On October 1, 1955, she married Paul A. Dolter at St. Mary’s Church in Dubuque. After their marriage, Betty and Paul moved to Chicago where Paul began his engineering and management career. They moved quite often, wherever his career took them. Betty and Paul shared 59 wonderful years together before his death on December 29, 2014. Together, Betty and Paul leave a living legacy with seven children, eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Betty was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.  Much beloved, she was an expert homemaker, caring for and managing a busy family household of nine. She loved gardening and flowers, especially geraniums. Known for her many hats, she delighted in music and singing, and was a member of the Resurrection parish choir for 14 years. Betty enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre, with family and friends. She and Paul belonged to and hosted monthly card clubs during their lifetime. They reveled in attending and hosting Eaton Corporation company events – parades, picnics, holiday parties and Management Club. She treasured the annual July 4th Galena family vacations as well as the annual Christmas and Thanksgiving holiday get-togethers with children, grandchildren, and her brothers and sister at her daughter Kathy’s home. During these family gatherings, much time was spent laughing and playing games – Catch Phrase, Taboo, Trivial Pursuit, charades, and card games – and watching sports, especially football and golf. Betty loved to laugh with her family over shared stories of times past and present.

Betty is survived by her seven children: Jane Geary, Glendale, Arizona; Dr. Kathy Dolter, Asbury, Iowa; Beth Dolter, Iowa City; Patti (Tom) Rohn, Peosta, Iowa; Peter (Suzette) Dolter, Prairie Grove, Illinois; Paul S. Dolter, Dubuque, Iowa; and Ellen (Terry) Sievert, Barrington, Illinois. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren Maureen (Josh) Goldman, Burke, Virginia; Kevin (Kathy) Rohn, Boston, Massachusetts; Andrew Gordon, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Julia Rohn, St. Andrews, Scotland; Colleen Geary, Tempe, Arizona; Nick Dolter, Palatine, Illinois; Carter, Trent and Rylan Dolter, Prairie Grove, Illinois and Jacob and Joshua Sievert, Barrington, Illinois; and three great grandchildren, Caleb and Felicity Goldman and Layla Dolter.  Betty is also survived by her siblings, Jerome McCurdy and Robert McCurdy, Dubuque; Linda (Phil) Hobart, Cedar Rapids; and Steve (Connie) McCurdy, Chicago, Illinois; her sister-in-law Judy Dolter and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents, Lawrence “Butch” and Julia McCurdy; her half-sister, Mary Lou Roussel; and her in-laws Elizabeth and Frank Dolter; brothers and sisters in-law Frank (Alma) Dolter; Father Bob Dolter, Dick (Delphine) Dolter; Jim Dolter; Margaret (Dr. Lincoln) Steffens; Tom (Velma) Dolter; Joe (Rita) Dolter; Dave Dolter; and Mary (Jim) Link.

The family would also like to honor the surviving members of the “Dolter Nieces and Aunts Luncheon Group” Aunt Judy Dolter and Nieces Lynnette Howe, Suzanne Muir, Judy Vorwald, and Jane Dolter;  Mom’s closest friends Mary Anne Zugenbuehler and Fran Haupert for their friendship since their school days; and Dad’s secretary, Jeannine Swett, for her enduring friendship.

The family would like to thank Dr. Steffen and his staff at Medical Associates, Primary Care; Dr. Horwitz, Trisha, Travis, and Martha and the nurses of the MercyOne ER and ICU; the nursing staff of 3 West MercyOne, especially Candy; Jeremiah of Hospice of Dubuque; and though it was a short time, the nursing staff of Luther Manor Grand Meadows, for the excellent care she received.

Jacqueline S. (Parramore) Lang

Jacqueline S. (Parramore) Lang, 60, of Maquoketa, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at Jackson County Regional Medical Center.  A memorial visitation will be Monday, February 22, 2021 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue.  Inurnment will be at a later date in 1^st Presbyterian Cemetery in Bellevue.

Facemasks will be required and please respect social distancing during the visitation.

Jackie was born February 18, 1960 in Chinon, France to Hozell and Connie (Lee) Parramore.  She graduated from Killeen Texas Public High School in 1978.  Jackie married Roger “Doc” Lang in 2001.  She worked at McDonald’s 1996 – 2009.  Jackie loved playing BINGO, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Roger “Doc” Lang; her parents Hozell and Connie Parramore; siblings, Dixie (Dan) Valant and Karen Parramore; children, Courtney (DJ Glaser) Edens, Daniel (Sharice) Parramore, Brittany (Anthony) McDonald, and Joe (Courtnay) McDonald; grandchildren, Angela, Chris, Amber, Alayna, Sienna, Wrigley, Karlynn, and Kody; great-grandchildren, Taylan, Noah, Emmaleigh, and Gunner; a niece, Kristin (Kevin) Nolen; a nephew Neal (Heather) Valant; and great niece, Joslyn and a great-nephew, Quinn.

Jackie was preceded in death by a daughter, Temple Edens and a niece, Tory Morgan Valant.

A memorial fund has been established in Jackie’s memory.

Roger J. Meyer

Roger J. Meyer, age 80, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2020, at Luther Manor, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Roger was born January 2, 1940, in Dubuque, son of Clarence F. and Bernice V. (Stoffel) Meyer. He grew up on the family farm in Balltown, Iowa. His family, faith and baseball were large parts of his life. His favorite past-time growing up was playing baseball with his brother Bob and the Sigwarth boys, with his sister Betty (Kress) usually nearby. His autobiography details early memories of driving tractors, listing who won the World Series and going down to Waupeton to wait for the train so he could bring home the Sunday morning paper.

One of the ‘Buenie’ Brimeyer girls (Mary Lou) introduced herself to Roger in June of 1959. They had their first date a few months later, their second in June of the following year and were engaged in early 1961. He wrote in his autobiography: “she would become the love of my life.” They married on September 23, 1961, and they celebrated 59 years of marriage this year.

Roger, a devoted husband, father, uncle, friend and baseball coach, positively influenced the lives of many around him. We are heartbroken that he is gone, but we are relieved to know that he is in a better place looking over us.

Roger was a long-time member of St. Anthony’s Parish in Dubuque. He retired from John Deere after 31 years of faithful service. He then spent his time watching his beloved Chicago Cubs, providing landscaping services, and delivering flowers for HyVee. He greatly enjoyed all of these activities and the people he met. He also cherished visits to see his family and trips to Branson.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Lou (Brimeyer) and children John (Jennifer) Meyer of Omaha, NE and Tony Meyer of Cedar Falls, IA; grandchildren Hailey, Lydia, Jackson and Alison Meyer. Roger is also survived by his brother, Robert ‘Bob’ (Ruth), sister Betty (Leo) Kress and many nieces and nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and by his loving daughter, Anne Marie Meyer (1993).

A private family burial service was held at Mount Calvary Cemetery with Sr. Margaret Anne Kramer officiating.

Due to the COVID pandemic, a celebration of life for family and friends will be held at a later date, when people can safely gather. Memorials may be directed to the family and will be distributed among Roger’s favorite charities.

The family would like to thank the staff in the memory care unit at Luther Manor and Hospice of Dubuque for their gentle care.

Sister Josephine (Philip) Schmitz, OSF

Sister Josephine (Philip) Schmitz, OSF, died at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at Clare House, Dubuque, Iowa

A private Celebration of Life and Rite of Final Commendation will be held at Clare House Chapel, Mount St. Francis Center, at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 2021. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Sr. Josephine was born on October 28, 1922 in Jefferson, South Dakota, the daughter of Henri and Barbara (Wantz) Schmitz

She entered the Sisters of St. Francis September 14, 1940 and made final profession of vows August 10, 1946. Sister received her master’s degree at Clarke College, Dubuque, IA. She ministered as a teacher in Iowa at Granville, Dyersville, St. Mary’s-Waterloo, Stacyville, St. Michael- Sioux City, Sacred Heart-Dubuque, LaMotte, Guttenberg, and St. Mary-Dubuque. In Illinois she was missioned at Corpus Christi-Chicago and Midlothian. She later ministered at Alverno Apartments in Dubuque as an office assistant and meal coordinator for seniors.

Survivors: Sister is survived by her nieces, nephews, and Franciscan sisters.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Amelia (Leo) Fitzgibbons, Mary (Alvin) Troyer, and Theresa Schmitz; her brothers, John (Josephine) Schmitz, Henri Schmitz, and two infant brothers.

Barbra A. (Waller) Gantenbein

Barbra Ann (Waller) Gantenbein, 74, passed away early in the morning on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 in the comforting care of her home at Seventh Heaven in Dubuque, Iowa.

A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with Pastor Penny Knutson officiating. Burial will follow in Rockdale United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Barb was born on July 4th, 1946 in Dubuque. She was the daughter of Clarence and Elizabeth, though following their divorce she was sent to be raised in the home of cousins Robert and Leona Watters. Barb was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High, class of 1964.
On September 10, 1966, Barb married Carl Anthony Gantenbein at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Barb and Tony had four children together, losing one in infancy. Both hardworking farmers at heart, they raised their three surviving children on their beloved farm that they called the T and 4 B Ranch.

As one would expect from someone born on the 4th of July, Barb was a firecracker. Outgoing and personable, she worked for many years as a waitress at Ioco truck stop, where she was known and loved by travelers and locals alike. Her entertaining companionship and excellent cooking were staples of many people’s experiences in the city. Suffice to say, she was as much a part of Dubuque as Dubuque was of her.

Barb thrived in the country life. A quintessential farm girl, she had an affinity for country music and antique tractors. One of her most defining traits was her love of animals, which she made sure to instill in her children and grandchildren. Undoubtedly it is a trait that will continue to be passed on through the generations—a legacy that honors Barb and would make her proud.

During the final years of her life, Barb navigated the foggy valley of dementia. Even as other things faded, she always maintained her spunk, energy, and good humor, providing her caretakers with many laughs and good memories. Her family is thankful for the devoted long-term care of the staff of Seventh Heaven, and the nurses of Hospice of Dubuque for ensuring comfort in her final days.

She is survived by her children, Brian (Linda) Gantenbein, Brenda (Randy) Jansen, and Brent (Rachel) Gantenbein; and her grandchildren Nathan and Nicholas Gantenbein, Gail Jansen, and Caden, Everlee, and Bo Gantenbein. She is also survived by sisters Sally O’Dell, Linda (Gerald) Hoftender, and Rosie (Randy) Stoffel; and brothers Thomas Waller, Earl (Janet) Waller, Alan (Tonya) Waller, and Bill (Joyce) Watters.

Barb was preceded in death by her birth and foster parents, her husband Tony, and her infant daughter Gail.

Robert E. Henning

Robert (Bob) Eugene Henning, age 86, of Cascade, IA, completed his earthly journey on February 16, 2021, at home surrounded by his loving family.  To honor Bob’s life, his Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m., at the Community Presbyterian Church, 216 Polk Street SE in Cascade, Iowa. Burial will be in the Cascade Township Cemetery.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Bob’s family.

Bob was born on April 15, 1934, in Kellogg, IA, a son to Albert and Minny (Redding) Henning. Bob was raised in the Newton, IA area where he would eventually meet the love of his life, Helen Lily Tutor.  The couple was united in marriage on March 14, 1953, and have been blessed with 67 wonderful years together and 5 children.

Bob retired after 36 loyal years as a cableman with AT&T. While working for AT&T Bob and his family moved all over the U.S. until they eventually settled down near Bernard, IA in December of 1969. Then in August of 2018 Bob and Helen moved into their final home in Cascade, IA.

In his free-time, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, Nascar, and playing cards with his friends. He was also an avid raccoon hunter, raised Redbone hunting dogs, and was a proud member of the Redbone Association for many years.

Bob was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy; his son, Robert Jr.; his parents; his brothers, Bill, Harold, Ronald, Albert “Skip” (Ona), Richard, Thomas, Michael, and Matthew; his sisters, Betty (Bill) Stafford, Alberta, Mary, Sandra, and Rebecca; his brother-in-law, Rod Walker; and his sister-in-law, Mary.

Susan Becker Huegnergarth

Susan Becker (Rys) Huehnergarth, 74, of Bellevue, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021.  Memorial Service will be 12:00 pm (Noon), Saturday, February 27, 2021 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bellevue, masks will be required and limited seating will be available due to social distancing during the memorial service.  Family will greet friends 9:00 am – 11:30 am prior to services at the church.

Memorial Services will be live broadcast on Bellevue Cable Channel 38 and will be uploaded on SaintJohn Devotion Youtube Channel following the services.

Susan Becker (Rys) Huehnergarth was born on April 5, 1946, in Pittsburgh PA. She was the daughter of Frederick and Dorothy(Becker) Rys, and the sister of Jacqueline Brogren and Louise  McCarl. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Brentwood, PA in 1950.

Susan graduated from Grier School for Girls in Tyrone, PA, and then attended William Woods College for Women in Fulton, MO.  In 1968, she graduated with a BA degree majoring in Art Education and Creamics.

On June 11, 1967, Susan married Christopher Huehnergarth in Pittsburg, PA.  After Susan’s graduation, they moved to Dubuque, IA so that Chris could attend the University of Dubuque Seminary.  Susan gave birth to her only son, Adam, in 1969.  He was wrapped in a onesie and laid in a dresser drawer because there was no crib for him in the house.  After the divorce, Susan and Adam moved to Bellevue when Adam was five.

To support Adam and herself, Susan did home cleaning and painting along with working at an eye doctor, doing custodial cleaning at the Savanah Army Depot, and the Dubuque Country Club.

Susan quit her cleaning service so that she could provided home health care for her special friend, Isabelle Rieckert who had had a stroke.  After Isabelle’s death, Susan took care of Isabelle’s sister Mary Weigert and her husband.  While caring for Mary, Susan also worked at Ensign until she retired.

Adam married Jenny Hermsen and they had three children: Rys, Adeline, and Owen.  Susan enjoyed having her grandchildren come for VBS each summer.  She also enjoyed playing UNO with her family when they came to visit her. Even though she never won, she still loved her family and was very proud of her grandchildren.

Susan was a strong willed and determined woman.  She enjoyed being a volunteer for the meals on wheels in Bellevue.  She also helped many elderly individuals with their computer issues.

As an active member at Saint John Lutheran, she did a lot of volunteering as the church’s IT person, photographer, web master, TV recorder and computer operator, cleaning the lodge, and maintaining the labyrinth. She was both a valuable partner in ministry with Pastor Paul as well as a very close and significant friend.

On February 15, 2021, Susan’s earthly journey ended at her home with Adam, Jenny, Kathy and Paul at her side.  On that day she passed through the gate of death and was brought to her heavenly place prepared for her by our Lord.  There Susan is united with all the saints of heaven including her parents, and sisters. Together with all the saints in heaven, she lives forever in the eternal joy and peace of God’s presence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bellevue.

Ethel M. Stillmunkes

Ethel M. Stillmunkes, 89, of Asbury, entered peacefully into eternal life on Sunday, February 14, 2021, at the Hawkeye Care Center. Melvin needed her as his dance partner at the Sweetheart Heavenly Ball for Valentine’s Day.

A public Mass of Christian Burial for Ethel will be Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 12 Noon at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Please respect our current social distancing requirements. The church requires masks be worn. Ethel was born February 8, 1932, in Dubuque, the daughter of Frank and Frances Utzig Stecklein. On September 6, 1952, she married Melvin F. Stillmunkes at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. She and Melvin enjoyed ballroom dancing and attended the Sweetheart Ball every year. After he passed away on January 1, 2006, she continued to ballroom dance and took up line dancing.

Ethel enjoyed cooking for her family, had a love for sweets, especially ice cream, playing tennis into her 70’s and praying the rosary. She was extremely competitive and never let anyone win, including her grandchildren, at board games or card games. Most of all, family was everything to Ethel.

Survivors include her four children, Gregory (Susan) Stillmunkes of Alleman, IA and their children, Jessica (Jeremiah) Long and Kyle (Nicole) Stillmunkes; Lynn (Tim) Steines of Dubuque and their children, Jenna (Brad) Lattner, Justin (Jess Schneider) Steines and Kristen (Andrew Fonck) Steines; Lisa (Humberto “Huey”) Padron and their child, Franco Padron; Beth (Chris) Stillmunkes and their children, Noah, Robert, Jaime, Rachel and Andrew; two great-granddaughters, Ruby and Avy Jo Lattner; three step-grandchildren, Alivia, Asher and Adrian; one great-grandson on the way and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her forever Valentine, Melvin; her parents; one brother and five sisters.

An Ethel M. Stillmunkes Memorial Fund has been established.

Jacob Blanchard

Jacob Blanchard, beloved son of Bill and Cathy Blanchard, and brother to loving sister Brittney Blanchard passed from this life at his home on Friday February 12, 2021.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be held at 4:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Jacob first and foremost loved his family and many friends. Jacob was a lover of a wide variety of outdoor activities ranging from skiing the mountains in Colorado with sister Brittney, jet skiing, motorcycle riding, and snowboarding in which he excelled, winning numerous medals against strong competition. During his early teenage years Jacob loved roaming around Dubuque with friends on his skateboard and performing stunts at the local skatepark. Jacob was fearless in attacking and performing unbelievable tricks on a snowboard or skateboard. Jacob’s numerous hospital visits could attest to that statement. Jacob lived life to the fullest during his twenty-five years, always up to any adventure his family and friends could dream up. If you wanted to explore or go on a spontaneous adventure, Jacob was your man.

Jacob recently purchased a house in which he spent many loving hours remodeling with Billy and Cathy. Jacob was known to be frugal in many ways. Turning off lights as he left the room and making sure the temperature was set just right to save on utility bills, but generous in spending time with family and friends. A few months after purchasing his house Jacob brought who he called his “Little Daughter” into his home known to everyone else as Coco the dog. Jacob would frequently stop by to check on Grandma Shirley and Grandpa Mel to see if they needed anything. Jacob enjoyed playing jokes on his sister Brittney, he called her “BiT-ney” in a funny voice, he even convinced her to fly off a jump in a terrain park while snowboarding in Colorado together. Jacob would check in with Mom and Dad everyday just to stay in touch. Jacob knew what mattered in life, and that was relationships. Jacob left behind many memories of laughter, joy, sorrow, and kindness. Goodbye to our sweet baby boy, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend Jacob Blanchard.

Those left behind to grieve and celebrate Jacob’s life are his parents Bill and Cathy Blanchard, sister Brittney, Grandparents Melvin and Shirly Maas, numerous Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Friends.

Jacob was proceeded in death by Grandpa Tom Blanchard, Grandma Betty Blanchard, and Uncle Brett Blanchard.

Daniel B. Fortmann

Daniel B. “Dan” Fortmann, 60, of Bellevue, Iowa passed away peacefully on February 12th, 2021 at home. A celebration of his life will be at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, IA is assisting the family.

Dan, also known as Bear or the Milkman, was born on September 6, 1960 in Dubuque, Iowa and was the son of Bernard Fortmann and Carolyn (Moriarity) Bolton. Dan worked for many years as a semi-truck driver.

Dan enjoyed a good time and had a great sense of humor; his smile could light up any room. He had a love for the dirt track and followed his father’s footsteps and began racing (#32) in the 1980’s up until the early 2000’s.

He is survived by his children, Jeremy Fortmann and Jackie Fortmann; his former wife and mother of his children, Elaine Fortmann. His siblings: Terry (Judy) Fortmann, Karen (Mark) Goedert and Kathy (Mike) Brokus. His step-father, Dick Bolton along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and dear friends that he will be remembered by.

Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn Bolton; his father Bernard Fortmann; and siblings, Bernie Fortmann, John Fortmann and Joan Fortmann.

A memorial fund has been established with Dupaco Community Credit Union; memorials may be made to the Dan Fortmann Memorial.
