Harriet M. Freese
Harriet M. Freese, 82, of Dickeyville, Wisconsin, left this world on Monday, March 23, 2020, knowing that the Q was closed. She would take her chances that there would be casinos in heaven. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Private family services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2020, at St. Andrew Church in Tennyson, Wisconsin, with Rev. Richard Leffler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is assisting the family. Services will be live streamed through Facebook on the funeral home page.
Harriet was born on August 21, 1937, in Grant County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Edward and Regina (Schroeder) Langmeier. She married Francis A. “Frankie” Freese on May 20, 1958, at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 8, 2013. Together they farmed in Potosi until moving to Dickeyville. Harriet enjoyed working in the field and her garden. Once off the farm she enjoyed her flowers, embroidery, and playing Euchre. She enjoyed when the family came to visit, sometimes giving them a work list to keep them busy and out of trouble.
Survivors include her children, Ruth (Jr) Reuter, Potosi, Karen (Dennis “Muskie”) Davis, Cuba City, Alan (Michelle) Freese, Potosi, Linda (Dan “Tag”) Schneider, Cassville, Amy (Byron) Schmidt, Stillwater, MN, and Kim (Matt) Knebel, Belmont; her sisters, Sally Dietzel, Dickeyville, Bernita Digman, Cuba City, Berneice (Kenny) Pickel, Kieler, and Janilda (Merlin) Busch, Geri (Joe) Timmerman, and Jean (John) Herbst, all of Dickeyville; her brothers, Donald (Mary Ann) Langmeier and Sylvester (Joyce) Langmeier, both of Cuba City; a sister-in-law, Rowetta Freese, Dubuque, IA; seventeen grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Tami Jo Cardey; a brother, Francis (Isabelle) Langmeier; two sisters, Mary Ann and Lila Langmeier; and four brothers-in-law, Ambrose Dietzel, Edward Digman; Joseph Freese and Norbert (Margaret) Welter.

Donald K. Robertson
Donald Keith Robertson, 84, of Dubuque died Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Luther Manor. In keeping with current restrictions on public gatherings, a private committal service will be held at Garrison Cemetery, Garrison, Iowa.
He was born November 11, 1935, son of Harry and Mattie (Noeller) Robertson. He graduated from Shellsburg High School and Northeast Area One.
He served in the US Army June 2, 1958. Two years active duty and 2 years reserve. He worked in a variety of department stores and later became a realtor.
He was an active member of Grandview United Methodist Church.
He received the three degrees of Symbolic Masonry in Mosaic Lodge No. 125 in 1972. He served as Master of this Lodge in 1977 and again in 1986. At the end of 2019 he retired as Secretary of the Lodge after serving in that office for twenty-eight years.
In 1992 he was appointed to the Finance Committee of the Grand Lodge of Iowa and in 1995-1996 served as the elected Grand Treasurer of the Grand Lodge. He also was proficient in Masonic ritual and was certified by the Grand Lodge to serve as a District Lecturer.
For many years he was an adult leader in Dubuque for Allen Chapter of the Order of DeMolay and was awarded the Cross of Honor and the Honorary Legion of Honor.
In addition to his membership in Mosaic Lodge, he was also a member of the Dubuque York Rite Bodies, Clinton Scottish Rite, and Julien Chapter No. 125 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
He is survived by his sister, Marilyn (Floyd) Petersen of Kingston, New York, their daughters, Dawn (Rob) Overton and their son Blake, and Colette Tighe; a sister in law Betty Robertson and her sons, Rick Robertson and his children, Sydney and Clark Robertson; Craig (Sherri Mullinex) Robertson and children, Cody Robertson, Alex Springer, Brittany (Aaron) Seaton and their Children, Camden and Reagan.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Wayne, Harold and Kermit Robertson.

Charles H. Schindler
Charles H. Schindler, 81, of Dyersville passed away Monday, March 23, 2020, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.
Please keep the family in your prayers during this difficult time as there will be a public Celebration of Life at a later date.
Charles was born January 1, 1939 in Dyersville the son of Albert and Lucille (Jasper) Schindler. He married Ellen Young on October 17th, 1959. She preceded him in death on November 11, 1965. He later married Theresa Funke on June 3, 1967.
Charlie was born a carpenter and went to Xavier school and then began working with his father. He then owned Schindler Bros. Construction and later CTS Construction. Charlie was well known for his skills and built many homes in the area. After he retired his sons took over the business currently known as CTS. Charlie loved drinking beer, polka dancing and was known for his one-liners. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He always put a smile on everyone’s face despite his struggles.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa; children: Steve (Daneen) Schindler of Earlville, Sandy (Randy) Bockenstedt of Sherrill, Joe (Jeni) Schindler of Dyersville, Dennis (Lisa) Schindler of Dyersville, Tammy Nefzger of Delhi, and Tracey (Tom) Dickman of Dyersville; grandchildren: Derek (Faith) Lammers, Monica (Joe) Lehman, Amanda (Luke) Krapfl, Melisa Gansemer, Josh (Emily) Schindler, Brandon (Fiancé, Kelly Wendt) Gansemer, Cody Schindler, Britney (Justin) Nie, Brock Schindler, Jordan Schindler, Colton Nefzger, Abbey Dickman, Drew Schindler, Jenna Nefzger, Ella Schindler, Charlie Dickman, Olivia Schindler and 8 great-grandchildren; siblings: Dar Schindler, Roy Schindler, Jane (Tom) Bechen, and Rosie (Chuck) Spielman; in-laws: Verna Lee Digman, Lois (Artie) Kern, Darlene (Wayne) Wegmann, Karen Funke, Janet Funke, Lawrence Lansing, Ginny (Karl) Manderscheid, and Lenny (Mags) Young.

Juanita V. (Baxter) Barrett
Juanita V. “Nita” (Baxter) Barrett, age 88, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 10:40 p.m., on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Because of the unprecedented conditions in our country right now due to the COVID-19 virus, private family services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is in charge of arrangements. Nita was born on January 4, 1932, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Bert and Daisy (VanTassel) Baxter.
Nita was a life long resident of Dubuque, who graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, and was very proud of never missing a single day of class. She devoted over 30 years of her working career to the Walsh Stores where she made many long time friends. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, John Barrett, on October 15, 1951, and they were blessed with 66 wonderful years together and 5 children, before he was called home ahead of her on October 30, 2017. In her free time, Nita enjoyed reading a good book, going to card club and occasionally trying her luck at the casino. Beyond a doubt, her family was the most important aspect of Nita’s world. She loved spending time with them, and all she ever wanted was for everyone to stay connected and make sure they knew how loved they were. Nita was a kind and gentle soul, a very classy lady who made everyone she met feel special. If we have heard it once we have heard it 1000 times, “your mom is so sweet, and what is her secret for looking so young?”. We are deeply saddened at losing Nita in our daily lives, but are grateful for all of the wonderful memories we have made throughout the years and will cherish forever.

Juanita’s family would like to thank Dr. Berman and Dr. Crista Weber, the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque for all of the outstanding care they have provided to Juanita and her entire family. We are also eternally grateful to our sister, Linda and her husband, Tom, taking such good care of mom and allowing her to stay in the home she so loved.

Thomas E. Kerkenbush
Thomas E. “Tom” Kerkenbush, age 66, of Platteville, WI, died on March 20, 2020, comfortably at home from complications of liver cancer. To honor Tom’s life, there will be no visitation or services at this time. A picnic will be held at the farm later this summer to celebrate his life. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Tom’s family.
Tom was born on September 29, 1953, in Potosi, WI, a son to Eugene and Theresa (Leibfried) Kerkenbush. He grew up enjoying the great outdoors and was an exceptional athlete, playing any sports he could when the opportunities arose. Just out of high school he landed a job at John Deere Dubuque Works, where he spent his whole working career, retiring after 30 years. Tom married Betty Brickl on his 20th birthday and after 46 years together they had 3 children and 3 grandkids.
Tom enjoyed the good life; fishing, hunting, cutting wood, fixing fence on the farm, gardening, and antique picking. His favorite past-time was hanging out with his family or friends and he faithfully spent the last few years in full wrestling Grandpa mode. He was a best friend to many and he will be greatly missed. Tom especially loved ice fishing for crappies, “May the vision of you ice fishing in your white boots and hover craft bring us some peace until we meet again”.

Richard T. Webster
Richard T. “Rick” Webster, 70, of Scales Mound, IL, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at Alden Park Strathmoor Nursing Home, Rockford, IL.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak a Private Family Burial will be on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at the Scales Mound Twp. Cemetery. There will be no public visitation or funeral. The Miller & Steinke Funeral Home of Scales Mound is serving the family.
Rick was born on April 15, 1949 in Scales Mound, the son of Marshall and Eleanor (Bourquin) Webster. He was a graduate of Scales Mound High School, the class of 1967.
Rick was united in marriage to Kathy Staver on September 23, 1978 at the Scales Mound United Methodist Church. He farmed with his sons, Jason and Jeff, nephew Tom and brothers Bob and Ron until Ron’s death. Rick enjoyed sports, especially the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed a good game of poker.
Surviving is his wife Kathy; two sons, Jason and Jeff; his brother Bob Webster; and mother-in-law, Phyllis Staver, sister-in-law, Sharon Webster all of Scales Mound; numerous nieces and nephews, especially Tom (Melanie) Webster & family and Tracy (Ryne Laity) Downs & family; his brothers-in-law, Tom (Patty) Staver, Danny Staver, Bob (Cathy) Staver and Ron (Melisa Pehl) Staver.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Eleanor; a brother, Ron Webster; uncle, Lester Webster; father-in-law, Joe Staver; a niece, Alicia Staver, great niece, Eleanor Grace Downs and great-great nephew, Oliver Webster.

Harvey V. Brandt
Harvey V. Brandt, 76, of Kieler, Wisconsin, died Saturday, March 21, 2020, at Stonehill Franciscan Services, Dubuque, Iowa. A private service will be held at Immaculate Conception church in Kieler with Rev. Bernard Rott officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A Memorial Service for the public will be held at a later date. Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is assisting the family.
Harvey was born on May 10, 1943, to Glen and Mary (Hentrich) Brandt in Jamestown, Wisconsin. He married Audrey M. Miller on June 7, 1986, at Lancaster, Wisconsin. Harvey was a worker his whole life. He started out working on the family farm and eventually ended up buying the farm and working there for many years. After farming Harvey went to work for Dubuque Insulation and Siding Company in Dubuque, Iowa. Harvey worked there for many years. After marrying Audrey, Harvey went to work for himself, he started his own business Harvey’s Repair. He put on many roofs and put siding on many houses over the forty plus years he worked for himself. Harvey and Audrey both were so proud of their two boys, Dan and Glen. Harvey and Audrey were always so pleased to hear from people that their boys were nice and caring boys. Audrey and he loved going for rides and going out for dinner. They also liked to welcome people into their home at Christmas, especially to see the Christmas Village. Harvey was also well known for always having a hobby. He especially enjoyed raising Checkered Giant rabbits for many years. Harvey also loved to be a joker and get people laughing. He was always known for putting a smile on anyone’s face he met. Harvey enjoyed and loved both of his grandsons, Rhett and Archer. He loved spending time and picking on them any chance he could get. Harvey will be very missed by his family and the community where he spent his whole life.
Survivors include his two sons, Daniel Brandt of Kieler, and Glen (Gretchen) Brandt of Dickeyville; two grandsons, Rhett Brandt and Archer Brandt; a sister, Millie (Gerald) Curtis of Potosi; two brothers-in-law, Jack (Pauline) Droessler of Dubuque, and Donald Lange of Dickeyville; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Brandt; his parents Glen and Mary Brandt; and two sisters, Eula Droessler and Irma Lange.
The family offers special thanks to all dad’s nurses and doctors at Stonehill Franciscan Services, the Finley Hospital, Hospice of Dubuque, and especially Dr. Viner for his many years in helping dad with his many health complications, as well as to all of those who have prayed and offered support for dad and us throughout his illness.

Freda M. DeLarm
Freda M. DeLarm, 88, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Thursday morning, March 19, 2020, at Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa, Iowa.
A private family graveside service and burial celebrating her life will take place on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello, Iowa. A private family visitation will be held at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Freda Mable Covington was born on August 28, 1931 in rural Central City, Iowa, to Julian Lester and Bessie (Moyer) Covington. She attended country school in Langworthy and then Monticello High School. She married Gerald “Jerry” DeLarm on March 25, 1951 in Monticello, Iowa.
Freda had first worked at a dime store in Monticello and then for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids and later Anamosa. She also farmed with her husband in Langworthy and lastly Monmouth until July of 2018 when they moved to Maquoketa.
Freda was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Monmouth. She was a very easy going and loving person. She loved her family, bowling, dancing, roller skating, flowers and gardening, birds, animals, camping and fishing. She always enjoyed socializing and they camped for over 30 years traveling all over the United States with friends and family.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Gerald “Jerry” DeLarm of Maquoketa, IA; children, Gary (Pam) DeLarm of Maquoketa, IA, Dale (and the late Marjorie) DeLarm of Delmar, IA, and Kathleen (John) Martin of Bernard, IA; a step-son, Brad (Janet) Petersen of N. Liberty, IA; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Eldon (and special friend Sylvia) Covington of Anamosa, IA; a sister Belva Covington of Monticello, IA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Galen and Lawrence, sisters Wilma, Hilda and Margaret, and a great-grandson Tyler.

Darlene D. McDonald
Darlene D. McDonald, 84, of Dubuque, died Thursday, March 19, 2020, at the Hawkeye Care Center in Dubuque.
Our dear wife, mom and grandma deserves a beautiful tribute. However, in this unknown time with the COVID-19 pandemic, having a public visitation is not possible. Please be with us in prayer. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Dubuque.
Darlene was born February 24, 1936, in Dubuque, the daughter of Robert and Helen Kunlow Schueller. On November 27, 1958, she married Francis J. McDonald at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta. Together they enjoyed 61 years of married life.
She was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of Church of the Resurrection.
Survivors include her husband, Francis; two daughters, Sheila (Brian) Bales of West Des Moines, Colleen (Greg) Fitzpatrick of Sherrill; two sons, Kevin (Connie) McDonald of Newhall, Bryan (Sara) McDonald of Dubuque; one son-in-law, Tim McLees of Cedar Rapids; her grandchildren, Nicholas McLees, Meghan (Miles) Wyatt, Eric McLees, Michelle (Chris) Payne, Christopher Hancock, Kevin Hancock, Michael Fitzpatrick, John Fitzpatrick, and Steven (Becca) Fitzpatrick; one great-granddaughter, Adrienne Wyatt; two sisters, Marian (Francis) Koetz of Centralia, and Ruth Leibold of Peosta; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Schueller of Epworth.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marybeth McLees, her parents, her father and mother-in-law, Patrick and Mathilda McDonald, one sister, Virginia Banwarth, three brothers, James, John and Wayne Schueller, two brothers-in-law, Donald Leibold and Harold Banwarth, and one sister-in-law Betty Schueller.
The family would like to thank the Hawkeye Care Center, Mercy Hospital Staff, and Fr. Phil Gibbs and the Resurrection Church family.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Church of the Resurrection.

William R. Hayes
William R. “Bill” Hayes, 64, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.

William Raymond Hayes was born on June 16, 1955 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Raymond Louis and Lois Ann (Wentworth) Hayes. He was a 1974 graduate of Maquoketa High School. He married Leslie Anne Dorsey on June 7, 1975 at Salem Lutheran Church in Spragueville, Iowa. Two children were born to this union, Robert and Charles.
“Bill” worked as a mechanic, first in Odessa, Texas, then Preston and lastly Maquoketa. Additionally, he was a partner in Bob’s Auto and B & G Towing, as well as owner of Hayes Auto.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. He was an avid tractor and antique machinery collector mainly of International Harvester products. He also enjoyed truck and tractor pulls and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Leslie Anne Hayes of Maquoketa, IA; sons, Robert (Christina Nie) Hayes of Sun Prairie, WI, and Charles of Maquoketa, IA; 2 grandchildren, Logan and Dylan; his father, Raymond “Rusty” Hayes of Maquoketa, IA; and a brother, Owen (Jean) Hayes of Monmouth, IA.
He was preceded in death by his mother Lois Ann Hayes on April 21, 2019.

Casey J. Welter
Casey J. Welter, 35, of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, March 17, 2020, in Platteville. A public Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. A private family service will be held. Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is assisting the family.
Casey was born on April 8, 1984, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Daniel and Ann (Foht) Welter. He graduated from Southwestern High School in Hazel Green in 2002 and from UW- Platteville with a degree in civil engineering in 2006. Casey worked at Delta 3 Engineering in Platteville.
Casey was an amazing person with the biggest heart, biggest dimples and the biggest smile. He enjoyed the wonderful blessings that he had; his friendships, his career, time with his canine companion Kip, and most importantly, his family. He was a member of the Community Evangelical Free Church in Platteville, where he worshiped and accepted God as his loving Savior. Casey left his mark on this world, but he wasn’t finished. So many things were left undone.
Survivors include his parents, Dan and Ann Welter, Hazel Green; a sister Kate (Todd) Welter, Reedsburg, two brothers, Ryan Welter, Hazel Green and Josh (Carla) Welter, Cuba City; his nieces and nephews, Marissa, Hailey, Hunter, Cailyn, Elizabeth and Jamison; his paternal grandmother, Marion Welter, Kieler, and his beloved dog, Kip.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold Welter, Casey Foht, and Kate and Art Bauer; his cousins, Brett Runde and Teri (Foht) Martin; and his uncles, Denny Foht and Joe Lattner.

Casey was always trying to find peace and was proud of the spiritual road he was taking. He wanted to be his best self for the world. Although this is not the path he planned for, he is now free.

Henry T. Pliner

Henry Thomas Pliner, age 102, of Dubuque, Iowa, and formerly of Fort Dodge, Iowa, was called home peacefully at 4:55 a.m., on Monday, March 2, 2020 at ManorCare. Henry was born on November 19, 1917, in Moorland, Iowa, son of James and Rose (Fiala) Pliner.
Henry graduated from Otho High School, in Otho, Iowa, Class of 1936. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy the day after Pearl Harbor was hit, and served on the USS Cecil J. Doyle, helping to rescue the survivors of the USS Indianapolis after it was sunk by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine on July 29, 1945. Henry married Helen M. Pessica in Norfolk, Virginia, on September 11, 1943. They would spend 38 years together, and have 2 children, before she was sadly called home before Henry on April 6, 1982. Henry was a dedicated employee who was a sales department manager for Sears in Fort Dodge, Iowa, for 30 years until his retirement in 1982. He was very active in his communities and was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Knights of Columbus. He also was a Founding Member of Czech Heritage Group, Fort Dodge, Iowa, and The American Legion Dubuque Post 6. Henry was fortunate enough to find love once again and married Marion (Martin) Tharp on December 1, 1986, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. They have been truly blessed with 33 wonderful years together, and countless memories made. We will truly miss Henry here on this Earth with us, and are extremely grateful for the 102 years he had here, definitely making this world a better place!

Henry’s family would like to thank the medical community of Dubuque, Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Caceres, Hospice of Dubuque nurse Kelli, and the ManorCare staff, residents and volunteers, whom Marion and Henry have come to love and appreciate.

Timothy R. Harkness

Timothy R. “Tim” Harkness, age 67, of Dubuque, was called home unexpectedly at 9:08 p.m., on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital. Tim was born on May 12, 1952, in Waterloo, Iowa, son of Robert A. and Rose L. (Herold) Harkness.
Tim graduated from La Porte City High School, Class of 1972. He would go on to join the U.S. Navy and honorably serve his country from 1972-1975. He was united in marriage to Cathy Parker on August 26, 1972, they would later divorce. Tim would be fortunate enough to once again find love, and would marry Sue Noack Freisinger on March 5, 2004. He was always a hard worker and was employed with the Waterloo John Deere Works for several years, until the lay offs during the 1980’s. During that time he went to work for several area farmers before moving to Grand Prairie, Texas, where he found work as a welder at Gifford Hill. When the economy rebounded, Tim returned to La Porte City and his job at John Deere until his eventual retirement. In his free time, Tim enjoyed fishing with his parents, chasing after that elusive hole-in-one on the golf course or sitting quietly reading his latest book by his favorite author, Louis L’Amour. He was also a wiz in the kitchen, his delicious meals and baked goods were appreciated by all. Family was definitely the most important aspect of Tim’s life. He loved spending time with Sue and the children, building Lego creations with his son, Tommy, and everyone knew the grandchildren were no doubt the apples of his eye. We are deeply saddened at losing Tim in our daily lives, but are thankful for the countless memories we have made throughout the years and will cherish forever.

Paul W. Reichen
Paul W. Reichen, 79, of Crestridge Care Facility, formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 18, 2020, at Crestridge.
Military services will be held at a later date due to the cancellation of all funerals because of the Coronavirus.
Paul proudly served the United States his entire life. He served in the Navy from 1960 – 1964.
Paul then served in the Naval Reserves from 1964-1966. Paul went on to work for the United States as a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service until he retired. These were
positions he was honored to have held.
Paul was an avid Los Angeles Dodgers fan, collected baseball cards and remembers fondly his trip to see the Los Angeles Dodgers play in the World Series in 1974.
He was born on December 30, 1941 in Iowa City, Iowa, son of Lena (Mettler) and Ernest Reichen.
Paul was the last of his family. He joins his parents, Ernest and Lena, as well as his three siblings, Ernest Jr., Mary Ann and Betty Reichen, in everlasting peace and happiness.
Paul would want to thank the staff at Finley Hospital, Crestridge and Jackson County Hospice for everything they have done to give him peace and comfort over the past several months.
