Beverly J. Henss
Beverly J. Henss, age 81, of East Dubuque, Illinois, completed her earthly journey on September 16, 2020, at home, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Beverly’s life, a public Celebration of Life will be held in Arizona in the spring. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Beverly’s family.
Beverly was born on July 12, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa, one of two daughters to John Link and one of three daughters to Mildred (Bemis) Link. At a young age, Beverly could be seen on both the runway and the silver screen. She received her big break in the film industry in the movie South Pacific, and thoroughly enjoyed her early years spending time with some of the biggest names in entertainment. Eventually, Beverly made her way back to the Dubuque area to be close to family and run Siefert’s in Kennedy Mall for many years. Later, she went on to own her Boutiques in Arizona before retiring. She was also naturally gifted in decorating and interior design and this carried into her personal life as well. Beverly was always ready for the festivities of some company over to the house, or a night on the town, but either way, Beverly was always dressed to the tee in the latest fashions. She was quite social, always full of sound advice, and beyond generous to a fault, but underneath it all; she loved being a grandma and great-grandma most of all. Her heart was tender, her hugs sincere, and her love never met a challenge it couldn’t overwhelm in the end. We will miss our beloved mother, grandma, great-grandma, sister, and friend, but we know that she was tired after fighting for years while confined within her mortal body and is now free from all of the pain which slowly tried to dim her bright light and beautiful spirit. Thank you, Beverly, for the excellent example of how a true matriarch should operate in this world and may the peace of the Lord be with you until we meet again.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Beverly include,
her loving children,

John H. Del Degan
John H. Del Degan, age 64 of Dubuque, Iowa, completed his earthly journey on July 25, 2020, at home, surrounded by his loving family. To honor John’s life, his Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2020, from 12 noon until 5:00 p.m. at the Barrington Lakes Pavilion, 11342 Lakeview Drive in Dubuque. All family and friends are welcome to join us and masks are welcome as well. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving John’s family.
John was born on June 24, 1956 in Toronto, Canada, a son to Enrico and Wanda (Zamalo) Del Degan. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Geology from the University of Waterloo in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada and did some prospecting and worked in an amethyst mine before moving to San Diego to begin the next chapter in his life. It was there that he met his beautiful bride, Pamela Saylor, and the couple was united in marriage on September 28, 2002. John has surely been called home much too early, but his years were thankfully abundantly full of all that is good in this world. John was currently investing his working hours with John Deere Dubuque Works, but he had worked in IT for the majority of his working career, primarily with IBM, and PB & J Consulting. But, anyone who knew John also understood that his heart always belonged in the field of Geology. He was blessed to have had many adventures of being set free into the wilderness to scout for new formations with only the hope of weekly support being air dropped in along the way. In earlier years he spent plenty of time in the dojo working on his martial arts and more recently was actively involved in supporting his daughter Rika, with her interest in English style horse riding and competitions. Building computers brought some satisfaction to his days as well, and he gladly provided the entire family computer consulting and advice. John lived his life to the fullest each and every day. His commitment to his family was undeniable and playing the role of husband and father was not only what he was made to do, but truly where he shined the most. John was a kind, gentle, genuine, and polished soul who understood that romance beat routine every day, and that sacrifice was as rewarding as facing any challenge which came his way. The world is definitely a lesser place today without John’s effervescent energy connecting so effortlessly with everyone he encountered, and thankfully he has left us with an amazing collection of memories to treasure through the years ahead. Thank you, John, for setting the bar so high and for continually role-modeling what a real man looks and acts like. May peace from your earthly battles be yours now and may you be safely kept in the Lord’s loving arms until we meet again. Job well done Thy good and faithful servant!
Those left behind to cherish the memory of John include,
his loving wife and partner of 20 years,
Pamela Del Degan, Dubuque, Iowa;
his adored daughter,
Rika Del Degan, Dubuque, Iowa;
his siblings,
Maureen Del Degan, Toronto, Canada,

Darel L. Hilkin
Darel L. Hilkin, age 78 of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on 9/14/2020 at home, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with pulmonary hypertension.
A private family service will be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Open celebrations of life will be held at a later date in both Dubuque, Iowa and Ligurta Station, Arizona.
Darel was born on November 11, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa, a son to Elmer and Marie (Steines) Hilkin. Darel’s early years were influenced by his father where he learned how to hunt, fish, work his hands, treat others with respect, and developed his strong work ethic as a child. Family, friends, work, and community quickly became the internal foundations he would carry throughout the rest of his years here on earth.
Family was always the number one priority in Darel’s life. Darel was always thankful for the day his beautiful bride, Ruth Gaul came into his life. They worked hand in hand together during their 56 wonderful years together. Their marriage was also blessed with 3 daughters, who would in turn bring 4 amazing grandchildren into their lives. Being a great husband, father and grandfather came natural to him.
Darel also enjoyed going camping with his family and going to Winston Cup races with his friends. He enjoyed snowmobiles for winter and boating at his dad’s cottage in the summer.
Darel worked as a welder for 32 years at John Deere. The work was hard, the years were rewarding, and friends he made with so many co-workers over the years were undeniably another source of satisfaction in Darel’s life. He would also use his career at Deere’s as a perfect launch pad to fulfill his drive to serve his friends and neighbors within the community. Darel sat on the UAW Local #94 Executive Board, UAW Pension Committee, Iowa State CAP Board, the John Deere Volunteer Fire Department and other various committees which kept him busy a lot of nights and weekends. He also worked with the local 94 scout troop high adventure and was financial secretary. This is where he taught his children the importance of serving others.
After retirement, Darel and Ruth would spend 20 years wintering in Ligurta Station, Arizona with both local and newfound companions from across the US and Canada. Once again, Darel continued making time to serve others a priority, by helping the VFW Auxiliary in Welton. He also enjoyed four-wheeling in the desert and in the mountains with his friends. Many times, you could find him gathering with friends and family at his site hosting happy hour. Darel even trained a road runner to take meat off his nose. He will have some ashes spread at a spot in the desert as well as in Dubuque so his buddies can stop and have a beer with him.
Darel would say that he lived a full life with no regrets; that he did his absolute best to be a positive light in the world around him. But, for those who know and love Darel, they would say the world is a better place because of him. His love, devotion, insights, personal drive and overall kind and forgiving heart are many of his gifts to his family and friends. As much as our hearts break today due to the physical absence of Darel from our daily lives, we are comforted by the lessons and values he taught us. Well done Darel. We miss and love you.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Darel include,
his beautiful wife of 56 years,
Ruth Hilkin, Dubuque, Iowa;
his 3 adored daughters,
Dawn Marie Hilkin, Ossining, New York,
Sue Hahn, Dubuque, Iowa,

his 4 treasured grandchildren,
soon-to-be Dr. Alyssa Hahn (Jordan Wetzel), Coralville, Iowa,

his 3 siblings,

Loren (Juanita) Hilkin, Dubuque, Iowa,
and Karen (Mark) Kuhle, Dubuque, Iowa;
along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary (Beauchamp) Mullen
Mary (Beauchamp) Mullen was born on June 19th in Sylvia Switch, Iowa, the 6th child of Gert Beauchamp and Jack Beauchamp.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will be 10:30 am Friday, September 18, 2020, at Church of the Nativity with Rev. Father Andy Upah as the Celebrant. Due to the current pandemic, mass is only for immediate family and extended family. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West. The mass will be live streamed on Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home’s Facebook page and will also be available to view later at www.hskfhcares.com. Please respect our current social distancing requirements. In accordance with the current Dubuque city ordinance, masks are required at mass. If you are not feeling well or are unable to attend, we encourage you to visit www.hskfhcares.com to send a message to Mary’s family.
Mary had a love for many things. We often joked that during a car ride, walk or conversation the word “beautiful” would be used in countless ways. She also loved the dozens of young people that she worked with at KMart over the years and likely had a positive impact on their lives. Mary also spent a number of years at both Klauer Manufacturing and the Dubuque Pack. She made the world beautiful with not only her spirit but her art, including nature scenes and rocks, that she painted.
Mary loved walking. A map of Dubuque hung in the home they built in Glen Oak with all the streets highlighted in yellow. Over the years her walking shoes visited each of them. For most of their lives, Mary and Abe loved spending time at Freddy’s Beach, Mississippi River and Leisure Lake and enjoyed a number of friends in each of these places. Dad and friends built a cottage at the lake in the 60’s close to a number of Mom’s Beauchamp brothers and sisters. These places remain for our family and friends at the center of our fondest childhood memories.
Mary had a way of lending a compliment or letting you know that she loved you and taught us all the value of caring for each other. Even in her last days Mary took the time to let us all know how much she loved us. Mary loved.
Mary is survived by her two daughters, Sandy (Dick) Butler and Lynn (Ralph) Schmitt; two twin sons, Mike (Donna) Mullen and Mark (Karrie) Mullen; her grandchildren, Andy (Shelly) Butler, Brian (Michelle) Butler, Jeff (Kristin) Schmitt, Jared (Lindsay Lavoie) Schmitt, Tim (Alli Hohmann) Schmitt, Chris (Gena) Mullen, Alanna (Hrisheek) Mullen, Rylee Mullen, Ryan Mullen, Kelsey Murphy and Zach Murphy; her grandchildren, AJ, Brian (Michelle) Butler, Payton, Ben and Abby Butler, Rory and Keegan Schmitt and one on the way.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John on December 26, 2013; her parents; three brothers and two sisters.
Our family will forever be in debt to Karrie and Mark for making their home hers during the last several weeks. This act of caring provided mom with the opportunity to pass with dignity and be constantly surrounded by loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial contributions to Hospice of Dubuque.
Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service is in care of the arrangements.
