Harold E. Schuster
Harold Edward Schuster, 89, of Dubuque, Iowa was called home peacefully at 7:55 AM on Monday, August 12, 2019 at Finley Hospital surrounded by his family. There will be a celebration to honor his life at a date to be determined in mid-September.
Harold was born in Saint Catherine’s, Iowa on August 13, 1929 and lived to celebrate his 90th birthday before passing one day shy of that milestone. He was the son of Edmund Schuster and Leona (Markus) Schuster who preceded him in death in 1935 and 1949, respectively.
Harry spent most of his youth farming near Saint Catherine’s and serving as a tour guide at Crystal Lake Cave in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The Cave – still in existence today, was a family discovery and business on the property of his grandfather Bernard Markus.
On September 10th, 1955 Harry married the love of his life Regina “Jean” (Duffy) Schuster, and together they spent the next 48 years raising their family. Sadly, Jean preceded him in death in July, 2003.
Harry spent 39 years at John Deere Dubuque works beginning in 1948 and finished his career as an Inspector. In 1953 his work at Deere’s was interrupted by a two year tour of duty in the US Army. He took early retirement in 1987 and spent his remaining years enjoying time with his family and friends.
Harry was an avid Cubs and Bears fan, enjoyed listening to a wide variety of music types, especially country and was a frequent visitor to the local music scene in Dubuque. He enjoyed cookouts, working in his backyard with his granddaughter Emma, dueling with the local wildlife over supremacy of his backyard and shoveling snow. Many were the times when he “extolled” the virtues of having to rise early to clear a path to his morning paper. And of course, playing euchre. There were not many gatherings or family celebrations that didn’t include Harry being sought out as a euchre partner. He was also an accomplished musician, having taken up the guitar at age 12. Throughout his life he frequently entertained his family with his guitar and harmonica playing.
Those left to cherish his memory include his four children, Thomas Schuster of Dubuque, Rose (Craig) Hartzell of Dubuque, David Schuster of Dubuque, and John (Melanie) Schuster of Yorkville, Illinois, grandchildren Elizabeth Baker, Emma Ruff, Sarah (Brad) Mohwinkle, Sophia Schuster, Lucas Schuster, and Bridget Schuster, great-grandchildren Liliana Mohwinkle, Kyanna Mohwinkle, and Alana Mohwinkle, his brother Allan Schuster of Platteville, Wisconsin, brother in law Fritz Stelpflug of Dickeyville, Wisconsin, his loving girlfriend Jeanette Hochberger, and many nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean, and his sister Madonna Stelpflug.
Harry’s family would like to thank the staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for his care during the past year, and the incredibly gifted and caring ER and fifth floor staff at Finley Hospital during his final days of life.

Tom warmed right up to being retired and embraced his new life as a full fledged homebody. He enjoyed watching movies and listening to classic rock, with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Stevie Ray Vaughn being some of his favorite artists. Tom was never seen without his trusty notepad and would constantly be writing things down so he wouldn’t forget them. While he cherished his privacy, Tom was also never one to turn down a friendly, but competitive, game of Euchre. However, more than anything else, Tom loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Pasquale Danna, Jr.
Pasquale “Pat” Danna, Jr., age 87 of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, completed his earthly journey on August 21, 2019 at Dubuque Specialty Care in Dubuque, with his loving family by his side. To honor Pat’s life, a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road, Dubuque, Iowa, 52002, with Rev. Thomas Heathershaw officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Pat’s family.
Pat was born on November 21, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, 1 of 8 children to Pasquale and Gerlanda (Piro) Danna, Sr. He would begin his full and abundant life being raised within a family who was continually driven to always be their best in their personal, professional and public lives. Pat eventually found his soul-mate, Nancy Baiardo, and the two were blessed to spend 58 wonderful years together, as well as raise 2 perfectly adored children along the way. Pat’s first love was always at home and all of his successes throughout his life were directly attributed to his desire to provide a comfortable, secure and promising life for his family. Pat was an electrical engineer by trade and devoted over 45 years of his working career to Western Electric in Chicago before retiring in 1996. He gladly offered them a few more years after retirement when they asked him to help lead a project occurring in Atlanta, Georgia. After completing his final mission with the company, Pat and Nancy discovered the opportunity to build their dream home in the hills of Hiawassee, Georgia. They enjoyed a decade of relaxing and enjoying life on their own terms and at their own speed, until health issues sadly brought them back to the mid-west to be closer to family.
Pat was so much more than a loving husband, father and stellar employee though; he was also a man who was always on the move enjoying some of the more honest and simple pleasures in life. Hunting and fishing were clearly top on the list as he made regular trips around Illinois, Wisconsin and up into Canada to do his part to help control the fish, deer, duck and pheasant populations in all 3. When he wasn’t out on the hunt, you could easily find him tinkering in the basement creating new fishing jigs, or reloading shells for the hunting club. He was also relentlessly devoted to the Knights of Columbus and obtaining his 4th degree was a badge of honor Pat always held true to in his daily life. Also, being a perfectionist at heart, Pat’s pride and joy was always on display for all to see in his yard and his meticulously kept landscaping. Beware and fair warning to any weed which may mistakenly assume that Pat’s keen eye wouldn’t catch it upon its immediate emergence. And finally, music. Pat was a fan of all thing’s opera, but even a little old country with Hank Williams, or his favorite Sunday album of military marches with bagpipers on parade could also fill the silent void in his day. Pat was truly a self-driven and multi-layered man over his 87 years and the legacy he leaves behind is one of exceptional excellence in all that you do and say. We will miss Pat deeply and dearly, but we are forever grateful that he and Nancy have discovered one another’s company again and that he now has someone to share his potato chips with for all of eternity. Thank you, Pat, for all of the productive puttering you found yourself enjoying while you were walking among us and may your rewards be true, sweet and beyond measure as you’ve clearly earned throughout your earthly journey.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Pat include,
his 2 children,
Anthony (Jodi) Danna,
and Susan (Scott) Nadeau;
his 4 grandchildren,
Jeffrey (Amy Alderman) Danna,
Andrew Danna,
Bradley (Amanda) Nadeau,
and Michael (Allison) Nadeau;
his 2 great-grandchildren,
Fang Fang Alderman Danna,
and Ryan Michael Nadeau;
his 2 sisters,
Josephine Danna,
and Mary Danna;
along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends and neighbors.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents; his beautiful bride, Nancy (Baiardo) Danna in 2015; his 2 brothers, Pasqualino Danna in infancy and Tony Danna; and his 3 sisters, Julia (Charles) Biardo, Jennie Danna and Rose Danna.
Pat’s family would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to all of his friends and neighbors at Sunset Park Place who welcomed him with open arms, along with the doctors, nurses and staff at Dubuque Specialty Care and Hospice of Dubuque for all of their comforting and compassionate care of Pat, and his family, throughout the last week.

Mary M. Hostert
Mary May Hostert, Age 91, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by love, with family near her, on Sunday, August 18, 2019.
“There is nothing in this life or in death that can separate us from the Love of God.” Dearest Mother, Jesus has welcomed you into heaven with His loving arms around you, and we know you are filled with peace and joy. You are loved by so many who’s lives you’ve touched and we will miss you profoundly.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 22 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Friday, August 23 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Rev. Father Steven Rosonke as the Celebrant. Interment will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Mary was born on May 1, 1928 in Dubuque, IA to her parents, Peter J. and Mary (Vitzthum) Schmitt. Mary and her husband, Karl Christopher Hostert were joined in marriage on April 18, 1953, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Dubuque, IA.
Mary grew up on the family farm, the youngest of seven children. She had a strong faith in God and loved her family. Mary love the outdoors. She was an accomplished horseback rider and raced at Silver Acres Race Track, which is now Flora Park. Growing up on the farm she learned the importance of a strong work ethic and doing things right. Mary was never one to be idle. Prior to getting married and having children, she worked at Hruska Kray Studios. Karl built Mary their home in 1956 where they raised son and daughter. While her children were growing up she spent a lot of time at the family farm helping her Mother with the farm and teaching her children, nieces, nephews, and the next generations of children to love the outdoors as she did. She was selfless and never hesitated to be there whenever anyone needed her. She was a natural caregiver. Up until 2 weeks before she died, she had babysat 3 generations of nieces and nephews, who adored her, thought of her more as their grandmother, and called her Aunt Mimi. Besides her love of horses, she loved Mickey Mouse, having been born the same year Mickey was created, and classic movies, “Gone with the Wind” being her favorite. She loved and had a strong faith in God, and she loved her family. The strength, courage and grace she showed in grief when she lost her beloved husband Karl on September 17, 1971, and faced raising 2 children on her own, was an inspiration to so many. She was a devoted and loving mother and she made sure her children had the best life she could create for them. She was creative, industrious, loyal, strong, independent, self-reliant, very classy and intelligent, able to discuss knowledgeably most any topic you could bring up. Mary was funny and had a great sense of humor. Even up until right before she died, she made family, friends and even strangers, laugh. Her beautiful blue eyes twinkling with laughter – she brightened their day, and that made her happy. Such was her courage and strength she was blessed with from her faith in God.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Deborah A. Merrill of Michigan City, Indiana, her grandson Zachary, (Malia) Merrill of Vancouver, Washington, and two great-grandchildren, Ada and Hannah – the youngest of whom we are thankful she was able to laugh with and hold for the first time a week before she died.
Besides her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son, Gregory Karl Hostert, her son-in-law, Dr. David A. Merrill, with whom she shared a special bond; three sisters, Armella “Bobbie” Kluck, Clara Hauber, and Evelyn Hillery; three brothers, George Schmitt, Bernard Schmitt, and her twin brother, Peter John Schmitt.
Mary was very close with nephews Michael Kluck, David Kluck, David’s wife Carol, their children and grandchildren, and her niece Jann Roshek. They were there for the good times and the bad. We all enjoyed many happy times and laughter together through the years. God has truly blessed us.
A special thank you to Pam Guzzo. A lifelong friend, who is always there with love, and all the support she can give.
God Bless and keep you, Mom. Thank you for loving and inspiring us. We love you and hold you in our hearts until we are united again in heaven.
A memorial has been established in Mary’s name, for Masses at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Dubuque IA.
