Dorothy Burkle
It is with great sadness to share that Dorothy (Scherbring) Burkle, a dearly loved wife and mother, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. She was 89 years old.
Born on June 14, 1936, to Abbie and Albert Scherbring (Petersburg, Iowa) Dorothy grew up on the family farm instilling in her a love for farming, working hard, perseverance and tenderheartedness. Dorothy was supremely dedicated to her family. She filled their lives with much love, care, laughter, an example of hard work, and mostly by being a faithful Christian. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 65 years, Delbert, and her five children Pat (Lisa) Burkle, Kate (Ron) Lueken, Margie Burkle, Anne (Brandon) Thomas, and Terry (Jennifer) Burkle, as well as her siblings Tom (Dianne) Scherbring and Alice (Harold) Schilling and in-laws Donald Burkle, Leander (Lavonne) Burkle, and Delores Burkle. Dorothy had 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Her children and family were her pride and joy. The only thing held in higher regard was her love for Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. She prayed daily; her favorite spot was being in church. Even in her last days, her faithfulness to Jesus did not waiver. We are reminded as shared in Galatians 5:22-23 that our life work is to glorify God; to produce fruits of the spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Romans 8:28 shares that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.

Janet L. Kenkel
Janet Louise (Chunat) Kenkel 95, of Asbury, Iowa, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on October 26, 2025, at her beloved memory care center Luther Manor Grand Meadows.
Visitation for Janet will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the Saint Columbkille Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Robert Gross officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa, is assisting the family.
Janet was born on December 2,1929 in Wauzeka, Wisconsin, the daughter of William and Anna (Bily) Chunat. She grew up with her seven sisters and two brothers on their family farm. She received her education and graduated from Prairie du Chien High School and immediately moved to Dubuque, Iowa as her forever home. It was here that she feverishly studied Catholicism and became a member of the Catholic Dioceses of Dubuque.
All of her life, Janet attended daily mass and devoted her life to the community and to prayer. In her early days in Dubuque, she met the love of her life, John “Jack” Dale Kenkel. On October 7, 1949, Jack and Janet were united in marriage at St Patrick’s Church in Dubuque, Iowa. They lived in Dubuque and raised their four children there until they moved to the small town of Epworth, Iowa. They eventually moved to a beef farm outside Epworth – this was their dream to own land and Cattle. Jack preceded Janet in death too soon on Sept 3, 1977.
Janet loved God, she was a woman of great faith and prayer. She took a strong stand for the rights of the unborn. This led her to being one of the first volunteers for the Dubuque County Right to Life answering phones, speaking to new moms and helping around the office. Janet continued to volunteer for over 16 years.
Another love of Mom, Grandma, Gummy was line dancing, and all the traditional dances like jitterbug, two step and Waltz. Janet performed dance exhibitions with her dance group at care centers in Dubuque entertaining residents well into her 70’s. She also had a love of music; she played piano by ear and loved to be joined in singing and making music and a few dance steps to accompany.
In her “spare” time she was a member of several ladies bowling leagues and was a frequent fixture at Riverside Lanes, her bowling pin average was 242 which made her in high demand. She also enjoyed being with family in a Dubuque rec volleyball league for several years. She was a natural athlete who loved a good competitive game!
Janet was a great mother and grandmother as her heart was always yearning for family gatherings. She was an avid card player and loved playing games from euchre to hearts to rummy, teaching and playing with all the family. Holidays were her very special “Family time” to celebrate one another; there was always great food, fellowship and a card game in the mix.
Her heart was also in her lush vegetable garden where she grew every vegetable and fruit she could, canning the organic foods to take her and her family through the winter. She proudly grew a substantial raspberry patch and would take the grandkids to eat the fruit off the vines and then to her vegetable garden with a saltshaker so they could dine on bright red heirloom tomatoes from the field. Gardening, nature and God’s creatures were her favorite pastime.
She also had a love for travel, she enjoyed traveling with friends across the USA as well as Czechoslovakia, Russia, Switzerland, Israel, Turkey, Germany and France.
Janet is survived by her three children: twin sons David Alan Kenkel, Douglas Alan (Sherri Mellon) Kenkel, both of Dubuque and Asbury; her daughter, Dori (Carey) Witt of Volente, TX.; twelve beautiful grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren as well as a dear sister-in-law, Barbara (Joe) Meyer.
She was preceded in death by her husband John “Jack” Dale Kenkel; her parents William and Anna; her eldest son Dale John Kenkel; her great grandson Zayn Michael Kenkel; seven sisters: Marian “Toots”, Dorothy, Leona, Patricia, twins Betty & Jean, Shirley, and her two brothers William and John “Bud”. Brothers-in-law: William Kenkel, and Robert Kenkel; sister-in-law Marlene Hellman and her father and mother-in-law, Frank and Irene (Schnee) Kenkel.
Our heartfelt gratitude to our dear friends and nursing staff at Luther Manor Grand Meadows who loved, laughed with and cherished mom with compassionate care until her death. We love the way you loved Janet through the six years she was with you. And in mom’s later years, Hospice of Dubuque was by her side caring for her daily. Thank you to all our precious caregivers!

Terrance J. McElmeel
Terrance J. “Terry” McElmeel, 62, of Dubuque, Iowa, left peacefully for his new journey surrounded by all whom he loved the most on October 26, 2025.
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Holy Family Church, New Melleray with a wake service to be held at 1:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Holy Family with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd, Dubuque, IA., is assisting the family.
Terry was born on February 2, 1963, the son of Robert and Judith (Pierrie) McElmeel. Terry graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1981. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Tricia M. Cook, on April 29, 1994, at Nativity Catholic Church. A devoted family man, Terry and Tricia shared 31 wonderful married years together. He was a proud and loving father to his four children—Courtney, Kendra, Mitchell, and Madison. One of Terry’s greatest joys in life was becoming a “Papa”. His endless love for his six grandchildren will continue to live on through his family. Terry was blessed to belong to a large and close-knit family, something he deeply treasured. He often said how much he loved being part of a big-hearted family, and he carried that same love into his friendships—many of which became family over the years.
Terry was a hard worker providing for his family. He dedicated 39 years to Andersen/Eagle Window and Door where he formed many lifelong friendships. Terry worked on countless side projects using his hands and completing all their house improvements, making their house into their home. Although not always willingly engaging in all of Tricia’s ideas, after the outcome he would always end up saying…”honey you were right”.
Terry was loved by all who knew him. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor, which could be a bit inappropriate at times, but always brought laughter to those around him. Anyone who knew Terry also knew he was one of the most dedicated fans of Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins. Terry was most happy spending time with family and friends “down at the camper” and cruising around on his customized Miami Dolphin golf cart signed by Dan Marino, while sharing beverages with family, friends, and camping neighbors. Terry was also always ready to take pontoon rides on the Mississippi River. If you were a frequent passenger, you could count on Terry requesting his favorite songs including ACDC, Down on Me by Jackyl and Slide It In by White Snake. Terry also enjoyed watching football games on T.V. with all the “boys” over the years and making it a goal to attend a Dolphin’s game each year at a different stadium. His passion for the outdoors was evident with his hunting adventures with the boys, going fishing, and the pride in becoming a landowner of a small parcel. While convincing Tricia that they should buy it and name it ‘TNT (Terry and Tricia) Acres’ for their love of AC/DC, although over the years, it somehow changed to be known as “Man Land.”
Some of their most treasured memories were made with their family and friends on their summer lake house trips, camping at different campgrounds, waterparks and zoo trips, and their vacation getaways near and far. Every vacation, every getaway, every adventure, and every shared laugh became a moment they’ll forever hold close to their hearts.
Terry is survived by his loving wife, Tricia McElmeel; his children, Courtney Gilligan (Adam), Kendra McElmeel, Mitchell McElmeel, and Madison McElmeel; grandchildren Eliza Robledo, Paisley Van Horn, Carter Smith, Milo, Rowan, and Quinn Gilligan; siblings Jill Henkes (Perry), Scott, Tim, Jeff (Stacey), Jay McElmeel; his mother-in-law Alice Cook; brothers-in-law Tom (Jean), Troy (LeeAnn), Todd (Kathy), Tony (Tanya), Tim (Jodi), Travis (Diana), Terry (Holly) Cook; sisters-in-law Tanya (Steve) Kluesner and Tara (John) Lynch; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Judith McElmeel; father-in-law Dale Cook; sister-in-law Patsy McElmeel; and nephew Cooper Cook.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Engleman, Tammi Noonan ARNP, and the oncology team, Dr. Caceres, Dr. Li, MercyOne Medical Center nurses, and Cristina from In-Home Care Connection for their care and compassion; as well as the immense support and love from their family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund for ‘No Stomach for Cancer’ will be established.

He and Jean were fishing fanatics who loved to share their catch with others. They also enjoyed spending time with the family at their cottage at River of Lakes in Bagley, Wisconsin. Family was always the most important part of Bennie’s life. He adored his wife and children and was an excellent role model of what a loving husband and father should be. Bennie was one of a kind, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Robert E. Morley
Robert (Bobby) Eugene Morley, 60, of Spring, Texas, formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away surrounded by his family on October 19, 2025, at HCA Houston Medical Center.
Bobby was born on September 22, 1965, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Eugene and Delores (Duffy) Morley. He spent more than 30 years as a dedicated manager, working for Family Beverage and Family Video from 1980-2000, and at Kwik Stop until 2012. After health issues led to his retirement from management, he continued to work at Kwik Star for an additional four years.
A lifelong Sertoma member, Bobby was known for his enthusiasm and commitment to community. He was also an avid bowler, competing in both men’s and mixed doubles leagues. His perfect 300 game was even featured in the Telegraph Herald article, “The Magical Christmas Ball.”
Bobby’s love for baseball began in childhood and grew into a lifelong passion for playing and coaching. He coached men’s slow-pitch softball, his daughter’s fast-pitch softball team, and his son’s Dubuque Reds baseball team. A devoted fan of Chicago sports, he cheered for the Cubs, Blackhawks and Bears. His love for the Dubuque Fighting Saints ran deep — he housed players, worked the penalty box, and even attended a Saints game on his wedding night. After moving to Texas to be near his grandchildren, he still followed the Saints from afar whenever he could.
Bobby was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing — especially bow hunting, “Deer Camp” with the guys, turkey hunting, and fishing trips. He was also a passionate Euchre player, earning the nickname “Bobby Diamonds.” He enjoyed playing in a card club with friends and teaching his kids and their friends how to play — though you had to have thick skin as his partner, because he never hesitated to point out a misstep. He loved sharing laughter and competition with his grandkids and especially hated being stuck with the “Old Maid.”
He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Delores Morley, his mother and father-in-law, Robert and Madelyn Smith, in-laws Dianne Breitbach, Mary (Dave) Wright, Jerry Smith, and Scott Smith.
Bobby is survived by his loving wife, Cathy (Smith) Morley; daughters Katie Morley and Kristy (Steven) Denlinger; son Bryan (Carrie) Morley; grandchildren Kaylee (23), Madalyn (20), Charleigh (10), Cree (6), and Zaye (4); sisters JeanAnn (Dennis) Althaus, Pam (John) Morgan, and Sue Hoppman; brothers-in-law Bob (Sandy) Smith, Lynn (Lynn Ann) Smith, Terry (Janice) Smith, Kevin (Ann) Smith, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Bobby will be remembered for his humor, pranks and deep love for his family and friends. He had a gift for making people laugh, teasing those he cared about, and giving everyone a nickname. He also greatly loved his dogs over the years, who were always by his side.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Dubuque Sports Complex on November 2, 2025, from 2 to 7 p.m.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the ICU medical team at HCA Houston Medical Center for the compassionate and loving care provided to Bobby during his eight weeks there.
