Harvey D. Breiner

Harvey D. Breiner, age 88 of Dubuque, completed his earthly journey on Friday, January 18, 2019, at home surrounded by his loving family. To celebrate Harvey’s life, a private family service will be held on Memorial Day Weekend with burial in the Asbury Cemetery. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Harvey’s family.

Harvey was born on July 18, 1930, in Peosta, IA, a son to Walter and Ruby (Stoltz) Breiner. He learned very early in childhood the value of family and hard work and continued to faithfully role model them both throughout his entire life. Harvey was a committed family man and eventually met his future bride, Mary Jane Morong. The courtship didn’t take long and on June 11, 1955 at St. Patrick’s Church in Dubuque, the two were married. They went on to be blessed with a beautiful family of their own, and 45 years together, before Mary was sadly called home ahead of him on August 14, 2000. He later married Lou Ann Jones, she survives.

In his early years, Harvey had proudly served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army before he returned home to begin his life in the working world at Hart Implement After only a few years there, a new opportunity had presented itself and he eagerly began his next 30 years of work with John Deere. In 1986 he decided it was time to retire and enjoy the remaining years of his life as he saw fit each day. He was lucky enough to be retired longer than he worked.

Harvey always enjoyed restoring tractors in his free-time, and the John Deere “M” was so meticulously done that not a single bolt escaped his very particular eye. He and his son-in-law, Del, also restored a 110 which is still being routinely checked over by his great-grandson, Isaac. In the fall, Harvey would help his son-in-law harvest the crops. Harvey also enjoyed his annual hunting trips out west with his friends (sometimes bringing home more Coors than venison) and he also found that a day on the water with a fishing pole in hand, or even a little time trying his luck at the Sizzling 7 machine, were all considered perfect ways to spend a little downtime. Many summer vacations were spent in Nisswa, MN that have ever-lasting memories. We will miss Harvey’s gentle soul more than he could know, along with his uncompromising organizational skills, but we are forever grateful for the legacy of love, kindness and commitment he leaves behind, and they will surely bring us comfort until we see him again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Harvey include,

his daughters,

Patricia (Cliff) Green, Dubuque, IA,

and Kathy (Delmar) Kuntz, Asbury, IA;

his granddaughters,

Stephanie (Jade) Doyle, Dyersville, IA,

and Becky Green, Dubuque, IA;

his great-grandson,

Isaac Doyle, Dyersville, IA;

his brothers,

Robert (Leta) Breiner, Graf, IA,

and Thomas (Arlene) Breiner, Dubuque, IA;

his sister-in-law,

Rita (Swede) Pulver, Bloomington, IA;

along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Mary; and his brother, Donald (JoAnn) Breiner.

Harvey’s family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque (especially Jeanette, Jan and Amy) for all of their wonderful care and support of Harvey, and his family.

Online condolences may be shared with Harvey’s family at www.tristatecremationcenter.com

He married Kathy Dawn Cox on October 4, 2014 in Bellevue, Iowa.

At an early age, Coach Fleming wanted to be a basketball coach and following his college graduation from Iowa State University, he took a job as a teacher with Central Community of DeWitt High School where he was named the Head Baseball Coach and Head Sophomore Basketball Coach. In 1967, he took a math teaching position in Maquoketa and became the Head Maquoketa Boys Basketball Coach. In his 33 years at Maquoketa, Coach Fleming and his teams won over 500 games, earned 6 state tournament appearances, 17 conference titles and 11 second place conference finishes. In 1983 after Maquoketa finished 2nd in the state tournament he was named Class 2A Coach of the Year. He touched the lives of students not only through his gift of coaching and teaching but also through his everyday lessons of preparation, organization and hard work.
