Jill was born on March 19, 1942, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of John and Ellen (Tschudi) Kerper.

Jill was born and raised in Dubuque, proudly attending St. Joseph’s Academy, going on to become a member of the first class to graduate from Wahlert High School. After graduation, Jill went to work with A.Y. McDonald for a few years, before meeting and marrying the love of her life. She was united in marriage to her soulmate, Tom Thilmany, on October 24, 1964, at St. Patrick’s Church, and they were blessed with 54 years together and 3 children. After the children were born, Jill happily became a full time wife and mother, staying home until the children were grown, then reentering the workforce with Siebe Studio for several years, until health issues caused her to slow down and take it easy. Jill was always a very active woman who enjoyed spending time outside, whether it be tending to her beautiful flower gardens, chasing after that elusive hole-in-one at Thunder Hills Golf Club, or hitting the bowling lanes hoping for a perfect game. She loved all Dubuque history, and was the proud keeper of her family genealogy, spending countless hours at the court house and library, tracing her roots as far back as 300 years ago. Family, beyond a doubt, brought the most joy into Jill’s days, she loved spending time with Tom and the children, and was thrilled when the grandchildren started coming along. We are deeply saddened at the loss of our beautiful, kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, she was truly priceless in our eyes, and the memories we have will be cherished in our hearts forever.

Those left to cherish Jill’s memory include

and her sister,
Judy (Maury) Niemer, Dubuque, IA.

Jill was preceded in death by her parents; her grandmother, Estelle McCurdey; and her brother, John (Gloria) Kerper.

Jill’s family would like to thank Dr. Wayne E. Richenbacher, for not only his surgical skills with Jill’s heart surgery, but for his continued support throughout the years, faithfully calling to check on her and see how she was doing. We also want to thank the wonderful staff of 4th floor surgical at Mercy Hospital, we could not have asked for a more caring and supportive group to help us through these past few days.

Sheila M. (Kuriger) Chambers

Sheila M. (Kuriger) Chambers, age 70, of Dubuque, was called home suddenly at 10:16 a.m., on Sunday, April 14, 2019, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital. To honor Sheila’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at the Church of the Nativity, 1225 Alta Vista Street, with Msgr. James L. Sheila attended Sacred Heart School in Monticello and after graduation went on to Clarke College, where she earned her degree in Sociology. She would put that degree to good use in daycare for over 39 years. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, James Chambers, on November 22, 1969, at Sacred Heart Church in Monticello, Iowa, and they would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. Sheila was a kind hearted, generous soul, who happily devoted most of her time to caring for others, especially her sister Pat who had Down Syndrome, and many, many day care children throughout the years. She volunteered her time with several organizations including the Ethics Committee at Sunnycrest Manor, the We Care Committee at the Church of the Nativity, helping out at Shalom Retreat Center with whatever was required, as well as being a well liked and well traveled DuRide driver. Sheila’s faith was very important to her and was evidenced by her long time membership with the Church of the Nativity. When she did find a little free time in her days, Sheila was quite content sitting at her sewing machine or craft table creating her next beautiful masterpiece. She was an avid Bears, Iowa Hawkeye and Notre Dame fan. Above all though, family was the most important aspect of Sheila’s life, they always gave her reasons to smile and she looked forward to any time they were able to spend together, especially if the grandchildren were involved. Our hearts are truly broken with the sudden loss of our dear, sweet wife, mom, grandma and sister, but take some comfort in knowing that she is at peace and reunited with all of her loved ones called home ahead of her.

William A. Probst

William A. “Bill” Probst, age 80, of Shullsburg, Wisconsin, found peace after a long, courageous battle with cancer, on Monday, April 8, 2019.

To honor Bill, a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 4th, 2019, at St Patrick’s Church Hall, 237 East Main Street, Benton, Wisconsin, where friends and family may gather anytime between 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Burial will be off the coast of the Pearl Harbor Naval Base at Honolulu, Hawaii, where full military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Navy. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Bill’s family.

Bill was born on November 26, 1938, in Benton, WI, son of Ambrose and Gertrude (Doyle) Probst. He was a man of diligence, vision and commitment to the task at hand. Following high school graduation from Benton High School, Bill proudly served his country by entering the United States Navy and was stationed in Hawaii.

Later, Bill earned a degree from UW-Platteville, and then went on to own and operate Probst Construction for many years, until his health forced him to retire. Bill has left a legacy of countless homes and buildings around the area and he continually strived to create each one better than the last. He was able to design the entire project in his mind from beginning to end, down to the smallest details.

Thankfully, Bill also understood the value of resting from our labors. He thoroughly enjoyed the game of golf, watching college basketball, playing cards and strumming tunes on his guitar. Many family gatherings were spent singing songs, with a round of euchre.

We would be remis not to acknowledge the love Bill had for his 4-legged canine companions. He spent his entire life with dogs by his side and his current pride and joy, Bailey, will miss him immensely. Although Bill was a skillfully sarcastic gentleman from time to time, Bailey allowed him to show his softer side, cuddling up next to him and brightening his world.

His love for his daughters and grandchildren was never in doubt. If they weren’t near him, you could be sure to hear him talking about them. Bill was known to have kept anything and everything handmade by his children and grandchildren. He was a quiet man who proudly processed life internally, but he spoke openly of his pride for his daughters and their families.

Bill’s loving family includes,

his daughters,
Rebecca (Scott) Bennett
Melissa (Matt) Pasch
and Sarah (Matt) Blankenheim

his 7 grandchildren,
Jake, Ella, Wilton, Wyatt, Kate, Chloe and Charlie

his sister,
Mary (Skip) Lawrence

his brother,
Donald Probst

along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and 3 brothers, Paul, Dave and Rich.

A William A. Probst memorial fund has been established.

Bill’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Memorial Hospital, Upland Hospice and the U.W. Madison Hospital & Clinics for all of their professional, sincere and compassionate care of Bill through these most difficult days.

Ronald A. Hiris

Ronald A. Hiris, 49, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Long Island, NY, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in his sleep on April 8th, 2019.

Ron’s life will be remembered from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 13th, 2019 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. with Deacon Bill Biver officiating.

Ron graduated from Herricks High School in New York in 1987. His love for carpentry and construction was evident early on, as he held various positions in the field in New York. Over time, he became a gifted master carpenter in the Long Island area, eventually leading his own crew.

Ron married Sandra Krause of Galena, IL, and relocated to Dubuque in 2005. He soon started working for Queck Capital Management, where his combination of carpentry skills, creativity, and organization helped him advance to Operations Manager. In this position, he designed and managed countless home renovations in the Dubuque area. He continued in this role for GRTD Rentals, his employer at the time of his passing.

Ron often said work was a game of chess that he loved playing. He was a problem solver who could make anything run smoothly. He was always on the front line meeting every challenge – no matter how nasty – and amassed an interesting collection of stories in the process. He took great pride in his crew and valued the relationships he developed with the many contractors he worked with over the years.

Ron will be deeply missed by his beloved family; children Jacob, 17, Sara, 11, of Dubuque; parents, Lorene and Hermann Hiris of Fort Salonga, Long Island, NY; brothers, Robert of Kings Park, NY, and Peter of Henderson, NV; four beloved nephews-Jack, Max, Wyatt, and Matthew Hiris and beloved friend Todd.
