Kenneth L. Pickel

Kenneth L. “Ken” Pickel, age 85, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on September 29, 2023, at UnityPoint Finley Hospital while surrounded by his loving family.  To honor Ken’s life, a Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 3685 County HHH in Kieler, WI, with Rev. Bernard Rott officiating.  Full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League along with the active U.S. Army funeral detail following the service.  Per Ken’s wishes, there will be no visitation.  Family and friends are invited to join in food and fellowship at Ken’s Celebration of Life following the mass at Burkey’s Bar and Grill, 10638 Key West Drive in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Ken’s family.

Ken was born on October 4, 1937, in Jamestown Township, WI, a son to Rudolph and Gertrude (Stumpf) Pickel.  He grew up with a strong work ethic and a love for family, friends, and community that never wavered.  After honorably serving his country with the U.S. Army, Ken returned home and eventually met and married the love of his life, Elizabeth “Betty” Burbach.  The couple was blessed with many wonderful years together and 4 children of their own to raise and nurture.  Ken spent over 41 faithful years with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Dubuque as he provided for his family at home.  He was the epitome of the American Dream as he started his career with a delivery route, moved into maintenance, and in time became the General Manager before finally moving into retirement.  His company loyalty ran deep and it was well known among his family and friends that if Ken has the opportunity to visit a restaurant or establishment who unfortunately did not serve Coca-Cola, it was very likely that he would be ordering a water and that was going to be his last visit to that location moving forward.

But, Ken was so much more than a company man.  His devotion to his community was continually on display as well.  He volunteered with countless organizations and sat on the boards of Albrecht Acres, Apple Canyon Lake, Moose Lodge, Holy Name, Jamestown Fire Department, as well as the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce just to name a few.  He also generously gave his time and talents to countless events where the U.S. Veterans were involved, whether through fundraising, or simply providing the support and extra effort where it was needed most.  Ken always enjoyed the outdoors as well and any time spent at Apple Canyon, camping over in Bagley, or even a relaxing day of hunting or fishing was considered to be a successful day in his eyes.  And we can’t forget his love for a good euchre hand, or the opportunity to harass any unfortunate Bear’s fan in the vicinity, especially when his Packer’s and Badger’s were winning.  Ken was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather above all and his ability to make friends wherever he went was inspiring to say the least.  The world is truly a much smaller and lesser place today without Ken’s love and light shining brightly within it.  The legacy he leaves behind will definitely help to heal the broken hearts he leaves behind as well in time and we are thankful that he is now entirely free form each and every earthly struggle that he has been facing with such bold bravery over these last years.  Thank you, Ken, for being the best you anyone could ever hope for and may the abundance of memories which you leave behind provide the healing we seek until we all meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Ken include,

his loving bride of 63 years,
Elizabeth “Betty” Pickel, Dubuque, IA;

his four children,
Jeffrey (Katie) Pickel, Martelle, IA,
Mark (Kathy) Pickel, Hazel Green, WI,
Rhonda (Roger) Schultz, Cary, IL,

Brianna Pickel, Iowa City, IA,
Emily (Troy) Hutchinson, Waverly, IA,
Alli Pickel, Hazel Green, WI,
Amber Pickel, Hazel Green, WI,
Ashley (Sam) Baker, Fitchburg, WI,
Alicia (Zachary) Plancich, Naperville, IL,
Brittany (Luke) Holmgren, LeGrange, IL,

Paul J. Ehrlich

Paul J. Ehrlich, 87, of Dubuque, passed away September 28, 2023 at home surrounded by his family.

Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00p.m., Monday, October 2, 2023 at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, Dubuque, with a prayer service at 2:30p.m.. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30a.m., Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Rev. Steven Garner officiating and Deacon Loras Weber concelebrating. The funeral mass will be livestreamed at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery where full Military Honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Paul was born on February 16 during the snowstorm of 1936. He was the fourth child of Fred and Thelma (Bahl) Ehrlich. He was raised on the family farm in Dubuque – the same farm in which he took his last breath.  He grew up with 12 brothers and sisters, learning the value of honesty and hard work; creating a lifetime of stories and love of the land that he shared with his children and grandchildren.

Paul served our country in the National Guard from 1957-1963 where he was in the 34th Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.

Following a whirlwind courtship and a Valentine’s Day engagement he was united in marriage to Bernice (Naumann) Ehrlich on October 11, 1960. The couple shared nearly 63 years of marriage together; raising six children and always welcoming countless friends and family to their home.

Paul began milking cows at age 9 and didn’t stop until age 82. With this, he became involved in 4H and the Dubuque County Fair. He proudly served as a club leader for 20 years, a Dubuque County Fair Board Director for 18 years, and a member of the Extension Council for many years.  He was inducted into the Dubuque County 4H Hall of Fame in 2013.  Just this past August, he was inducted into the Iowa 4H Hall of Fame, culminating decades of commitment to the 4H program.

Paul enjoyed reading – telephone books, tabloids, romance novels and everythng in-between.  He had a green thumb and spent many hours in his gardens; always sharing the results.  He was also a fantastic baker, never using a recipe but always adding his secret ingredient – which was more sugar.

Dad was always good for a twenty, bringing newborn animals into the house (much to Mom’s disgust), drinking Pepsi, hitting the slots at the casinos, and swearing.  If he called you a made-up swear word, it was a term of endearment.  If it was an actual swear word – not so much. He shined in his role of grandfather and great-grandfather; spoiling each one with that wonderful gift of time – and sugar.

Paul is survived by his wife, Bernice; children, Laura (Bob) Schilling, Brian Ehrlich, Michael (Cindy) Ehrlich, Karen (Todd) Gronau, Kathy (Jeff) Kunkel, David (Tonya) Ehrlich; grandchildren,  Jim (Courtney), Jeffrey (Megan), Courtney (Eric), Jacqueline, Alexis (Cole), Sarah (Ben), Megan, Tim, Seth, Elizabeth, Jonah, Samantha (Tristen), Nathan (Caitlin); great-grandchildren, Rhett, Ada, Parker and a baby boy on the way. He is also survived by his siblings, Barbara Gaul, Dolores (Cletus) Ambrosy, Norbert “John” (Nancy) Ehrlich, Marilyn (Richard) Borgerding; in-laws, Lois Ehrlich, Linda Ehrlich, Richard Thoma, and Harold (Madonna) Nauman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-laws Edward & Anna Naumann, siblings, Tom (Roslyn) Ehrlich, Ina (Robert) Hohmann, Frances (Carl) Pfeiler, Mark Ehrlich, Fritz Ehrlich, Ethel Thoma, Daniel Gaul, Ernest Ehrlich, Vince (Diane) Ehrlich; in-laws, Marie (Norb) Dupont, Lorraine (Vern) Weber, Rita (Earl) Kintzle, Ruth (Lester) Weber, Doris Ann (George “Nicky”) Wolf, and Baby Boy Naumann in infancy.

Paul’s family wishes to extend a most heartfelt thank you to the staff at Hospice of Dubuque, especially Kim for the wonderful care given to Paul during his last days. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorial contributions can be given to Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens or Hospice of Dubuque.

Rest easy, Dad.  We hope you were greeted at the Golden Gates by a nice, cold Pepsi and that elusive White Elephant Dog.

Barbara A. Mullady

Barbara A. “Barb” Mullady, age 65, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on September 27, 2023, at UnityPoint Finley Hospital in Dubuque with her loving family by her side.  To honor Barb’s life, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Barb’s family.

Barb was born on July 21, 1958, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Bernard “Bernie” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Beauchamp) Mullady.  She was born and raised in Dubuque and enjoyed the opportunity to be surrounded by family and friends throughout her entire life.  Barb devoted over 27 years of her working career at the Diamond Jo Casino.  She spent her days visiting with her co-workers as well as the folks who came in to test their luck on any given day.  In her free-time, Barb was always up for a little retail therapy and antiquing whenever possible, or catching the next great rock concert that made it’s way into the area.  She also enjoyed spending a little time in her gardens, as well as warm summer days out at Leisure Lake.  Her greatest joy though was surely found in following her grandkids around and attending their school programs and sporting events.  Barb treasured her loved one’s most and any hour spent by their side was considered to be time well spent.  We will miss our dear Barb moving forward, her quite contentment and ability to simply be in the moment, but we know that her earthly battles have been fought with diligence and now she must rest from those trials.  Thank you, Barb, for leaving behind plenty of memories to help ease the pain of your absence and may you find eternal peace until we meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Barb include,

her two loving children,
Joshua “Josh” (Victoria) Mullady, Hendersonville, TN,
and Kaylyn “Katie” (fiancé Justin Paisley) Mullady, Dubuque, IA;

her three adored grandchildren,
Cody “C.J.” Springer, Jr.,
Annabella Paisley,
and Xzayvior Paisley, all of Dubuque, IA;

her brother,
William “Billy” Mullady, Bernard, IA;

her niece and nephew,
Alanna Mullady,
and Bernie (Katie) Mullady, Wauconda, IL;

her great-nephew,
Sterling Mullady, Wauconda, IL;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Betsy Mullady.

Barb’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Finley Hospital, especially Diane, for all of the professional and compassionate care they have provided both Barb and her family.

In lieu of flowers, a Barbara A. Mullady memorial fund has been established.

Online condolences may be shared with Barb’s family at www.tristatecremationcenter.com
