Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday August 22nd, 2023, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday August 23rd, 2023, at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.
Paula was born on October 12th, 1940, in Deadwood, South Dakota, daughter of David L. and Mary (Andresen) Smith. She married Joe Zwack, her high school sweetheart, on September 1st, 1962, at Church of the Nativity in Dubuque. They had three children: Laura, Joey, and Sharon. Paula was a very happy person, maybe because she was loved by so many people. She and Joe often remarked about the fact that they were so lucky to have such a wonderful family and friends. There was little she couldn’t do if she wanted to do it. She was truly a master of all trades. After graduating from the Visitation Academy in 1959 she embarked on a very active life.
She was an artist, she was a realtor for decades, she owned and operated a sewing machine business for a decade, she was a farm gal for about a decade, and she was always the most wonderful homemaker. In her younger days she loved to swim, walk, dance, go on motorcycle trips, play cards, read, follow sports teams, do all sorts of fun and crazy stuff with her many friends — and sew [when several of her works were (reluctantly for her) entered into international sewing competitions she won grand prizes]. Many friends and relatives will be able to cherish her sewing gifts for years to come. A few things she sewed: her daughters’ wedding dresses and all the bride’s maids’ dresses, her children’s clothing, doll clothing, curtains, drapes, leisure suits (remember them?), quilts, wall hangings, innumerable costumes for people of all ages and all occasions, gag sewing projects, prom dresses, first Communion dresses, etc. Her loving family meant everything to her at all times, and her children and grandchildren were her constant companions, whether they were with her at the moment or not.
Paula is survived by her husband of 61 years, Joe, her children Laura Coleman, Joseph “Joey” Zwack and Sharon (Kent) Coleman, grandchildren Andrew (Kinzie), Emma, Elizabeth, Claire (fiancé Matt Kass), and Grace, siblings Rita (Bob) Murray, Charlotte (Jim) McCoy, Christine (Ray) Sweeney and Rachel Gerber, sisters-in-law Roberta “Bobbi” Smith, Kathleen (Bert) Peron, Margo (Tom) Kurtz and Ellen Zwack, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers George and David Smith, stillborn grandchild Benjamin Coleman, stillborn great-grandchild Jackson Benjamin Coleman, mother-in-law Magretha Zwack, father-in-law Joseph A. Zwack, and brother-in-law Bill Gerber.
The family gives a warm thank you to Hospice of Dubuque, especially Melissa, Cortini, and Angelia. In lieu of flowers, any donations may be given to charities of the donor’s choice in Paula’s name.

Dick was born on August 13, 1949, the second son to Paris and Dorothy (Hughes) Cogdill. Dick grew up with a strong will yet possessed a gentle spirit when required. He was a welder by trade, which eventually led him into a mechanical role where he traveled to over 75 countries around the world to add his time, talents, and expertise to training workers and installing and repairing road and mining equipment. When Dick was back home in-between work trips, you could find him polishing his skills at the pool table for his next tournament, working on his next acquisition for his gun collection, or enjoying a ride on his Harley (especially on his annual trips to Sturgis). More recently, he enjoyed spending time with his beloved dogs or fishing from his boat at Leisure Lake. He loved to tell stories and to sing in his rich, deep voice, particularly his favorite country songs. Dick took each day in stride and loved to tease and kid around. He was often described by his siblings as ornery and stubborn, but also loving and generous. He went through some incredibly hard times, but also some good times. One of his favorite quotes was: “You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.” We will miss Dick dearly and his physical presence in this world will surely be felt by all who knew and loved him. Thank you, Dick, for not only living life on your own terms, but for allowing those around you to participate as well. May you now find eternal peace from your earthly battles and we will keep your legacy alive until we meet again.

Dan Nissen
On August 10th, 2023, Dan Nissen, 71, of Cuba City, WI, and previously of Galena, IL, and Waterloo, IA passed away peacefully during his sleep at home with his beloved wife Laura at his side. The man who built a foundation of warmth and empathy, who preferred kindness and gentleness to all else was the rock of our family.
Those who treasured him on earth are and will treasure his memory with continued love are his loving wife Laura Nissen (Cuba City, WI previously of Galena, IL), his beloved sons, Mark Nissen (Gilbertville, IA) and Andrew Nissen (Clive, IA), daughter-in-law, Lindsey Nissen (Gilbertville, IA), granddaughter, Kendra Nissen (Gilbertville, IA), granddaughter, Kloe Nissen (Gilbertville, IA), father-in-law, John MacCall (Moline, IL), mother-in-law, Linda MacCall (Moline, IL), brother-in-law, Scott MacCall (Bozeman, MT), sister-in-law, Susan MacCall (Bozeman, MT), his dear friend, Chris Kerkel (Dickeyville, WI) and his new “bucket list” kitten, Beasie. In addition, Dan was blessed with so many additional friends, relatives, and neighbors. There are too many to name, but Dan deeply loved them all.
Dan was pre-deceased by his parents, Marie and Warren Nissen, and his nephew, Sam Nissen.
Dan Nissen was born in Waterloo to Warren Floyd Nissen and Marie Cecelia Gallagher Nissen in January 1952. Many of his fondest memories were growing up in the sixties with his band of brothers Jim (Cindy) Nissen and Jeff (Kandi) Nissen, friends, family, and neighbors. Dan attended Columbus High School and it was there that he developed his love for sports and the community and camaraderie that came with working with a team to accomplish a goal. As his passion for sports expanded, it was evident that he was gifted at track and field. After graduation from Columbus, Dan enthusiastically decided to attend Iowa State University to continue his track career. By far his greatest joys in life were his twin boys, Mark and Andrew. They too grew up in Waterloo and were blessed by Dan and their mother, Kim. Dan and Kim married in September 1976 in Waterloo. Mark and Andrew were born in October 1983. Dan’s love for Mark and Andrew was and is today simply immeasurable. Dan and Laura married in October 1990 in Ellicott City, MD and shortly thereafter established their home of well over 30+ years in Galena. Dan was a quiet man who loved nature and animals and loved to be at home. Dan also had a keen sense of adventure and enjoyed travel. God was inherent in him as he reflected the love of God throughout his entire lifetime. He loved working for the team at Runde Chevrolet and worked there until early retirement due to health challenges.
The Furlong Funeral Chapel of Galena is assisting the family with arrangements. Dan has requested that we not hold formal community services but honor his life by holding a loved one a little closer, loving the earth a little more, or offering generous kindness to a senior, a child, or an animal. However, if you honor him, please honor him with love. So, for now, and until we see you again…rest in peace, Dan Nissen. We love you with all our hearts and can’t wait to see you again. It gives us such great peace to know that you are joyful and healthy again and reunited with your parents and pets, and blissfully in the arms of Jesus.

Willie worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years and retired from there in 1990. Before he joined the Holy Cross Fire Department in 1967, he served for two years on the New Vienna Fire Department. He got involved because was young and wanted to belong to something.
Over his tenure he served as assistant chief for 5 years, as chief for 23 years, Chairman of Civil Defense/Emergency Management and was also on the Dubuque County 911 Board for 12 years. He served the Holy Cross/NBV Fire and EMS for a total of 44 years, retiring in 2011.
He received the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 2009, a Certificate of Recognition from the Iowa State Senate in 2011 and was inducted into the Dubuque County Fire Association’s “Hall of Flame” in 2012. In addition to his service in the fire and EMS realms he volunteered in the Holy Cross community with the park, parish, and snow removal. This morphed into helping many others clear their driveways. If anyone needed a hand, they could count on Willie.
Willie was a good friend who thoroughly enjoyed having coffee, playing cards uptown, dancing to a waltz or polka, going on car cruises, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
