Larry worked as a welder at John Deere Dubuque Works and retired in April 1996 after 32 years of service. After retirement, he worked part-time at Lacoma Golf Course as a greens keeper. He had a great love for his family and friends and was frequently referred to as a “big teddy bear”. The “big” came in scaring away any boys that would come to the house and “teddy bear” for being a softie to anyone who knew him. Larry had a great love for animals, particularly his beloved dogs, Paco and Paco II.
In their early years of marriage, Larry and Karen enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River, participating in bowling leagues and softball … Larry coaching and Karen playing. As their kids got older, they spent their summers camping at Wildwood Acres. He was also feared at family reunions for continually taking home the horseshoe tournament trophy until his son took over. Retirement brought them to The Villages, FL, where they enjoyed golfing and get togethers with the numerous friends they made.
Surviving Larry is his wife of 60 years, Karen; one son, Daren (Kris) Davis, Galesburg, IL; two daughters, Leah (Dan) Hefel, Dubuque, IA and Teri (Tom) Straka, Peosta, IA; 10 grandchildren, Alex Vaassen, Tyler Adam, Dalton (Sydney) Davis, Logan Davis (Marisa Miller), Riley (Nick) McLaughlin, Trent Hefel, Russ Hefel (Taylor Cota), Jamie Straka, Jesse Straka and Drew Straka; and one great grandchild, Callum Davis. Loras F. Schuster
Loras F. Schuster, 86, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on April 10, 2025, at UnityPoint Finley Hospital ICU, surrounded by family and friends, following a very brief illness.
Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Family Catholic Church Cemetery in New Melleray. Military honors will be accorded. A livestream will be available on the Leonard Funeral Home FaceBook page.
Loras was born on April 11, 1938, in rural Bernard, Iowa, to William and Clara (Schneider) Schuster. He received his early education at a one-room schoolhouse at St. Joseph’s Prairie until the eighth grade, later earning his GED in 1972.
Loras married Mary Lois Alt on September 6, 1969, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Shullsburg, Wisconsin.
He completed Army Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood in 1961 and enjoyed it so much that he stayed until 1963, learning to operate large trucks—skills that served him well throughout his life.
Over the years, Loras held a wide variety of jobs. He hauled milk with his brother Bill, worked as a route driver for DX, drove dump trucks during the flood of 1965, operated tow trucks for both Al and Burt Steve, and was later employed by Flexsteel Furniture before retiring from Barnstead Thermolyne.
After retirement, Loras regularly attended the Lifetime Center on Stoneman Road, enjoying lunch with friends and playing euchre every Wednesday, forming many cherished friendships. He especially enjoyed morning pancakes on the deck with family friend Debbie.
Loras was well known for garage sales with his wife Lois and for canning tomato juice with Liz Lynch. He enjoyed baking until 2021. He also took pride in washing dishes by hand, mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, and hosting neighborhood block parties. Loras loved to sit outside on warm, sunny days, watching life go by and reminiscing about time spent with family and friends. He looked forward to Friday catfish dinners from Jack’s Chicken Palace and Sunday breakfasts at Sunshine Café on Central in Dubuque. He also cherished his many daily cups of coffee.
The Schuster home was a favorite gathering place for Lois’s family, especially at Thanksgiving. Loras helped prepare everything from scratch—turkey, dressing, slush, grasshoppers, and all the fixings. New additions to the family always remarked on the warmth, delicious home-style cooking, and the open-armed welcome. Weekend trips to the in-laws often ended with the sons-in-law rewarded with dishwashing duties after a hearty meal.
Loras adored his Alt and Schuster nieces and nephews, and that love was warmly returned. He had deep affection for his siblings and in-laws as well.
As his health declined in recent years, Loras chose to remain in the comfort of his own home. He was lovingly cared for by his son Greg, under the watchful eye of Buddy, with additional support from the Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging – Caregiver Program, which arranged transportation to the Lifetime Center.
Loras is survived by his daughter Kathy (Tony); son Greg; brothers William and Joseph; beloved fur baby Buddy; and many extended family members on both sides.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Clara; his beloved wife, Lois; his father-in-law, Dominic Alt; mother-in-law, Leona (Ripperda) Alt; and numerous family members on both sides. Loras also deeply mourned the loss of his fur babies—Duchess, Jake, and Bell.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the following healthcare professionals: Dr. Salas, Dr. Kahn, Dr. Martin, Janet Laban, Dr. Wack, Dr. Markham, nearly every ER nurse, Paramedic Mike, ICU nurses Tammy and Amy, Palliative Care nurse Diane, clergy member Ethan, and Alice from St. Columbkille’s.

Loras had two final requests: Please dress casually, and don’t be sad at his passing. Instead, celebrate his life.

Thomas A. Denlinger
Thomas A. “Tom” Denlinger, age 67, of Cuba City, WI, completed his earthly journey on April 11, 2025, at Stonehill Care Center while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Tom’s life, a private family Celebration of Life is being held. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Tom’s family.
Tom was born on July 9, 1957, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Virgil and Norma (Mulligan) Denlinger. He was a truly honorable man who understood quite clearly the importance and value of family and did his best each day to remind all of them of this reality. Tom invested his working career with the family business, Denlinger Insurance, and enjoyed every new client who came into his life while working alongside his family and friends. Tom possessed a strong work ethic and always gave 110% in all that he did.
For those who knew Tom well, it was always evident that his family was a top priority in his life also. Many would refer to him as his sons’ greatest fan. Tom never passed up an opportunity to spend some quality time in the blacksmith shop, or add a little hunting and fishing into his day, but truth be told, when it came to his family time, sports was where his heart really shined. Tom was known for his charge whistle by most fans in the area as Trent and Theo rose through the ranks throughout their youth, but in time as he ventured out to cheer on Trent and his teammates at Badger football games, and eventually following his son Theo into playing with the White Sox and Red Sox, it almost appeared that his cheering grew even stronger and louder right along with the size of the crowds. You could not find a more loyal supporter of his family and all of their adventures in life than Tom. With the love of his life, Tina (Meyer), by his side, the boys were sure to have their own personal cheering section wherever life took them.
It’s difficult to imagine losing Tom so early in life and after his courageous battle with cancer over the last 5 years, we could see his weary battle worn spirit beginning to stumble. He never gave up, never surrendered and fought with bravery until the very end, but we know that his greatest fear wasn’t actually passing, but rather having to leave us behind for now. Our hearts break with a permanent scar that it seems will never mend as we face the days ahead, but we know and trust that Tom is finally at peace today and his legacy will thankfully live on without hesitation in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved him. Thank you, Tom, for leading by example, teaching what should be taught, and never leaving your position at the helm of our family for even one second. May the Lord hold you safe and securely in His loving arms until we meet again and may our pain find peace in time through the abundance of wonderful memories you’ve left behind.
Those left to cherish the memory of Tom include,
his loving wife,
Tina Denlinger, Cuba City, WI;
his two sons,
Trent (Sam) Denlinger, Platteville, WI,
and Theron “Theo” (Jess) Denlinger, Cuba City, WI;
his adored granddaughter, Teah Denlinger;
his siblings,
Jim (Sue) Denlinger, Dubuque, IA,
Lynn Denlinger, Crystal River, FL,
and Bill (Carol) Denlinger, Cape Coral, FL;
along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents.

James A. “Jim” Koopmann, 72, of Dyersville, Iowa passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on April 10, 2025 at University of Iowa Hospitals.
Jim was born on December 24, 1952 to Alfred “Fritz” and Evelyn “Pearl” (Kruse) Koopmann.

Jim logged countless country miles with BARD and later found joy in revisiting those familiar roads seeing how they changed. He and Doris shared a love for day trips, always eager to explore new places and discover the occasional new restaurant. Koopy’s unforgettable laugh continues to echo in the hearts of all who knew him.

Joseph L. Barker
Jesus, the “Master Fisherman,” cast his line of divine love and wrapped his holy net of peace around Joseph Louis Barker, 76, surrounded by his close-knit family. Heavenly angels carried Joe to his eternal home on Thursday, April 10, 2025, due to complications from AML cancer.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, in Dyersville at the Reiff Funeral Home. Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier, followed by burial at St. Francis Cemetery. We will celebrate Joe’s life together with a luncheon, after the burial, in the Church basement.
He was born on June 28, 1948, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Jean (Noethe) Barker and Edward Barker, and was named after famous boxer Joe Louis. In his early years, his grandparents, Albert and Anna Noethe, embraced Joe with their loyal devotion and tender care and raised him as their own. Grandma Anna was his mentor in the Catholic faith, and Joey was her favorite. During his childhood, he made great memories spending time with his Uncle Irvin and Aunt Marlys Noethe and their children, his first cousins, Gwen (who was his best friend), Brian, Carol, Wayne, Ken, Alice, and Lee (who was his godson), who were like siblings to him.
He graduated in 1966 from Saint Francis Xavier schools in Dyersville. He proudly fathered two girls in his 20s, JoDee and Ramona—who was his favorite little girl. He started his career at Adam’s Company and then went to John Deere Dubuque as a machinist and tool & die maker. This is where he met his best friend and favorite fishing buddy, Rick Buelow. He retired from John Deere after 34 years, in 2004, at the age of 55— an accomplished major goal. This is where he learned his financial expertise by exchanging knowledge of the finance world with his coworkers, and became a master teacher of finance. He was a member of the UAW Local #94, and was pro union his whole life.
Another life goal was to take his children to Disney World, which he accomplished in 1982, followed by many more trips back with his grandchildren. Joe had many passions in life, including fishing (he was legendary on the Mississippi River and received many Iowa Master Angler awards), deer hunting, muscle cars, investing, and gambling. He knew all there was to know about all cars, which somehow genetically transferred to his grandson, Elijah, who is his mini-me. He loved to give rides in his muscle cars, including his Corvettes and Mustangs, and cruising with Mary. He had the gift of gab and always had a good story to share, and if you ever tried to escape his gift of gab, he would pull you back in by saying, “Let me tell you one more thing.” He welcomed his first grandchildren, from his younger daughter Ramona, in 1999, a set of beautiful twins, Collin and Mads. They had many great memories traveling with Joe, including fishing in Alaska and shooting guns on the dairy farm. He had a second chance at love with Mary Freiburger, whom he married on September 23, 2005, and they spent the last 20 years together cruising and traveling the world with friends and family, which he loved to organize.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Barker of Dyersville, IA; his eldest daughter, JoDee (Todd) Rundall of Bend, OR, and grandson, Elijah; a son-in-law, Jusdyn Krenz of Cedar Rapids, IA, and a grandson, Collin (Lillian) Krenz and grandchild, Mads (Kensey) Krenz; his brother-in-law, Ed Allumbaugh, his cousin, Thomas Allumbaugh; his stepchildren, Renee (Loren) Priem of Highlands Ranch, CO, and step-granddaughter Gabby Fields, Kevin (Flor) of Luxemburg, IA, and step-grandson Kyle and step-granddaughter Addie, Kristi (Ryan) of Cedar Rapids, IA, and step-granddaughter, Briana (Tyler) Ball, and step-grandson Kristopher (Elizabeth) Vandenburg, Mark (Amanda) Priebe of Guttenburg, IA, and step grandson, Brenden, and his in-laws, Agnes Cannon, Ann, Rose, Joe, Tom, Louis, and Francis Freiburger, and extended Noethe family.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his daughter, Ramona Jean Krenz, his grandparents Albert and Anna Noethe, his father and mother-in-law, Earl and Alice Freiburger, a brother-in-law, Dave Cannon, a sister-in-law, Joyce Freiburger, a son-in-law Joshua Vandenburg, his uncle and aunts, Irvin and Marlys Noethe, Eileen Allumbaugh, and first cousins, Gwen Benn, Carol Ludovissy, and Ken Noethe.
