Laura A. Sujak

Laura Ann (Reilly) Sujak beloved wife, sister, daughter, and friend was unexpectedly called home on December 30, 2023. In celebration of Laura’s life, family and friends may visit from 12pm to 5pm on Saturday January 6, 2024, at Willow Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 1415 W. Algonquin Rd., (one half mile east of Randall Rd.), Algonquin, Illinois where there will be a blessing at 3pm. An additional celebration of life will be held in Dubuque, Iowa at a later date.

She was born in Dubuque, Iowa on July 6, 1968, the loving daughter of James P. and Kathleen (Cook) Reilly. Laura attended Resurrection Elementary and graduated from Hempstead High School in 1986, both in Dubuque, Iowa. She furthered her education and graduated from Hawkeye Community College to become a Registered Dental Hygienist. A dream she always followed. She married the love of her life Daniel Sujak on her favorite day of the year July 6th in 2014 which also happened to be her birthday.

As a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, she received many awards throughout her career. Her most accomplished reward was reaching Mastery Level in the Hygiene Director’s Club that she worked hard for and won every year.  Laura loved working at Advanced Dentistry where she considered her co-workers and patients as family.

She was the most genuine, kindhearted, compassionate woman with a heart of gold that would help anyone in need without asking for anything in return.  Laura had the most beautiful sparkling blue eyes, as bright as the skies above, and a smile that would light up any room. She loved unconditionally, always knew the right thing to say and was your number one fan and supporter. She loved singing karaoke, shopping, traveling, hot tubbing, spending time with family and friends and of course her “Chichi’s”.

Those left to carry on her memory are her loving husband, Daniel R. Sujak; her father, James P. Reilly; her brothers, Kevin Reilly, and James (Grace) Reilly; her goddaughter, Jenna Mauer and best friend, Lisa (Shurts) Mueller. She is also survived by her many loved nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews and her beloved “fur babies” Cortez & Remi.

Laura was preceded in death by her loving mother, Kathleen (Kay) Reilly; grandparents James and Lucille Cook and Ray and Monica Reilly; mother-in-law Mary Sujak and father-in-law Edmund Sujak.

Norma J. Freese

Norma Jean Freese, 75, of Dubuque, died Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Norma will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Holy Spirit Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Jeff Frieden as the Celebrant. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Norma was born October 1, 1948, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of George and Clara (Leppert) Freese. Norma worked as a private duty nurse’s aide.

Survivors include her three brothers, Robert (Vicky) Freese of Forest City, NC; Leon Freese of Dubuque; and George K. Freese of Guam.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Michelle and Diane.

Sharon M. Manternach

Sharon M. Manternach, 76, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on December 25th, 2023, at Luther Manor.

According to her wishes, a private family burial will be held. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade, Iowa.

Sharon was born on May 8th, 1947, in Cascade, Iowa, daughter of Mathias and Matilda (Faber) Manternach. She worked at the former Interstate Power Company in the accounting department. Sharon loved dogs, but more than anything loved being an aunt.

Sharon is survived by her sisters Carlyn Sellner and Judy Puetz, and several nieces and nephews.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, sister Janaan (David) Funke, brother Irvin Manternach, brother-in-law Jim Sellner, niece Janita Sellner, and nephew Dean Funke.

Eleanor Nunez

Eleanor (Kohn) Nunez, 92, of Dubuque, died on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at home surrounded by her two sons Randy and Robert.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday December 28th, 2023, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church with Fr. Tom McDermott officiating. Friends and family may visit from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church. Entombment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family. The Mass will be livestreamed and will be available for viewing on the funeral home’s facebook page.

Eleanor was born on February 24, 1931, to Charles “Cooper” and Adaline (Carey) Kohn in Hazel Green, WI. She attended grade and high school in Hazel Green. Later she attended Bayless Business School in Dubuque, IA. She worked at the Hazel Green Hospital before moving to Colorado Springs, CO, and continued to work at El Paso Associates. It was there that she met Richard Nunez and they married at St Francis de Sales Church in Hazel Green on April 30, 1955.

They had two sons, Randy and Robert, and the four of them traveled west every summer, usually between Colorado and California. Richard and Eleanor traveled along the Mississippi River and enjoyed the vistas from Eagle Point Park, her last time this fall.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard, brother and sister in-law Paul and Dorie Kohn, and in-laws Raphael and Soledad Nunez. She is survived by her sons Randy of Bettendorf, IA, and Robert, now of Dubuque.

The Nunez family is grateful to Andrea Ries MD, for providing excellent medical care for many years and Hospice of Dubuque for providing wonderful care and comfort to Eleanor and her sons at the end of her life.

John M. Denlinger

John M. Denlinger, 80, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Balltown, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Stonehill Health Center after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease, with his son Steve by his side.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be held at 2:45 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 4th, 2024, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church with Fr. Steve Garner officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

John was born on April 20, 1943, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Carlyn and Marie (Gansen) Denlinger. He graduated from Wahlert High School where he met the love of his life, Ruth Ann Rolwes of Balltown, Iowa and they became Wahlert High School sweethearts. He married Ruth on June 30, 1964.

Together they farmed on the Rolwes family farm in Balltown for over 50 years along with their son Steve. John was a long-time member of Saint Francis Church Balltown before joining Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque in 1996. He was also very dedicated to the Balltown Lions Club where he received several awards of recognition for his service. In 1975, John was awarded Dubuque County Outstanding Pork Producer of the Year followed by the Iowa Master Pork Producer Award in 1976, as well as the Dubuque County Cattlemen Hall of Fame in 2006.

John was a very hard-working individual but still found time to go on evening river excursions with his good friends from Waupeton, Balltown and around the area. He was loved and respected and will be sadly missed by all.

John is survived by his son Steve Denlinger of Balltown, son-in-law Jim Kauffmann of Dubuque, daughter-in-law Sandy Denlinger of Holy Cross, grandchildren Jason and Alex Kauffmann, Nicole (Michael) Colson and Kelli (Halston Southwick) Denlinger, two great grandchildren Grayson and Landon Colson, siblings Marilyn Bergfeld, LouAnn Weber, and Gladys Wernimont, brother-in-law Gib Clemen, as well as many nieces and nephews, and special friends Shirley Koltes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth Ann on July 29, 2016, daughter Linda Kauffmann on July 26, 2010, and son Dale Denlinger on October 5, 2017, brother Clair Denlinger, sister Carol Clemen, brothers-in-law Ralph Bergfeld, Milton Weber, Charlie Wernimont, Bernard Riniker, Ray Tigges, and sisters-in-law Rita Mae Riniker and Rosemary Tigges.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Stonehill Health Center for their outstanding professional services and care given to John.

Peter V. Ruiz

Peter Virgil Ruiz, 93, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully, with family by his side on December 25, 2023.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday January 6, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3650 Asbury Rd Dubuque, Iowa.

Peter Virgil Ruiz was born February 9, 1930 in Waterloo Iowa to parents, Peter B Ruiz and Esther H V Bucholz. Peter married Verona Smith on June 23, 1948, paving the way for 5 children; 3 boys and 2 girls. Later he married Linda Frisch, thus bringing another daughter to the family. Peter was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on April 1st 1951 and found great joy in meeting and talking to people in his house-to-house ministry. He enjoyed camping with family and friends, fishing and bowling; when he wasn’t working, which he did for the majority of his life. Peter started working in his preteens; thru many jobs, up until he finally retired at 91 years old; from Wal Mart in Bozeman, Montana. In the spring of this year, he was able to move back to Iowa and enjoy frequent visits with family.

Peter is survived by sons; Timothy (Cathy) Ruiz and Andrew Ruiz, daughters Cathy (Vince) Miller, Tina Sebetka and Lisa Herselius; 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Peter Ruiz, sisters Delores Boose, Katherine Smith, Phyllis Ruiz, and Patricia Redd, and brothers Joseph Ruiz and Robert Ruiz.

Peter’s family would like to thank the kindhearted staff at Ennoble for attending to his needs while in their care.

Diane J. Imbus

Diane J. Imbus, 77, of Dubuque, formerly of Menominee, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2023.  Private family services will be held.

Diane was born September 23, 1946 in Savannah, Illinois, daughter of Robert and Betty (Marshall) Weed.

She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and the beauty school now known as Capri College.  She owned and operated Four Seasons Salon in Dubuque until her retirement.

On September 20, 1975, She married Arthur Imbus at Westminster Presbyterian Church.  He preceded her in death on July 28, 2018.

Diane was an animal lover who enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.

She is survived by a sister, Pat (Phillip) Dausener of Dubuque and their thee children, Kenneth (DeAnna) Dausener and their son Joshua, Dana (Dale Winter) VanOstrand and her children, Uriah and his son Tatum, and Olivia, and Janette (Tim) Bird and their children, Ian (Kay) and their daughter, Korie and Lindsey (Jordan) and their daughter, Delilah; and a brother, Mike (Amy) Weed of Little Rock, Arkansas and his sons, Robert and Andrew; and many nieces and nephews on Arthur’s side.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

A Diane Imbus Memorial Fund has been established.

Elta Mae Castleberry

Elta Mae “Tooter” Castleberry, age 85, of Farley, IA, completed her earthly journey on December 30, 2023, at home while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Elta’s life,  a private family service is being held.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Elta’s family.

Elta was born on October 28, 1938, in Roosevelt, Texas, a daughter to Thomas J. and Beady M. (Perkins) McDonald.  She grew up with a strong work ethic, and even stronger character trait of speaking her mind clearly, and an unconditional love for others that never wavered.  Elta enjoyed her years of driving truck and made countless friends along the way.  When she wasn’t burning up miles on the road, you could easily catch Elta watching her birds enjoying the feeders, or catching up on another old western while getting comfortable in her favorite recliner.  Elta embraced life to the fullest and no adventure was ever to be ignored in her eyes.  We live this life once and to pass up on opportunities that presented themselves was really not a good option to participate in.  Elta lived the southern hospitality lifestyle vividly and never judged anyone who crossed her path.  Being a friend of hers was always going to be the eventual outcome as being a stranger was beyond rare.  Elta enjoyed spending her relaxing hours with her cats, K.P. and P.K., but they came in second only to her love and devotion for her family and friends.  We will miss Tooter more than words could accurately depict, but are forever grateful for the memories she leaves behind as well.  Thank you, Elta, for always being true to yourself and may the Lord bless and keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again.

Lonna L. McDermott

Lonna L. McDermott, 86 of Galena, IL passed away Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Mercy One, Dubuque, IA. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the United Methodist Church, Galena, and where friends may call after 10 AM at the church until the time of service. A gathering will be held from 4 to 7 PM, Friday, January 5, 2024, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. The burial will be held at a later date. 

She was born October 15, 1937, in Galena the daughter of Raymond and Malinda (Anderegg) Radabaugh. Lonna attended the Galena schools. She was united in marriage to Wayne D. McDermott on June 20, 1955, in Hanover, IL and he preceded her in death on January 18, 2017.  Lonna operated an in-home daycare for 30 years, and claims she raised half the kids of Galena! She loved babies, and children in general. She even helped with the special education kids at the old Central School.

Lonna loved bingo and was active in Galena United Methodist, and bowling and golf leagues in town. When all her kids were small, they enjoyed their camping trips every June and visiting national parks. She got all her children in the movie Gaily Gaily as extras. They were required to be up early and dressed for the filming at Grant Park. This was difficult to get six kids ready and to the location for a woman who didn’t drive! Lonna loved her walks and walking through the hills of Galena nearly every day. She enjoyed caring for her houseplants and all her flowers.  

Her five children survive Lonna, Jack McDermott of Galena, Bruce (Amy) McDermott of Elizabeth, Wayne (Cathy) McDermott of Dubuque, Lori (Butch) Brininger of Galena; Joni (Randy) Decker of Dubuque, her eleven grandchildren, Emily, Travis, Rachel, Aaron, Nathan, Kevin, Jordan, Sydney, Dylan, Chris and Carey, ten great-grandchildren, Mason, Andre, Anna, Jacob, Ivy, Emma, Kalla, Hanna, Ashlyn, and Jordan, her sister Fay Zeal, and a sister-in-law, Janice Radabaugh, and her many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by, her parents, her husband, a son, Chuck, and two grandchildren, Jacob, and Nikole, two sisters, Regina Roling and Donna Marsden, two brothers, Dean and Delos, three brothers-in-law, Lee Roling, Leo Marsden and Forrest Zeal.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society in memory of Lonna. She had been diagnosed with multiple cancers two days before her passing. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at St Dominic’s Villa which has been her home for the past month, Midwest Medical Center, Galena, and Mercy One. Your care and compassion will never be forgotten.

Elby Dewayne Revis Jr.

Elby Dewayne “Bama” Revis, Jr., age 63, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on December 29, 2023, at home suddenly.  To honor Dewayne’s life, a private family service is being held.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Dewayne’s family.

Dewayne was born on November 24, 1960, in Douglas, Georgia, a son to Elby Revis, Sr. and Gay Nell (Upton) Kammerude.  He enjoyed life each day and possessed a generous soul along the way.  Dewayne spent his working years as a grapple skidder operation with Wiepert Logging and always enjoyed being in the outdoors working with his friends.  In his free-time, Dewayne always looked forward to a little fishing, especially the salmon fishing trips when possible.  He also liked to hunt and when time allowed, and sitting down at the card table to test his euchre skills with anyone willing to challenge him.  We are going to miss his carpe diem attitude towards life and his quick wit, but we are grateful as well that his earthly health battles are now behind him.  Thank you, Dewayne, for reminding us not to take life too seriously and to remember to enjoy the simple moments when they arrive.  We pray that you find peace now and may the Lord bless and keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again.

Jennifer E. Back

Jennifer E. (Reistroffer) Back, 45, of Bellevue, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family.  Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at St. John Lutheran Church in Bellevue.  Visitation will be 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at St. John Lutheran Church, additional visitation will be 10:00 am – 10:45 am prior to services on Wednesday. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Bellevue, Iowa.

Jenny was born September 13, 1978, the daughter of William “Bill” and Phyllis (Drummond) Reistroffer.  She graduated from Bellevue Community High School in 1997.  Jenny married Mike Back on May 4, 2002.  She cared for many children at her home over the years at “Jen’s Daycare”. Jenny enjoyed boating, outdoors, enjoyed being in the sun, and especially spending time with her family and friends.  She had a contagious smile and laugh and never met a stranger.  She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her husband, Mike; daughters, Taylor (Jack Dostal) Back, Torrie (Mason Sieverding) Back, and Terrin (Trevor Dull) Back; soon to be grandmother to baby Sieverding; her parents, Bill and Phyllis Reistroffer; siblings, Billy (Ashley) Reistroffer, Amy (Cory) Meggers, Jessica (Jeremy) Bates, and Angela (Seth) Haan; a sister in-law, Candy (Jerry) Schwein; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of close friends.

Jenny was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Lester and Edith Reistroffer; maternal grandparents, Stanley and Connie Drummond; her mother in-law, Carol Back; and her father in-law, Raymond Back.

Jerry L. Nameth

Jerry Louis Nameth, 79, of Dubuque, died Thursday, December 28, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:45 am Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Jerry will be 11:00 am Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church with Father Brian Dellaert as the Celebrant.  Full military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard. Burial will be at Olive Branch Cemetery in Harrisville, Ohio at a later date.

Jerry was born March 24, 1944, in Martins Ferry, OH, the son of John and Sally Ferren Nameth. On March 11, 2000, he married Laura Jahn Hatcher in Dubuque.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War in Germany for two years and then in the U.S. Army National Guard for four years.

Jerry was a supervisor for Euclid Co. in Cleveland, a firefighter in Eastlake, Ohio, and then as an Ohio State Patrolman before moving to Dubuque, where he worked in security at Best Buy and then MercyOne Hospital.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, American Legion, and Tri-County Sportsman Club. He enjoyed shooting and was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He loved to talk politics. He had a great sense of humor! He had a way of making everyone around him feel good. His family, especially the grandkids and his dog, Schatzie, were his joy in life.

Survivors include his wife, Laura; one son, Derek (Gretchen) Nameth of Menter, OH; one daughter, Dawn (Nate) Weathers of Glen Ellyn, IL; four step-sons, Tim (Angela) Hatcher and Rich (Kristy) Hatcher, both of Dubuque, Dr. Robert (Anne) Hatcher II of Homestead, IA, and Dr. Ryan (Kathleen) Hatcher of Yarmouth, IA; grandchildren, Tyler, Trenton, Colin, Charles, Hollis, Owen, Josie, Blaine, Brock, Georgie, Perri, Robbie III, Colten, Hazel, Benjamin, Ruby, Owen, Daisy, and Henry; one sister, Jackie (Ralph) Dunkle of Scio, OH; and one brother-in-law, Carl Vehre.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Betty Vehre, and his first wife, Nancy Zsikai Nameth.

Richard W. Wachter

Richard “Dick” W. Wachter, 92, of Asbury, died Friday, December 29, 2023, at Harmony Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:15 am Friday, January 5, 2024 at Church of the Resurrection.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Dick will be 10:30 am Friday, January 5, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.  Full military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Post #6.

Richard was born October 17, 1931, in Chicago, IL, the son of Francis J. and Edna M. Wachter. On August 20, 1960, he married Janaan E. Latimer at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Dubuque.

He grew up in Chicago and spent two years at the Angel Guardian Orphanage from 1940-1942. In 1943 he attended the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Children School in Normal, Illinois until he graduated from University High School in 1951. While at the orphan’s home in Normal, he obtained the Eagle Scout Award in 1949.After graduation from high school, he entered the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Agerholm (DD826) during the Korean War as a Quartermaster Signalman. During that war he saw nine months of action overseas in Task Force 77.

In 1954 he entered the University of Iowa in Iowa City and completed his B.S. degree in 1958. The following fall he began his science teaching career at Washington Junior High School in Dubuque until his retirement in 1991. In 1971, he attained his Master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in Science Education. He also spent many summers working at the American Trust Bank as a teller. Later, he spent six years at the Dubuque Greyhound Track as a teller. In 1991 he worked off and on for seven years at the Casino Belle and The Diamond Jo as a cashier.

Dick loved his Iowa Hawkeyes, reading, and the Chicago Cubs. For many years he took fishing trips to Canada with his fellow teachers. He was a member of Church of the Resurrection, and the V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife, Janaan; three children, Nancy (Randy) Freese of Reinbeck, IA, Robert (Joy) Wachter of Marion, IA, and Jeff (Ann) Wachter of Dubuque; eight grandchildren, Christopher (Robyne) Freese, Danielle Freese, Travis Freese, Emma Wachter, Maya Wachter, Dallas (Jonathan) Minor, Donovan Caldwell, and Endira Caldwell; five great-grandchildren, Huxton Freese, Aubrey Freese, Cohen Freese, Crew Freese, and Charlie Minor; and his brothers, William Wachter of Altmonte, FL, and James Wachter of Columbus, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Wachter.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Hospice of Dubuque.

Betty A. Fishnick

Betty A. (Smith) Fishnick, 73, passed through heavens gates on December 23, 2023 after a courageous 4 year battle with Parkinson’s/Dementia. To honor Betty’s life, there will be a Celebration of Life held on March 16, 2024 from 1-3 at the American Legion, 1306 Delhi St, Dubuque, IA.

She was born on May 19, 1950 in Dubuque, IA the daughter of Clarence and Mae Smith, Sherrill, IA. She graduated from Wahlert High School class of 1968.

On May 16, 1970 she married Michael (Mike) L. Fishnick. Betty held many different jobs but none more important than being a homemaker and eventually an at home caregiver for those that needed her most.

Betty made friends easily and was usually the loudest in the group. She wasn’t shy to let you know what was on her mind and you always knew where you stood. She loved her family and grandkids with so much passion. You could ALWAYS count on Nan!

In true Betty form, her last wish was to continue to help others. She has donated her brain to continue the efforts to cure dementia.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Mike, daughter Jamie (Toby) Ryan; grandsons Alan (Susan) Duffy, Nate (Marija) Duffy, Levi and Trent Ryan; granddaughters Morgan Duffy and Aunna Ryan; great-grandsons Lincoln, Stellan and Nikola Duffy; two brothers and numerous brother in-laws, sister in-laws, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son Michael Fishnick Jr, daughter Tonya Duffy, parents Clarence & Mae Smith, in-laws Bernard & Edna Fishnick, brother in-law Patrick Fishnick Sr, and sister in-law Kim Fishnick.

Virtus J. Clasen

Virtus J. Clasen, 92, of Bellevue, died peacefully in his home on Friday, December 29, 2023.  Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue, additional visitation will be 9:30 am – 10:30 am Friday, prior to Mass at the funeral home.  As a veteran of the Korean War, burial with military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #273 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Bellevue.

Virtus was born January 9, 1931 in Springbrook, Iowa, the son of Alvin and Emma (Weis) Clasen.  He graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in 1949. Virtus served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954.  He married Marilyn M. Sieverding on May 3, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, she passed on April 30, 2021.

Virtus served as City Administrator for Bellevue for many years and later worked for the City of Clinton retiring in 1991.  During his years in City Administration, Virtus served a term as President of the Iowa Municipal Finance Officers Association.He and Marilyn made many friends during their years attending the various conventions and meetings.

In retirement Dad enjoyed many summer mornings on the river fishing with family & longtime friends.  Winters brought travel to Florida and Arizona with Marilyn and daily card games.  Frying fish for a crowd of hungry grandchildren was a joy. While gardening was not a competition for Dad, a few in the family thought he had better dirt and that is why he seemed to “win” every year.   A man of few words, he taught his family through acts of kindness, volunteerism and seeing the best in everyone.  He faithfully served as the Financial Secretary of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. He volunteered with the Bellevue Bread Basket for over 30 years.  An active member of the American Legion he took great pride in his military service and lived the Marine Corp motto of “semper fidelis”.

Survivors include his children:  Steven (Sheila) Clasen, Sue (Jerry) O’Brien, Bruce (Carrie) Clasen and Jayne (Tony) Schroeder; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren on the way.  Siblings, Mary Ellen Kirk, Merlin (Marilyn) Clasen, Pauline Wagener, and Lela Roiger.  Sisters and brothers in-law, Alice Kilburg, Cletus (Ham) Sieverding, Dave (Norma) Sieverding, Glen (Shirley) Sieverding, Dan (Mary) Sieverding, Mark (Sherri) Sieverding, Donna Sieverding, Darlene Sieverding and Darla Sieverding.

Virtus was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Alvin (Mary Ann) Clasen, and Bernadine (Arthur Goldsmith and Edward)Nefzger; sisters and brothers in-law, James Kirk, LeRoy Wagener, Dennis Hines, Cliff Roiger, Karen Sieverding(infancy), Tom Sieverding, Don Sieverding, Lorin “Butch” Sieverding, Phyllis Sieverding, Lorin Kilburg and Betty Sieverding.

Virtus & Marilyn enjoyed the music of their day and many of their favorites became favorites of the family, The Old Lamplighter, Big Bad John, Que Sera, Sera and others. Together they enjoyed a strong faith relationship and a commitment to serving others.

“Semper Fidelis” translates to “Always faithful”.  A most fitting tribute to a life well lived.
