William P. Koster

William P. “Willie” Koster, age 56, of Dubuque, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 8, 2022, at his home.  To celebrate Willies’ life, family and friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, at Behr Funeral Home with Deacon John Stierman officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Willie was born on January 11, 1966, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Donald and Patricia (Hentges) Koster.

Willie attended school in Dubuque, and after that became the primary care taker for his mom.  After she passed away, Willie was employed at Eagle Window and Door, Steel Warehousing for several years and lastly for Liqui-Green.  He also helped his cousin, Donny Hentges, driving on the bread route, along with several other “side-hustles”.  He was united in marriage to Kimberly Doser on February 6, 1996, in Las Vegas, Nevada.  They were together for several years and had 2 beautiful daughters before taking separate paths in life.  Willie was a Harley Davidson enthusiast and loved getting out on the open road riding his bike.  He enjoyed being outside fishing and golfing as well as shooting pool in league for several years.  Willie was a die hard Hawkeyes fan, and everyone knew that if a gift needed to be purchased anything Hawkeye or Harley would be greatly appreciated.  Willie always put his family and friends first in his life.  He regularly got the family together for dinners and fun activities, making sure to send out his famous “chop-chop” reminder so no one would be tardy to the party.  Willie was adventurous and lived life to the fullest, something he always encouraged those around him to do.  He had the best sense of humor and was a great prankster, always providing a good laugh.  He was deeply loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Francis C. Koetz

Francis C. Koetz, age 99, of Centralia, passed away peacefully at 1:00 a.m., on Friday, July 8, 2022, at home with his loving family by his side.  To celebrate Francis’ life, family and friends may visit from 3:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 241 Peosta Street, Peosta, Iowa.  There will be a parish scripture wake service held prior to the visitation at 3:00 p.m.  The Centralia-Peosta Fire Department will be paying their respects at 6:30 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Michael G. Schueller officiating.  Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Centralia.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Francis was born on October 25, 1922, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Michael A. and Mary Edna (Thielen) Koetz.

Francis attended St. John’s Grade School and graduated from high school in Peosta.  He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marian Ann Schueller, on August 9, 1949, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.  They have been blessed with almost 73 wonderful years of marriage and 5 children together.  Francis farmed south of Centralia from 1949 until 1962, with his favorite Allis-Chalmers tractors.  He also worked for contractor Burton Albrecht for 5 years and for Albert Schueller and Leo Gartner who owned S&G Delivery for 20 years delivering furniture for Rosheks and Sears, and later for Larry Wolff, until his retirement.  He was a former trustee and member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, Dubuque County Right to Life, was the former mayor of Centralia and served on the city council.  Francis was the last of the original founding members of the Centralia Fire Department.  Francis was also an accomplished woodworker, building cabinets and furniture for his home and refurbishing the woodwork, statue stands and the baptismal font at church.  His family was always his main focus, and he cherished all of the time they spent together.  We are extremely grateful for the time we had with Francis, and take comfort in knowing he is now resting peacefully after doing God’s will for 99 years.

Raymond G. McDonald Jr.

Raymond G. “Sonny” McDonald Jr., age 80, of Dubuque, passed away at 12:08 a.m., on Friday, July 8, 2022, at home surrounded by his loving family.  To celebrate Sonny’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Monday, July 11, 2022, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 7:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at the Church of the Nativity, 1225 Alta Vista Street, with Rev. Andrew J. Upah officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Sonny was born on September 17, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Raymond and Phyllis (Sitzmann) McDonald.

Sonny learned carpentry skills from his father from an early age with Ray McDonald Sr., Construction, and used that knowledge to make his living.  He went on to establish his own business, Ray McDonald Jr., Fine Woodworking with his sons by his side.  Sonny was united in marriage to the love of his life, Gloria Smith, on June 17, 1961, at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Asbury.  They were blessed with 8 children together and recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.  He was a member of the Church of the Nativity, the Midwest Tool Collectors Association and received the Ken Kringle Preservation Award of Excellence for his work on the Bradley House.  Sonny was a renowned Stanley Plane Collector and a long-time antique collector.  He also loved playing pool with his friends, and working in his garden.  Family, however, was always at the top of Sonny’s priority list and he truly cherished spending time with Gloria, the children and the grandchildren.

Sonny was proud to say, “I was blessed with 2 sets of parents, my father and mother and my wife’s father and mother.  Blessed in life with the mistakes the Lord let me survive.  Blessed in life with the most beautiful creature I ever laid my eyes on, my wife, Gloria.  Blessed in life with my children, Raymond, Laura, Bobby, Lisa, Alana, Raechelle and Joseph.  Blessed in a trade I truly loved.  I never ever was able to attain perfection as hard I tried.  Upon further reflection I could have done many things better.  Life has humbled me although I never showed it in public.  Always in private.  All I wanted to be was just a carpenter.  Just a carpenter.”

Ethel A. Schumacher

Ethel Ann Schumacher, 93, of Dubuque, died Thursday, July 7, 2022, at the ProMedica Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation in Dubuque.

A prayer service will be held at 4:00 pm Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory followed by visitation until 7:00 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Ethel will be 10:30 am Thursday, July 14, 2022, at Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Steven Garner as the Celebrant. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Ethel was born May 18, 1929, in Dubuque, the daughter of Leo A. and Vera M. Young Stecklein. On January 31, 1953, she married Francis Henry Schumacher at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. He died April 4, 2020.

She graduated from St. Joseph Academy.

She was a homemaker and worked for Catholic Charities.

She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Rosary Society.

Survivors include her children, Edward (Sue) Schumacher of Rockwell City, IA, Jean (John) Holmes of Lynnwood, WA, David (Chris Becker) Schumacher of Dubuque, Robert (Mary Streif) Schumacher of Dubuque, Mary Kay (Jason) Peddicord of Dubuque, Gary (Jennifer) Schumacher of Dubuque, Thomas (Erin Buxton) Schumacher of Lynnwood, WA; 19 grandchildren; and 29 great grandchildren; two great- great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Eldon Stecklein; one son, James Schumacher; one great grandson, Brody Schumacher; her daughter-in-law, Kim Schumacher.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Hospice of Dubuque.

Rifat M. Sufi

Rifat M. Sufi, age 63, of Peosta, IA died peacefully at home, following a long illness, on July 06, 2022.  A private gathering of respect will be held to honor Rifat’s life. Date yet to be determined.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Rifat’s family.

Rifat was born on September 30, 1958, in Manama, Bahrain, a son to Mohamed Hussain Sufi and Zakiya Nooraldin.  He attended the University of Iowa where he met and eventually married his wife, Kimberly.  The couple was blessed with a daughter and many wonderful years together.  He spent the majority of his working career as an investment banker in both Bahrain and the U.S.  Rifat was a caring husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mardelle L. Rojemann

Mardelle ‘Mardy’ L. Rojemann of Menominee, IL. left this world unexpectedly on July 7, 2022, at the age of 63.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 11, 2022, at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, where the parish scripture service will be at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Members of American Legion Post # 787 of East Dubuque will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. Monday. A visitation will also be held on Tuesday from 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. at Nativity BVM Church, Menominee.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Nativity BVM Church in Menominee, with Fr. Joel Lopez officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mardy was born on June 2, 1959, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Dane ‘Jiggs’ and Olive (Kruse) Steiner. She, grew up on the family farm, learned the skill of gardening, and was active in 4-H. Her memories from her younger years, made for great stories today.

After a ‘chase’, she tied down the love of her life and married Gerald ‘Gerry’ Rojemann on November 19, 1983. Together they carried on her family’s tradition of Dubuque Farmer’s Market and love for craft shows. Her talent was evident in her beautiful flowers and produce.

Mardy was a dedicated mother and grandmother first and foremost. She treasured her daughters and embraced every moment with family. She especially loved her role as Grandma, spending every minute she could spoiling them. She took great pride in us, and her love was truly unconditional.

Her friends were her family, and she built many friendships over the years through her encounters bartending, visiting at Market, and working at Emmy Lou’s. She enjoyed playing bingo, dominating euchre, and shenanigans as Thelma & Louise with her best friend, Becky. Mardy’s love for her family and friends was shown by her kind, generous, heart as she always put others first.

She is greatly missed by, her husband, Gerry; daughters: Tracy (Brandon) Berning-Birkbeck and Jody (Mark) Calvert, of Galena IL; seven grandchildren: Tyler, Natalie, Kristen, Owen, Harper, Gavin, and Scarlett; a brother, Dane (Sue) Steiner of Asbury, IA; best friend: Becky Ruchti; and many brothers & sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mardy was reunited with her parents; her son-in-law Evan Berning; grandparents Gilbert and Lenora Kruse; in-laws Joseph and Viola Rojemann; aunts: Bea Raab, Lavonne Kruse, and Mary Hoftender.

Jodi J. Benson

Jodi Jane Benson, 56, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on July 6, 2022.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 10th, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road.

Jodi was born in Dubuque Iowa on December 7, 1965, the daughter of William and Lee (Wunderlich) Latham. She graduated from Hempstead High School and on June 16th, 1995, she married Ronald Francis Benson in Borger, Texas.

Jodi had a love for crafts & arts and making soap as well as going to farmers market, where she was also a vendor. She had a great love for her family and her dog Lucy.

She is survived by her husband Ron Francis Benson; her daughter Ashley Ann (Paco) Apodaca; her sons: Dustin Lee Benson, Beau Francis Benson and Jacob Bernard Benson. Grandchildren: Sage Apodaca, Haven Apodaca, Regan Apodaca and Mykia Apodaca.

Her brothers Todd (Lisa) Latham and Billy (Tina) Latham; mother-in-law Carol Benson; her nieces Crystal Parker and Stephanie Maiers; her nephew T.J. Latham.

Jodi was preceded in death by her father William Latham, and her sister Deanna Maiers Boardman (Latham).

Jason W. Moore

Jason W. Moore, age 52, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on July 5, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, with his soul-mate, Jacquie, by his side.  To honor Jason’s life, a private family service is being held at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Jason’s family.

Jason was born on October 8, 1969, in Odessa, TX, a son to Jesse and Janice Kay (McBroom) Moore.  He was a graphic designer by trade and worked most recently at Cascade Lumber.  In his free-time, Jason was one of the enthusiasts who thoroughly enjoyed spending an afternoon at Komiskey Park with his friends in the Nerds with Swords group. His heart was as big as his love for life and his kind and compassionate soul left a trail of positivity wherever he traveled.  It’s difficult to imagine Jason being taken from us so soon, but until we find some peace in this reality, we will surely seek to find comfort within the abundance of wonderful memories which he leaves behind.  Thank you, Jason, for reminding us not to take life too seriously every day and always find the time to embrace the lighter moments whenever possible.  May you find peace now as we await patiently to see your big and bright smile once again.

Rev. Donald V. Bakewell

Reverend Donald V. Bakewell, of Dubuque, IA, was called to be with the Lord on July 6, 2022, surrounded by family.

Friends and relatives may call from 4-7 PM, Monday, July 11, 2022, at St. Joseph Church in Key West, Iowa, with a prayer service led by Fr. Josh Link at 7:00 PM.  Friends and relatives may also call from 9-11 AM on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at St. Patrick Church in Waukon, IA.  The mass of Christian burial will immediately follow at 11:00 AM with Archbishop Michael Jackels presiding and Fr. John Moser as homilist.  Burial will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon, IA. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

Fr. Don Bakewell was born January 12, 1940, in a hospital in Caledonia, MN, to Vincent and Veronica (Schulte) Bakewell, who were living on a small farm in New Albin, IA at the time.  After the death of his father in 1943, the family moved to Waukon, IA.  There he was raised by his mother in a Catholic environment under the spiritual nourishment of St. Patrick Church and the Sisters of the Presentation of St. Patrick grade school and high school.  He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque and completed his theological studies at Mount St. Bernard Seminary, also in Dubuque.

He was ordained June 4, 1966, at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque by Bishop Loras Watters.

He served as associate pastor at St. Joseph in Elkader, 1966-69; Sacred Heart in Oelwein, 1969-72; St. Joseph in Cresco; Holy Cross in Schley, 1972-79; and St. Joseph the Worker in Dubuque, 1979-81.  He also taught and served as guidance counselor at Sacred Heart High School in Oelwein, 1969-72, and at Notre Dame High School in Cresco, 1972-79.

He was administrator at St. Francis in Barclay and a member of the faculty as guidance counselor at Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville, 1981-87.

He was pastor of St. Mary Parish and director of St. John School of Religion, both in New Hampton, from 1987-93 and pastor of SS. Peter and Paul in Springbrook and St. John in Andrew, 1993-94.

Fr. Bakewell served as executive secretary and executive coordinator of the Bellevue Area Elementary and Marquette School System in Bellevue, 1993-2002.  He served as ACCW Bellevue Deanery moderator, 1993-2002, and dean of the Bellevue Deanery, 2000-2002.

He was pastor of St. Joseph in Preston, 1994-2002; supervising pastor and sacramental priest at St. Peter in Sabula, 1994-2002; Priest supervisor in St. Catherine and St. Donatus, 2000-2002, and pastor at St. Joseph in Key West, IA from 2002 until his retirement on July 10, 2012.

Fr. Don’s service to the people of God was built upon the rosary, scripture, and the Eucharist.  He was a man of great faith with a deep love for the Lord and the Blessed Mother.  He was a beloved and respected priest, brother, uncle, and friend, whose gentle and humble demeanor led others to be faithful followers of Christ.

Fr. Don is survived by his siblings, Eileen Pins of Asbury, Norbert (Sharon) Bakewell of Dubuque, and Marilyn Loewen of Dubuque.  His nieces and nephews, Linda (Bill) Cerjak, Laura (Rick) Droeske, Lisa (Steve) Verdon, Diane (Daniel) Sturgill, and Denise (Jeff) Geraci, Kevan (Kelly) Bakewell and Amy (Grant) Henn, Jennifer (Sam) Itskovich, Steven (Karen Giampolo) Loewen, and Michael (Meredith Cooney) Loewen.  Also surviving him are his Aunt Marcella Alberti of Waukesha, WI, many cousins, and several great nieces and nephews as well as great-great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Sr. Mary Genette Bakewell, PBVM, his brothers-in-law, Germain (Jerry) Pins and Albert Loewen, and his nephew, Keith Bakewell.

In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials can be made to the Rev. Donald V. Bakewell Memorial Fund.  Cards of condolences may be sent to Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa, who is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Byrl A. Nesteby

Byrl Ann Nesteby, 88, of Dubuque, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Unity-Point Finley Hospital.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.  until the 1 p.m. Funeral Service on  Monday, July 11, 2022, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd., Dubuque. Deacon Christopher Nesteby (grandson) will officiate. Interment will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Byrl was born March 11, 1934 in Dubuque, the daughter of Clyde and Mildred Janzen. She graduated from East Dubuque High School, and was voted Homecoming Queen. On July 26, 1952, Byrl married Richard H. Nesteby at Wesley United Methodist Church, East Dubuque. He preceded her in death on January 7, 2008.

She was employed in ARA Services at John Deere Dubuque Works for 28 years. Byrl was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church in East Dubuque, and taught Sunday School at Immanuel Congregational UCC in Dubuque for 20 years. In her younger years, Byrl and her husband  enjoyed boating, snowmobiling, watching Richard at the stock car races, and traveling all over the country on their motorcycle. She donated Christmas gifts to the residents of Sunnycrest, and also donated school supplies for kids. She loved playing cards, and was a member of the same card club from the 1960’s to the 1980’s. Byrl loved to read, going through 3 novels a week. She was devoted to her special canine companion, Sadie. Above all, she was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother, and she will be sadly missed.

Byrl is survived by her children, Scott (Pam) Nesteby, of Asbury, Michael Nesteby, of Dubuque, Jim (Marlene) Nesteby, of East Dubuque, and Sherry (Jim) Welter, of Dubuque; her grandchildren, Steven Nesteby, Kristina Nesteby, Christopher (Danielle) Nesteby, Lynnann (Jim) Godwin, Joseph Welter, and Andrew (Jessica) Welter; and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard; her parents; her sister, Wilma (Jeff) Sample; and her brother, Carl (Betty) Janzen.

Ronald D. Hirsch

Ronald D. “Ronnie” Hirsch, age 74, of Dubuque, passed away at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Hawkeye Care Center surrounded by his loved ones.  To celebrate Ronnie’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., on Monday, July 11, 2022, at Tri-State Community Church, 12937 Derby Grange Road.  Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m., at the church with Pastor Jack Redmond officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Ronnie was born on December 11, 1947, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Carl M. and Helen V. (Butler) Hirsch.

Ronnie attended school in Dubuque before going on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Navy for 4 years during Vietnam followed by a few years in the Naval Reserve.  He was serving his apprenticeship with Carpenters Local #678 until he had a serious car accident in 1970.  After the accident Ronnie’s life changed, and he began working with the Sheltered Workshop on Garfield for over 30 years, earning a plaque for his accomplishment.  He liked spending time at Cozy Corner and Lutheran Services.  Ronnie loved to play Euchre and eagerly taught many of his nieces and nephews how to play.  He also enjoyed listening to old country music and was a talented guitarist in his younger days.  The last big concert he attended was at Five Flags in 2019, where he saw the Oak Ridge Boys with a few of his favorite nurses from Hawkeye Care Center.  He was thrilled to be chosen to go on the Honor Flight to Washington DC in May of this year.  Ronnie was a kind and gentle soul and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Daniel C. Hammel

Daniel C. “Danny” Hammel, 20, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on July 3rd, 2022, due to a motorcycle accident.

To celebrate Danny’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday July 11th, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a service will be held at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Donald Key officiating.

Danny was born on August 6, 2001, in Dubuque, Iowa son of Christi Key and Clarence Miller. Danny attended ALC in Dubuque, Iowa where he received his high school diploma. He worked at Nordstrom Distribution Center in Dubuque.

Danny loved the outdoors, spending time with his cat Mufasa and his snake Nagini, and spending time with all of his family and friends, especially his brother and sisters. He most of all loved riding motorcycles with his best friend/cousin or anyone else who would join.

Those left to cherish Danny’s memory include his parents Christi Key (Mike Beam) and Clarence Miller; sisters Michelle Kyle and Alexis Nelson; brother Damien Nelson; Grandfather Ronald (Tammy) Key Sr.; uncles RJ Key, Cody Key, Darren Carey and Matt Carey; aunts Donna Brown, Amber Key and Terri Tucker; and his best friend and cousin Scotty Brown.

He was preceded in death by his brother Dominic Miller, great grandmothers Albertina Key and Rosemary Michael, grandmother Colleen Brandenberg, and aunts Tonya and Heidi.

Marian K. Roth

Marian K. Roth, 92, died on June 7, 2022, in Chicago, IL.

Marian was the daughter of Raymond V. Roth and Mabel (Weydert) Roth. Marian graduated from Galena High School, attended Saint Therese College in Winona, MN, graduated from Clarke College, in Dubuque, lA and earned Master’s degrees from DePaul University in Chicago and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI. She taught high school English and later worked as a librarian in the Chicago Public Library system for twenty-one years, retiring in 1997. After retirement she volunteered at the Chicago History Museum for fifteen  years.

She is survived by sisters, Magdalen Hirst, Mequon, WI, Virginia (Dan) Benson, Beaver Dam, WI, Lenore Manz, Salem, OR and a brother, Robert (Mary) Roth, Galena, and eighteen nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at St. Mary Cemetery, Galena.

Larry H. Derganz

Larry H. Derganz, 73, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating Larry’s life will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Monday, July 11, 2022, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Cremation rites have been accorded.

Larry Henry Derganz was born on October 27, 1948 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Joseph and Agatha (Weis) Derganz.  He grew up in Maquoketa and was a 1967 graduate of Maquoketa High School. He then attended Muscatine Community College for two years.  He married Diane Hinke on June 10, 1969 in Bellevue, Iowa.  Two children were born to this union, Philip and Sara.

Larry had first worked with his dad at Derganz Electric and Refrigeration.  Upon his dad retiring, Larry then worked at General Thermal in Maquoketa from 1978 to 1982.  He then established Derganz Electric and Refrigeration in Maquoketa which he and his wife Diane owned and operated for over 40 years.  He semi-retired the past two years.  His main goal always was to help people and to service what he sold.

Larry was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and all kinds of hunting including deer, squirrel, mushroom, and hickory nuts to name a few.  He also loved animals, especially cats.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Diane Derganz of Maquoketa, IA; children, Philip (Yolanda Bennett) Derganz of Maquoketa, IA, and Sara (Marty Clark) Derganz of Maquoketa, IA; special other son, Matt Potter of Monmouth, IA; siblings, JoAnn Mensing of Lowden, IA, Kenneth Derganz of Maquoketa, IA, and Linda (Chuck) Borchers of Toronto, IA; and his best friend of 16 years, “Morgan” the cat.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Daniel J. Sommers

Daniel J. Sommers, 75, of Dubuque, passed away Tuesday, July 5th, 2022. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public services. Private family burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors accorded by the American Legion Post #6. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

He was born September 11, 1946, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Robert and Adeline (Fitzpatrick) Sommers. Dan attended grade school in Cedar Rapids and later moved to Dubuque. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1964. Dan enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Germany and Vietnam.

He married Susan Hodgson on October 21, 1972, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Key West, Iowa. He worked for the City of Dubuque Water Department for 32 years and served as past president of the Local 758 Operating Engineers Union.

Dan is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susan Sommers; 3 children; Brad Sommers (Kim Sampers) of Cedar Rapids, Michelle (Luke) Rupp and Brett Sommers; 3 grandchildren; Allison, Madalynn and Blair Rupp, all of Dubuque, and brother, Jeffrey (Loretta) Sommers of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Marian Renchen.
