Oliver J. Kringle

Oliver James Kringle December 2, 1931 ~ September 27, 2021

Beloved Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Oliver James Kringle passed away September 27, 2021. He was kind, he was loved and he will be missed.

Ollie, to all who knew him, was taken from us by cancer. True to form, Ollie’s diagnosis did not stop him until the very end. He proudly continued his daily exercise regimen, and continued to search for fix-it projects to do around his home or the homes of those he loved. In his last weeks, among other things, he painted posts with his granddaughter Jacquelyn, guided his granddaughter Elizabeth and her husband Adam through various home projects, and mixed and laid cement in his driveway. He could fix or build anything. He had a uniquely humble confidence in his abilities. He loved sharing his skills, teaching others. He was convinced any one could master construction the way he had. His goal was always to leave you more self-sufficient than when he found you.

Ollie was a proud life-time Dubuque resident. He attended Saint Columbkille’s School from kindergarten through high school, he worked at Rosheks Department Store, Caradco and then John Deere for over thirty years. In addition to his day job, Ollie started working as an apprentice electrician when he was sixteen.  He grew those skills into what came to be Kringle Electric, the business he owned and operated for over fifty years.

Ollie was a master story teller. His stories focused on his three loves, his family, his work and the joy he gained from being in service to others. He was a good egg. He was the guy who always held the door for strangers, who woke up early so he could clear the snow for his neighbors, who checked out library books to share with his neighbor, and grew tomatoes to distribute. He enjoyed giving of himself and expected nothing in return; he knew the reward came in the giving. He was the kind of kind that cannot be overestimated.

He laughed with his whole body, full on, with tears in his eyes and barely able to catch his breath.

Ollie was a devout Catholic; there is no doubt that he is currently looking for work to do, or things to fix, in heaven.

Ollie was fortunate and grateful to have had twenty-four years of marriage with the love of his life, his partner, his best friend, Janice Kringle. He and Janice shared a love of travel, laughs, and pie. They took care of each other.

Ollie is survived by his lovely wife Janice Kringle, his children Ruth Kringle, Karen Walling, Carol Sheets (Jeffrey), Nancy Williams (Scott), and Lisa Chipman, his grandchildren, Elizabeth Sheets-Vorwald (Adam), Jacquelyn Sheets, Makayla Williams, Katherine Walling and Victoria Henle, Justin Seay, Kyle Seay, his great grandchild Jax, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ollie was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Idella Kringle, Irene Balk, Mary Wick, Deloss Kringle, Jr., and Leo Kringle.

Ollie’s family is so very grateful for the grace and guidance of the good people at Hospice of Dubuque, and the many medical staff who befriended and cared for him over the years.

In lieu of flowers, Ollie’s family encourages you to look for someone to help today. Go out of your way to say a kind word, do a good deed, be a good egg, be an Ollie.

In consideration of health concerns, there will be a small private service. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family. The family would love to hear from family and friends, please leave online condolences or messages for the family at www.leonardfuneralhome.com.

Ronald G. Manternach

Ronald G. “Ron” Manternach, age 80, of Cascade, IA, completed his earthly journey suddenly on Sept. 28, 2021, at home.  To honor Ron’s life, his Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, at 11:00 am, at St. Matthias Catholic Church, 411 4th Avenue in Cascade, IA.  Family and friends are invited to visit from 9:00-11:00 am on Monday at the church prior to the service.  Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Cascade.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Ron’s family.

Ron was born on February 14, 1941, in Monticello, IA, a wonderful Valentine’s gift to Joseph and Amelia (Kelchen) Manternach. Ron grew up surrounded by family and friends and was blessed to enjoy his entire life in the Cascade area.  He was united in marriage to his beautiful bride, Bridget Sutton, and they were blessed with 2 daughters and many wonderful years together before Bridget was sadly called home ahead of Ron in 2017.  Ron served in the Army Reserves and was a mechanic by trade, working at Cigrand Brothers, John Deere, the City of Dubuque, Custom Precast, and also had his own shop, Ron Manternach Repair, for many years.  His work ethic and skills were always on display and undeniably grounded in the core of his being.  When Ron ventured into his woodworking shop, his natural abilities became even more evident as he created beautiful works of art.  He participated in antique tractor pulling and was a proud member of the Hawkeye Vintage Farm Machinery Association.  Ron was an honorable man.  His heart was as large as his generous, patient, and determined soul was.  He always gave his best and treasured any opportunity to make the world around him just a little bit better place to reside.  We are beyond heart-broken with Ron’s sudden absence from our physical lives, but we know that the medical battles he’d been fighting were surely taking their toll and thankfully Ron finds both peace and rest from all of his earthly struggles now.  We will miss Ron with every fiber of our being and now treasure every wonderful memory he leaves behind until we all meet again.  Thank you, Ron, for leading by example and may the loving arms of the Lord hold you safely and securely as we seek healing for our broken hearts.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Ron include his 2 daughters, Paula J. (Jennifer McHenry) Manternach, Iowa City, IA, and Tracey L. Manternach, Des Moines, IA; his special friend, Linda Takes-Davis, Cascade, IA; his siblings, Katie Rockzien, Anamosa, Joan Hoffmann, Cascade, Muriel Schlemme, Cascade, Lois (Alan) Gravel, Cascade, Joe (JoAnn) Manternach, Cascade, Ralph (Rita) Manternach, Cascade, Loras (Donna) Manternach, Masonville, and Lester (Mary Ellen) Manternach, Cascade;  his in-law’s, Lois Manternach, Cascade, and Jim Collins, Richfield, MN, his step sister-in-law, Pat Manders, Dubuque; along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bridget (Sutton) Manternach; his siblings, Florence (Harry) Schockemoehl, Eleanor (Clarence) Quint, Veronica (Herman) Welter, Alvina (Robert) Greif, Eva Mae (Elmer) Klocke, Harold Rockzien, Leona (Sr. Irmina, OSF) Manternach, and Larry Manternach; his in-law’s, Tom Hoffmann, Duane Schlemme, Paul (Zita) Sutton, and Juanita Collins; his step-mother, Millie Manders Manternach, his step-siblings, Jack (Jeanette) Callahan, Don (Mary) Manders, and Dorrance Manders; and his favorite canine companion, Charlie.

Dave had a few nicknames, but will certainly be remembered as, The Candy Man to his, “lovies.” He really enjoyed the gift of giving, Christmas was his favorite time of year, where he got to see little faces light up with excitement and anticipation. Feeding birds was more than a hobby, but another gift of giving back in his eyes. April lilacs gave him the go-ahead to forage for his favorite delicacy, the morel. Dave was the best kind of instigator, a little nudge of sarcasm went a long way for this man and was always shown by a twinkle in his eye and smirk in the curve of his lips, he loved to stoke his wife’s fire, but above all, he found love through his lighthouse, his soulmate and best friend.

Rogers on November 11, 1962.  Living in a small apartment in New London, IA, they started their family with the births of Ann and Susan.  Andy’s growing positions at local banks took them from Iowa to Wisconsin where Brooke was born.

The family then moved was to Galena, IL.  It was there Fran resumed her career as a medical technologist at the Galena-Stauss Hospital.  Her hospital colleagues became her great friends, and her career there extended well beyond retirement age.

When Andy passed away on March 15, 1987, Fran started the second part of her life.  She was rejuvenated with the birth of her grandchildren, Andi, Autumn and Meadow.  Fran was a devoted member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, taught Bible Study at the Galena-Stauss Nursing Home, loved watching sports, especially the Galena Pirates, and her granddaughter’s volleyball games.

Fran was a devoted member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church where she enjoyed serving in every aspect such as serving communion, quilting, setting up the altar and running a Bible study at the nursing home.  While she loved her family and friends, Fran also could fritter away a day by herself like no body’s business.  She was an avid reader, loved walking and being outside and working in her flower garden.  She enjoyed traveling and going on adventures of any kind especially the kind that ended with a glass of wine with her friend Joanne. Fran loved to quilt and was very proud of the many quilts she helped to make for the church.  She embodied goodness and led by example including always having chocolate chip cookies in the freezer in case company dropped in.

Surviving are three daughters, Ann Rogers-Deppe (William) of Shullsburg, WI, Susan Rogers of Beverly, MA and Brooke (David) Deppe of Cuba City, WI; three granddaughters, Andi Amidon, Autumn and Meadow Deppe; and a brother Robert Fuller.  Her family feels blessed that Fran enjoyed a lifetime of good health and a great spirit and faith and that she is reunited with her husband.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Marian; and her husband Andy.

Memorials may be given to St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
