Alice M. Martin

Alice Marie (Bast) Martin, 92, of Dubuque, passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, August 1, 2021. In celebration of Alice’s life, join her family for coffee and her famous cinnamon rolls from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2021, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1755 Delhi Street in Dubuque.  Memorial services will follow at 10:00 a.m.  Masks and social distancing will be required. The funeral service will be livestreamed on Holy Trinity Lutheran Church YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUxZuvDgEkvYIBkVgOt4Q8Q. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory is entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be shared at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com .

Alice Martin was born Alice Marie Bast on September 18, 1928, on a farm 2 miles west of Hudson, Iowa near Cedar Falls. Alice met her husband Ray Martin at Wartburg College in Waverly—they were married in May 1949 and remained devoted to each other and their family for 60 years until Ray’s passing in 2009. Their four children were all born in the 1950’s: Bill (Chris), Barb (Dan), Mary, and Tim (Cindy). Alice has 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Irene Paape and was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Marie Bast, three older brothers: Ewald, Carl and Herman, and her brother-in-law, Edward Paape.

Alice and Ray were world travelers. They went to Canada for his internship, spent time in Waverly at Wartburg College, then Princeton NJ where Ray completed his PhD. In 1957 they, along with infant Mary and toddlers Bill and Barb, sailed to India as Lutheran missionaries at Gurukul Theological Seminary in Madras (now Chennai) for 11 years with a 1963-64 furlough at Harvard in Cambridge MA. Son Tim was born in Madras. In 1969 they returned to Dubuque where Ray was on the faculty of Wartburg Theological Seminary until retirement. Alice completed her Master’s degree at Clarke College and taught in Dubuque parochial and public schools. They were long standing, active members of Holy Trinity Lutheran church.

Ray and Alice both wrote autobiographies that detail the fascinating experiences and challenges they faced together over the years. It is impressive how Alice devoted herself to supporting Ray and the children in a variety of unfamiliar and challenging settings including the mission field, boarding school for the children at Kodai School 300 miles from Madras, and a return to India at remote Benagaria in 1985. There were many other US and international trips both for Ray’s work and their scattered children, including visits to Australia where Bill and Chris lived.

Alice loved life. She was known for her hospitality and winning smile. Her family is grateful to everyone at Luther Manor and Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care. Alice willed that her body be donated to the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be welcomed at Wartburg Theological Seminary, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and/or Luther Manor, Dubuque, Iowa.

Eldon C. Glick

Eldon Charles Glick of Galena passed away on July 28, three days after his 93rd birthday.

Eldon was born July 25, 1928, to Walter and Edith (Schaber) Glick. He graduated from Galena High School in 1946 and he married Carol (Westemeier) Glick in 1956.  Together they had a daughter, Nancy (Glick) Lewis.

Eldon worked as a masonry superintendent most of his early life and he was a member of the Bricklayers Union #31 for over 50 years.  After his bricklaying years, Eldon became a downtown business owner and eventually becoming the President of the Galena Chamber of Commerce, an officer of the BlackhillsTourism Council, and was elected Vice President of the Illinois Tourism Council. Eldon’s motto was “Remember the Past, Look to the Future”.  Eldon was a member of the Galena City Council and his idea of earmarking 10% of each year’s hotel/motel tax for state tourism promotion became law.  Eldon worked hard for tourism in Galena and took every step necessary to keep Galena in tack to preserve the rich heritage of its priceless architecture.

As a hobby, Eldon became interested in antiques and especially Galena Pottery. He opened an antique store on Main Street in Galena and later one in Woodbine. At one point in time, his store was both the oldest and newest store on Main Street when his daughter and her husband took ownership. Eldon was an active member of the Elks for over 70 years and was a Past District Deputy, Grand Exalted Ruler.

Eldon is survived by his daughter Nancy Lewis and two granddaughters: Natalie Berger and Simina Lewis.  Eldon was preceded in death by his wife, parents and four brothers: Wayne, Marlan, Clifford, and Elsworth.

Marilyn F. Jenkins

Marilyn F. Jenkins, age 80, of Dubuque, Iowa, completed her earthly journey on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at home, surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Marilyn’s life, her Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Hope Church, 11893 J.F.K. Road in Dubuque.  Family and friends of Marilyn’s may visit from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the church.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Marilyn’s family.

Marilyn was born on May 23, 1941, in Plymouth, New Hampshire, 1 of 4 children to Harold Merton and Frances Sylvia (Ashley) Chesley and 3 half siblings born to Harold Merton and Helen Priscilla (Hall) Chesley. Marilyn grew up a strong independent woman who learned to rely on Christ’s guidance through the stages of her life.  She was a dedicated mother of 2 children and instilled in them the faith in Christ that has guided them in their lives to this day.  In her earlier years, Marilyn spent many years as an elementary school teacher, enjoying every opportunity to impart not only knowledge, but memories as well, into her students.  She also spent some time as a homemaker and case manager serving the elderly in her community, and even found the time later in her life to work on spreading the Good News while teaching troubled teens.  Marilyn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend who never met a stranger.  She was the ultimate prayer warrior, regularly spending hours in prayer for anyone she knew needed it, even through to her very last days.  The sorrow we feel today comes only as a result of the unwavering love which Marilyn continually poured out upon everyone she met.  Our hope is in the loving grace that our Lord and Savior so graciously offers to us all, and we know that Marilyn is resting in eternal peace currently as His promises have now been realized.    We are so glad that she got to hear “Well done My good and faithful servant”.

Some of Marilyn’s favorite sayings were:
“Write your plans in pencil and give God the eraser”
“This is just my next adventure with the Lord”
“Keep one step BEHIND Jesus”
“Lord glorify Yourself through this”

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Marilyn include,
