Janell M. Temperley

Janell M. Temperley, 71, of East Dubuque, IL passed away on March 29th, 2021 at Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI.

A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 24th, 2021 in East Dubuque Cemetery, East Dubuque, IL. A celebration of Janell’s life will follow from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 24th, 2021 at Happy’s Place, 2323 Rockdale Road. Online condolences may be left at www.leonardfuneralhome.com. Janell was born on December 8, 1949 in Dubuque, IA the daughter of Gerald and Virginia (Lenstra) Kieffer. She graduated from Wahlert High School in 1968. She married Kenneth “Jake” Temperley on August 10, 1990 in Dubuque, IA.

She worked for American Trust and Savings Bank in Dubuque for many years, retiring in 2011. She was a board member for the East Dubuque Library and previous member of Key City Corvette Club.

Janell enjoyed reading; loved to travel, the beach, corvette rides and Jimmy Buffett. She had a green thumb and rescued many of her daughter’s plants over the years. She looked forward to her Thursday ‘wine’ nights with her sister-in-law, Deb.

Janell’s granddaughters were everything to her as well as her grand-dog Maizy. Her granddaughters lovingly called her “Mimi” and she taught them to be DIVA’s and her infamous eye-roll!! She spent many hours in the kitchen teaching them how to cook and bake. Even though she gave them whatever they wanted she made them earn it by doing chores.

She is survived by her husband Ken; her only daughter “sweet child of mine” Melissa (Ryan) Gilbert; granddaughters Lexi and Ava all of East Dubuque. Her siblings: Sandi Baker, of Scottsdale, AZ, Jolene (Steve) Humke, of Dubuque, IA, Paul Kieffer, of Dubuque, IA, Jill Law of Scottsdale, AZ; Jackie (Steve) Kettmann, of Bellevue, IA and sister-in-law Diane Kieffer, of Dubuque. Her mother-in-law Velda Temperley, of East Dubuque, IL along with in-laws: Darlene (Bill) Schiele, of Denton, TX, Robert (Bonnie) Temperley, of Clinton, IA, James (Janet) Temperley, of Bonita Springs, FL, Terry (Deb) Temperley, of East Dubuque, IL, Randy (Jayne) Temperley, of East Dubuque, IL and Tim Temperley, of Dallas, Texas; along with many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Janell was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Sharon Kieffer, brother Scott Kieffer, her niece Shayne (Kieffer) Roth, father-in-law Douglas Temperley, her former husband and father to Melissa, Ronnie Weber.

Elizabeth J. Weydert

Elizabeth J. “Betty” Weydert, 96, of Dubuque died Sunday, April 11, 2021. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:15 Monday, April 19th at the Church of the Nativity followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, masks and social distancing will be required during the Visitation and Mass. The Mass will be live-streamed on the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory Facebook page. Committal service will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at a later date.

Betty was born June 22, 1924 in Dubuque, daughter of William and Lulu (Groff) Grabow. On October 21, 1967 she married Melvin Weydert at the Church of the Nativity. He preceded her in death on August 10, 1988.

Betty was a life-long member of the Church of the Nativity and Rosary Society. She was a past volunteer at Finley Hospital. She helped take care of her parents for all of their lives.

Betty enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Betty was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ralph and Robert Grabow.

Ron Mussehl

Ron Mussehl, 61, of Asbury, died Monday, April 12, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, April 15, 2021, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road. The family welcomes those in attendance to wear shirts that represent Ron’s favorite sports teams and, of course, shorts. Ronald was born July 20, 1959, in Manchester, the son of Arthur Otto and Phyllis June Matthews Mussehl. On August 27, 1994, he married Kelly Sue McDonald in Dubuque.

He was a 1977 graduate of West Delaware High School in Manchester and 1980 graduate of NICC in Peosta.

Ron owned and operated Ron’s Discount Smokes and Beverage Centers, Plaza 20 BP, and Ron’s 5 Point Mart. He retired October of 2020 due to his health.

He was an active member of Church of the Resurrection. He served on the Board of Directors of Dupaco Credit Union and other various committees at Dupaco. He was currently on the raffle committee for Holy Family Circle of Celebration. He previously served on the board of Camp Albrecht Acres and was a former member of Westside Business Association. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Miami Dolphins. He enjoyed numerous trips to Las Vegas, golfing, socializing, and his weekly coffee group. He was known around town as the guy that wore shorts year round and he knew no stranger. In his final weeks, he proudly became a grandpa to his precious granddaughter, Payten.

He is survived by his wife, Kelly; one daughter, Amy (Daniel) Schroeder of Bellevue; one son, Tyler Mussehl of Coralville; one granddaughter, Payten Schroeder; his mother, Phyllis Mussehl of Dubuque; two brothers, Tim Mussehl of Urbandale, and Brian (Deb) Mussehl of Muscatine; his mother-in-law, Gladys McDonald of Dubuque; brother- and sister-in-laws, Carey (Larry) Schilling of Epworth, Jay (Jean) McDonald, Mark McDonald, and Todd (Tara) McDonald all of Dubuque; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Mussehl and father-in-law, James McDonald.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established per Ron’s request.

Debra S. Farrey

Debra S. “Debi” Farrey, 63, of Benton, Wisconsin, died Sunday, April 11, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2021, at Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, Wisconsin, with Rev. Richard Cook officiating. Services will be live streamed through Facebook on the funeral home page. A public visitation for friends will be held from 1-4:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family requests you utilize masks during the duration of your visit and that you practice social distancing.

Debi was born on May 8, 1957, in Wabasha, Minnesota, the daughter of Lyle and Ethel (La Pean) Richardson. She graduated in 1976 from Western Dubuque High School in Iowa. Shortly after, she met the love of her life, Dan, while he was playing in the band in Bernard, Iowa. Debi asked him for his drumsticks and that is when their lives changed forever. Debi and Dan married on June 18, 1977 at St. Patrick’s Church in Benton, Wisconsin. They welcomed two daughters, Lisa and Sara.

Debi was Dan’s biggest supporter while he coached basketball in Benton and continued to play in the band for many years. She also attended every sporting event, school function, or life event for each of her daughters. She was their biggest cheerleader even if she didn’t have a full understanding of the sport.  She was always willing and able to help where needed. She did everything from helping with the concession stands at sporting events to chaperoning class trips even if her daughters weren’t in that class. Her contagious laughter along with free spirited attitude made her such a joy to be around.

Debi was blessed with three grandsons whom she cherished and adored. They could do no wrong in her eyes.  She always looked forward to her witty and sarcastic conversations with her sons-in-law.  She really just enjoyed each and every moment with all of them. She was so proud to be a Farrey Godmother to her nieces, Jeni and Katie, as well as her grandson, Alex.

Debi was employed for many years at both Target in Dubuque, IA, and Lands End in Dodgeville, WI. Her most enjoyable jobs were doing in-home daycare and working at Friendly Frogs Child Care in Platteville, WI. She loved babies, so working as a teacher in the baby room brought her so much joy, day in and day out.

In her spare time, Debi enjoyed camping, crafting and dancing the night away. She also spent numerous hours having a good ol’ time with all of her brothers and sisters on the Little Lyles’ Group Chat.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel Farrey, Benton; two daughters, Lisa (Mervin) Nagle, Montello, WI, and Sara (James) Phelps, Colesburg, IA; three grandsons, Jason Garski, Hunter Phelps, and Alex Phelps; her mother, Ethel Richardson, Eau Claire, WI; three sisters, Dianna (Steve) Brantner, Mondovi, WI, Cheryl Alme Bysong, Pepin, WI, and Suellen (Brad) Goering, Franklin, TN; three brothers, Michael (Maureen) Richardson, Blaine, MN, Mark (Julie) Richardson, Clinton, IA, and Scott (Dawn) Richardson, Twin Falls, ID; mother-in-law, Gladys Farrey, sister-in-law, Susan Farrey, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sharon and Bill Bastian, all of Benton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lyle Richardson; a sister, Melissa Richardson; a brother, Milan Richardson; father-in-law, Dale Farrey; and friends, Eileen and Bernie O’Connell.

We would like to thank all the staff at MercyOne Dubuque, especially Dr. Holm and the oncology nurses for all their many efforts over the last three and a half years. Also a special thanks to Dr. Kristy Willis at Medical Associates in Cuba City, as well as the Benton First Responders and Hazel Green EMS.

John R. Anglin

John R. “Jack” Anglin, 93, 1170 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, IA, passed away on April 10, 2021 at Mount Carmel Bluffs.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 14th, 2021 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church with Rev. Thomas McDermott officiating. Family and friends may gather after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at the church until time of Mass. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Otter Creek. Jack was born on January 20, 1928 in Jackson County, Iowa the son of Francis and Agnes (Laughlin) Anglin. He attended school in rural Jackson County and graduated from St. Columbkille’s High School in Dubuque. He served in the US Navy at the end of WWII and was a member of the American Legion.

He worked as salesman at several automotive centers over the years. Jack loved his family and friends above all else. He was a longtime fan of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes; a member of the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame in recognition of his many years as an umpire; served on the Western Dubuque School Board.; a member of the Dubuque Barbershoppers and parish choir; a trusted tire salesman and friend to many with whom he worked.

He is survived by his wife Laverne (Mahoney) Anglin; his children, Robert (Diane Kadaverek) Anglin; Diane (Ruben) Forner; Sr. Lou Anglin, BVM; his brother Carl Anglin; grandchildren include Gen Anglin (Alex Schmidt); Tanya (Jason) Hirsch, Kate Forner (TJ Tambelinni), Nik Forner, Marc (Aubrey) Forner, and Josie Anglin; great grandchildren include Cody Hirsch, Josie Hirsch, Connor Schmidt, Townes Tambellini, Ben Forner, Westin Forner along with many devoted nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frank & Agnes; in-laws John & Mamie Mahoney; son Patrick; his sisters Doris Alt and Joanne Heiderscheit; his in-laws Eleanor & Walter Metcalf, Ethel & Joe McAndrew, Merlin & Marian Mahoney, Sister-in-law Luane Anglin, brothers-in-law Mel Alt and Jim Heiderscheit

Irene Cisneros

Irene Cisneros, 65, of Dubuque, died Friday, April 9, 2021, at the MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center in Dubuque.

The Funeral Service for Irene will be 4:00 pm Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service with Elder Brandon Kacere officiating. Irene was born October 20, 1955, in San Antonio, TX, the daughter of Jesus Cisneros and Carmen Sendejas.

She worked as a seamstress and as a C.N.A.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was artistically talented, very creative, and an excellent seamstress.

Survivors include two daughters, Carmelita (Mark Burge) Cisneros of Waunakee, WI and Melissa (David) Soldani of Belle Chasse, LA; one son, Michael (Lara) Cisneros of Wisconsin Dells, WI; five grandchildren, Taylor, Thomas, Caira, Coree, Cannon; numerous brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister.

Anna M. Smith

Anna M. Smith, 83, of Dubuque, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Hawkeye Care Center surrounded by family.

To honor Anna’s life a funeral service will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at Dubuque Bible Church, 3500 Pennsylvania Ave with Ernie Geeting and Rev. Don Smith, Jr. officiating.  Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.  Friends may call from 9am until 11am,  Wednesday at the church.  The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road is assisting the family. Anna was born on May 1,1937, in Dubuque, daughter of Eugene and Viola (Arnsdorff) Scheckel.  She married the love of her life Galen Smith on October 5, 1957 in Savanna, Illinois.  Their 63 years of marriage were filled with faith, hope, love and joy.  Anna had a heart of gold and will be remembered as a kind and loving person.  She was a woman of strong faith and was a longtime member of Dubuque Bible Church.

She enjoyed flower arranging, traveling, and cooking, especially the gourmet foods she made for the Gourmet Club.

She and Galen were always together, even at work.  Together they owned and operated a jewelry shop and picture framing business.  They enjoyed traveling to gem and jewelry shows and would stop to eat at a favorite restaurant along the way.

Anna is survived by her husband, Galen Smith; children, Cindy (Roger) Lien and Randy (Natalie) Smith; grandchildren, Loni (Josh) Klaas, Cody Smith, Caitlin (Patrick) Bradshaw and Courtney Carton; great-grandchildren, Justin, Ashlee, Skyler, and Libbie Klaas, Brooke and Landon Bradshaw.

She is also survived by her siblings, Allan (Karen) Scheckel and Gladys O’Brian; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Anna was preceded in death by her sisters, Lilian(Mike) Hird, Margaret (Walter)Spoerre, Mary (Barney) Wiegel and Alice (Paul) Loeffelholz;  a sister-in-law, Kay Scheckel;  a nephew, Pat Scheckel;  and a brother-in-law, Bob O’Brian.

Ronald D. Kussmaul

Ronald D. Kussmaul, 79, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2021 at the Bell Tower Retirement Community in East Dubuque. There will be no public visitation or service.  The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque is assisting the family.

Ron was born on January 30, 1942 at East St. Louis, IL, the son of Fred and Frieda (Simms) Kussmaul of Dupo, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Johanna.  Ron is survived by a brother, Don Kussmaul of East Dubuque; sons, Ronald McPherson, wife Nicole, and granddaughters Brittany and Alexandra; and great-grandsons Damion Minton and Wyatt Elizondo all from the greater Detroit, Michigan area, and Steve McPherson, wife Alicia, and granddaughter Brandi and grandsons Zachary and Matthew McPherson of Miramar Beach, Florida.

Ron served in the United States Air Force from 1959 – 1963 in Southeast Asia. He returned home and began a career in ministry that would be his life for some 45 years of which 37 years would be spent in South Africa, and surrounding countries spreading the Lord’s Word.  He came to East Dubuque to live some 6 years ago with his brother Don.  He found East Dubuque to be his final home and that small town home that he had been seeking.  Ron was a member of the East Dubuque Lion’s Club.

Louis M. Smothers

Louis Merle Smothers, 82, of Dubuque, died Saturday, April 10, 2021, at his home in Dubuque surrounded by family.

Louis was born August 9, 1938, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Louis and Loretta (Stecklein) Smothers. On October 15, 1961, he married Dorothy Agnes Kegler in Holy Ghost Catholic Church.

Louis attended Dubuque Senior High School until his enlistment in the United States Army.

He was a machinist at John Deere Dubuque Works until his retirement after 30 years of employment.

Louis enjoyed CB radios, fishing, music, the Kansas City Chiefs and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Dubuque; two sons, Mark (Amy) Smothers of Peosta and Matt Smothers of Dubuque; one daughter, Cindy Merz of Potosi, WI; seven grandchildren, Rachael, Caleigh, Carly, Ben, Samantha, Cameron, and Tia; two great-grandchildren, Lucius and Christian and two half sisters, Charlotte and Jean.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Merle.

William O. Miller, Jr.

William O. Miller, Jr., 60, of Platteville, Wisconsin, died Friday, April 9, 2021, at Lancaster Health Services in Lancaster, Wisconsin.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is assisting the family.

William was born on September 25, 1960, in Monroe, Wisconsin, the son of William O. and Everly A. (Dransfield) Miller Sr.  William spent most of his childhood in Brodhead, Wisconsin.  He served his country in the US Army.  William was a jack of all trades but as he liked to say “a master of none.”  He worked for a number of years as a master cook at the Dubuque Rescue Mission.

William donated his time and what little money he had to causes that were important to him.  He was a member of Wisconsin Public Broadcasting as well as the Arbor Day Foundation.  He loved to plant trees, harvest walnuts, and feed the birds.  The birds flocked to his yard, due to the multiple bird feeders he maintained.  His beloved dog, Christie, and parakeets brought him many hours of happiness.  His greatest joy was baking for others.  He provided his neighbors with cookies for every holiday, but began to plan his Christmas baking in the spring of every year, so that he could have enough for all the people that mattered so much to him.  Cookies and other baked goods were not only given to his neighbors, but also to the local Senior Center.  He delighted in giving these treats to so many that he considered family.  He looked forward to his weekly grocery shopping trips with his neighbor, Mike, who had become like a brother to him.  Summer campfires in the backyard with friends was his favorite place to spend a summer evening.  William was always ready to help whenever and wherever needed.  He was one of those souls who looked forward to the snow each year so he could give back to those who were there for him, by shoveling their sidewalks and driveways.  He will be greatly missed by his neighbors and friends, to whom he had become so much more than a friend.

Survivors include Lindsey Derrig, who, while not a daughter by blood, became like a daughter to him, Dubuque, IA; his neighbors and friends, who became like family to him, Mike and Cheryl Schmieder, Ruth Hinzmann, Dick Griffin, Lynnette Dornak and Jon Meidinger, all of Platteville, WI; his half sisters, Penny (Rodney) Olson, Beloit, WI, Everly (Dennis) Fisher, Prentice, WI, and Nancy (William) Heidenrich, Monroe, WI; and his brothers, Daniel Miller, Madison, WI and Jack (Tracy) Miller, Rio, WI; and his half brother, Bruce Nehls, Brodhead, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a half brother, Harry Nehls; a sister-in-law, Bev Nehls; and his beloved dog, Jake.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the William O Miller Memorial Fund and sent to the funeral home at 123 N. Jackson St., Cuba City, WI  53807.

William P. Shaffer

William P. “Bill” Shaffer, 81, of St Ansgar, Iowa, passed away December 30, 2020, at MercyOne in Waterloo. To celebrate Bill’s life, family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Due to COVID-19 concerns, all who attend will be required to wear a face covering, and are asked to please maintain social distancing practices. To honor Bill’s life, funeral services will be held immediately following the visitation at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday at Behr Funeral Home.

Bill was born June 9, 1939, in Dubuque, son of William and Edna (Maas) Shaffer. He was one of 14 children. Bill worked several places, but always shared his memories of Painting Water Towers and working on the Eagle Point Toll Bridge. He retired from Mount St. Francis in Dubuque after 25 years in Maintenance. Bill loved the land and the river. He lived in his house boat and then in his cottage on the Mississippi River for over 30 years. He stayed active outdoors cutting wood, but his true passion was fishing. He carried his pole and tackle box in his car and would stop anywhere and throw out a line. In 2010, his health slowed him down and he moved to Northwood, Iowa in 2013, where he made new friends. In 2019, he moved into the Good Samaritan Center in St Ansgar. Bill enjoyed living at Good Sam and made lots of friends. He liked all of the Nurses and Staff there. Bill was quite the character and his sense of humor, happy go lucky attitude and singing and dancing will be missed by everyone.

Those left behind to cherish his memories are his children, Brenda, Sally (Zeke), Russ and Amy (Brian), 6 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and his siblings Shirley, Clarence, Jimmy (Rose) and Harold (Sue).

He was preceded in death by his son, Paul (2005), his son-in-law, Russ (1993), his parents, William and Edna, and his siblings Alice, Irvin, Donald, John “Jack”, Rita, Mary, Lorraine, Leonard, and Richard “Dick”.

Shirley A. Frommelt

Shirley A. Frommelt, age 82, of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, completed her earthly journey on April 6, 2021, at home, surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Shirley’s life, a private family service is being held.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Shirley’s family.

Shirley was born on January 20, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter to John and Arletta (Henning) Speaker.  She learned from a very early age which of the moments in life would truly bring her joy throughout the rest of her journey; family, friends, animals, and the outdoors.  Shirley met the love of her life, Roger Frommelt, in high school and the couple was eventually united in marriage shortly after in 1958.  Within a year they had found a beautiful homestead in the country where they raised their family and enjoy each and every day to the fullest.  Shirley spent over 20 years working outside of the home at Loras College, but she would willingly admit that her heart was always at home through each and every day.  Shirley always had a special place in her heart for her beloved pets, especially Toby and Kiki, but her horses would take a 2^nd place to none as well.  She always enjoyed the rodeo years with the kids when they were younger and the memories they made still bring a smile and a chuckle to those sitting around the table reminiscing yet today.  Shirley’s most treasured times were spent camping, fishing, and lounging in the sun with her family and most cherished friend, Rita. After over 40 years of practice, Shirley was never quite able to perfect her cast, but with her positive and dedicated character, she was more than ecstatic to cast her pole in anytime.  Shirley loved and adored her family and friends with the full might of her being.  Her heart was as big as it was kind, compassionate, and gentle with a touch of spice, too. Thankfully, the collection of wonderful memories she leaves behind today will help to heal the broken hearts of all who knew and loved her.  It’s difficult to imagine facing the days ahead without our strong and fun-loving matriarch at the helm, but we trust that the Lord will keep her safe in His loving arms until we meet again.  Thank you, Shirley, for teaching us that some of the most valuable lessons in life can also be some of the most rewarding. We will continue to carry your warmhearted spirit with us by loving ever so deeply, laughing often, and always taking time to stop and enjoy the little things. “In life, we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place, no one else will ever fill.” Until we meet again.

Ronald L. Schaal

Ronald “Ron” “Ronnie” L. Schaal, Sr., 92, was promoted to glory on April 9, 2021.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 17 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, with Captain Matt Phelps officiating. The funeral service will be live-streamed on the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery where Military Honors will be conducted. A visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, Friday, April 16 and from 9:00 to 9:45 AM, Saturday at the funeral home. Masks and social distancing are required.

Ron was born on November 21, 1928 in Cassville, WI, to Roy and Alice (Greenwood) Schaal.

He married the love of his life, Joan “JoAnne” N. Nicholls on May 9, 1952 and started their family. In their nearly 69 years of marriage they gave all their loving energy to raising Ron Jr., Milton and Cindy. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather.

He joined the United States Navy at the age of 16 where he served in Norfolk, Virginia during WWII. He retired from John Deere Dubuque Works after 28 years in 1986.

He drove stock cars, enjoyed hunting and Canada fishing. They camped at Lake Joy Campground where he spent summers fishing and making camper friends. They eventually moved their campers to their land in Millville Township, Grant County, WI, where they spent time in “God’s Country” with family and friends, and where their daughter, Cindy and family resides.

Those left to celebrate his memory are his wife, Joan; children, Ron Jr., (Ann) and Cindy (Gary) Stoney; grandchildren, Jason Schaal, Art (Tammy) Stoney, Amy (Adam) Leeser and Dawn Schaal; great- grandchildren, David, Daniel, and Milana Schaal; siblings, Bruce (Annabelle) Schaal, and Leola Skaife; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded to glory by his son, Milton; daughter-in-law, Dorothy; parents; father and mother-in law, Chet (Lucy) Nicholls; and brother-in-law, Richard Skaife.

Ron’s family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, staff at Luther Manor, and the friends and neighbors who cared for him. Also, thank you to Major Tom Mason and Captain Matt Phelps of the Salvation Army for their spiritual guidance and friendship.

His life will be fondly remembered and treasured.

Lloyd J. Welter

Lloyd Joseph Welter “LJW”, 84, of Monticello, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2021, at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade.

Visitation will be held from 3 – 8 pm Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello.  Visitation will continue Wednesday from 9:30 – 10:30 am at the funeral home prior to Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello.  Rev. Paul Baldwin will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors.  Services will be live streamed via the Sacred Heart Facebook page.  Masks are required at Mass and social distancing is encouraged.

Lloyd was born January 3, 1937, at the Monticello Hospital in Monticello, IA to John and Rose (Kramer) Welter.   He grew up with three brothers on the family farm a few miles south of Monticello where he later made his family home.  Lloyd graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Monticello in 1954 and was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve as a Communications Specialist stationed in Europe from 1956-1958.  During his two-year military service Lloyd survived several life-threatening events and typical of him, came through them more optimistic and adventurous than before.

Upon his return from the Army, Lloyd attended Loras College in Dubuque.  He met his future wife, Joyce Kronlage at a dance at the Prairiemoon Ballroom.  The two were married on October 5, 1963, in Prairieburg, and began building what would become a large and wonderful family with six children.

In the 1980’s Lloyd was affected like many in the farm crisis, but true to his nature, Lloyd stood through the adversity and pivoted by creating a new business initially as Farmstead Builders.  He subsequently started the 40-year-old business of Welter Storage Equipment Company created new opportunity for Lloyd’s family, communities throughout Iowa, and specifically Monticello, Cedar Rapids and Dubuque.

The saying that “Everyone lives but few have the courage to really live” applied to Lloyd. He really enjoyed collecting antique cars, tractors and trucks, attending the Great Jones County Fair, and driving around Monticello.  He was a long-time member of the Lion’s Club.  More descriptive of Lloyd was his love for his family, his friends, community and people in general.  He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his lake Delhi cabin and twenty winters in their Florida home.  The social aspect of Lloyd’s life was paramount to his perspective and he engaged people of all walks through his genuine interest in their lives and stories.

Lloyd’s time in Europe ignited his interest in the world and travel.  After his career was stabilized, Lloyd and his wife Joyce travelled throughout the world.  Lloyd’s interest was in the people of the world more than the places and those travels impacted his life very positively.  He loved collecting items from other countries that reminded him of their unique culture.

Lloyd and Joyce’s children include Ronald (Lori) Welter, David (Shar) Welter, Robert (Julie) Welter, and Donna (Dan) Sauser, all of Monticello, Mary (Charles) Dirks of North Liberty and Dean (Kathy) Welter of Cedar Rapids.   They have 18 grandchildren aged 11 to 28; Dylan, Tasia, Kelli, Jessi, John, Maci, Nick, Blake, Brooke, Drew, Reginald, Cole, & Luke Welter, Taylor (Andrew) Gomez, Jack Berg, Kyle, Nathan & Ella Sauser; siblings: Jerry (Ruth) Welter and Don (Karen) Welter; in-laws: Mag Welter, Tom Kronlage, Janet Fredericks and Audrey (George) Bethell.

He is preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Louis and Mabel Kronlage, grandson, Kyle Sauser brother, Eldon Welter; in-laws: Jane Kronlage and Roger Fredericks.

Lloyd’s family was his true love and the joy he experienced with them was evident to all.  His wish was always for their success, individuality and their freedom to live their lives completely.  Lloyd’s life was a life “well lived” and he was an example for us all to take action towards the purpose of our lives.  In the end, he will be remembered for how he influenced our lives positively and gifts he offered in the form of his life by example.  He was very much a leader and he engendered an understanding of hope and possibility in those who knew him best.  We are better for loving and knowing him.

Anne M. Sweeney

Anne Mary Sweeney, 81 formerly of Bernard, Iowa and current resident of Seventh Heaven Adult Family Home in Dubuque, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2021.

A mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 13th, 2021 at St. Joseph The Worker catholic Church with Rev. James Goerend officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Family and friends may gather after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the church until time of mass. A recording of the funeral mass will be available on Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory’s Facebook page following the mass.

Memorials may be given to the Parkinson’s Foundation, St. Joseph the Worker Church or charity of your choice.

Anne was born March 8, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of James and Mae (Kingsley) Sweeney. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque in 1959.

Anne lived a long and full life on the Sweeney family farm caring for her animals and companion Dobermans. Anne enjoyed several trips to Ireland with her sister Mary Claire. When health issues required assisted living, she moved into Seventh Heaven in Dubuque. The Sweeney family is grateful to Mary and Junior Elliott for providing a happy and loving home for Anne’s final 6 years at Seventh Heaven.

Anne was preceded in death by parents James and Mae Sweeney and siblings Robert, Dr. William, and Mary Claire, BVM.
