Matthew P. Gasper Sr.
Matthew P. “Matt” Gasper Sr., age 79, of Dubuque, was called home suddenly at 2:09 p.m., on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital. Because of the unprecedented conditions in our country right now due to the COVID-19 virus, private family services will be held at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. The family will thankfully receive your support through phone calls, greeting cards and online condolences left at www.behrfuneralhome.com. A visitation and Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church at a later date. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Matt was born on July 25, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Peter and Marcella “Sally” (Sahm) Gasper.
Matt attended school at Holy Ghost Grade School, and went on to graduate from Dubuque Senior High School. After graduation, Matt went on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Army. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Shirley Klein, on October 2, 1965, at St. Joseph Church in Rickardsville, Iowa. Matt was a dedicated employee who began his career working at Dubuque Stamping and Manufacturing for 10 years. In 1969, he would get hired at the John Deere Dubuque Works, where he would devote 32 years until his well earned retirement in 2001. He also served on the Board of Directors with Holy Ghost Credit Union for 16 years. When he wasn’t working, Matt enjoyed spending time downstairs in his work shop. He was an accomplished woodworker who has created countless projects throughout the years for family and friends. At Shirley’s “gentle urging”, Matt agreed to take some time away from his projects, taking several trips and spending time at their cabin at Leisure Lake. He enjoyed spending time outside and he and Shirley were avid walkers. Matt was a very devout Catholic as was evidenced by his long time membership and commitment to volunteer work with Holy Ghost Church. Matt was selfless, and the most giving man you will ever meet, he loved helping people with his time and talents and never wanted any reward for doing so. Above all, Matt’s family was always the most important aspect of his life and he was always sure that Shirley and each and every one of the children and grandchildren knew how much he loved them. Having the whole family together brought him great joy, especially on “junk party” nights. We are heartbroken at the sudden loss of Matt in our daily lives, but are thankful for all of the memories we have created throughout the years and will cherish forever.

John C. Andresen
John C. Andresen, 81, of Dubuque, died Friday, April 3, 2020, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.
Our dear husband, dad and grandpa deserves a beautiful tribute. However, in this unknown time with the COVID-19 pandemic, having a public visitation is not possible. Please be with us in prayer. A celebration of his life will be at a later date.
John was born July 13, 1938, in Dubuque, the son of Wilfred J. and Geraldine R. Ott Andresen. On November 9, 1963, he married Donna Therese Whelan in St. Raphael Cathedral.
John was born with a congenital heart condition and was not expected to survive. He was one of the first patients to have an open heart surgery in Iowa City in 1960. He survived 4 open heart surgeries, and numerous other ailments. We don’t know what it was that he succumbed to, but we know what kept him alive; his easy going manner and his acceptance of life’s circumstances.
With the help of his wife, he opened the Honest John’s family of stores, which include the Trading Post, Emporium, Union Leather, Beyond The Horizon in Galena, and HJ’s Fashion Emporium in Dubuque.
John was an avid New York Yankee and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He spent much of his time on his different crafts and hobbies. He was most proud of his Civil War series of cross stitch pictures which combined his love of history and creativity. His great sense of humor and his positive outlook on life left memories we all cherish. He loved his winters in Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; two sons, Don Andresen of East Dubuque, IL and Steve (Diana) Andresen of Galena, IL; one daughter, Terri (Dana) Meadows of East Dubuque, IL; one grandson, Stuart Meadows; three granddaughters, Anna Meadows, Zhenyia Fager, and Julia Andresen; one sister, Mary Mulgrew of Dubuque; and numerous nieces and nephews, each of who were his favorite.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Margaret Dodds, five brothers Bill, Jim, Dick, Tom. His last brother Paul, died 12 hours prior to John’s passing.
A special thank you to the numerous health care professionals who kept John with us for many extra years. Listing them all would be too numerous. We would like to recognize and thank the cardiac staff at Iowa City, who treated him from childhood and who performed many of his open heart surgeries, as well as his most recent doctors, Dr Nachtman, Dr Ringold, Julie Ehlinger ARNP, the emergency room and the hospital staff at Mercy. Jean R. Schwendinger
Jean R. Schwendinger, age 79 of Dubuque, Iowa, completed her earthly journey on April 2, 2020 at ManorCare Health Services in Dubuque. To honor Jean’s life, a private family service is being held. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Jean’s family.
Jean was born on March 16, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa, one of 9 children to Raymand and Marie (Hahn) Manahl. She spent her formative years surrounded by family and friends and would embrace their importance in her daily life throughout her 79 years. She eventually found her true-love, John J. Schwendinger, and the two were united in marriage on July 30, 1960, and, in time, blessed with 3 children of their own. They faced the world together as a united front and the love that they shared continues to be found within the generation who now follow their lead. Jean did spend about a decade of her time outside of the home working in the housekeeping department at the Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino. She was a devoted and faithful worker, but would openly admit that her favorite hours there where definitely when she was off the clock.
Jean lived a full and abundant life. She was always cheering on her St. Louis Cardinals during the baseball season, but in between games was also perfectly content to sit down at the table to show off her card playing skills, or even to simply relax with her beloved dog, Spunky, by her side. But, undeniably, Jean’s greatest joy in this life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Going on vacations with them when they were young has left everyone with an abundance of wonderful memories to treasure and her unwavering devotion to each and every one of them made Jean the kind of grandma everyone dreams of having in their lives. We will miss our humble and beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, but we sadly accept that the Lord has greater things instore for her now. We will proudly carry on her legacy as we remain behind and trust that when we see her again, she will surely have kept herself in good company with her parents and siblings while waiting patiently for our arrival. Thank you, Jean, for everything that you’ve taught us through your words, thoughts and actions and may we slowly discover peace in the understanding that we were confidently entrusted into your arms as we began our journey’s here also.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Jean include,
her loving husband of 59 ½ years,
John Schwendinger, Dubuque, Iowa;
her 3 children,
Catherine Flores, Dubuque, Iowa,
Connie Schwendinger-Gruber, Dubuque, Iowa,
and James Schwendinger, Dubuqeu, Iowa;
her 8 adored grandchildren,
Antonio (Stefanie) Flores, North Liberty, Iowa,
Andrew Flores, Dubuque, Iowa,
Angelica Flores, Dubuque, Iowa,
Ryan (Dana) Gruber, Dubuque, Iowa,
Brandon Gruber, Dubuque, Iowa,

Kristina Gruber, St. Louis, Missouri,
and Adriana Flores, Dubuque, Iowa;
her 11 great-grandchildren,
Austin Venzke, Ava Flores, Aidan Kelly, Amelia Flores, Cruz Kelly, Andrew Flores, Emmett Gonzalez, Selena Flores, Dominic Soberanez, Alivia Gruber and John Flores;

along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbors.

Esther was a great party planner and a 4-H leader for 30 years. Esther and Glen enjoyed spending time at Lake Joy and CAV Park in Zephyrhills, Florida. Forever a gamer, Esther loved competition and games – Euchre, Crazy Clubs, Rummy, Poker, or more. Homemade game boards adorned her dining room. Esther could not clear her meals quick enough to get the games started. Card game tourneys in Florida, or horseshoes at Lake Joy were followed by S’Mores.
She loved her entire family, her husband, her children, grandchildren, her godchildren and great–grandchildren deeply. Her kindness, enthusiasm and commitment to her kids was always evident. She also loved her friends like family – as long as she could tell you what she thought. She had a heart as big as blackberry pie, and a backbone as tough as nails. As her grandchildren recall: A lot could be learned from a women like Grandma, still the best cook we’ve ever met, pleasuring tummies all over Grant County. There was always room for one more at her kitchen table.
The Egan home was a boarding house of sorts to uncles, aunts, cousins and some kin we really never knew. The East Bedroom was intended for guests. Some came for fun, others for rural life “structure”. They would stay a week, a summer, and even a couple for a year, including a couple from Costa Rica, Eluid (Louie) Calderon Badilla, who always remained a big part of her life.
