James R. Boyer

James R. “Jim” Boyer, 81, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at home.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2020 at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque. Social distancing will be required per Federal and State guidelines. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2020 at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque, IA, where military honors will be accorded by members of Dubuque American Legion Post # 6 and Amvets Post # 13.

Jim was born on November 13, 1938 in Dubuque, the son of Joseph and Freda (Ehrlich) Boyer. He was a 1957 graduate of Loras Academy. On November 29, 1968 he was united in marriage to Jean M. Wolf in Galena, IL. They were blessed with 51 years of marriage.
Jim joined the U. S. Army after graduation where he spent 10 years. He was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division with service all over the world. He was a Vietnam veteran having served two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He was a member of The Amvets Post # 3 of Dubuque for 48 years and had been Provost Marshall for all that time. Currently he was Commander of Post # 3. Also he served as Iowa State Amvet District Commander for the 3rd district and had been committee person for the Iowa State Amvets Service Foundation. Jim was a member of American Legion Post #6 in Dubuque. He was also involved with the Tri-State Veterans Memorial Association during the construction of “The Battle Bows” in Marshall Park.

Jim was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local # 91 Union for 40 years, with employment in most local shops and sheet metal shops throughout the country, retiring in January 2001.

He loved to garden and became an Illinois Master Gardner under the University of Illinois Extension program. There was a constant rivalry between him and a special friend as to who had the first and largest produce. Excesses always went to the family and friends.

Surviving is his wife, Jean; two sons, Jim (Katie) Boyer of Dubuque, IA, and Steve (Amy) Boyer of East Dubuque, IL; five precious grandchildren, Layne, Levi, Sienna, Veronika and Donovan; his sisters, Mary Schmitt of Dubuque and Carol (Mike) Murwin of West Des Moines, IA, brother, Mike Boyer of Dubuque; sisters-in-law, Jean Boyer of Milwaukee, Oregon, Beth Ward of Dubuque, Ann Wolf of Lake Placid, FL; brother-in-law, Ron (Judy) Wolf of Dubuque and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Freda; siblings, Norman, Joseph and Arthur; his in-laws, Ivan and Anita Wolf; sisters-in-law, Betty Boyer, Rowenna Boyer; brothers-in-law, William Wolf and Jerry Schmitt.

Jean and sons wish to extend thanks to the many Doctors at Medical Associates Clinic, the many Doctors at the Iowa City Veterans Hospital and a special thanks to so many at Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful care and compassion given to Jim and his family. “These are angels on earth.”

Jean Ellen (Eggers) Rockwell

Jean Ellen (Eggers) Rockwell, 87, of Bellevue, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2020.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, Friday, June 26, 2020 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bellevue. Family will greet friends 9:30 am until service time also Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bellevue. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Bellevue. Funeral Services will be live broadcast on Bellevue Cable Channel 38 and will be uploaded on SaintJohn Devotion YouTube Channel following the services. It is recommended to utilize masks during the visitation at the funeral home and at the funeral service and that you practice social distancing due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Jean Ellen was born March 17, 1933 the daughter of Arthur H. and Rosella (Felderman) Eggers south of Bellevue on the family farm. She graduated from Bellevue Community High School in 1951 and still to this day has many close and dear friends from her class. Jean Ellen married Almon “Rocky” Rockwell on April 15, 1956, he passed on January 19, 1995.

She worked in the family’s general store in Emeline, Iowa and in the Jackson County Clerk of Courts Office.

Jean Ellen was passionate when it came to playing Canasta and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Kevin Rockwell; 5 grandchildren, Nicole (Steve) Mooney, Ryan Elkins, Trevor (Amber) Rockwell, Whitney (Will) Heister, and Erik (Jill) Rockwell; 7 great-grandchildren, Clara, Ella Jean, Arthur and Campbell Rockwell, Abigail Jean and Noah Heister, and Sydney Mooney; a sister in-law, Norva Beaver; close (family), Greta, Dick, Peg, and Faye; and her “Angel” Dialysis Drivers; she is also survived by Curtis Rockwell and Kendra Elkins.

Jean Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter in-law, Sandra Rockwell; a sister, Arlene (Harlan) Glaser; a sister in infancy, Virginia Mae, and an infant sister.

 


 

Madonna M. Varner

Madonna M. Varner, 79, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 21, 2020 at her home.

A funeral mass celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, June 26, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Cremation will follow the visitation. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Madonna Mae Elsner was born in her grandparents, Charles and Lena Elsner’s farmhouse on January 18, 1941 near Iron Hill, Iowa in Jackson County. Her parents were Clarence and Thelma (Steines) Elsner. Her early education was spent at Esgate, Fulton, and Elwood. She graduated from Lost Nation High School in 1959. From the beginning she learned hard work, helping her mom in the garden, canning, cutting corn off the cob, and washing fruit jars and lids. She also learned to bake and cook and twice a week would bake bread as well as clean the house. She started babysitting at 12 years old and while in high school had house cleaning jobs.

This hard work would carry over into adulthood as she first worked for the Garment Factory in Clinton until it burnt down and then moved to Maquoketa where she worked for Schultz’s Bros. in Maquoketa and lastly as a CNA and in the Housekeeping Department for over 43 years at Maquoketa Care Center until present.

Madonna married Donald Varner on May 3, 1960 in Davenport, Iowa. To this marriage were born: Deborah, Mark and Michael. They later divorced.

Madonna was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. She loved to dance and country music, especially George Strait. She was an avid fan of Elvis Presley. She enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her family, special friends, and her great-grandchildren, Jentry, Jensyn, Langston, Kaley and Charlotte.

Those left to honor his memory include her children, Deborah (Bill) Bowling of Maquoketa, IA, Mark (Jody) Varner of Maquoketa, IA, and Mike (Bridget) Varner of Maquoketa, IA; 5 granddaughters, Billie (Chad) Johnson, Sarah (Joe) Larkin, Jennifer Bowling, Aleshia (Matt) Abraham, Kacie Varner; 5 great-grandchildren, Jentry Johnson, Jensyn Johnson, Langston Larkin, Kaley Larkin and Charlotte Abraham; brothers, Leonard (Linda) Elsner of Calamus, IA, and Bill (Shirley) Elsner of Stetsonville, WI; and sisters, Irma (Fred) Meyer of Maquoketa, IA, Mary (Roger) Eichelberger of Muscatine, IA, Carolyn (Duane) Hansen of DeWitt, IA, and Jean Todtz of Goose Lake, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Thelma Elsner, paternal grandparents Charles and Lena Elsner and maternal grandparents William and Loretta Steines, and a great-granddaughter Jenner Jo Johnson.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Madonna Mae Varner memorial fund has been established.

Randy J. Shireman Jr.

Randy J. Shireman Jr., age 50 passed away on June 15, 2020 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his son and loving partner Lisa. Randy had been battling sickness for a few short months.

His strength will forever be unmatched, and stories will be passed down about the courage he possessed up until the very moment the Lord offered him rest.

Randy graduated from Central Alternative high School. He was a master carpenter and had spent the last several years building houses in Oregon where he and his family lived. He loved nature and enjoyed taking his son on hikes in the beautiful scenery of Oregon.

He touched many lives and he will be missed more than words can express. Randy is survived by his 8-year-old son Daniel; his loving partner Lisa; his brother Jeremy Shireman; and his mother and father Randy and Marie.

Family and friends may visit and share memories from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 26th, 2020 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. We remind everyone to practice the social distancing guidelines.

Allen N. Errthum

Allen N. Errthum, 78, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at the VA Hospital in Iowa City after a courageous battle with ALS.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 26th, 2020 at the funeral home with Deacon Bill Biver officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with full military honors by the Dubuque Marine Corps League and Tri-State Vietnam Veterans. We remind you to practice the social distancing guidelines and if you are unable to attend, a live stream of the funeral service will be on the funeral home Facebook page.

Allen was born on April 4, 1942 in Holy Cross, IA son of Frances (Hefel) and Leo Errthum. He attended Holy Cross High School and was drafted into the Army in November 1963. He was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia then sent to the Carolinas where he trained with helicopters in the 5th Battalion, 11th Air Assault, 38th Artillery. He was deployed to Vietnam where he was in charge of a jeep and 2 radios in the Fire Direction Center. His battalion reached Vietnam before their supplies, so he and 5 other guys shared a jar of peanut butter and crackers. Allen was very proud of being a veteran.

He married the love of his life Carol Summer from Farley on September 28, 1968. They have one daughter, Rachel. He loved watching Rachel play sports. He and Carol followed her career all over the country. He was a proud father and loving husband.

Allen worked for John Deere for 31-1/2 years, retiring at 50. He belonged to the UAW Local 94. He was an over-the-road semi driver for many years after John Deere, and drove for a few local trucking companies out of Dubuque lastly with J & R Trucking. Carol would accompany him on some of those trips where they had many adventures and created a lifetime of memories. In his later years he helped out at Stone Cliff Winery with Nan and Bob Smith. Allen loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He was a great storyteller and always had a joke or something funny to say. His positive disposition carried on even after his diagnosis of ALS. He never stopped smiling.

He is survived by his wife Carol of over 51 years and one daughter, Rachel Errthum of Idaho Springs, CO. He is also survived by 7 siblings: Genevieve Pike Houston, TX; Mary Hayes, Glencoe, MN; Kathleen Rudebeck, Dallas, TX; Barb (John) Taylor, Holy Cross, IA; Jerome (Marlene) Errthum, Waupton, IA; Leon (Elaine) Errthum, Dubuque, IA; Ed (Deb) Errthum, Holy Cross, IA; and sister-in-law Phyllis Errthum of Holy Cross, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Errthum of Holy Cross; Nick and Carol Errthum of North Buena Vista; Donald and Carol Errthum of North Buena Vista; Ray Pike, Dick Hayes and Wayne Rudebeck.

The family would like to thank his home health Nurse and Occupational Therapist, Lynn Sutter and Cathy Schuman respectively, for their care and dedication during his battle with ALS, and the staff at the VA hospital in Iowa City for all their care and support. He will be missed by his kitty, “Peanut” that brought him so much joy.

Janet M. (Kennedy) Winter-Kenyon

Janet Mae (Kennedy) Winter-Kenyon, age 74, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 7:15 a.m., on Sunday, May 3, 2020, at home, surrounded by her loving family. To celebrate Janet’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., on Monday, June 29, 2020, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. To honor Janet’s life, funeral services will be held immediately following the visitation at 6:00 p.m., at Behr Funeral Home, with Deacon John Stierman officiating.

Janet was born on December 13, 1945, in Dubuque, daughter of Francis M. and Laverne (Jasper) Kennedy.

Janet was a lifelong resident of Dubuque and graduated from Wahlert High School, class of 1964. She married William R. Winter on September 9, 1967, in Dubuque and they were blessed with two children. Janet later married William T. Kenyon on October 2, 2017, in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2018. Janet was employed in the bindery as a collator operator at Wm. C. Brown Publishing in Dubuque for 39 years until her retirement in 2011. When she was able, she enjoyed spending time socializing with her family and friends or watching a Green Bay Packers game. Janet enjoyed spending weekends on the river with her family at their cabin in East Dubuque or working in her garden. She was a member of the Leaky Lodge at the Grand Tap. Janet was a gentle and selfless person who was always there with a kind word or a pat on the back. She was an amazing and strong mother, grandmother, wife, sister, friend and caregiver who could light up a room with her smile, a look or her witty sense of humor.

Janet’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque for all of their kindness and professional care of Janet these past weeks.

Nicholas Bartels

Nicholas Bartels (Nick), of Chicago, Illinois and formerly of Dyersville passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at his home.

Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa and Dieterle Memorial Home and Cremation Ceremonies in Montgomery, IL are assisting the family. Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2020 at Kramer Funeral Home where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Private burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Dyersville next to his parents.

Nick was born December 20, 1970, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Dale and Jean (Walsh) Bartels. After graduating from Beckman High School, he received his B.A from Briar Cliff College (University) in Sioux City, IA, followed by graduate studies at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD. After completing his studies he moved to Chicago, IL, pursuing a career in theater. He was the Technical Director for Victory Gardens Theater for many years. In 2011, he transitioned into a career as a home inspector for Home Advantage Inspections.

He married Stacey Prange in 2003, and although later divorcing, they remained very good friends. Nick loved spending time with their dog Izzy, and when not walking the dog, he enjoyed a good book or the latest British mystery on PBS. Nick loved good food, and sharing a meal with close friends was always a special occasion for him. He was a talented artist and builder and could fix almost anything. He was a loyal friend and always quick to lend a hand when someone needed help.

Survivors include his sister, Megan Bartels of Houston, TX, ex-wife Stacey Prange of SC, step-sisters: Ann Witte (Brad) Bartheld of Carmel, IN, Kate Witte of Lima, OH, and Amy Witte of Ankeny, IA, and several aunts, uncles & cousins.

Nick was preceded in death by his mother Jean in 1980, his father Dale in 2019, step-mother Helen (Lueck) Witte-Bartels in 1998, brother Mark Bartels in 1963, and sister Marie Bartels in 1966 (both in infancy).

Nick was a patient, kind and gentle soul who was deeply loved and will be missed by all of us.

Francis A. Bergfeld

Francis A. Bergfeld, 88, of Dubuque, Iowa and formerly of East Dubuque, Illinois passed away Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Stonehill Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Holy Family Church New Melleray, with Fr. Rod Allers officiating, burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 24th, 2020 at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a parish wake service will be at 4 pm.

Francis was born on June 8, 1932 the son of Albert and Anna (Freking) Bergfeld. He grew up on the family farm and later farmed on his own farm in Peosta. He also drove semi-truck for over 40 years for various trucking firms, retiring at the age of 80.

He was an avid NASCAR fan, especially of Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Tony Stewart. He enjoyed local stock car racing and specifically being part of the pit crew for Bill Beckman Racing. He took special pride in his lawn and garden and spent majority of his time outdoors. His next door buddy and helper, Dustin Shireman, worked on many tasks together. In his later years, Francis particularly enjoyed going to Dairy Queen, his favorite place to eat, where he would order chicken strips and a strawberry sundae.

He is survived by his three children Colleen (Bob) Rogers, Darrell (Veronica) Bergfeld and Connie (Michael) Heeren and their mother Phyllis Bergfeld all of Dubuque, six grandchildren Tressa Steinbach, Tiffany Block, April Bergfeld, Austin Heeren, Tanner Heeren, and Natasha Heeren, three step grandchildren Rob Rogers, Stacey Hewitt and Eric Rogers, ten great grandchildren and four step great grandchildren, and his brother Charles “Charlie” Bergfeld of Peosta.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Myrtle McAllister and a brother, William “Hoss” Bergfeld.

In lieu of flowers a Francis Bergfeld memorial fund has been established.

Margaret A. Coble

Margaret Ann Coble, 78, of Dubuque, passed away Friday, June 12, 2020, due to a tragic car accident.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2020, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd., Dubuque, and will be live-streamed on the funeral home Facebook page for those unable to attend. Rev Tom Shinkle will officiate. Interment will be at Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 26, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory. Margaret was born July 27, 1941 in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of Ralph and Edna (VanOrsdoll) Hutton. She married Walter “Dick” Coble on October 20, 1957. Margaret graduated from nursing school at NICC in Peosta. Early in her career, she was employed as a traveling nurse, and later with the Sisters of St. Francis in Dubuque, until her retirement.

Margaret enjoyed bowling, camping, and traveling. Word search puzzles and playing cards with the grandkids were favorite pastimes. She was an avid Hawkeyes fan. Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, who loved cooking for her family and spending time with family and friends. Searching for the perfect gift to give was a specialty of Margaret’s, and Christmas was her favorite holiday.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 62 years, Walter “Dick” Coble, of Dubuque; her son, Russell (Diane) Coble of Johnston, IA; her daughter, Sherri (Larry) Tscharner, of Dubuque; her grandchildren, Nicole Tscharner, of North Liberty, IA, Kara (Russell) Simon, of Dubuque and their children Madelyn and Ashton, Austin Coble of Iowa City, Chris Coble of Sioux City, and Tristan Coble of Johnston, and Jim Coble and his children Madison and Breceis “Bree”; her brother Cloyce (Linda) Hutton of Linby, IA; her in-laws, Joann (Kenneth) Davis of Bloomfield, IA, Alice Coble of Hedrick, IA, Dan (Lola) Coble, Susan (Rick) Huseman, and Sheila (Pat) Brehm, all of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Ricky Lee Coble; her parents; her parents-in-law, Walter and Ruth Coble; and her siblings-in-law Larry, Roger, and Jerry Coble.

Memorials may be made to the Margaret Coble Memorial Fund for later donation to her favorite charities.

 


 

Elizabeth M. Hesselman

Elizabeth Mary “Lizzy” Hesselman, 65, of Dubuque passed away Saturday, June 20, 2020 at home with her family by her side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at the Church of the Nativity with Fr. Andy Upah officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery. The Leonard Funeral home is in Charge of Arrangements.

Lizzy was born on January 30, 1955 in Dubuque, the daughter of Donald and Mary (Anderson) Hesselman, with Down Syndrome. She lived with her loving family her entire life and was an inspiration to all who knew her.

She is survived by her siblings Don (Gwen) Hesselman, Steve (Becky) Hesselman, Mary Gereau, Mark Hesselman, Mike (Terri) Hesselman, Tony (Jill) Hesselman, Ann (Dave Heller) Volkert, Julie (Dave) Nauman, and Jane Scarlino, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father Don in 2018 and mother Mary in 2019 along with her maternal and paternal grandparents.

 


 

Lynn L. Ball

Lynn L. Ball, 71, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque.

Lynn was born on March 16, 1949 in Postville, IA son of Marjorie (Sass) and Harold Ball. He graduated from East Dubuque High School. He was drafted into the Army in March 1969. He was stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington where he ranked up to E-5. Lynn was very proud of being a veteran.

Lynn was an over-the-road semi driver for many years, and drove for several national and local trucking companies out of Dubuque.

Lynn really enjoyed the outdoors and nature. He spent many hours sitting on his back deck enjoying the weather. He often enjoyed sharing memories of living in and around Monona, Iowa where he spent many days/weeks staying with his Grandparents (Hubert and Ruth Sass) on their farm. His favorite pastime was attending local dirt track stock car races. He took his Grandson, Adam, to so many of those races and instilled the love of racing in him.

He is survived by 5 Children: Dean (Stephanie) Bush of Dubuque; Dawn (Ken) Leppert of Dubuque; Doran (Shari) Bush of Asbury; Daryl Bush of Dubuque; Deric (Jennifer Siegert) Bush of Dubuque. Ten Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by 5 Siblings: Vicki (Tom) Houts, Shell Knob, MO; Shari (John) Arthofer, East Dubuque; Neil (Jeanne) Ball, East Dubuque; Ross Ball, East Dubuque, and Cathi (Jeff) Timmerman, Lisbon, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one Uncle, Bob.

The family would like to thank his home health Nurse Stephanie Allen for her care and dedicated friendship for the last 8 wonderful years, Hospice of Dubuque and also Ashleigh and the staff at Stonehill Care Center for all their care and support.

James T. Lewis

James T. Lewis, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on June 18, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics after his battle with MDS.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Friday, June 26th, 2020 at the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 3:00 p.m. Graveside committal service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 27th, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Bellevue, Iowa with Deacon Bill Biver officiating. Jim was born to Harold and Eileen (Pogeman) Lewis, in Bellevue, Iowa on August 23, 1949. He attended Wahlert and Senior High School and graduated from the University of Dubuque. Jim married Ruth Schwager in Bellevue, IA on May 27, 1972. He had a 43 year career at Frommelt – Rite Hite where he held several positions and met many friends.

James T. was a man of strength and integrity, quiet courage and compassion, creativity and character. He adored his wife and family, and especially loved being a grandpa. One of his favorite pastimes was exploring the scenic back roads of Iowa, using them as inspiration for his greatest passion, painting. The way he put it, “I paint because I have to.” He also shared other creative talents, including wood working, wine making, playing the bass guitar, and photography. Jim enjoyed creative writing and had a way with words. He made everyone feel welcome and loved, sharing his time, smiles and humor with all.

Jim loved his family deeply. He is survived by his wife, Ruth of 48 years, and his 2 children Abbey (Aaron) Higgins, of Dubuque and Nathan (Samantha) Lewis of Kansas City. He was a proud grandpa to Tomas and Lucy Higgins and Johanna and Rosemary Lewis. His two sisters, Dianna Lewis-Baker and Barb Pomplun will continue to keep him in their hearts. He will also be greatly missed by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Jim joined his parents; his sister, Patty Oneyear; his father and mother-in-law, Vincent and Rosemary Schwager; his brothers-in-law, Arnie Baker, Leo Oneyear, Paul and Tom Schwager; his sister-in-law Rita Krause; and his nephew, Trevor Schwager.

Jim’s journey has come to a close, but the numerous people he has influenced will continue his legacy with the long and winding road of memories we shared with him. In his words, “Now don’t just stand there, go create something.”

In lieu of flowers, a James T. Lewis memorial fund will be established.

 


 

Thomas F. Ryan

Thomas F. Ryan, 78, of Dubuque, died peacefully, Saturday, June 20, 2020, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

A Private Family Mass of Christian Burial for Tom will be Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Father Tom Heathershaw as the Celebrant and Deacon Mike Ellis as the homilist. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. The mass will be live streamed at 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 23, 2020, on Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home’s Facebook page and will also be available to view later at www.hskfhcares.com.

Tom was born May 29, 1942, the son of Earl V. and Luella Manderscheid Ryan. On November 19, 1983, he married Margaret “Peg” Merriam in Dubuque.

He graduated from Holy Rosary High School in LaMotte in 1959.

Tom worked 40 years at Interstate Power Company/Alliant Energy.  He started at the Interstate Power Company Bus System before it was given to the City of Dubuque, he then transferred to the line department where he worked many years as a lineman and customer service representative.

Tom was active in St. Donatus Catholic Church and St. Donatus Community Club and served on the church’s school board. He was secretary and served on the grounds committee of Pine Knoll Condo Association for seven years. He coached little league baseball, girls softball, and was a 4-H Leader. His favorite teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears – whether they won or lost. He loved the game of golf and walking the Florida beaches in his retirement. He taught his children the basics of how to work on cars and do almost any home improvement project.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 36 years, Margaret “Peg”; four sons, Terry (Mary) Ryan, Steve (Tami) Ryan, Stan (Tammy) Ryan, all of Dubuque, and son, Todd (Karen) Ryan of Parkersburg, IA; one daughter, Cathy (Randy) Wehling of Anamosa, IA; one stepdaughter, Lisa (Jacques) Condon of Mequon, WI; nine grandchildren, Kristi (Garret), Kelly (Jacob), Austin, Cody, Taylor (Derek), Josh, Emily, Katie (Jordan), and Mitch (Taryn), one step-granddaughter, Olivia; five great-grandchildren, Cooper, Brooks, Coy, Mia, and Miles; and one sister, Helen Curtis of Davenport, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Paul Ryan, brother-in-law, Allan Curtis, and cousin, Grace (Bob) Denlinger who helped raise Tom after his mother died at a young age.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque, Tom’s nurses and caregivers at Stonehill Care Center, and his doctors, nurses, and caregivers at MercyOne, Medical Associates and Mayo Clinic.

Sharon L. Thul

Sharon L. Thul, 80, of Dubuque, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at home, surrounded by family.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd., Dubuque. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 22, at the funeral home, and will be live-streamed on the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory Facebook page. Deacon Bill Biver will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West. Sharon was born June 15, 1940 in Dubuque, the daughter of Charles and Velma (Chambers) Smith.

She married Dale Thul on July 25, 1959 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Sharon was an avid fan of Mickey Mouse, and enjoyed watching figure skating. She dearly loved her family, and especially delighted in being a grandmother.

Sharon is survived by her beloved husband, Dale; her children, Debbie (Mike Goin) Laufenberg of St. Donatus, Danny Thul of Andrew, IA, Dennis Thul, Donnie (Staci) Thul, and Kathy (Brian) Schwager, all of Dubuque; her grandchildren, Corey (Nichole), Jason, and Kara Laufenberg, Theresa (Aaron) Ward, Megan (Tony Giorgenti) Thul, Dennis “Bud” Thul Jr., Kyle Siefker, Jake and Dylan Thul, and Cole, Adelyn, and Alyvia Schwager; nine great grandchildren; her sisters, Shirley Woock and Linda (Ronnie) Hanson; her brother in law Dean (Pat) Thul; her sister in law, Carole Thul; and many nieces and nephews.

Sharon was preceded in death by her son in law, Wayne Laufenberg; her parents; her siblings, Unice, Kathy Jo, William and Terrance Smith, and Lola Hostert; and her in laws, Dave Thul and Mildred and Melvin Thiltgen.

Sharon S. Furlong

Sharon S. (Conlan) Furlong, age 76, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 1:47 a.m., on Friday, June 19, 2020, at Stonehill Care Center.  To celebrate Sharon’s life, family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. To honor Sharon’s life, funeral services will be held immediately following the visitation at 12:00 noon, at Behr Funeral Home, with Deacon John Stierman officiating.

Sharon was born on January 30, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, daughter of Wilson and Opal (Dolan) Conlan.

Sharon graduated from Dubuque Senior High School.  Sharon was employed with Hillcrest Family Services as a receptionist, then went on to work with Dr. Anderegg until her retirement.  Sharon was united in marriage to Jon Furlong on December 14, 1991, at the Carnegie Stout Public Library.  In her free time, Sharon could be found enjoying the great outdoors with Jon at their cottage at Lake Joy for over 25 years.  She was also an avid reader who looked forward to finishing one mystery book so that she could pick up the next.  We are deeply saddened at the loss of Sharon in our daily lives, but take some comfort in knowing that she is now resting peacefully, free of the health issues she has faced so bravely these past years.
