Robin A. Stone

Robin Ann Stone, 63, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. She was born on July 12, 1956, in Washington D.C., the daughter of Paul and Dorothy (Marshall) Stone. Robin graduated in 1974 from Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Virginia, and from Frederick Community College in Frederick, Maryland, with a paralegal degree.

In 1980, Robin was united in marriage to Charles Mitchell in Frederick, Maryland. Three children were born to this union. The couple divorced in 1998.

In 2006, Robin moved to Manchester. She married Mark Luensmann in 2007 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester.

Robin worked as a service manager at Unlimited Services in Dyersville. She was active over the years with the Delaware County Democrats, most recently serving as chairperson. She enjoyed photography and genealogy.

Robin is survived by her husband, Mark Luensmann of Manchester; three children, Matthew Mitchell of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Daniel (fiancée Luba Dukina) Mitchell of Cedar Rapids; and Kathryn Mitchell of Manchester; one granddaughter on the way; and siblings, Kimberly Kincaid of McConnellsville, Ohio, and Robert Matters of Maryland.

Robin was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lee Stone.

Martha Lou Lawson

Martha Lou “Marty” Lawson, 76, of Earlville, Iowa, formerly of Manchester, died after a long illness on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, Martha spent her life loving and caring for others. Born on August 21, 1943, in Cedar Rapids, to Clifford and Agnes (Stepanek) Lawson, Martha was raised in Dundee. She graduated from Manchester High School and attended nurses training at Allan College of Nursing.

Martha began her nursing career at The University of Iowa as one of the first kidney dialysis nurses of the time. She was instrumental in the development and beginning of The Rocky Mountain Kidney Foundation of Denver, Colorado. She married Michael Blanford, and they later divorced. Martha obtained her Real Estate Agent/Broker License and provided sales and consulting services for many years in Denver, where she was also an active community member serving on numerous housing development advisory boards. In 1996, Martha returned to the Manchester area and continued her real estate business through F&G Reality in Manchester. In 2017, she moved to Nottingham Apartments in Earlville.

Martha enjoyed gathering and vacationing with family and friends, art, antiquing, cooking, fishing, playing cards, planning, dreaming, and problem solving. Martha was a lover of animals and children. She enjoyed being a member of Questers for many years. She was the first to always lend a helping hand to anyone who asked. She was a gentle soul who loved her family and many friends. It is this spirit that will live in the hearts and minds of all who knew her, and she will not be forgotten.

Martha is survived by her older brother, Clifford (Luella) Lawson of Dundee; younger brothers, Charles (Angi) Lawson of Garnavillo, David (Sandy) Lawson of Manchester, and Donald (Linda) Lawson of Delhi; and younger sister, Mary (Stan) Pfoff of Mount Vernon; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; one great-nephew, Ronald Lawson; and one great-niece, Bethany Lawson.

Clarence D. Miles

Clarence D. Miles, age 73 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on October 30, 2019 at home, surrounded by his family.  To celebrate Clarence’s life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on November 9, 2019 at Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, 1795 Jackson Street in Dubuque.

Clarence was born on April 29, 1946 in Cherokee, Iowa, a son to Floyd James and Viola Mae (Birch) Miles.  Clarence was a simple kind-hearted man who enjoyed karaoke and listening to the oldies”, especially the King, Elvis Presley, his idol.  Clarence’s favorite song was “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”.  Clarence participated in Pool Leagues at Noonan’s and Instant Replay.  His 8-Ball breaks were some of his proudest accomplishments.  Clarence took pride video taping his son, Jerry, driving the #4 MPH car.  Clarence enjoyed the simple life, drinking coffee, sitting outside, spending time with family and friends, and watching his grandchildren grow up.

Gloria Herbst

Gloria Herbst, 73, of Sherrill, passed away Friday, November 1, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, November 4, 2019, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road.

The Funeral Service for Gloria will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, November 5, 2019, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service with Rev. Dianne Grace as the officiant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Gloria was born January 14, 1946, in Dubuque, the daughter of Louis Dayton and Anna Celeste (McCarthy) Heacock. On June 20, 1964, she married Edward J. Herbst in Asbury. He died December 29, 2017.

Gloria farmed with her husband, Ed raising pigs and chickens for many years.

She was a member of the Sherrill United Methodist Church and volunteered at Camp Albrecht Acres for many years where she made lifelong friends.  She enjoyed volunteering many years at Vacation Bible School where she became known as the “cookie lady”.  She was very social and enjoyed visiting with people. She loved watching “All in the Family” and “Gunsmoke”and cherished spending time with her grandchildren.  Gloria suffered and endured great loss of her husband, son and a house fire in the last several years.  As a strong woman she persevered with the love of her family and friends.  Grandma and Holly shared a special bond, formed from much time spent together, Grandma was Holly’s “go to person”, Kyle always put a smile on Grandma’s face as he stepped up to take care of Grandma after Ed died.

Survivors include her daughter, Janet (Allan) Smith of Sherrill; three grandchildren, Holly (Alex Lyne) Smith, Kyle Smith, and Jesse Arlen; three brothers, Kenny (Helen) Heacock of Dubuque, Dean (Sally) Heacock of Durango, and Duane (Mary) Heacock of Peosta; one brother-in-law, Ronald Winter of Asbury; one sister-in-law, Nancy Clayton of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Gene Herbst in 1998, one brother, Arvel “Red” Heacock, one sister, Carol Winter, and one brother-in-law, Jim Herbst.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Hospice of Dubuque and Sherrill Fire Department.

James J. Krapfl

James J. Krapfl, 78, of Fillmore, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 1, 2019 at his home in Fillmore, Iowa.
Visitation for Jim will be held from 3 to 8 p.m., Monday, November 4, 2019 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa where a prayer service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held after 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial for Jim will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fillmore, IA with Rev. Douglas Loecke presiding. Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fillmore, IA.

He was born March 3, 1941, in Fillmore, Iowa, son of Alvin and Loraine (Klocker) Krapfl. He received his education from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Fillmore, IA. Except for a brief stint in the National Guard, he spent his entire life farming, both on his own and in a partnership with his brother Ron and his nephew, Chris. Though farming took up most of his time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, helping neighbors and watching sports on television. Though he never played, he had a passion for professional tennis and watched every tournament. He was an avid Hawkeye fan, enjoying men’s football and basketball and women’s basketball too. Jim also enjoyed experimenting with ways to grow better crops, natural and homeopathic health cures, reading and cutting out jokes from the newspaper and taping them to his kitchen wall. He also loved to collect rocks and arrowheads.

Jim was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish in Fillmore, Iowa.

He is survived by his four siblings Ed (Barb) Krapfl of Shore View, MN, Ron (Julia) Krapfl of Cascade, IA, Bob (Lee Ann) Krapfl and Jan (Tom) Anderegg both of Dubuque, IA; six nephews, James Krapfl, David Krapfl, Christopher Krapfl, Matthew Krapfl, Timothy Krapfl and Benjamin Anderegg; four nieces, Karen Gent, Jennifer Woolf, Kelly Krapfl and Abby Anderegg; and many cousins, friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one nephew, Mark Krapfl; and nephew-in-law, George Gent.

Ruth A. Frederick

Ruth A. Frederick, 92, of Dubuque, died Thursday, October 31, 2019, at her home surrounded by her family.

Visitation will be from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2019, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Ruth was born September 3, 1927, in Dubuque, the daughter of Joseph and Sophie Becker Hedrick. She worked on the family farm which is now known as John Deere. On April 2, 1949, she married Eldon Frederick at Immanuel Congregational Church in Dubuque. They had met at her favorite dance hall, Melody Mill. He passed away on September 14, 2012.

She enjoyed the outdoors, tending to her flowers and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed camping, playing cards, and when her seven kids were older, she went to work for the Dubuque Community School District.

Survivors include four daughters, Diane Miles, Sandra (Ron) Ward, Denise (Dee) Wooley, all of Dubuque, and Delorse (Doug) Vondal of Davenport; two sons, Joseph (Ann) Frederick of Durango, IA, and James (Deb) Frederick of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eileen Sheppard of Potosi, WI; one sister-in-law, Jean Frederick of Dubuque; many nieces and nephews; her Goddaughter, Lavon Klauer; and her special friends, Charlene Sindt and Ruth Hohnecker.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Juanita, and many brothers and sisters, brother-in-laws, and sister-in-laws.

Gisela Hellmer

Gisela Hellmer, 92, of Dubuque, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at her son’s home, with family at her side.

Private family services will be held. Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd., is entrusted with arrangements.

Gisela was born December 4, 1926 in Glaserhau, Slovakia, the daughter of Franz and Elizabeth (Krolas) Schwarz. In 1956, Gisella immigrated from Germany to the United States with her husband and son.

Gisela was an avid gardener, and a wonderful baker and cook. She enjoyed knitting, and loved animals. She was a devoted mother and a loving grandmother, and will be sadly missed.

Gisela is survived by her son, Werner (Michelle) Hellmer of Durango; two grandchildren, Werner K. (Lisa Marie) Hellmer of Pahrump, NV, and Jessica R. (Arthur J.) Olechowski of Durango; and two great-grandchildren, Lia and Ali Olechowski, both of Durango.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and four sisters.

James S. Ferrell

James Stuart Ferrell, 27, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at his sister’s home. He was born on June 25, 1992, in Dubuque, the son of Kelly Billmeyer and David Ferrell. James was raised by his mother and step-father, Thomas Breitbach. He attended school in Dubuque. The family later moved to Colesburg and he attended Edgewood-Colesburg High School. After his graduation, James was an assembly worker at Scale Model in Dyersville.

James enjoyed fishing, kayaking, and playing pool. He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially Blaine Moll and Travis Miller.

Survivors include his mother, Kelly (Thomas “Howie”) Breitbach of Delhi; his father, David Ferrell; his twin sister, Mariah (Jacob) Burkart of Manchester and sister, Megan (Ashton) Thommen of Delhi; two half-sisters; a cousin, Amy Kirkpatrick of Dubuque; and an uncle, Donald (Dorothy) Ferrell of Arkansas.

James was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; two brothers; one sister; and an aunt, Holly Billmeyer.

Emil M. Althoff, 93, of Earlville, Iowa, passed away Thursday, October 31, 2019.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held for Emil at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville, Iowa, with Rev. Jim Goerend presiding. Burial will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earlville, Iowa.

He was born May 4, 1926 in Petersburg, Iowa, son of Frank and Rose (Morman) Althoff. He received his education from the SS. Peter and Paul and Carol Country Schools. On May 4, 1949 he was united in marriage to Elsie M. Klechen at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sand Springs, Iowa.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Earlville, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elsie Althoff of Earlville, IA; seven children, Ken (Mary) Althoff of Strawberry Point, IA, Wayne Althoff of Dyersville, IA, Richard (Vicki) Althoff of Strawberry Point, IA, Elaine White of Dubuque, IA, Rose (Gary) Bryant of Dickyville, WI, Sandy (Arnold) Bockenstedt of Delhi, IA and Bonnie (Pat) McAllister of Dubuque, IA; 19 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; one sister, Mildred (Ben ) Zuecher of Elkader, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Kim Althoff; four brothers, Ted (Leona) Althoff, Sylester (Alice) Althoff, Ambrose Althoff and James Althoff; one sister, Verna Mae (John) Henkels.

Kelli A. Davis

Kelli A. Davis, 61, of Dubuque died Tuesday, October 29, 2019. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 pm Sunday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 pm Monday at the Church of the Nativity. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Kelli was born December 1, 1957 in Dubuque, daughter of Richard and Jayne (Conzett) Chapman. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1976.

After graduation, she worked at K-Mart until Theisen’s opened, then worked at Theisen’s for 13 years, followed by working at Crescent Electric for 15 years.

She enjoyed shopping, weekly lunches with the ladies, and Sunday night dinners with family, along with spoiling the great nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her husband Randy Davis; two children, Kylie (Justin Hoag) Davis and Andrew Davis; siblings, Dickie (Marsha) Chapman, Kris Chapman, Kim (Tom) Reittinger and Rod (Sharon) Chapman; and a sister in law, Linda Chapman, all of Dubuque.
She is also survived by brother and sister in laws, Lonny (Julie) Davis of North Liberty, Kevin (Tammy) Davis of Otter Creek, Julie (Mike) Hammer of Cedar Rapids, and Pam (John) Gregorich of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; parents in law, Cletus and Mildred Davis, a brother, Michael Chapman and a niece, Nicole Chapman.

A Kelli Davis Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank Dr. Ringgold for his knowledge and continuous care and also the nurses and staff at Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital for their care.

 


 

Susan L. Roth

Susan L. “Sue” Roth, 55, of Galena, IL passed away on October 29, 2019.

Family and friends may gather from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2019 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where services will be held at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Dennis Schmitt officiating.

Sue was born on May 22, 1964 the daughter of Wayne and Geraldine (Harry) Laufenberg Sr. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and attended NICC where she received her CNA. She worked at Sunnycrest Manor and ARC in Dubuque until becoming disabled in 2012.

On March 13, 2015 she married Mark Roth after being engaged for 20 years. Sue was the most loving and giving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She always put everyone before herself and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her dogs Lily and Jinx will miss her and will forever have her scent. Mark would like it to be known that he would not be the man he is today without Sue.

She is survived by her husband Mark; children Joe (Kristen) Laufenberg, Josh Jentz, Jesse Jentz and Laney Roth. Her grandchildren, Haley Motsch, Dillon, Madelyn, Elizabeth and Wayne, III Laufenberg. Siblings, Chris (Mary) Laufenberg and Mark Laufenberg along with many nieces and nephews.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Wayne Jr.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established.

Rev. Father Thomas F. McAndrew

Rev. Father Thomas F. McAndrew, 87, of Dubuque, died Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at the Bethany Home in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM Sunday, November 3, 2019 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road. Additional visitation hours will also be held from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, November 4, 2019 at Cathedral of St. Raphael.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Rev. McAndrew will be 11:00 AM Monday, November 4, 2019, Cathedral of St. Raphael celebrated by Archbishop Michael Jackels and priests of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West. Full military honors will be rendered by the Dubuque Honor Guard.

Father was born November 18, 1931, in Dubuque, the son of Thomas A. and Lucille Duggan McAndrew. He graduated from Loras College and took his theological training at Mount St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque.

He served in the Korean War with the U.S. Army.  After Seminary, he then was ordained on March 18, 1961 at the Cathedral of St. Raphael.  He was first assigned to All Saints in Cedar Rapids in 1961, he also served in 1963 in Charles City and Clear Lake until 1968.  Father later served as an Army chaplain from 1968-1977, retiring as a Major, serving in Vietnam from 1969-1970. In 1975, Fr. McAndrew was one of the first of the Congregation of the Mother of the Redeemer special benefactors in the United States, who helped CRM Vietnamese Priests and Brothers in many ways, especially in finding an excellent sponsor and in resettling them in Carthage, MO. Father continued a close relationship the remainder of his life, attending many of the Congregation’s events in Carthage.  After separation from the USA Chaplain’s Corp in 1975, Fr. McAndrew returned to the Archdiocese and was assigned to the Team Ministry at Mason City, 1977-1985.  During this time, he was also appointed as administrator of St. Patrick Parish, Dougherty.  In 1985, he was named as an Associate Pastor at St. Wenceslaus and St. Ludmila, both in Cedar Rapids.  He also served as a part time teacher at LaSalle High School in Cedar Rapids.  He served as pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Waterloo, 1987-1995, the last year serving also as part-time Chaplain of Covenant Medical Center.  He served as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Manly, and St. Michael Parish, Plymouth, 1995-2001.  Fr. McAndrew retired in July 2001.

Following Father’s retirement in 2001, he remained very active in his priesthood in Dubuque and the surrounding area.  He offered Masses, both weekly and as a substitute, for many years at: Church of Nativity, Power of Prayer Chapel, Alverno, Ecumenical Towers, St. Mary’s in East Dubuque, the Tridentine Latin Mass weekly at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville and, until recently, offered daily Mass for the residents of Bethany Home, where he resided.  In retirement, he was also very actively involved with Bible study and prayer groups in the area. In 2018, Father was presented with the St. George Emblem, a coveted award based on his years of service to the efforts of Catholic Scouting. He was a 4th Degree Member of Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his brother-in-law, Richard C. Burdick of Dubuque, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Herbert J. McAndrew and his wife Adeline, two sisters, Cecilia M. Vigil and her husband, Samuel, and Kathleen Burdick.

A memorial has been established for Father’s favorite charities.

Mildred W. Davis

Mildred W. Davis, 90, of Dubuque died Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at Hawkeye Care Center.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 pm Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road. Funeral service will be 1 pm Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1276 White Street, Dubuque where visitation will also be held Saturday from 12 to 12:45 pm. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, St. Donatus.

Mildred was born May 28, 1929 in St. Donatus, daughter of Herman and Alvina (Knief) Hueneke. She married Cletus Davis on July 14, 1956 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, St. Donatus. He preceded her in death on February 8, 2016.

She was a loving wife, mom and grandma, who took care of many kids in her home throughout the years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Dubuque, since 1966.

She is survived by three sons, Lonny (Julie) Davis of North Liberty, Iowa, Kevin (Tammy) Davis of Otter Creek, Iowa, and Randall (Kelli) Davis of Dubuque; two daughters, Julie (Mike) Hammer of Cedar Rapids and Pam (John) Gregorich of Dubuque; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Irma Schumacher of Ames, Iowa and a sister in law, Jean Hueneke of Bellevue.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cletus; her parents; a brother, Aaron Hueneke; a sister Marie, husband Paul Hoffman and a brother in law, George Schumacher.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1276 White Street, Dubuque.

James J. Brady

James J. “Jim” Brady, 76, of Milton, WI, formerly of Dubuque, IA and East Dubuque, IL, passed away on Saturday October 26, 2019 at home following a brief illness.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 1, 2019 at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, with Fr. Peter Snieg officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Evansville, WI. Visitation will be from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Jim was born on November 7, 1942 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Louis E. and Emily R. (Kuhl) Brady. He was a graduate of the first class from Wahlert High School in 1960.
Jim was a nursing assistant prior to his retirement. He enjoyed playing bingo, poker, going to the casino, crocheting and going out for dinner.

Surviving is his partner, Ken Rennison of Milton, WI; two daughters, Anne (Paul) Hefel of Marion, IA and Elizabeth (friend Chris Bohlen) Brady of Iowa City, IA; two grandchildren, James and Julia Hefel; his brother Bernard “Ben” (Evie) Brady of East Dubuque; eight nieces and nephews; and his brother-in-law Loras Schuster of Sycamore, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis in 1975 and Emily in 1992, and a sister Therese Schuster in 1999.

A James J. Brady memorial fund has been established.

Barbara J. (Smith) Cooper

Barbara J. (Smith) Cooper, 91, of Bellevue, formerly of South Carolina, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Mill Valley Care Center. Private family graveside services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Cemetery.

Barbara was born November 14, 1927 in New York State, the daughter of John and Anna (Barney) Smith. She served her country in the US Navy 1954-1956. She married Francis “Doc” Cooper and shared many wonderful years together before his passing in 2006. Barbara loved music and dancing, painting, and picking up sea shells when her and Francis would spend winters in Florida.

Survivors include bothers in-law, Joe (Lydia) Klein, and Dean (Tori) Klein; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; siblings, Blake, Warren, and Arlene.
