Julie A. Pickel
Julie A. Pickel, 58, of Pahrump, Nevada, formerly of Kieler, Wisconsin, died Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Wm. S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2019, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kieler with Rev. Bernard Rott, Rev. Randy Timmerman and Deacon Larry Tranel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center where the parish wake service will be at 6:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Friday at the church before the service.
Julie was born on June 25, 1960, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth J. “Kenny” and Berneice (Langmeier) Pickel.
Once she graduated high school, Julie expressed an interest in joining the U.S. Military and serving in the Army. She retired from the Army in June of 1998 after receiving full retirement benefits. During her military tenure she spent a significant amount of time in Germany where she was able to experience the chaos and excitement that came with the infamous, “Fall of the Berlin Wall”. She then returned to Madison to work at UW Hospital and Clinics as an operating room technician where she aided surgeons by giving them the necessary operating tools during procedures. In her time in Madison she always made a point to make the hour and a half drive to Kieler, Wisconsin, to visit her parents and her family. While her youngest brother was not based in the Wisconsin area, she always would contact him and his family at least once a week as well as her adopted army family. Julie’s immediate kin consisted of several pairs of dogs throughout the years, some of the most notable being Fluff and Rambo, and the current Tucker and Buddy. Besides her love for her K-9 pets, which she called “The Boys”, she had a fierce and undying love for her four nieces and two nephews. At least once a year she would gather all six of them together and host the long anticipated “Niece and Nephew Night”. “Niece and Nephew Night” entailed a wide variety of activities with all the kids and Julie together that ranged from going bowling, skating, seeing movies, and playing long hours of cards, and other party games. She hosted a very similar event with her cousins on Christmas Eve where all of them would get together and have dinner. After her time in Madison she fled the cold weather, calling herself a snowbird (one who retires away from snow), and moved to Pahrump Nevada, a place less than an hour away from Las Vegas. During retirement Julie made many friends with neighbors and engaged in activities such as water aerobics and annual card meetings. In January she sadly learned that she had pancreatic cancer. She swiftly made the journey back home to Wisconsin and began treatment. After moves from the U.S.A. to Germany and back, then from Wisconsin to Nevada, and back as well, Julie’s final move, occurred on March 16, where she entered the gates of Heaven.
Survivors include her parents, Kenny and Berneice Pickel, of Kieler; her siblings, Jim (Jane) Pickel, of Kieler, Joe (Lori) Pickel, of Arlington, Virginia, and Jenny (John) Brosius, of Kieler; her nieces and nephews, Jessica, Blake, Erica, Gabrielle, Lexi, Gage, and her one and only godson, Joey; a good friend, Alice Lubers, of Pahrump, Nevada; and her dogs, also known as the boys, Tucker and Buddy.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Maurice P. Kauffmann
Maurice P. “Hap” Kauffmann, age 86, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 6:05 a.m., on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at home with his loving family by his side. To honor Hap’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue, with Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman officiating. To celebrate Hap’s life, family and friends may visit from 2:30 p.m., until 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture service held at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Hap was born on August 2, 1932, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Charles and Clara (Kutsch) Kauffmann.
Hap proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Alaska. He was never one to brag about his service, but did enjoy telling stories about his experiences driving the Generals around base in the jeep. Hap was born and raised in Dubuque and worked on the farm for his whole life, until his well deserved “retirement” in 1994. Hap was united in marriage to the love of his life, Bernette Knabel, on June 21, 1960, at Sacred Heart Church, and the two have been blessed with 58 years and 5 children together. When Bernette began to have some health issues, Hap stepped right in and took over all of the cooking, cleaning and laundry, as well as taking wonderful care of Bernette, making sure she always had whatever she needed. Hap’s faith was also an important aspect of his life, leading to his long time membership with Holy Ghost Church. Farming, however, was truly his passion in life, he continued helping long after his son had taken over the day to day operations. As any good farmer knows, the ability to fix things is absolutely necessary, and Hap loved to put his knowledge to good use tinkering with things out in the garage on a regular basis. Hap also had a bit of a competitive side, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends playing cards. We are truly grateful for the 86 years we have been blessed to have Hap here with us, caring for us and teaching us countless life lessons and skills. The kids always loved to tease that there were 3 ways to do things, “the right way”, “the wrong way”, and “Dad’s way”. Hap truly represented the generation of men that defined hard work and love of family, and we will miss him more than words can say.
Those left to cherish Hap’s memory include

Bernette Kauffmann, Dubuque, IA;
his children,

his 14 grandchildren;
his 4 great-grandchildren;

After graduation, Rita traveled to California, where she would meet her future husband at a dance at Coconut Grove. She was united in marriage to Mastan Singh, on October 10, 1959, in Watsonville, California, and they were blessed with 38 wonderful years, and 3 adored daughters together, before he was called home ahead of her on August 3, 1998. Luckily, Rita would once again find love with Keith L. Roth, and they would marry on September 3, 2005, at the Church of the Resurrection. Rita and Keith would seamlessly blend their families together, and go on to be blessed with 14 lovely years together. Rita was always a dedicated worker, and was employed with Mastercraft for several years, then began driving bus for the Dubuque Community Schools, she worked for Haun’s Butcher Shop and lastly was a security guard at the Greyhound Park kennels and later at the casino. In her free time, Rita enjoyed entertaining family and friends, getting everyone together and making traditional meals for them to share was one of her favorite activities. Rita was also known to spend an afternoon engaging in a little retail therapy, always on the look out for a great buy. She was a creative woman, who took joy in sitting quietly working on her next beautiful crochet project, always happy to share her creations with family. Rita and Keith also liked to spend a night out on the town, heading out to dinner and a movie, or catching a concert, attending 16-17 concerts over the past few years. Keith spoiled Rita over their entire 14 years relationship, and she loved every minute of it. We are deeply saddened at losing our dear, sweet Rita, and will miss her more than words can convey, but take comfort in the fact that we will all be reunited one day for Eternity.
