Andrea J. Shireman

Andrea J. Shireman, age 74, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 3:26 p.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Andrea’s life, funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Dan Shireman officiating. To celebrate Andrea’s life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m., until the time of services at 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery.
Andrea was born on July 2, 1944, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Andrew John and Naomi (Hoag) Psaros.
Andrea proudly graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, and went on to work with the A.M.A. in Chicago for 12 years before eagerly returning to Dubuque to follow her deepest passion of helping those who were less fortunate than herself. Andrea was an unrelenting advocate for those in need within her community and faithfully ran the Washington Neighborhood Center & Homeless Shelter for over 12 years, with her husband, Dan, while also being very involved with the Crossover Foundation. It was through her involvement in those organizations that she would meet and eventually marry the love of her life, Dan Shireman. The two were united in marriage on August 8, 1997, in Dubuque, and were truly blessed and thankful to have just celebrated their 21st anniversary earlier this month. Andrea and Dan continued to work with the homeless in Dubuque and were always honored to be able to participate in the Christmas Dinner’s at Loras College, and with the End of Summer B.A.S.H. (Become Active, Stop Homelessness). She had a larger than life personality perfectly packed into her small 4’10” frame; but when combined with her boundless energy and unceasing spirit of love, Andrea would easily tower over anyone who stood in her way. Andrea was non-judgemental at her core and thrived on living life to its fullest; always quick with a story, or a joke, to unite the room around her. Our world, and surely our community are going to be missing the undeniably generous mind, body and soul of Andrea moving forward. Her positive impact has been both invisible, and yet tangible in countless lives over the years. We know Andrea accepted Yeshua into her heart, and through her faith and actions while she resided here on earth, He has surely accepted her today. We hope she is wandering peacefully along the heavenly beaches with her metal detector firmly in hand, and thankfully we know that her eternal family who has been awaiting her arrival is currently catching her up on the good news that in her new world everything is perfect everyday and nobody will ever need another advocate working diligently in the name of love. Time to rest Andrea and job well done Thy good and faithful servant!

James E. “Jim” “Jimmy” Hoerner, 80, of Key West, Iowa passed away on August 26, 2018 at home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 30th, 2018 at St. Joseph Church, Key West with Rev. Rodney Allers officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 29th, 2018 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 3:00 p.m.
James “Jimmy” Hoerner was born in Dubuque, IA on November 15, 1937 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Walter and Gladys (Woodrich) Hoerner. In his younger years he grew-up on his family farm located off Military Road. He attended a one room school house until 8th grade where he completed his education at Dubuque Senior High School.
He grew up with a love of playing, watching and coaching baseball. In 1954 he and his brother Joe had the honor of playing on the only state championship baseball team Dubuque Senior High School has ever won. One of his fondest memories was playing in tournaments catching for his brother Joe while his brother Bob played centerfield. Jim ‘Star’ Hoerner was known as a fierce competitor and in 1959 he was awarded the MVP of the Worthington Baseball tournament and in 1992 was humbled to be inducted into the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame.
In 1955 he met the love of his life, Sally Decker, at a euchre tournament at the 12 Mile House. They dated and in 1958 they married. Throughout the early years of marriage, Jimmy continued his love for baseball playing semi-pro. He was invited to catch at the White Sox training camp in Florida. Upon being injured, he returned home to be with Sally, raise his children and in 1964 moved to Key West, Iowa which became the family home.
Jim worked Dubuque Packing Company in Dubuque, for 43 years, 12 years with the City of Dubuque & Moracco Supper Club. He was a member of the Elk’s Lodge, Holy Name Society, and Baseball Hall of Fame.
Friends and family were extremely important to Jim. Jimmy and Sally created a welcoming environment for all to gather around their kitchen table for endless conversation. For many years they enjoyed going on trips with friends from Happy’s Place and for 50 years played in a couple’s card club. Jim took great pleasure supporting his children and grandchildren in their numerous activities throughout life. To some, Jimmy appeared rough around the edges, but beneath that exterior he had a heart of gold. He was kind father, loyal friend and incredibly hard working. Doing for others brought him genuine happiness. If you asked for his opinion, he would give it to you honestly and unfiltered. He enjoyed talking about politics and economics. He loved to keep himself busy and developed a pleasure in grass cutting, card playing and planning projects big and small.
Jimmy enjoyed simple things in life like traditional food, eating ice cream, wearing a ball cap and blue shirts. As time went on he found satisfaction staying closer to home, celebrating holidays with his family and going out to dinner with his love Sally. His was a straightforward and easy man who was incredibly proud of all of his children and grandchildren. His face would truly light up upon seeing his great-grandchildren. More than any family member or friend, his love and devotion for his wife Sally was never ending and truly unconditional. ‘Jim – n – Sal’ were inseparable. Jimmy will be deeply missed by all he has touched but no one greater than his love for 59 years, Sally.
He is survived by his wife, Sally Hoerner; Children; Mark (Rose), Rick (Sandy), Jayne (J.R.) Disponette of Lexington, KY, Mike of Solon, Ia. Grandchildren; Jake (Andrea), Jeff (Robin), Seth (Beth), Michael, Streat, Samantha, Hannah, Sterling & Storm and 7 great-grandchildren. Sister Ann (Bob) Lambe of Zwingle, IA. Blanche L. Moyle, age 87, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 5:53 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2018, at home, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Blanche’s life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, August 27, 2018, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue, with Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman officiating. To celebrate Blanche’s life, family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m., until the time of services at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, August 27, 2018, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is in charge of arrangements.
Blanche was born on June 23, 1931, in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Check) Ceplecha.
Blanche was born and raised in the beautiful rolling hills of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. She laid eyes on Elwin and knew he was the one. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Elwin Moyle, on June 28, 1950, in Prairie du Chien and they were gratefully blessed with 2 loving children, Laurie and Tim. Blanche was a devoted full-time wife, mother and homemaker, who took great pride in not only caring for her home, but mostly in loving and nurturing her family along the way. In their younger years, they enjoyed traveling in their camper with their children and eventually the grandchildren. Blanche was an avid fisher, she liked to outfish Elwin when it came to trout fishing and they both put in hundreds of miles over the years foraging for mushrooms, nuts and berries all over eastern Iowa for fun up until her last few months on earth. When a little downtime would periodically find its way into Blanche’s day, you could easily find her relaxing quietly while working on her latest beautiful quilt, dipping a paint brush on her pallet while creating her next masterpiece on the canvas before her or cultivating her garden from seed which she was so proud of. She loved her polka music on Wednesday and computer games to “keep her mind sharp.” Blanche was an avid, talented cook, Elwin can be quoted as saying “why go out to eat when I got the best cook at home!” Blanche was a humble and devoted woman who continually put others before herself and always lived her faith through her actions. She was a longtime member of Holy Ghost Church and to know that her last family gathering would be held in her church brought Blanche true peace of mind. We will miss our dearly sweet and loveable Blanche with all of our being, but we are beyond grateful for the 87 years the Lord was generous enough to share her with us and we know that she is surely enjoying a new and eternal family reunion of her very own loved ones, especially her son, Tim, who were called home ahead of her. Thank you for all of the memories you’ve left behind to help mend our broken hearts Blanche, and may the Lord keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again!
