UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital Enhances Surgical Care with da Vinci Xi Surgical System and Addition of Two General Surgeons
UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital is advancing access to minimally invasive surgical care with the acquisition of a da Vinci Xi Surgical System, while also welcoming two new general surgeons, Kevin Dou, MD, and Chris Healey, MD, to its medical staff.
The da Vinci Xi replaces Finley Hospital’s existing robotic surgical system and offers enhanced technology designed to support a wide range of minimally invasive procedures.
“The addition of the da Vinci Xi system reflects our commitment to providing exceptional patient care and supporting our surgical teams,” said Jennifer Havens, President, UnityPoint Health – Dubuque. “Combined with the recruitment of Dr. Dou and Dr. Healey, we are continuing to expand access to high-quality, advanced surgical services for the communities we serve.”
The da Vinci surgical system allows surgeons to operate through tiny openings, often about the size of a dime. Using hand and foot controls at a specialized surgeon console, surgeons direct robotic instruments that translate their natural hand movements into highly precise motions inside the body. A small 3D-HD camera provides a detailed view of the surgical field, enabling surgeons to perform intricate procedures with greater precision.
Robotic-assisted surgery can be used for a variety of procedures, including many general surgery operations. Benefits may include smaller incisions, reduced pain, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to daily activities, depending on the patient and procedure.
The addition of general surgeons Kevin Dou, MD, and Chris Healey, MD to the Finley Hospital team strengthens UnityPoint Health – Dubuque’s ability to provide coordinated surgical care close to home.
Drs. Dou and Healey will practice at UnityPoint Clinic General Surgery – Dubuque, opening Nov. 2 inside Delhi Medical Center, 1500 Delhi St., Suite 4110. Procedures will be performed at Finley Hospital.
Together, the surgeons provide a broad range of general surgery services, including hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, colon surgery, breast surgery, lymph node biopsy, skin lesion and tumor removal, hemorrhoid surgery, treatment of anal fissures and simple fistulas, mediport placement and additional general surgery procedures. Their expertise includes minimally invasive surgical techniques and access to robotic-assisted surgery at Finley Hospital.
Originally from Dubuque, Dr. Healey returns to the community where he grew up after practicing with UnityPoint Clinic in Waterloo. A graduate of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, he completed his general surgery residency at UnityPoint Health – Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Dr. Healey is committed to providing individualized care and helping patients understand their treatment options so they can make informed decisions about their health.
Dr. Dou also earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Henry Ford Health Jackson in Michigan. His clinical interests align closely with the comprehensive surgical services offered through the new practice, and he is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care for individuals and families throughout the region.
The addition of UnityPoint Clinic General Surgery – Dubuque expands access to timely surgical care while supporting coordination across the continuum of care, from initial consultation through surgery and follow-up care.
“Recruiting talented surgeons and providing them with leading-edge technology go hand in hand,” Havens said. “Dr. Dou and Dr. Healey bring valuable expertise to our team, and together with the da Vinci Xi system, they will help us continue delivering exceptional surgical care for our patients.”
The new robotic platform and expanded surgical team reinforce Finley Hospital’s commitment to delivering exceptional patient-centered care while ensuring residents throughout the region have access to advanced treatment options close to home.
