VNA Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program Receives Gold Award for Excellence from Iowa HHS
The UnityPoint Health – Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) has received the USDA WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence Gold Award from the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), recognizing the VNA’s exceptional commitment to supporting breastfeeding families through its WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program.
The award recognizes WIC agencies that demonstrate excellence in providing breastfeeding education, encouragement and support to WIC participants.
The VNA’s Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program was recognized for its compassion, consistency and ongoing commitment to helping WIC families navigate their breastfeeding journeys. Former WIC participants who have breastfed their own children are trained to provide encouragement, education and support to current WIC participants who choose to participate in the program.
“Our peer counselors understand firsthand that breastfeeding can be both rewarding and challenging,” said Theresa Eberhardt, WIC’s Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator. “They’ve been through many of the same questions, struggles and uncertainties, so they can meet moms where they are, listen without judgment and offer encouragement from a place of personal experience. That connection is what makes this program so special.”
Breastfeeding peer counselors provide support throughout a mother’s breastfeeding journey, helping participants navigate common challenges, build confidence and connect with additional resources when needed. Because peer counselors have experienced breastfeeding themselves, they can offer a relatable source of encouragement alongside the support provided by WIC and healthcare professionals.
The program reflects the VNA’s broader commitment to supporting families in the community and helping mothers feel informed, supported and confident in their choices.
“We’re incredibly proud of the dedication our peer counselors bring to this program,” Eberhardt said. “They’re not just providing information – they’re building relationships and reminding moms that they don’t have to navigate this journey alone.”
