Brett D. Harrelson, 27, of Dubuque, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 5, 2018.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, December 10, 2018 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd. Rev. Dianne Grace will officiate. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Brett was born February 11, 1991 in Dubuque, the son of Jeff and Nancy (Rieder) Harrelson. He graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School with the class of 2009. Brett married his high school sweetheart, Penny Berning, on September 16, 2016.

Brett was an accomplished musician, whose specialty was the trumpet, and he also enjoyed playing the guitar. He loved to ski and snowboard. Brett had an outgoing personality, and he could converse on any subject with anyone. He was a fun loving and compassionate person. Brett was a supportive husband and a great father to his daughter Layla.

Brett will be deeply missed by his wife, Penny Harrelson; his daughter, Layla Harrelson; his parents, Jeff and Nancy Harrelson; his brother, Michael (Shannon) Harrelson; his parents-in-law, Ellen and John Berning; his godson, Caleb and many nieces and nephews; his aunt Lori Boughton; his uncle Jerry (Debbie) Harrelson; many Berning brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; as well as the entire large extended Berning family.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Valerie Harrelson; his grandparents, Roy “Sonny” and Betty Rieder and John and Bernadine Harrelson; and his nephew, Brody Harrelson.
