The Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge invite young nature explorers and their families to a Bio Blitz! Come discover the amazing plants, animals, insects, birds and more on the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.

When? August 29, 2026, from 9am – noon

Where? Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center: 7071 Riverview Rd., Thomson, IL 61285

Designed especially for children ages 6-12 and their families, this hands-on event transforms participants into explorers for the day. Working together, families will work with naturalists and volunteers to search for and identify living species while exploring the outdoors. Every observation will help us understand the local biodiversity! No experience required – just curiosity and a sense of adventure! Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor exploration, including closed toe shoes.

This is a free event and there’s no need to pack a picnic – lunch is included!
