Carol J. O’Neill

Carol J. O’Neill, 83, of Asbury passed away on May 28, 2024, with her loving family by her side.

A visitation will be held Friday, June 7th, from 2 – 5 p.m. at Leonard Funeral home followed by a short service with Rev. Dianne Grace officiating.  Burial will take place in Asbury Cemetery at a later date.

Carol was born in Monroe Wisconsin, daughter of Frederick (Fritz) and Mildred Wyssbrod.  She married her high school sweetheart, John (Jack) O’Neill in 1959 and they recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary!  She was very proud of their four children, who all cherished her fierce determination and competitive spirit.  Once her children were raised, Carol spent 12 years working for the City of Asbury as Deputy City Clerk until her retirement in 1999.

In Carol’s spare time she enjoyed tending her vegetable and rose gardens, canning, golfing, playing cards, and travel with her husband, friends, and family. Her children will always cherish the memories made with their parents on a family trip in Ireland last summer.  Carol was a competitive golfer, participating in women’s leagues at Bunker Hill and The Meadows.  She won 9 hole Champion awards multiple times and achieved Hole In One three times!  Following retirement, Carol and Jack spent winters in Florida where they continued to golf, play cards, and socialize with a large group of friends.

She is survived by her husband, Jack, children, Sheri (Joseph) Koos of East Dubuque, John (Susan) O’Neill of Epworth, Chris (Mark) Ruden of Dubuque, Kelly (Chuck) Perrin of Ames. Her legacy continues through her ten grandchildren, Nikolas, Brandon (Natalie), and Shaun O’Neill, Brian, Mitch, and Ali Ruden, Jensyn, Ashtyn, and Owen Perrin, Nicholas Koos and 3 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister Shirley Everson and brother Frederick Wyssbrod.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a step-grandson Christopher Koos.

Carol’s life story is a legacy of love and selflessness.  Her unwavering love for Jack and her family provide a foundation to keep us rooted in togetherness and growing family memories to cherish always.
