Clarence Winter

Clarence (C. H.) Winter, 89, of Galena, IL, formerly of Guilford Township, IL, passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Madison, WI.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2018 at Holy Trinity Church in Scales Mound, with Fr. David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home in Scales Mound, and from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. on Monday at the church.

Clarence was born on July 14, 1929 in Guilford Township of Jo Daviess County, the youngest child of Wilmer and Minnie (Wolford) Winter. He was united in marriage to Rita R. Pogeman on June 9, 1949 at Holy Trinity Church.

Clarence formerly farmed and was a driver for Flynn Ready Mix for many years, until his retirement. He also was an associate for many years at the Nash, Steinke, Kitchen and Miller Funeral Homes.

He enjoyed sports, traveling, socializing and playing cards. Clarence was a life time member of St. Michael’s Church, where he served as usher, a member of Galena Knights of Columbus Council # 696, Msgr. C. F. Conley Assembly 4thDegree, Galena Elks Lodge # 882 and the Galena Eagles Club. Although he never served, Clarence had a great love and respect for the military.

Surviving is his wife, Rita; four daughters, Rosemary (Ron) Hendrickson and Beverly Feldermann both of Galena, Patti (John) Clark of Mequon, WI. and Joan (friend Patrick Garrity) Duran of Kansas City, MO. a son, Donnie (Deb) Winter of Scales Mound; 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Brown of Apple River, and Mona Bodell of Hazel Green, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilmer and Minnie; his siblings, Michael, Fred and Carl Winter, Helen Bell, Violet Hesselbacher, Virginia Berlage, Clara Westphal and Sarah Werner, and a son-in-law, Gary Feldermann.

Rita and family extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Matt Gullone, nurses and staff at Midwest Medical Center, Galena, U.W. Hospital and Clincis, Madison and to our caregivers, Bill and Jackie Houy for the wonderful care given to our husband and father.

In lieu of flowers a Clarence Winter memorial fund has been established.
