Cletus E. Maiers

Cletus “Clete” E. Maiers, 84, passed away August 25, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, after a stroke. Friends may greet the family from 2 PM to 7 PM on Friday, August 31, and from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM Saturday, September 1, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 1, at the Church of the Resurrection. Rev. Andrew Upah will officiate. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Clete was born October 15, 1933, in Holy Cross, the son of Gilbert and Henrietta (Lake) Maiers. He married Shirley McPoland-Anstoetter on July 22, 1977, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, in Dubuque.
Clete worked on the John Deere assembly line for over 30 years, retiring in 1992, after which he worked for several years as a delivery driver for Value Independent Parts and Hy-Vee. He was a longtime member of St. Anthony’s and the Church of the Resurrection Parishes, a Fourth Degree with the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Asbury Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Moose Club and the Holy Cross Catholic Order of Foresters.
Clete enjoyed wintering in Texas, golfing, playing cards, cheering on the Cubs, Bears and Hawkeyes, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Shirley, Clete is survived by four children, Brian (Nancy) Anstoetter of West Des Moines, and their children: Ben, Joe and Jack; Brenda (Mark) Ehlers of Dubuque, and their children: Matt (fiancé Brianna Kramer), Connor and Katie; Brad (Laura) Anstoetter of Walker, and their children: Andrew and Jack; and Eric (Kristy) Maiers of Elmhurst, Illinois, and their children: Norah and Sadie. He is also survived by brother Eddie (the late Laura) Maiers; sister Eileen (the late Jerry) Kluesner; brother Al (Patricia) Maiers; sister-in-law Norma (the late Wilmer) Maiers; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law on the McPoland and Anstoetter sides of the family.
Clete was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law Frank and Bernadette McPoland; brother Leon (Harriet) Maiers; brother Wilmer “Wimp” Maiers; sister-in-law Laura Maiers; brother-in-law Jerry Kluesner; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law on the McPoland and Anstoetter sides of the family.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Dubuque.
