Dale L. Hovey

Dale L. Hovey, 98, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, April 12, 2025, at home.

Dale Leroy Hovey was born on November 17, 1926 at Crabtown in Jackson County, Iowa, to Clifford Charles and Velma Wylia (Taylor) Hovey.  He attended grade school at Cedar Grove and various Jackson County country schools.  He was a graduate of Maquoketa High School.  He married Velma Catherine Weis on June 7, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa.  Two children were born from this union, David and Debra.

Dale had first worked for Green Bay Lumber Company in Maquoketa.  He then drove his own truck delivering fuel for Reichling Bros. Oil Company in Maquoketa.  Lastly, he managed the Wastewater Treatment Plant for the City of Maquoketa for over ten years.

Dale was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, and the Joinerville Boat Club.  He enjoyed reading, camping, boating, mushrooming, garage sales, antiquing, and fixing bicycles.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Velma Hovey of Maquoketa, IA; children, David (Kris) Hovey of Maquoketa, IA, and Debra Hovey-Theisen of Kansas City, MO; 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles Hovey, and granddaughter-in-law, Terri Hovey.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, April 21, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at the Hickory Grove Cemetery, rural Emeline, Iowa.
