Dan was born on June 20, 1948, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Charles J. Rooney, Sr. and Margaret (Murray) Rooney. He attended Dubuque Senior High School and was a Master Craftsman and Carpenter. He was united in marriage to Clara Myers on July 16, 1966, in Dubuque. He worked at Rockford Memorial Hospital, was a property manager and carpenter for apartment complexes and rental homes and was a handyman for hire for countless projects over the years.

Dan was almost never seen without a cup of coffee in hand and was an encyclopedia of odd and interesting facts that he loved to share. He took great pride in helping both of his adult kids complete home and yard projects, and would turn up at any given time with a new sink, tiles, tools, building equipment, or trees for their homes. Dan was truly a World Class handyman and craftsman and could fix or make anything from specialty cabinets to ornate doorways to birdhouses. He passed many a morning at the donut shop and never met a stranger. When someone he knew had a need, Dan would turn up immediately to help. He was proud of being a devout Catholic and even attended Latin Mass frequently to honor tradition. He was charitable, supporting local people and businesses whenever possible, as well as other charitable organizations he found suitable.

Dan is survived by his son Shawn (Michelle) Rooney, grandchildren Caleb (Ashley) Shearrow, Tyler Shearrow, Blake Ashford, Brock Ashford, Jack Rooney, and Colin Rooney, siblings Mike (Tansy) Rooney, Terrance (Alice) Rooney, Donna (Greg) Kuhle, Colleen (Jerry) Dotterweich, Sharon (Gary Tappendorf) Goldman, Paul (Mary Jo) Rooney, Thomas Rooney, and Margaret (Tim) Sullivan, and his ex-wife Clara (Myers) Rooney.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Renee Ashford, brother Charles “Chuck” Rooney, and sisters Mary Breitbach and Patricia Klossner.

The family would like to thank Dan’s sister, Sharon Goldman, for her tireless and constant care and attention to Dan’s every need, often at a moment’s notice. Thanks to his sister, Margie Sullivan, for the regular visits, outings, and more. We’re grateful. Thanks to all of his siblings for their continual cycle of visits, shopping trips, days out, and checking in. We had peace of mind even at a distance because we knew he was in good hands. Dan always expressed excitement at seeing each of you and knew you cared for him well.
