David Lee Kern, age 71, formerly of Galena, died unexpectedly on Feb. 22, 2024.

Born in Dubuque, Iowa to Beverly (Vincent) and Delbert Kern on April 4, 1952, David grew up in Galena and was a 1970 graduate of GHS.

David is survived by his wife of 30 years, Robin (nee Allen), his stepsons Sean Backs (Alexis) and Brian Backs (Jill) and two beloved grandsons, Calvin and Wesley Backs. He is also survived by his parents Beverly and Delbert, his siblings; Paul (Susan), Joel, Lisa Kern Hall (Dan Hall), Sara Kern, Martha Kern, and Rachel Kern Glanville (Kris). In addition, David had five nephews (Chris, Matthew, Will, Andrew and Sam) and four nieces (Aimee, Brittany, Alison, and Mavyn) and several great nieces and nephews.

David loved life to the fullest and any acquaintance quickly became a friend. He managed a liquor store for many years and enjoyed exploring and sharing new wines, beers, and whiskies. He was passionate about golf and played several times a week with close friends and neighbors. During the winter, he and Robin lived in Edinburg, TX; in the summer they lived in Grayslake, IL. David loved to travel and visited Austria, the Czech Republic, Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Ireland, and Mexico. He had been to every state in the mainland US. He was curious about everything and frequented museums and art galleries. David enjoyed telling jokes and making people happy. He had a wonderful life and was happy right up to the very end.

There will be a Celebration of Life in Galena this summer, date to be determined.
