Donald D. Dugan, age 88, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 5:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Don’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at St. Anthony’s Church, 1880 Saint Ambrose Street, with Rev. Steven J. Rosonke officiating. To celebrate Don’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, where full military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Dubuque Post #6.

Don was born on November 5, 1929, in Charles City, Iowa, son of Elton and Eva (Pierson) Dugan.

Don was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and went on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Don was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marjorie Gibbons, on December 15, 1950, in San Francisco, California, and they would be blessed with 67 wonderful years together, and 5 adored children. Don was raised with a strong work ethic, and would put his talents to good use with the John Deere Dubuque Works for many years until his well earned retirement had finally arrived in 1984. Don was very active within the community and was also a longtime member of the Elk’s Club, and a faithful member of his beloved St. Anthony’s Church. His commitment to his country was undeniable and Don regularly put his patriotism on display with the American Legion Dubuque Post #6 as a loyal member of the funeral detail who played taps for countless military funerals in the Dubuque community, as well as at many special events honoring veterans around the Tri-State area. Don also enjoyed playing trumpet with several bands in the area, including the Ruth Feyen Trio, starring Ruth Feyen and Ducky Gordon, as well as The Upper Mainstreet Jazz Band. In his free time, Don not only enjoyed working on a little family genealogy research, but he was also quite an avid history buff who absolutely reveled in gathering any new information which would take his imagination back in time. We are deeply saddened at the loss of our dear husband, dad and grandpa, but thankfully find some comfort in knowing that he is now free from the health issues which have plagued him these past few months. We look forward to being reunited with Don once again in time, but until then we will remain grateful for the memories he leaves behind, and also for the legacy of honor he role modeled so effortlessly throughout his 88 year journey among us.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Doyle; and a grandson, Matthew Doyle.
