Elizabeth Mary (Scherrer) Flavin, 78, formerly of Dubuque, IA, passed away at Charter House – Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, surrounded by family and friends.

A funeral mass will be held Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 10:30am at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Dubuque.  A private burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery following the mass.

Elizabeth (Liz) was born December 31, 1944, in Dubuque to Russell A. and Helen M. Scherrer.  Liz was a proud 1963 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School.  Following jobs with both John Deere and A.Y. McDonald, Liz became active in Republican politics and was elected to the Dubuque School Board.  In 1976, Liz moved to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and pursued a career in residential and commercial property management. She continued in this field throughout her life, even after a move to the East Coast to live near her sister in McLean, VA.

Later in life, Liz moved to Rochester, MN, to seek care at the Mayo Clinic.  Never shy, Liz made many friends during her Rochester years, and continued playing bridge, dining out, keeping up on politics and serving on several resident committees at Charter House.

A special note of thanks to her friend, Almina Suljević, whose friendship, care and companionship meant the world.  The family also wishes to extend its gratitude to the nursing staff at Charter House in the Assisted Living Center, Short Term Rehabilitation Center and the Mayo Hospice staff.

Liz was predeceased by her sister, Anne Darr.  She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Flavin Smith, son-in-law Dan Smith of McLean, VA, granddaughter, Madeline Smith of New York, NY, and brother-in-law, Kurt Darr.

Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Crematory is in care of the arrangements.
